A03
"No come back here and hug me dammit!"
"I told you it'd be funny." Gareth stage whispered to Steve the following Monday, as Eddie proceeded to cause his usual amount of chaos in the lunchroom.
Tiff just shook her head.
"Come on, just do it and then tell everyone I'm better!" Eddie shrieked again, loud enough to be heard across the school. Possibly into the parking lot, given the winces and glares their peers tossed Eddie's way.
Jeff had his own head in his hands having been Eddie's prior cuddle victim and still suffering the consequences from it.
"I hate you." He groaned, and every single person knew he was talking to Gareth. "I cannot believe you told him his stupid hugs didn't even compare to Steve's. He almost broke my back this morning!"
Which wasn't an understatement--Gareth himself had dodged his best friend's aggressive hugs only by bolting to his first class, then acting like a ninja as he snuck about all day.
He'd even dropped to the floor and army-crawled at one point.
Now he stayed close to Steve, blatantly using the jock as a meat shield.
"Anyone have any ideas on how we can get him to chill out?" Stewart asked, from where he'd taken refuge under the lunch table.
Their second eldest member put up with many things, but drew the line at bodily injury by overly affectionate metalhead.
"Same as always." Jeff grumbled, making sure Gareth saw his glare. "We wait him out."
"Tiff!" Eddie whined, whirling around, hands reaching out for her.
"You touch me Munson and I'll burn the trigonometry notes I promised you." Tiffany threatened without looking up from her book.
"Fine." Eddie wheeled right back around. "Graaaaant-!"
"This could take days!" Stewart complained, acting like a man caged. "I can't wait much longer!"
'Dramatic, the whole lot of them.' Gareth thought fondly, knowing he was just as bad.
"Okay. Seriously, how are we fixing this?" Jeff said sourly, as Grant once again picked Eddie up by his jacket and bodily threw him as far away as he could.
Like an eldritch being from a B horror movie, Eddie simply bounced back up and came for him again.
"His issue is that he thinks I'm the better cuddler, right? Nothing else?" Steve said thoughtfully.
"Yes." Groaned the other four in unison, as Grant laid a hand on Eddie's forehead, the latter pinwheeling his arms like a cartoon character.
Steve nodded once, before his face morphed into something devastatingly smug. "Yeah we're screwed."
Jeff switched targets from Gareth to glare at Steve instead. "Really Harrington?"
"I'm back to Harrington now? Jeff, man, you wound me." Steve faked a gasp, putting a hand over his heart.
It made Gareth grin, if only because Steve wouldn't have done that a month ago. "God I love when you're a bitch."
Steve looked over at him and winked.
"Just for that, we should make you cuddle with him." Stewart grumbled. "Tell him he can decide for himself who's better!"
Which of course killed the playful look on Steve's face.
Two pairs of shoes proceeded to kick at Stewart (who dodged Jeff's only to be nailed by Tiffany's far more tactical aim.)
Except when Gareth though about it, it actually wasn't a half-bad idea.
If one pitched it right.
"You know," Gareth said slowly, a plan forming. It was half-baked, but it'd work. "--you could end this pretty easily if you did. You  have the power."
"Are we being serious right now?" Jeff grumped. "This does not feel like we're being serious."
Gareth ignore him.
"You up for one last cuddle, Sir Carrington?"  He asked, playfully.
He got a flat look in return. "You've got to be kidding me. You're seriously suggesting the solution here is for me and Eddie to cuddle."
"I am indeed." Gareth said with a grin. "So long as it's an absolutely terrible cuddle."
That got an interesting reaction.
"Good luck, I'm an amazing cuddler." Steve huffed, offended--and it looked like he actually believed it.
A curiosity, considering even with everyone announcing themselves before touching him he still got jumpy.
"Then pretend." Gareth wheedled. "You don't even have to do it for that long. Sneeze in his ear and he'll be done for."
He got a few grossed out looks for that, but it was worth it all to see Steve growing more comfortable with the idea.
"If I were to do anything of the sort I wouldn't sneeze in his ear." The jock retorted, but he looked contemplative.
"I'm sure you could come up with something else. " Gareth suggested, and gave his best, award winning smile as he said it. "You're creative when cornered."
No ulterior motives here, no sir!
"I know what you're doing, Gareth." Steve said, calling him out immediately. "But I might be convinced to take a hit for the team--for a price. My reputation would be on the line."
"What do you want?" Stewart asked immediately, more than a little desperate as Eddie carried on in the background.
"Well..." Steve trailed off, slowly meeting each and every one of them in the eye. "what are you offering?"
"You know what?" Jeff said, putting his head back in his hands. " Just for that, you and Gareth both are on my shit list."
"I'll bake you those marble brownies you wanted and get right back off it." Steve said, the smug air only growing as Jeff sighed loudly.
"Name your price, Harrington." Stewart said, talking over Jeff's second, overly dramatic sigh. "You want some D&D treasure, or an item for your character? You got it. You want a fucking," He paused, eyes scrunching up in thought. "--new basketball? Or whatever sport ball you're into right now?"
"Not even close." Steve told him.
Jeff sighed a third time, loud and obnoxious.
"Why does this always fall down to me?" Tiff asked the ceiling, as though God himself might respond back with the answer. She tilted her head back down, aiming to make eye contact with Steve. "You're in Rucker's class right? I'll write your poly-sci paper. Highest grade I will guarantee is a B, and that is because it would be suspicious if you looked like you suddenly had strong, A-grade opinions on current, geopolitical policies."
Steve snapped and pointed towards her. "Sold!" He called, mimicking an auctioneer.
Smooth as butter, he turned towards Hurricane Eddie. "Hey Munson!"
In two seconds the jock had summoned that cocky persona of his, wearing a smarmy smile like a cloak. It was getting easier and easier to tell which "bitchy Steve" was the real one and which one was a total front.
(Tiffany had decided the man was a mean girl at his core and honestly, the label stuck.
But Mean Girl Steve was a hell of a lot different than King Steve--or any of the other overly confident swaggering personas Steve adopted like a second skin.)
For for all the preparation he'd had, was still rigid most of the time Gareth had occupied his lap, only relaxing when the younger boy had gotten Eddie so wound up their eldest friend couldn't form coherent sentences.
Now, as Steve strode over and issued the challenge of a cuddle off during the next Hellfire game, he was already less stiff.
Eddie had that effect on people. Particularly ones who had crushes on him.
"This is the stupidest thing I've ever been involved in." Tiffany complained.
"Is it Tiff? Is it really?" Jeff challenged as he finally sat up.
"She's definitely forgetting the purple griffin incident." Grant said, completely ignoring what was going down on the other end of the table as he took advantage of Eddie being distracted to make his escape.
"Fine." Tiff conceded before anyone could list anything else off, "But it's at least in the top five."
"This Friday, Harrington." Eddie announced loudly then, fire in his eyes and a finger in Steve's face. "Me and you. It is on."
"Hope you're ready to lose." Steve taunted.
It was hilarious as it was ridiculous.
Which meant of course, that dumb shit had to get in the way of it.

Steve backslid the next morning.
Worse, he kept backsliding, growing worse throughout the week until the person left looked a whole lot like the guy they’d dragged to their table all those months ago.
He sat silently next to Eddie during lunch, only speaking if asked a direct question, all banter and playful bitchiness gone.
He avoided Hellfire’s members in the hallway, Stewart reporting he had been uncharacteristically silent during their one shared class.
Most damning?
He’d flinched when Eddie had done their dumb little “shoulder bumping” routine.
Which officially meant that ghost Steve was back.
(“I didn’t realize how Steve was our little ray of sunshine and positivity until he stopped being it.” Tiff complained, idly spinning a pencil in the library. “Worse, I didn’t think I’d miss it.”
Gareth, who definitely wasn’t skipping again, agreed wholeheartedly.)
Not even Eddie's antics got a smile out of Steve. He really tried too, to the point where Gareth was starting to worry his best friend was going to do something dramatic just to get a little chuckle.
Steve at least, picked up on the fact he was freaking out all of Hellfire when Grant started to get blunt with his questions.
A part of Gareth (the part that appreciated Grant’s bluntness, instead of the rest of him, that wanted to duck and cover in case it made things worse) was curious if this would finally get Steve to open up; but instead it just made things worse.
Within two direct “No really dude, what's wrong?” ’s, Steve retired the haunted act and instead brought the downright freaky return of one Hawkins' jock's doing a real good job at pretending he was okay.
Pity for him this wasn't Tommy H or the rest of the public Steve was trying to fool.
This was a group of people who tended to be hyper aware of things, ranging from their surroundings to their people. (And then went on to play, as Steve regularly teased them, “one giant math game about it.”)
Not a single one of them was fooled by the act, or the evasive answers Steve pulled out of his ass when the rest of them all, individually, in their own way, tried to figure out if their newest member was okay or just having a few bad days.
"He told me he wasn't feeling good." Jeff said, worrying his lip with his teeth when they all finally convened together after school to discuss it.
"Are we choosing to buy that?" Tiffany asked, one eyebrow raised in a challenge. "He's been off since Tuesday. It's Thursday."
Grant huffed an agreement, arms crossed over his chest.
"Devils advocate, people are typically sick for more than one day." Stewart pointed out. "Dudes probably got allergies or something, it is the end of May."
"It's not allergies." Gareth said flatly.
Allergies usually came with symptoms like coughing and sneezing.
They did not come with vacant stares and falling over one's feet when their friends said hello in the hallway.
"Well clearly he doesn't want to talk about it so maybe he'll just…work himself out of whatever it is." Jeff reasoned. "I don't know if we should really push him about it."
"And miss out on another week's worth of baking?" Stewart bemoaned, as if Steve's lack of treats was the sole reason they were concerned.
Tiff swiped at him with her paperback.
Interestingly, Eddie had yet to say much on the matter. Everyone knew he was just as worried. The guy was a secret teddy bear, and they all still knew to warn him if a dog so much as got hurt in a movie. Worse, Steve was one of his "sheepies" as he so lovingly called them all, and was notoriously defensive of Hellfire as a whole.
Gareth had been eyeing him throughout their little gathering, watching as his best friend tapped his foot anxiously.
The guy seemed lost in his own head and while it wasn't completely unusual, it too, was odd behavior.
Gareth squinted at him, making eye contact and asking if he was alright with the kind of subtle facial expressions only best friends could pull.
Eddie didn't respond, but instead, looked away.
'That's a no.' Gareth thought, as the conversation around them wound down, without anyone coming up with any solid plans on what they were going to do about the Steve situation.
This is exactly how he ended up following Eddie home.
"Inviting ourselves over I see." The elder teen muttered out of the corner of his mouth as Gareth chased him to his van, hopping into the passenger seat instead of heading for his bicycle.
"It's a good night for a smoke sess." Gareth responded casually.
"You hate smoking weed." Eddie returned with a snort. "You prefer edibles."
"Just think of what we could do with Harrington's baking skills." Gareth replied wistfully--but made sure to watch his friend.
There it was. The slightest of weird expressions, flitting over Eddie's face like a shadow before he hid it back into whatever cage it escaped from.
"You're worried." Gareth guessed. Not like that was a hard one.
"Aren't we all, Gare-Bear?" Eddie returned, eyes never leaving the road.
He pretended like he couldn't feel Gareth scanning him, taking in the too tense shoulders and the shuttered, guarded look on his face.
"You know something." Gareth guessed after a moment.
The declaration made his best friend flinch, hands squeezing tight on the wheel.
'Got you.'
"Are you going to spill or do I have to blackmail it out of you?"
"Please Gary you have nothing you could blackmail me with." Eddie challenged with a snort. "I am shameless."
A challenge that could not be ignored, if only because Gareth wanted to remind him who had had the upper hand since Steve had crashed into Hellfire.
"Really? So you wouldn't mind if I show Steve those photos of the time we dressed up as a Barbie “ken doll” band for Jeff’s sister’s birthday? You know, the one were you were wearing that pink boa and the star glasses--”
A hand shot out, clapping Gareth over the mouth.
"Thank you, I got it!" Eddie said, voice an octave higher than normal. "Why do you still even have that!?"
"My mom." Gareth managed to get out, even if it was horribly muffled between Eddie's bony fingers.
"Curse that woman's thirst for nostalgia and scrapbooks." Eddie hissed, as if his mom was some grand villain.
"You love her crafts, you ass." Gareth rolled his eyes, wiping his mouth when Eddie finally removed his hand. "Now spill."
"I'm not sure this is what's causing it." The elder cautioned after a pause just long enough to be dramatic. "But rumor has it his parents are home."
"You think they're why he's acting all…" Gareth trailed off, unsure of what to compare Steve to and not wanting to say a kicked dog.
Eddie hummed in agreement. "Every time I walk into Steve's house, the place starts off feeling like a living tomb. There’s got to be a reason for that, and the only one I can think of is that his parents want that. The tomby-ness."
Gareth leaned back in his seat, contemplating. Turned the idea of Steve's mysterious parents over in his head, comparing it to how the guy's house did have a sort of museum quietness to it.
It wasn't that the place was huge, or even that Steve was typically its solo occupant beyond the occasional weekends one or both of his parents "popped in."
It was the perfectness of it.
How on any given day a photographer could show up to take pictures and the place would be camera ready.
A sort of--trophy house.
He went on to tell his best friend this.
"It’s like a shrine to their success." Eddie added an hour later, when they'd resettled onto his couch, trying to break down just what exactly about Steve's house made it so weird.
They'd shared a beer each--some gross kind that a cat couldn't have gotten buzzed off of, and Gareth had just finished helping Eddie select their chosen flower to roll when an awkward sound erupted throughout the trailer.
If Gareth knew any better, he'd say it almost sounded like someone was knocking on the shitty aluminum door.
Couldn't be though, because he'd never in his life heard someone knock--Eddie's uncle Wayne had a key, and every member of Hellfire was aware that the window in Eddie's room had a broken lock.
To get it open you just had to push at it from a specific angle, and with a few tugs it'd come right up for you.
The noise came again, this time a little louder.
Gareth looked to Eddie, and found his friend holding all the weed.
Understanding flashed between them, and Gareth stood up to answer the door as Eddie magically made the drugs disappear.
Thankfully, it wasn't the cops.
"Hey." Steve said, standing awkwardly on Eddie's porch, looking like he desperately wanted inside but wasn't sure he'd be allowed in. "Eddie said I could just come over if I needed to…?"
He trailed off, awkwardly miming smoking with his fingers.
Gareth couldn't hold in the snort.
"You're in luck man, because I just finished rolling a few." He said, stepping back to let their wayward jock in.
"Hey Stevie." Eddie drawled, now in the process of making the weed reappear. "Come in, have a seat, take a puff."
Rather than sit on the admittedly small couch, Steve chose instead to drop his ass to the floor, leaving the open spot above him to Gareth. He waited until the younger was seated before he leaned back, broad shoulders brushing both his friends legs as he relaxed.
Eddie’s hand twitched, as though he wanted to run it through Steve’s hair and thought better of it.
(Knowing him as Gareth did, that was very likely exactly what the weird little movement of his was.)
“You wanna tell us what’s goin’ on?” Eddie said softly, long after all three of them had an inhale of the joint Eddie had lit, sitting in relaxed silence. "Cause you've been pretty down, Stevie."
"Yeah." Steve agreed hollowly. "Sorry."
Eddie nudged his leg with a foot, then offered him the blunt again. "Don't apologize man, we can't all be sunshine and rainbows."
“You’d be surprised at how many people expect an apology for just that.” Steve muttered.
Gareth traded careful looks over Steve’s head, Eddie turning back and resolutely plowing on.
“You don’t have to, but talking tends to make people feel better.”
“Does it?” Steve asked, before taking a slow, measured inhale of the joint.
Idly he added; "Gareth you can't roll for shit."
"Fuck you dude!" The younger teen exclaimed, instantly offended, but knew a redirect when he saw one. "You try rolling them then!" He snatched the joint out of Steve's hands, huffing audibly.
It was an offer. If Steve didn't want to take the opening Eddie had given him, he could instead take the out Gareth had given.
The option reminded him of Alice in Wonderland (Gareth’s actual favorite movie, even if he tells everyone else it's The Empire Strikes Back)
Specifically when Alice was lost, standing before a split path and asking advice from the Cheshire Cat.
Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?" Alice asks.
The Cheshire Cat spins its head, smiling its smile as it answers;“ That depends a good deal on where you want to get to."
Steve proved himself to be a stronger man that Gareth had given him credit for, and took the harder path.
"My parents are home." He said, eyes glued to the TV in front of him, as if that would make the conversation easier.
Perhaps it did.
Eddie to his credit, didn't treat the declaration as anything important. "Yeah? They bring you something nice back from New York?"
"Florida this time and no."
Steve fussed with a thread on his sweater for a moment, a single yellow thread unspooling from the end. It looked like he’d been tugging at it a lot, a small imperfection on an otherwise expensive looking piece of clothing.
"Apparently I've been such a disappointment they're demanding I get a job." He began again. "They want me to learn the realities of hard work."
Gareth traded puzzled glances with Eddie.
Steve had never shied from hard work.
Everyone had heard the story of how he’d won over every coach in Hawkins' High’s favor. It was practically school legend, since he was the first freshmen to take up and finish some bullshit exercise challenge they hosted every year.
The guy even had a herd of some of the most obnoxious children he looked after, without pay.
There was no way the source of whatever was eating at him was a summer job.
Or perhaps, not just a summer job.
"Summer jobs fucking suck, but I hear that new mall’s finally finished.” Gareth said hesitantly. “You could probably get in somewhere there before you head off to college.”
"I'm not going to college. Didn't get into any." Steve said flatly.
Ah-ha.
"I only applied to the one Nancy made me." He added, still refusing to look at either of them. "Couldn't bring myself to apply to any of the others."
Which--odd, but it wasn't the oddest thing ever. Some people just didn't like school, or traditional learning methods.
No matter how much Gareth's counselor insisted otherwise.
"My dad found that out too." Steve said after a moment.
"College isn't the fucking answer to life." Gareth continued. "There's plenty of other things you can do."
Eddie’s head cocked, like a dog who’d been presented with a puzzle.
Steve shrugged. "That's not my issue with it, but the old man thinks it is. He keeps insisting that the free rides are over now." His voice kicked into a deep mockery of his fathers at the end, the condescending tone coming through loud and clear. “Thinks I'm here to screw my girlfriend and party my life away. Wouldn't hear me about not wanting to go to college, at all. Definitely didn't care that I broke up with Nancy." The last part was muttered, almost said more to himself and for himself than it was for them.
Eddie’s head tilted the other way.
"Did you have an idea of what you wanted to do?" Gareth asked. He figured it they knew, they might be at least able to help.
He got a shrug in response.
Gareth was about to open his mouth--probably to put his foot in it, but hell if Steve wanted help brainstorming what he did want to do with his life, or at least get positive support from someone who wasn't a rich asshole, it might as well start here.
Eddie beat him to the punch though, because as usual, Eddie was able to track the weird unspoken thing that no one else could pick up on.
"It's the kids, isn't it?" Eddie asked softly. Reverently. "You don't want to leave Hawkins, because of the kids."
Steve took another sip of beer, waving off the joint Gareth offered him. For someone who'd come to smoke he'd barely touched it or the beer, but then no one here would push.
It was pretty obvious, (to Gareth anyway) that the weed had been a flimsy excuse to begin with.
"When those damn kids started trying to trap the--dogs." Steve started, correcting his slip so smoothly Gareth almost didn't pick up that he'd intended to say something else. “I was the only damn adult they could find.”
Steve gave up fiddling with his sweater to tug angrily at his beer tab, twisting and pulling at it.
"They had figured out where the dogs would be. Had an entire meat bucket they wanted to use as bait and but I was the only damn person to try and at least wrangle the little shits. You wanna know how they found me?" He picked up steam now, and Eddie couldn't even be satisfied that he'd managed to hit the nail on the head because clearly whatever was happening here was the actual thing Steve needed to get off his chest.
"Football practice?" Gareth asked mostly to fill in the tension-filled pause, and then ducked from the swat Eddie aimed his way.
Steve blew out a harsh, mocking breath.
"Dustin found me on the way to Nancy's house, where I was planning on apologizing. Had flowers and everything."
Oh.
Steve's tone said a hell of a lot more than that, the raw emotion making Gareth's own stomach roll.
A careful glance showed an equally punched-out expression on Eddie's face, the metalhead having physically reared back like Steve's words had struck him.
"What were you apologizing for?" He asked, recovering faster than Gareth could.
"Honestly man? I don't know." Steve laughed then, a harsh little disbelieving noise. "I just knew Nancy had said--well she said some shit while drunk, and wasn't able to say some shit sober, and I realized after that maybe I--I rushed her or something you know?"
He ran a hand through his hair, a self soothing behavior. "Or that I did, fuck I don't know. She's Nancy Wheeler, she's smarter than me by a longshot, so if she was mad, than I figured I must be at fault." Steve shrugged, like that was a fact of life.
Eddie interrupted immediately. "She's not smarter than you."
"I--what?"
"Nancy isn't smarter than you.' Eddie repeated firmly. "She's booksmart, Stevie. School smart. Nancy Wheeler absolutely owns tests and papers and things you need to study for, and she’s a hell of a researcher--but she's not people smart."
"What?" Steve repeated incredulously and there Gareth caught a flash of bitchy Steve.
The real one, who'd been shoved aside by the apathetic version.
"Have you ever seen that girl get fixated on something? She's tenacious, gets her teeth in and won't let go.” Eddie snapped his teeth, shaking his head while growling like a dog.
Gareth rolled his eyes, but a ghost of a smile graced Steve’s face.
“But she hasn't figured out how that hurts people yet. She's caught up in getting the results. She's not intentionally unkind, she's just--a little out of touch." Eddie flopped back against the couch, making a grabby gesture for the joint Gareth now held. “People like you--”
Here, he poked Steve in the chest, before reaching past him to wave his hand obnoxiously in Gareth’s face for the joint (and get smacked at for the effort) “are people smart.”
"That's not--no." Steve protested head jerking from Eddie's fingers to Eddie's face, but it was weak, his eyes wide as saucers.
"Yes.” Eddie mocked, but it was in jest, proven by the easy, soft smile he gave Steve. “You said it yourself. The kids go to you, man. They go to you even now, when Nancy or Jonathan could be driving them all over town. You get people; how they work, how they tick, what makes them happy or sad, and people are drawn to you because of that.”
“Jonathan drives.” Steve muttered in disagreement.
“And yet we all witnessed the clown car act when all those kids came out of your backseat two weekends ago.” Eddie refuted. “You’re just as smart as Nancy is, Steve. Just in a different way.”
Steve frowned.
“My parents don’t see it like that.”
“Your parents can get fucked, Sweetheart.”
That was pushing it, but Steve didn't comment on the nickname. Never commented on any nicknames Eddie came up with, beyond the occasional eye roll.
Which is right about when the phone rang.
They all glanced towards it, then down at their respective watches.
It was well past midnight.
"Think that's Wayne?" Gareth asked, eyebrows raising as Eddie stood to answer the phone.
His friend just shrugged, before picking up.
"Munson Mortuary, you stab em we slab em." He chirped as he pressed the phone to his ear.
"Tiffy-Taffy isn't it kinda late for--whoa." Eddies easy smile flipped, back going ramrod straight. "Slow down, what happened?" And oh, shit, that was Eddie's "somethings wrong and I'm going to fix it" voice.
Gareth sat up, making sure the joint Eddie had put down was out as he stared worriedly at Eddie.
"Okay. Gareth and Steve are with me, we're all coming." Eddie finished, prompting Steve to also sit up. "Stay there and for the love of God, tell Stewart not to touch anything else."
"What happened." Steve and Gareth demanded as one.
It'd be funny if the look on Eddie's face wasn't so serious.
"I'm afraid I'm going to have to break my promise about not going to the lab, Steve." He said, a hand going to tug anxiously at his hair.
"What?" Steve said, immediately on the defensive.
Then; "Why?"
"Because all our darling friends went to the Hawkin's lab without us. Apparently they ran into some kids on the way and now Stewart's stuck in a hole."
“All of them?” Gareth questioned, because sure, yeah he could see Stewart doing it. Could see Grant and even Jeff really, but Tiffany? Out exploring an abandoned lab that had killed people?
On a school night?
"She's gonna give us the full story when we get there, she called from the nearest payphone. Had some kid who kept interrupting her so she just gave me the basics, but apparently Stewart is really stuck, and for some reason the damn kids won't let anyone try to get him from some other door. They keep saying it's not safe or some shit." Eddie's anxious tugging grew as he moved to snatch up his wallet and keys, walking and talking as it were.
Gareth had expected a reaction out of Steve then, but  what he hadn't expected was Steve to surge to his feet in a near panic.

You mess up, big time. Part 2
Jason Todd x Venom (kind of get Tim into it just for fun
Warning: messy plot, curse, violence.
“I didn’t come all this way for a coffee, Eddie.” Jason, who is clearly annoyed.
“Someone wake up on the wrong side of the bed. I bought you coffe so would you do me a favour and hack into Life Foundation?”
“What, you are still on that? What are you looking for anyway?”
“Hear me out, I got and interview with them and I really need something solid, so it would at least seem like I know what I am talking about and might push them to talk.”
“They are actually doing an interview with you? Do they not know what you have done?” Which mean all those corrupted company Eddie took down in the past.
“I guess not. Or they are playing ignorance.”
“Yea, big company do have a tendency of doing that.”
“So, can you do some hacking or not? Kind of need it by tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow, are you serious?”
“Yes, sorry is so last minute.”
“Fine... you own me big time! That coffee is shit by the way.” “Since big time reporter need his super secret document, I better get to work. I am going to send you the file tonight.”
“Yea, yea. I own you, thanks!”
Jason is not the greatest hacker if he have to be completely honest, he is more physical like making a bomb and using his gun right in the action. Not behind a computer screen.
Jason spended hours trying to hack into the system of Life Foundation, but still cant get into the research part. And he decided to ask for foreign aid, aka Tim.
“What do you want Jason?”
“Are you out on patrol today?”
“No.”
“Great, can you help me hack into Life Foundation? The new research they are doing specifically.”
“You in San Fansico?”
“Yea, can you help??”
“Why are you doing this?” It’s actually quite surprising that Tim would ask anything, in their line of ‘work’ hacking into big company is like a daily chore, so that should not be anything but ordinary. Well apparently not Jason guess.
“It’s just a favour for a friend.”
“Don’t know what you are getting yourself into, but be careful.” “Okay. I got it. Jus.. they are doing all kind of experiment on human.”
“Well, that’s was quick. Whatever that is mind send me a copy of it?” Jason wonder if he should call earlier.
“Just did. I got to go Bruce is calling me.”
“Alright, thanks. Own you a coffee, Tim.”
While Eddie go and have an interview with Carlton Drake, Jason have a plan of his own as well. There is a researcher position open in the company, it does beg the question of why is ther a position open. But see how much Carlton love doing experiment on human, it will not surprise Jason that a unlucky researcher might end up being a lab rat for Carlton. In Jason opinion building a fake identity with extensive science background is much easier than hacking. Peter Rodd it is.
“Hi, Peter. I’m Dora Skirth the chief scientist for this project.” Dora leading Jason ‘Peter’ to a control panel infront of a glass cell with a round vault with some kind of goo in it have a rufous-ish colour.
“Keep an eye on this, and the monitor over there.”
“Okay.”
Jason sit down infront of the cell and start monitoring the wave and movement as told by Dr.Skirth. Jason phone buzz.
“I mess up, they kick me out.” Text from Eddie. Jason is far from surprise, Eddie is very much like him could be over power by instinct and mess things up. Hot headed. Implosive.
“Well, I got a position in their lab. But cant move yet, probably have to wait till everyone is off.” Jason send a text back to Eddie.
Then Jason hear a familiar voice, it’s Tim. Jason lean over the panel and see, it is Tim, who currently is talking with Carlton Drake. Then it click, they are both Drake! They are related.
“Why did you hack into my system, cousin.” Oh they are cousin, that’s totally make sense Jason think. It’s very unusual that Tim would get caught like that, Carlton must be good at that.
“Just curious about your research.” Good going Tim, he really is not the best liar.
“You can just ask you know, cousin.” Then Carlton start leading Tim toward where Jason is.
“Let me show you.” “Open the door.” Carlton ordered which is for Jason, since his is siting at the control panel. Jason of course do as the man said, slightly panic because don’t know what Tim reaction would be when he saw him and what the man plan to do. After the door to the glass cell open, Carlton urge Tim to go in and show him the goo in the vault.
“We call them symboite, they can’t survive without a host on earth. So we are trying to find one for them.” Jason as this instant know exactly wha going to happen, start to think we he can do to get Tim out.
Tim didn’t realise Jason standing outside and behind the panel, probably too occupy by the fact that he might very soon be consumed by some sort of alien life form. Jason is wearing a lab coat but he did have a flash grenade on him in case he need a quick exit. He just really hope the impact is enough to break the glass, so he throw it like a baseball pitcher and the glass did break. Jason immediately jump across the panel and grap Tim, and start run. Jason did not realise at that moment Tim is not the only one he break out of the lab.
Security is already chasing them, and with guns. Jason really regret not having more than a flash grande on him. This is just not very great odds.
“Hum, so what’s the plan?” Tim ask when they turn a corner and loses the gruad for a bit.
“Do I look like someone that have a plan.”
Tim somehow can still roll his eye while they both running.
Then they heat a dead end, look like a back door but its lock. Then Jason without thinking just through himself to the door and the door break open like some miracle.
“You are stronger than I thought.”
“Well, I’m stronger than I thought.”
Lucky for Jason and Tim the Life Foundation is like a maze, so losing some security guard is easier then they thought. But unlucky for the security guard.  
“We lose them.” a guard rush back to the lab and report back to Carlton 
“How can you lose them we are on a fucking island. Where can they go? Keep looking, and bring back my creature.” Everyone in the lab is stunted by how furious Carlton is. It is rare to see the stoic and ascetic CEO so emotional.  
“Copy that.”
“Still can’t believe we make it out alive.” Tim sign after they cross the bridge and on the way back to down town.
“Really? I definitely had been in worst situation than that.”
“Always hated Carl but never thought he would actually try to kill me.”
“Hah, another sibling trying to kill you? He need to get in line.”
“Very funny Jason.”
Jason start to feel a bit nauseous and dizzy, which is not a good thing cause he is the one driving the car.
“Hey, hey! Watch it!” Tim yell, and grip the steering wheel and avoided the tree they nearly crashed into and stoped on the side walk.
“Sorry, feeling a bit under the weather.”
“Yea, its been a long day. How about let me drive you home.”
“I got a safe house in china town.”
“Seriously, how did you get safe house everywhere.”
“I am pretty sure you know how.”
Few more turn, they arrive and Jason is sweating like he just have a shower.
“Hey, you sure you are okay? You look terrible.”
“Probably caught something in the lab, but don’t worry I think it going to off soon.”
“Okay, just call me if you need anything.”
“Thanks.”
Jason can feel his phone buzzing but he is to tired to even look at who that might be. Dozing off on the way through his kitchen, and fell down on the floor.
When Jason wake up he his cover in chocolate powder.
“What the fuck?”
“FINALLY, DO YOU HAVE ANYMORE OF THAT.”
“What? Who’s there?” Looking around his apartment but no one seem to be there. That’s new, the joker never show up like that.
“I AM NO JOKER.”
“Who... who is this again?” He can see a slight reflection of a rufous colour creature on the window. Jason instinctly run toward the window and open it. But there is nothing there.
“I AM TOXIN.”
“Toxin? Like chemical and stuff?”
“NO. YOU PEOPLE CALL US SYMBIOTE, WE COME FROM A PLANET, KLYNTAR.”
{Oh, right symbiote...Jason feel like he got a parasite or something.}
“I AM NOT A PARASITE!”
“What!? You can hear my thoughts?”
“JUST LIKE YOU CAN HEAR ME.” “ENOUGH CHIT CHAT I WANT FOOD!”
“What do you eat though?”
“BRAIN ORGAN SOMETHING FRESH.”
“No, no brain and no organ.”
Jason walk to the kitchen and try to find something to eat, don’t know if it’s the influence of the symbiote or he is just genuinely hungry. Jason is so glad that he just stock up with microwave meal, he love to cook but these days he rarely have time for that. Jason grip one and go put it in the microwave. 
“THAT I WANT TO EAT THAT!”
“Chocolate?” Jason pass the chocolate to the symbiote who had peek out of Jason’s shoulder into a little puppet like figure and quickly snitch the chocolate out of Jason’s hand and finished it without even chewing. “hey! watch it, you nearly bite my hand off.” 
“DO YOU HAVE ANYMORE OF THAT?” 
Jason look into the cupboard to see if he still have anymore, but no luck. 
“I will go buy some after I finish that.” Jason gesturing toward his microwave meal. 
“HURRY. OR I MIGHT JUST EAT YOUR LIVER.”
“okay, calm down. I will hurry.” Jason think his is short tempered enough, surprise to find ‘someone’ who is worst then him. 
Jason finish the meal even though it burned his mouth. 
“Hey, Jason. Did you have someone over?” The nice old lady the live next door asked him. 
“Oh, no. I am just on the phone. Sorry if I am too loud.” 
“No, no. Don't worry about it dear. I brake some chocolate chip cookie you want some?”
“I am on my way out, maybe next time. thanks.” When Jason about to turn around and wave the old lady goodbye, and the symbiote yelled. “I WANT SOME.” (Jason is so glad the symbiote is not actually yelling and only he can hear.) “Second thought, I would like some.” 
The old lady put some cookie in a paper bag and hand it to Jason. This make Jason miss the cookie Alfred made, which is one of the reason Jason initially decided not to have the cookie. Nostalgia never mean anything good to him. 
Jason walk to the fire escape stairs and start offering the cookie to the symbiote.

She is the throbbing lifeblood of the Shuswap, a phantasmagoria of violence, chaos and intoxicating beauty, and she thunders along relentless while human beings live short and brutal lives under her beguiling influence. She barely notices each time her currents claim a life, as cold corpses bounce against the riverbed, and her machinations are beyond human comprehension. She has a grand plan, but nobody knows what it is. Shuswap Joe spent his formative years living among the Indigenous fisherfolk who had saved him as a baby, but the river was the closest thing he ever had to a mother. She woke him in the morning, whispered to him in a soothing susurrus all day long, then sang him to sleep in his solitary home high among the trees. Every night he would lay listening to the forest’s tumult of groaning, creaking conversation and wonder where he fit into this world. He had no way to know it, but he was quickly becoming the spitting image of his strapping gold miner father while adopting the lifestyle of his gypsy hermit mother. All he could do was imagine who they were, but he also understood that time only flows in one direction. It’s useless to fight the current for very long.
Long after sunset one night Shuswap Joe was pondering his parentage, at 12 years old, when the night came alive with a strange electricity. Above him the moon had a skeletal scowl, and the surrounding trees all stood silent, as if holding their breath. Instinctively he rolled on to his stomach and gazed down from his nest to the river, scanning the moon-glinting surface for any sign of intruders. Earlier that season he’d gotten into a friendly tussle with a black bear over a fresh salmon, so he had a healthy appreciation for the dangers of wildlife, but he knew that the true villains were always human. With their guns, their alcohol, their greed. He was entranced and frightened by these settlers, and wondered if one day he would join their sordid ranks. He looked down in the direction of the weir, a large wooden dam that had been recently constructed near the river’s mouth. Multiple sluice channels were open, allowing the lake to tumble through in tandem torrents, creating a soothing soundscape perfect for his sleeping hours. At first Joe could see nothing out of place, and he nearly disregarded the strange clench in his stomach. But then, from out of the darkness, came a slow-moving tree trunk that was half-submerged in the current. Its waving branches clawed maliciously at the sky. Mounted at the front was a flickering torch that illuminated the purple waters surrounding it, as well as the limp body of a dead logger lashed at its base. Perched atop the black wood like some giant arachnid was a hooded figure with long bone-white limbs. He manipulated the branches in slow, sweeping motions, and expertly guided the trunk around the bend without a sound. It was only a handful of moments before he was gone, leaving Joe to wonder if he’d been asleep or awake for this disturbing vision. Was he some sort of demon? A watery death spirit that lived on human flesh? The next night, as the moon took its rightful place among the stars, Joe waited crouched and shin-deep on the riverbank. He had become skilled at navigating the river using the detritus of the forest, careening through rapids atop a rolling log or swimming through the Canyon using a broken branch for flotation. That night he’d chosen an elbow-shaped branch, the bark peeled clean, to help him tail the spectre from the night before. And when he eventually appeared, his torch casting ominous shadows across the surface, Joe shoved into the current and allowed the river to talk hold of him. With the branch wrapped around his chest he bobbed in the darkness as the water lapped around his cheekbones. He gazed up at the silhouetted trees, which were all whispering with suspicious voices. They understood the danger he was in, whether or not he did. Eventually the current began to rumble and rage as they approached the rapid known as the Lion’s Head. Joe could see a billowing pillow of water pummelling a proud boulder directly ahead of the hellish raft, the waves hopelessly yearning for the exposed roots of a grove of trees at its zenith. His legs bounced against the jagged rocks beneath him and twice his branch was completely submerged. He fought to stay afloat. Far ahead he heard a high-pitched keening, like the song of some demented bird, echoing amidst the chaos. Was the man singing? Joe expected the man to pivot his trunk downstream, towards safety, but instead he seemed intent on driving it straight into the rock wall. Blinking through the waves, rivulets pouring from his face, he watched as multiple whirlpools gaped open on cue and swirled hungrily. The river’s grumble escalated to a thunderous roar and he kicked furiously, pointing towards the flickering flame. He was vaguely aware of the man’s skeletal arms waving towards the moon and then his body was forcibly yanked underwater. It was as if someone had grasped him by both ankles. He didn’t have time to scream or panic or fight before being consumed by the blackness. The next thing Joe knew he was retching the contents of his stomach on to wet stone. It was cool to the touch. Above him was a curved ceiling alive with dancing light, illuminated by a glowing pool beneath it. He wiped away bile with the back of his hand and examined his surroundings, dimly aware that the roar of the Lion’s Head waves were now on the other side of the wall. He rose to his feet and scanned his surroundings, his gaze eventually falling upon the snake-like limbs of the man he’d been chasing. Nestled into the twisted white roots of a tree and bathed in shadow, he looked exactly like some giant spider ready to devour him. As Joe stood agape, the man unfurled himself from his cross-legged perch and crawled towards him on all fours. His face was a horror to behold, with fiery red veins shooting through his ice white skin like river channels. His grin was a red ravage of broken teeth. “Why have you intruded upon my lair, boy? Do I not frighten you?” Joe considered for a moment, dripping. “Nothing frightens me.” He laughed. “That’s because you’re drunk on youth, and a stranger to the darkness. There’s plenty in this world that should frighten you, as it does me.” “And who are you, exactly?” “Most don’t even believe I’m real, and the rest wish I wasn’t. My name is Nanor, and it’s my job to ferry those the river claims to their final resting place. A gruesome job, perhaps, but one that needs to be done.” Nanor was perched above Joe on a rock ledge, dressed in nothing but a soiled loincloth, and his shoulder blades violently jutted out like sinister wings. He clambered down the rock on all fours until he was inches from Joe’s face, the stench of his breath thick with brimstone. His eyebrows and hair were bleached snow white but a few curled black whiskers hung from his chin. There was no way to judge how old he was, but it was clear he’d survived long past his natural lifespan. There was a strange twitch to his muscles, a jolting quality to his movements, that suggested he was being controlled by some power apart from himself. Joe forced himself to stand his ground, never backing away as the man swooped and spat his way through a meandering monologue. It was clear he hadn’t spoken to anyone for a very long time. The story began decades earlier, when Nanor was a young man flush with mining ambitions. He’d grown up alongside a woman named Lenore, and upon reaching manhood had promised to save enough money for their marriage. He set out with his rucksack into the wilderness, and signed on with an outfit that was exploring deeper and deeper into a mountain rich with silver. At the end of each day he would take off his boots and marvel at how the mud sparkled, how this precious substance had been buried and hidden among all the worthless rock. He became addicted to its sheen, scrabbling ever harder and digging ever deeper in search of its lustre. By the time he’d saved enough for a ring he knew that it wouldn’t be enough, he had to keep accumulating. They could buy an acreage, with a nice little farmhouse, lousy with farm animals and screaming with life. It was this beautiful dream that kept him spelunking further and further into the black crevices far beneath the ground. Sometimes he would forget how it was above the surface, up in the sunshine, as he became increasingly acclimatized to his subterranean solitude. “Some people think this world is here for us to ransack, to rape, and I should’ve known all that time I was yearning for silver that it would have a cost one day. That’s what you’re going to learn, kid, is there’s a cost to everything. Especially dreams.” “What happened to that woman, then?” “She had her own dreams, I guess.” The day came eventually when Nanor returned to the surface with his bounty, only to find his skin had turned translucent from its time away from the daylight. When he turned his face to the sky, basking in the sun’s warm kiss, he instantly felt a sharp sting. His cheeks split open like bacon crackling on a spit, and furious red sores erupted across his forehead and down his neck. He retreated into the darkness with licks of grey smoke curling up from his burning flesh, and when he covered his face with his hands they came away covered in an oozing pus. For days he writhed in agony, applying wet bandages that made him look mummified and horrific, as he lamented Lenore’s imagined response to this condition. How could she love someone like him, a nocturnal ghoul incapable of living among the rest of society? He couldn’t and wouldn’t ask that of her, so he convinced the mining company to issue a letter in which they informed her of his death by tragic accident. It was kinder that way. For months Nanor lived in the wilds, traveling only by night and burrowing underground during the day. Eventually he happened upon a traveling circus, and shortly after sundown he approached a mad scientist by the name of Dr. Klondike. Nanor had been impressed by his performance the day earlier, in which he introduced a number of exotic animals procured from faraway lands. He whipped blankets off water tanks that housed not only giant fish, but also squids and stingrays and all manner of bizarre aquatic creatures. The stars of his little show, though, were the electric river eels he’d retrieved from the Amazon River. While the crowd hooted in delirious delight, Dr. Klondike danced across the stage with an intricately carved flute that produced a trance-like, elegiac melody. It roused the river eels to the surface slowly, until they began to leap into the air shooting bursts of electricity and singing in their otherworldly voices. Nanor watched those river eels dance, transfixed, and knew he had to claim them for himself. It was rumoured that their electricity could cure all kinds of afflictions, why not his? “How do you kidnap a river eel, though?” Joe asked, genuinely interested. “Can they survive out of water?” Nanor shook his head. “I couldn’t steal the eels themselves, but I could steal their eggs. That night I brought Dr. Klondike a jug of his favourite hooch, and together we drank long into the night. That was when he confessed that he had a new clutch of eggs, fresh, that he’d nestled away for safekeeping. Before the liquor swept him off to unconsciousness I convinced him to show me the hiding spot. He had them swaddled in a blanket, like the baby Christ, three dark green eggs with white spots. I stole off into the night with them hidden beneath my cloak.” As Nanor spoke the pool behind him began to swirl, and Joe saw the twisted spines of river eels beginning to break the surface. One of them leaped into the air and belched up a lightning storm, illuminating the cavern, but his master barely noticed. He was too caught up in his story-telling, describing to Joe the healing effect the eels’ electricity had on him. He’d hatched the eggs beneath the Lion’s Head and watched as they grew and multiplied, growing ever smarter. He would wring their bodies in his hands until they fired their electricity straight into his veins. Under the influence of the eel’s magic he felt like he understood the world in a way he couldn’t otherwise, like the drab darkness of his existence was suddenly shot through with rainbows of throbbing energy. Eventually he couldn’t stand ordinary reality, and he returned more and more often to the river eels for his next jolt of life-giving inspiration. “What’s it feel like?” Joe asked. “The electricity, I mean.” Nanor flashed his broken teeth. “If you want to understand, you have to experience it for yourself. It’s different for everyone. The river eels know what lesson you need to learn, and how to teach it to you.” “Is it dangerous?” “Of course it is. It wouldn’t be any fun if it wasn’t.” Joe stood above the pool and watched in wonder as the river eels slithered and slid over each other. Behind him Nanor produced a flute, just like the one he’d described Dr. Klondike having, and lifted it to his lips. Music filled the chamber as Joe plunged his hands into the water and grabbed two of the dark green creatures. They struggled and writhed as he lifted them from the water, their mouths gaping open in panic. He watched with fascination as white flashes crackled from his palms, making his hair stand on end. Then one of them turned towards him and spoke a single word: “slave”. The vision that appeared before Joe’s eyes in that moment has long been immortalized in song. Untethered from time, and released from the restrictions of his mortal body, he felt himself fighting through the current of the Adams River as a spawning salmon. He felt the pinch of talons and flew dripping above the trees in the clutches of an eagle. The earth hummed as men chopped rhythmically at trees hundreds of years older than them, as they ferried the bobbing logs down the current and out to Shuswap Lake. He saw whiskey-fuelled street brawls and danced manic to the ragtime tomfoolery of the nearby settlements. He saw himself bearded and proud, commanding other men, then saw an explosion in the forest that left his cohorts blackened and coughing. Finally he saw a woman, looking over her shoulder at him, her light brown hair flapping in the wind. She was braced on a makeshift raft that was approaching the Adams Canyon, and on her face was a look of fearful determination. She was ready for whatever was coming. “The future is coming whether you’re ready for it or not,” the woman said. “You already know what you’re supposed to do.” “No, I don’t.” “You do, boy. Listen to the river.” Joe closed his eyes, allowing the current to drown out these visions, and the scene transformed. He was in the midst of circus tents billowing in the evening wind, turning in circles to get his bearings. Suddenly a much younger, much more human-looking version of Nanor bulled into him. He rushed past with an unfriendly growl, his cloak flapping, and moments later Joe found himself in the tent of Dr. Klondike. The river eels banged against their tank walls as Nanor chased the crazed scientist around the room, ultimately pinning him to the dirt and strangling the life from him while they shrieked. He watched as Nanor tipped the body into the tank, watched the eels tear their master into tiny wriggling pieces, and watched as the murderer cackled. Human blood dribbled from the edges of his mouth, and in his eyes was a deranged intoxication — he was now hooked on death. The dreams began to come more rapidly, swirling storm-like before his eyes before dissipating just as quickly. Nanor swept from the darkness, clutching unsuspecting humans and quickly dispatching them with his wormy fingers around their throats. Joe watched as he grabbed first a fancily dressed courtesan, and then a wealthy businessman, and finally a drunken logger. He didn’t discriminate when it came to class or gender or profession — he chose his victims at random, and came without warning. Repeatedly Joe saw the ghostly death trunk floating down the river, a fresh body lashed to it, ready to be fed to the river eels. It was true, what Nanor had told him, that he was addicted to their aquatic electricity, but he hadn’t mentioned the cost. To keep himself alive, others needed to die. Joe’s eyes filled with tears as he felt the grief of countless families, as he witnessed rainy funerals with empty coffins. From among the crowd of mourners came the woman again, his love, and she took his face in her hands. “Don’t be afraid now. Trust the river, it will bring you to me.” “He’s killing people, though. He’s feeding people to his river eels.” “There’s no shortage of darkness in this world, Joe. You don’t have to fight every battle. You’re just a boy.” “Soon I’ll be a man.” She smiled sadly. “I was worried you might say that.” Their conversation was suddenly interrupted when Nanor’s teeth sunk into his shoulder, abruptly ending his reverie. The river eels were screeching with delight, splashing in their pool, as he reeled forward and shook off his foe. They grappled then, clutching at one another in a macabre dance, their bare feet slipping on the wet stone. Lightning flashed, the light bouncing prismatic off the cavern walls. A few times Nanor’s teeth came chomping within inches of Joe’s face, but finally he hoisted the man over his head and hurled him against the wall with a mighty crash. Pebbles and then rocks began to bounce around them, the walls of their cave trembling, and then the Adams River came crashing in. Nanor surged through the racing water and they tussled amidst the waves, punching and grunting. The water rose around their stomachs, and then their chests, until finally they were being sucked into the early morning light. All around them the river eels cheered as they soared past, free from their dank confines. Joe nearly lost consciousness, but then his head broke the surface. Nanor was nowhere to be seen. Shortly later Joe dragged himself on to a rocky beach, crawling on hands and knees until he collapsed in the sand bleeding and exhausted. Just behind him came the logger’s corpse, which bumped along limp in the shallows. The sky was baby blue overhead, and for a long time he lay listening to the stoic creak of the trees. He was alive, on purpose, and suddenly his surroundings seemed that much more beautiful. He’d felt the seductive allure of death, looked her in Nanor’s ravaged face, and come out the other side. The woman from his dream was right; the future was coming whether he liked it or not, and the time had come for him to leave the Adams River behind. He was done with all its tragedy, all its pageantry and bizarre magic. He wanted to find his place amidst the rest of humanity, a place that didn’t include vampires or river eels. The woman had told him to listen to the river, and the river was telling him to run away as fast as he could. And so it came to pass that Joe lugged the dead logger’s body on to the beach and stripped it of its clothing. He pulled on a pair of patched blue jeans, stuffed them into a soggy pair of black boots, then donned the man’s red flannel shirt. He didn’t know it at the time, but this would be his outfit for the remainder of his days on this planet. Running his fingers through his hair and admiring his reflection in the river’s surface, he said a quick prayer to the power that had sustained him until this moment. “One day I will return, but until then I ask that you carry me to whatever future awaits. I am not afraid, nor will I ever be. Nanor was wrong; I’ve seen the darkness but still believe in the light.” The river didn’t answer with human words, but Joe understood them all the same. He stood and began making his way into the trees as behind him the morning came alive with the song of river eels.

Eddie Izzard:’ Everything I do in life is trying to get my mother back’
Transgender hero Eddie Izzard has done standup in French and German, run dozens of marathons, and is now in a period drama with Judi Dench. But, he uncovers, his can-do outlook has a doleful source
There was a literal turning point in Eddie Izzard’s lifelong pursuit of personal freedom. It came one afternoon in 1985 when he had gone out for the first time in a dress and heels and full makeup down Islington high street. He was 23 and “hes been” scheming- and shunning- that minute for just about as long as he had been able to remember. The turning point came as he was chased down the road by some teenage girls who had caught him changing back into his jeans in the public toilets and wanted to let him know he was weird. That pursuit intent when eventually, faced with the screamed doubt” Hey, why were you garmented as the status of women ?”, he chose simply to stop running and alter and justify himself.
He spun around to give an answer, but before he got many words out the girls had run in the opposite tack. The event educated him some things: that there was influence in encountering panic rather than scaping it; and that from then on he would never tell other parties define him. After that afternoon, he says, he is not simply felt he could face down the things that frightened him, he went chasing after them: street performing, standup slapstick, marathon ranging, political activism, improvising his stage show in different languages- all these things detected relatively easy after that original came to see you as what he calls” transvestite or transgender “.” You make, if I can do something that hard, but positive- maybe I can do anything .”
The ” anything” he has been doing very recently is to take on the challenges facing behaving opposite Judi Dench and Michael Gambon. In Stephen Frears’s interpretation of the real narrative of Queen Victoria’s late-life relationship with an Indian servant, Victoria& Abdul , Izzard plays a full-bearded, tweed-suited Bertie( afterward Edward VII ), reining in his comic instincts to occupy the cruelty and scheming of a son investigating his mother apparently making a clown of herself. Izzard has done spate of films before- “hes in” Ocean’s Twelve and Thirteen alongside George Clooney and Brad Pitt and the rest- but good-for-nothing that has required fairly this degree of costume drama suppression. He loved it.

He and Dench are old friends. She has been a regular at his stage shows and has been in the habit, for reasons forgotten, of sending a banana to his dressing room each opening night, with” Good fluke !” written on it. Checking her channel Victoria at close quarters was a daily masterclass. The movie was shoot partly at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight( the first time any cinema crew had been allowed inside by English Heritage) and the casting would make their whisker down in the nights. One day, Izzard echoes:” I was dancing with Judi to Ray Charles’s’ What’d I Say ‘. She felt like a young woman, a young teenage girl nearly. Judi has this amazing activated of vitality that marks all the way back to her youth .”
Watching the movie, you’re so ready to see Izzard slip into one of his wayward rambles of consciousness that for a while it seems odd that he stays on dialogue. Does it feel that road to him extremely?
” Not now ,” he says.” My early act as relevant actors wasn’t very good because I simply swopped all my comedy muscles off, and I didn’t know what to replace them with. I believe I have learned more how to merely’ be’ on cinema now. It is similar to knowing how to both journey a bicycle and drive a car. If you are in a vehicle you don’t want to lean sideways to turn a reces. You know the difference .”
Ever since he drivelled off institution and conned his direction into Pinewood Studios as a 15 -year-old and walked the film sets for a daytime, he has imagined himself relevant actors. The first thing he did when his slapstick eventually took off after years of trying and often is inadequate to construct parties laugh was to get himself a drama agent and see if he could prosecute a twinned busines. He has never been satisfied with exactly doing one thing, and it is suggested that determination to change has only just flourished. He’s 55, and because of his running- which peaked at 43 marathons in 57 periodsin the UK and 27 in 27 epoches in South africans for Sport Relief– he seems lean and almost alarmingly bright-eyed. We are talking in a hotel room in London, and he is garmented aggressively in” boy with eyeliner” mode. He works on the belief, he says, that human beings were never made to sit still or reconcile, but to target themselves in objection situations, and then work out how to cope.
” World conflict two is a good example ,” he proposes.” People went sagged behind enemy lines with no meaning of what they were going into. They had to learn to do a great deal under extreme pressure and on the move. And they testified we are able to. He has, of late, paused to reflect on the same reasons behind that motivation, first in a documentary film, Believe: the Eddie Izzard Story , made by his ex-lover and long-term collaborator Sarah Townsend, and then in an autobiography, Believe Me: A Memoir of Love, Death, and Jazz Chickens . The first two elements of that latter subtitle mostly led Izzard back to his mother, who died of cancer when he was six years old. Preparing the cinema, Townsend came to suggest that all Izzard’s invigorated digressive practices clique around this actuality, and in his journal, in opening assemblies too poignant to read easily, he expands on that thought.
” Toward the end of the movie, I started talking about my mother …” he recalls.” And I said something revelatory:’ I know why I’m doing all this ,’ I said.’ Everything I do in life is trying to get her back. I think if I do enough acts … that maybe she’ll come back .'” When he said those texts, he says, it felt like his subconscious speaking. The thought stood with him that” I do speculate I started performing and doing all sorts of big, crazy, ambitious circumstances because on some tier, on some childlike magical-thinking stage, I belief doing those stuffs might make her back .”
I wonder, having went those stuffs out into the public, nearly half a century on, if it has changed how he thinks about himself?
” I certainly seem I am in a better place ,” he says- but also it has given him a sense of his own strangeness.” There is that concept where people say wow about the marathons or whatever. And I kind of say wow very, because there are some things I did that, looking back, I don’t know how I did them. Running a double marathon on the last day in South Africa. It was 11 hours of not recreation. And about five minutes of euphoria. I’m not sure how I did that .”
One of the things about marathons- even if you are running, as he was some of the time in the UK, followed by an ice-cream van blaring the Chariots of Fire topic- is that there is an frightful lot of period for imagining. Does his brain ever pause for breath?
” I have a lucky situation ,” he says,” which is that I am interested in any question- how did we get here? all the beliefs. I can think about anything. For instance when I did the 43[ marathons] I operated past a clue saying’ the Battle of Naseby: 1 mile’ and I’m immediately off thinking about Cromwell and Fairfax, Prince Rupert maybe, and how this path I was guiding on would have been a racetrack back then and maybe the cavalry came down it, how did they get cannon round that deflect, all that, at every moment …”

Talking to Izzard, and watching him play-act, you feel he has a kind of the requirements of not ever wanting to miss any scrap of know-how. It’s partly, he proposes, why he has broadened his repertoire of doing standup in different languages in recent years.
” German has been the more difficult thus far ,” he says. He is doing Arabic next, planning a show in the Yemen( he was born in Aden, where “his fathers” worked for a day for BP) to draw attention to the brutal civil conflict there, and after that, Mandarin Chinese. As he excuses this, blithely, I’m prompted both sets of channels in his journal where he writes about the strategies he developed to overcome severe dyslexia as a child, and his uneasy rapport with his late stepmother, Kate. The antithesis of performing as a younger soldier for the remembering of his mother was a refusal to be limited by Kate’s efforts to control him. She missed him to be an controller because he was good with quantities, if not with learning. He recalls her once telling him:” You’ve got to understand that you are a cog in the machine. As soon as you understand that, they are able to fit in and get on with life .” You can only imagine how that was downed. Does he ever think he will become more accept of limits?
” I have a very strong sense that we are only on this planet for a short segment of epoch ,” he says.” And that is only changing. Religious parties might think it goes on after extinction. My concern is that if that is the case it would be nice if exactly one person came back and make us know it was all fine, all corroborated. Of all the billions of people who have died, if just one of them could come through the cloud and say, you know,’ It’s me Jeanine, it’s brilliant, there’s a really good spa ‘, that would be great .” He interrupts.” Although what if heaven was merely like three-star, OK-ish. You know,’ Some of the taps don’t work …'”
He places his success down not to any particular expertise, but to his being” brilliantly digesting. Some parties are perhaps brilliantly fascinating. But I have the opposite gift .” That, and staman, and that inexhaustible curiosity about the world.
For a BBC series about genealogy he went to Africa to draw the percentage of his genetic make-up that was Neanderthal. It fortified his sense that there was nothing new under the sun, that people has all along been the same.” We never think of cavemen being resentful of the neighbours with the very best cave, but no doubt they were ,” he says.

Talk of politics is a reminder of Izzard’s involvements in last year’s referendum expedition, in which he tried to use its own experience of doing comedy in French and German and Spanish as an example of how Europe might be a place where you could share culture, rather than be defensive about it. In those fevered weeks, his arguments were sometimes made to look naive; the Mail and the rest ribbed him after an awkward encounter with Nigel Farage on Question Time .
He admits that he is sometimes still learning in politics, but is unrepentant about his efforts to try to advance a justification that he has been engaged in as a musician for a long while.
” Running and disguising from Europe cannot be the way forward for us ,” he says.” The intuition that Britain can go back to 1970 and it will still be all the same merely can’t be an option .”
Does he think there is still hope for Remainers?
” It seems to me beings are always capable of being either brave and curious or frightening and suspicious. If you track humanity the whole way through, the periods of success for civilisation are those periods where we have been brave and strange .”
There is plenty of fear and distrust in the world though. How does he think it “il be going”?
” I don’t know. If you look at the 1930 s there are obviously clear examples of how individuals can twisting this type of suspicions and twist them, and then you get what historians usually call mass-murdering fuckheads in influence .”
He has long has spoken of looking to run as a Labour MP in the next election. Is that still the suit?
” Yes, the strategy was always to run in 2020, though Theresa May has changed that with her failed supremacy grab. So now it’s the first general election after 2020.”
He will too employ himself forwards for Labour’s national executive committee at the party powwow this year. He didn’t make it last period, though he got 70,000 referendums. And if and when he has become a MP, he will give up playing and performing?
” I would. It’s like Glenda Jackson; she gave up acting for 25 times to concentrate on it, then she changes up back as King Lear .”

I wonder if another ambition, to eventually have children, still exerts?
” I always said teenagers in my 50 s. But I too ever felt that I had to do concepts firstly. Get this material done. But yes, I haven’t given up on that .”
For someone who was coped an early assignment about the fragility of life, his long-term strategy dins strange. Does he feel that negation?
” I think we should all choose a year we would like to live to, and do everything we can to make that the project works. I mean it could all go wrong at any point, patently. But we also know that if we don’t get malady or get hit by a bus we are able ourselves by drinking enough sea and maintaining as fit as you were when you were a kid. As we get older and we get a bit creaky we take that as a signed to stop doing trash. My sense is we should promoted through creaky. I was seeming a little bit sluggish recently, about a month ago, I considered right, I’ll do seven marathons in seven days. And off I disappear. The first four were a little bit rubbish, but you push on through that .”
He must have good joints?
” I mutilated my knee up a while ago, trying to jumping over a barrier ,” he says.” But it healed up, and now it complains only when I don’t use it enough .”
Is there some genetic cause for his power?
” Dad adored football, played until his late 30 s. I don’t know about Mum. She liked singing and humor and Flanders and Swann but I’m not sure about play .”
I discover his voice interrupt just slightly. Izzard still can’t really talking here his mother easily, at least not in an interview. In his volume he describes how in the immediate consequence of her fatality he and his dad and two brothers exclaimed together for half an hour and then stopped in case they went on for ever. I felt, why not give it to the museum in Bexhill? I guessed there might be spate of prototype railway enthusiasts in Bexhill, and they rebuilt this thing, it’s kind of a collector’s item. They are now going to build another one, a Christmas version. We had a grand opening and Dad came down to see it .”
He likes the facts of the case that he is in a position to prepare these kinds of things happen. Is he happier now than ever?
” I always missed the various kinds of profile that you can leverage to do the things you require ,” he says.” There is no path into it. You have to work out how you get there- over the wall, or tunnel your route in. I always envisaged doing the same occasion was actually going backwards. And if “youre starting” saying’ Hi, I like chicken’ on some advert, you know you have probably reached that degree .”
You hesitate a little to ask him what he is working on next, but I do anyway.
” I’ve written my first cinema ,” he says.” It is called Six Minutes to Midnight , set in the summer of 1939. I’m developing a show in French in Paris. This December I am going to be on a ship, exactly below Notre Dame, doing two substantiates nightly. What else? I’m not a good reader but I always wanted to read all of Dickens, so I have found someone who will let me speak them as audiobooks- I have done a third of Great Expectations and it took four epoches. So: 12 eras. And then there is the premiere of Victoria& Abdul for which Dad is coming up from Bexhill to spend his 89 th birthday with Judi Dench …”
Out of all the things he has done, I expect, of what is he proudest?
” Mostly I hope I have done things that help other people to do them ,” he says.” That was the thing with coming out as transgender, and it was the same thought doing the marathons, or memorizing the languages. I hope beings might recollect, well if that jackas can do it, why can’t I? I mean, I’m just some guy, right. Nothing special ?”
I’m not quite convinced.
