We’ve all seen Casino and Goodfellas, we all know that Joe Pesci is one of the greatest actors of all time… but do you know the real story behind the 2 most famous mobsters he’s portrayed? In casino he played “Nicky Santoro” who was really based on Chicago/Las Vegas mobster Tony Spilotro, nicknamed "Tony the Ant", was an American mobster for the Chicago Outfit in Las Vegas during the 1970s and '80s. Spilotro managed the Outfit's illegal casino profits (the "skim") when four of the casinos, The Stardust, The Fremont, The Hacienda, and The Marina, were managed by Frank Rosenthal, replacing Outfit member John Roselli in Las Vegas. He was the leader of the "Hole in the Wall Gang", which he formed in Las Vegas when he moved there in 1971. Spilotro eventually ran afoul of his organized crime overseers who disapproved of his handling of their Las Vegas affairs, and who then arranged his murder on June 14, 1986. Pesci received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Tommy Devito, who was really based on Lucchese family mobster Tommy “two guns” DeSimone. Thomas James DeSimone (May 24, 1950 – disappeared January 14, 1979) was an Italian-American mobster associated with New York City's Lucchese crime family who is alleged to have participated in both the Air France robbery and the Lufthansa heist. Eugene “Nick the Blade” was a made man in the Pittsburgh mafia (LaRocca Family). Nick the Blade was once caught on FBI surveillance snorting a line of coke with one hand and peeing off a 3rd story balcony with the other. He is most famous however for being Henry Hills “Pittsburgh connection” as depicted in the movie Goodfellas. After serving 28 years, Gesuale was released on October 31, 2014. Prohibited from returning to Pittsburgh because of threats he made against law enforcement figures during his trial, he relocated to Florida. The 72-year-old may have been an ex-con, but he still displayed plenty of flair. “He had a Rolls-Royce at the halfway house when he first got out,” a prisoner who served time with Gesuale tells OZY. “It was a badass Rolls that he bought for 100 grand in 1985. His sister held onto it that whole time for him.” Not even two years out of prison, Gesuale was at Past Times Restaurant and Bar in Ormond Beach when he dropped dead from a heart attack while enjoying his usual glass of Pinot Grigio.
