Don't call it strange if a Techno-Organic Caterpillar had a bad dream

So, this is based on this post from my old account.

Looks like little Haym Caterpillar had a little bad dream, which has gotten attention from Neon J. The Cyborg Mothman, and he comforts his innocent son, telling him that it is just a bad dream. And yes, the 1010 Caterpillars are here during the situation, they are just short. And this is where we see Haym's Electric Cuteness for the first time, and it is not going to be the last after his metamorphosis era.

Not sure if this has been brought up before, but I don’t think that there’s that significant of a secret behind the mural man. LIke? Apparently the political figures of Vinyl City are determined not by public voting (alone) or running for candidacy, but through the Lights Up competition for a combination of 1) completing the arena, 2) ‘lighting up’ the stage as the competition implies, and 3) passing the final vote from the NSRtists and the Head. If there was only 5 musicians and a head with NO vacancies, why would any of the Charters vote ‘yes’ to the contestant/s if there’s a risk in getting replaced?

I would think that the mural man filled in that 6th artist slot present even on DJ Subatomic Supernova’s satellite, and I suppose the mystery then would be if their absence was either through retiring, quitting or simply the end of their term as a Charter. Like, instead of an election season or whatever, Vinyl City holds Lights Up Auditions during a set period during that 6th Charter’s crossover or something; on the satellite again, it’s not as if we see the mural man’s name in 6th (we see Bunk Bed Junction’s), maybe they’re already gone or are archiving stuff from their district. Does Tatiana temporarily hold ‘charter’ to the district? Does she hold the platinum disc until a new position is filled? Is Festival Plaza that district that once had mural man as a Charter? Do you think with the Rock Revolution and the subsequent approval of indie bands that the position was left empty or even completely abolished?

Stupid question that doesn’t need to be answered.

Is the way Vinyl City is set up a sort of gerrymandering??? Like each district is a ring because the city can rotate. But doesn’t that kind of manipulate the population?

Cast Tech would be the smallest ring while Dream Fever is the biggest. So, if things work on population or at least size, then Dream Fever has so much more power than the rest of the districts.

I guess it isn’t total gerrymandering considering all districts belong to one political party: EDM. And the boundaries aren’t really being forcibly manipulated, more so they are a byproduct of how the city was built to rotate. But it still makes me wonder how the actual voting system is like in Vinyl City considering Tatiana does talk about the people having power to chose who is in charge.

That one time Burning Constellation went to jail

Yes you read the title right, the rock band did get arrested after they did something extremely stupid. 

How did this happen? 

Well it all started when Rock Haven Estate was undergoing some renovations and the band couldn’t really practice as they usually did, so they decided to go to the Festival Plaza. It was a relatively normal time at first as the band got to meet some fans, but they also really needed to practice since they would be performing a concert in the next 2 weeks and it was also a really big concert too.

While trying a good place to practice, Mason, the band’s lead singer and very dumb, very polite himbo had the idea of playing right in front of the Grand Qwasa and also charge it so that Vinyl City could get some extra power. Sounds like a very great plan, what could possibly go wrong?

The band got in front of the Grand Qwasa and started practicing, their music soon getting into performance mode as a crowd started to gather and cheer them on. While they played their music began to charge the Grand Qwasa, and things were going great. 

However the band failed to consider one small issue that they overlooked when their original plan was formulated. Their instruments were powerful. Very powerful.

The next thing everyone knew, the Grand Qwasa exploded and it caused not only what felt like an earthquake, but also caused a 5 second blackout in the entirety of Vinyl City before the emergency power kicked in. It took Burning Constellation a minute to process what just happened before the realization kicked in, followed by a collective “OH SHIT-”

Sonya Fyra, the band’s drummer and literal being of chaos, spotted her motorcycle parked nearby and quickly gathered her bandmates (gathered I mean literally snatched all of them at the same time-) before they all got on her motorcycle and sped away from the scene. Thankfully she did that right before the cops showed up and put two and two together that the rock band had caused this incident. 

And that’s when the chase started.

The police cars sirens were heard throughout Vinyl City as the band tried to get away from them. Luckily Sonya was very skilled at driving and proceeded to evade the police and traffic for 2 whole hours. As this was happening, the news outlets got wind of what was happening and soon enough the whole police chase was being live-streamed on every channel and on online platforms where everyone in Vinyl City was watching this all go down. 

As for the band, they were all having the greatest time of their lives as they held on to Sonya. Mason was cheering as Sonya performed some very cool but also dangerous stunts on the motorcycle such as doing a wheelie, flying over ramps, and even drifting on curves. Orion had her arms wrapped around her girlfriend and gently felt her abs like the lesbian she was. Danny being the only relatively normal person in the group was really worried about what was happening, but he was holding onto Mason so that calmed him down a bit. 

However things did come to an end when a police sniper shot at the motorcycle, and directly hit the back tire which exploded on impact. Everyone watching the chase witnessed as the band members were sent flying due to the tire explosion, and all landed on the ground as the police completely surrounded them. Thankfully no one was seriously injured, but the band members were all arrested and hauled off to the Vinyl City jail as everyone on TV watched. 

The band thought this was the most fun they ever had and didn’t mind getting arrested. Orion made the phone call to one of the band’s friends at Rock Haven so they could be bailed out, but little did they know that someone else had come to the jail and bailed out the band. 

It was when that they saw Titanium present and learned that she bailed them out that the band realized they were in big trouble as Titanium was really pissed off. 

Despite being at a “loss for words” Titanium yelled at the band for 30 minutes on how reckless they had been. The band had been lectured before by Titanium in the past so it was nothing new to them, but the drama would only continues as the respective parents of the band members showed up after Titanium finished chewing them out. 

Mayday (Mason’s mom), Tatiana (Sonya and Titanium’s mother), and Kliff (Orion’s dad) had arrived, and the band all looked at each other, knowing they fucked up big time as they all said to one another “It’s been a pleasure knowing you guys.”

Since Danny was an orphan he wasn’t as affected but could only watch in horror as his bandmates were almost brutally murdered by their parents (not literally but they got the biggest ass whooping off their lifetime). The band was then grounded for a whole week and were made to do community service as punishment for what they did. 

But the story doesn’t end there.

A few weeks later after the whole incident, Burning Constellation dropped their newest album: “Going to Prison” which became an instant hit. You can imagine the reactions of everyone outside of the band’s fans when this album came out-

Let's talk about Yinu's boss fight...

Yinu is the third NSR artist we face in No Straight Roads, alongside her mother who I'll refer to as Mama. Yinu is my 3rd favorite NSR artist not only for her character but the fact she plays neoclassical music! There's a really interesting connection I want to make later but without further ado let's talk about Yinu.

"I'll show you why they call me the Golden Maestro of Vinyl City!"

Yinu's battle goes like most of the others......except you don't fight her...you fight her mother. Mama will appear after you break the gate and will hold Yinu out of harms way, shielding her when you get rid of all the strings. Mama functions as the main obstacle you have to get through to get to Yinu. She will keep Yinu away from you for the entire battle, focused on mainly keeping Yinu performing.

She starts out as simply being behind the curtain, then in the second phase she grows and lifts up the stage into the air, and finally she uses herself as a sort of cage. You defeat her but it isn't over you're interrupted by Yinu who is angry at EVERYONE and furiously plays her piano.

You finally reach her and we hear something audibly break. The cutscene plays and we see everyone falling. No one is hurt in the fall but.......

Mayday and Zuke broke Yinu's piano.

Yinu plays neoclassical music which consists of piano, strings, and wind instruments. I absolutely love Yinu's theme not only because I love classical music myself but because it's so melodic and really evokes emotion. The rock version, while not my favorite, is also really good at using guitars and drums to replace the strings and winds.

One element I love is that the furious piano playing towards the end of the song stays in the rock version as well. It's such a nice touch to add to keep in the same in every version of Yinu's music. When I hear hear theme music I can imagine her enjoying herself, playing her piano for her fans but also for herself and her mother. I hear passion when listening to Yinu's theme which says a lot than having to express it with more words.

The next time you listen to her theme I want you to really listen and see what your mind comes up with when listening to it.

B2J's overthrowing Yinu's concert reminded me of the rise of popularity for rock in the 1950's and it subsequently becoming mainstream in the 20th century.

With popular music such as rock, jazz, and the blues becoming so popular classical music was forgotten about and had to find its own niche radio stations. Even today any type of classical music is basically forgotten or isn't looked as fondly upon as pop or rock music.

When B2J destroyed Yinu's piano this thought solidified itself as them getting rid of classical music, quite literally drowning Yinu out until you're trying to reach her. May and Zuke got rid of Yinu's neoclassical music in her district.

They put down a music genre just so rock can become popular again.

Conclusion is Yinu is an S-tier boss fight and she has so much untapped story that I didn't go over.

Crossposting stuff from my twitter to my tumblr and vice versa, because I've finally got half the mind to do it

I was briefly into No Straight Roads the Game at the time and these are based off of existing ocs I have lol

Thoughts & lore I had at the time preserved under the cut for posterity

These are all based on existing ocs I have that I modified to sorta "fit" NSR's Lore and Feel. Originally I was more intent on imitating the style of NSR, but it went away more and more when I originally sketched all of them lmao (I colored and cleaned up the actual sketches about a year apart from when they where first sketched).

The overall aesthetic of each character was loosely based off different punk/rock to adjacent genres with indeterminant success. I think I imagined at the time if they were to function gameplay wise, Scratch, Temp, and Rhythm would actually end up being Mayday's allies, with Scratch's jazz club being an unlockable area in the game for extra content.

So the main idea was that The Lonely Hearts Club was the original band started by the four of them, who met up in Scratch's jazz club originally and became friends. The band would eventually fade into obscurity as Ryme started a solo career during the events of NSR as EDM musician, SNOW QUEEN, under the NSR label (I forgot what exact genre it would've been). The remaining three members of the band would continue the jazz/music club and still frequently meet up, inviting Ryme as well (although he typically was a no-show due to his career obligations). Eventually they would become concerned for Ryme, who disappeared after the release of their first album, and travel to the semi-abandoned district of Vinyl City where he was based to find him, meeting Mayday and Zuke along the way. Basically Ryme was kind of like a secret boss you would have to beat to unlock the jazz club?

The "Snow Queen" epithet alludes to the theme of the boss, which was a sense of perfectionism and the pressure of popularity and criticism leading to a creative block/burnout and eventual self-isolation and depression. The other members of Lonely Hearts Club would have been npc allies in the fight, modifying stage conditions during it. Fun fact: their color schemes are based off the fire diamond. Additionally, the snake (while it has symbolic significance of like, crushing pressure) is also the speaker/microphone and is referential to Scratch. Scratch and Ryme are implied to be in a romantic relationship with each other :)

If you've read this far thanks for reading lmao. It's a fun exercise to think of how this kind of thing would legitimately fit into other projects, as a part of concepting ideas and such haha
