°•°•°•☆FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW WHAT IT IS: A nebula is a giant cloud of dust and gas in space. Some nebulae come from gas and dust ejected by the explosion of a dying star, such as a supernova. Other nebulae are regions where new stars begin to form☆°•°°•

NASA's Frank Rubio Shatters Space Record Aboard ISS
Tumblr media
  Record-Breaking Earth-to-Space Call
In a historic Earth-to-Space call scheduled for 12:05 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, September 13, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy will engage in a conversation with agency astronaut Frank Rubio. The discussion centers around Rubio's remarkable mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), marking a new record in American spaceflight history.
Tune In to Witness History
The call, providing a glimpse into life aboard the ISS and the incredible achievements of American astronauts, will be broadcast live on NASA TV, the NASA App, and the agency’s official website. Interested viewers can watch this groundbreaking conversation online at https://www.nasa.gov/live.
Rubio's Record-Setting Journey
Frank Rubio, currently on a year-long mission aboard the orbiting laboratory, has officially surpassed NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei’s previous U.S. record of 355 days in space for the longest single spaceflight by an American. When Rubio returns to Earth later this month, he will have spent an astonishing 371 days in space. To explore more NASA station astronaut records, refer to the agency's official website.
Pioneering Continuous Space Living
For over 22 years, astronauts have continuously inhabited and operated on the space station, conducting critical experiments, advancing scientific knowledge, and honing skills essential for deep space exploration. Now, let's focus on Frank Rubio, a member of NASA's 2017 Astronaut Candidate Class, who began his mission in September 2022 and will conclude it in September 2023, achieving the longest single-duration spaceflight for a U.S. astronaut.
A Diverse Background in Service
Frank Rubio, a native of Florida, brings a diverse background to this historic mission. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1998 and earned a Doctorate of Medicine from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in 2010. Before attending medical school, Rubio served as a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter pilot, accumulating more than 1,100 flight hours, including over 600 hours in combat and imminent danger zones during deployments to Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Dr. Rubio is a board-certified family physician and flight surgeon. At the time of his selection as an astronaut, he was serving in the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Carson, CO. This remarkable Earth-to-Space call marks another milestone in the history of space exploration, as NASA's astronauts continue to push the boundaries of human endurance and knowledge beyond the confines of our planet.   Sources: THX News & NASA. In June of 1982, the agency announced that the shuttle would retrieve, repair and deploy the crippled Solar Maximum Mission (“Solar Max”) in early 1984. But before the MMU could be committed to the repair, a thorough test of its performance in orbit was required and this was the task of McCandless—the MMU’s “project pilot”—and fellow astronaut Bob Stewart on STS-41B. The pair jokingly dubbed each other “Buck” and “Flash” during their time in space. Physically, the MMU measured about four feet (1.2 meters) high, 2.7 feet (81 cm) wide and 2.2 feet (66 cm) deep. According to astronaut Joe Allen, it resembled “some kind of overstuffed rocket-chair.”

Meeting Mae Jemison
If you could meet a historical figure, who would it be and why? I would love to meet Mae Jemison. Mae Carol Jemison (born October 17, 1956) is an American engineer, physician, and former NASAastronaut. She became the first African-American woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992. – Wikipedia This would be a dream come true.…

Congratulations to NASA Astronaut Candidate Christina Birch
“I want to be an astronaut!” is a response you’ll often hear from children when they are asked what they aspire to be when they grow up; however, it never becomes reality for most. Yet that dream lives on for BikeFlights Brand Ambassador Christina Birch, who was recently selected by NASA to join the 2021 Astronaut Candidate Class.

In a televised broadcast on Monday, December 6, the cycling world watched in awe as one of their own was announced by NASA as a candidate to their astronaut class. Christina is one of 10 people who were selected from among nearly 12,000 applicants, and she will report to training in January 2022. In total, Christina and her new classmates will go through approximately two years of training, after which they could launch into space to live and work aboard the International Space Station.
“The opportunity to be a NASA Astronaut Candidate is the perfect blend of all my interests and passions: pushing the limit of what the human body and mind can do, what technology enables us to do, mixing science and engineering and hands-on training in a team environment,” Birch told BikeFlights. “It mimics a lot of the challenges that I loved about cycling high performance but now gives me an opportunity to serve for the betterment of all humankind. I can’t wait to join my classmates in January to start training!”
We couldn’t be more excited and proud for Christina to have this opportunity. And while her new team may not be wearing lycra or debating the optimal gear choice for their bike, rest assured that aerodynamics and teamwork will remain staples of Christina’s pursuit to be the best she can be.
