The longer they played, the better she understood it. Encirclement. The goal of the game was in its name. Encirclement. So similar to Regicide, but with a completely different goal. Regicide was war. Encirclement was negotiation. A tight-smiled back and forth as two parties tried to gain as much ground as they could.

Or a steady strangulation where it is not clear who killed who until the final count is made.

She’s a few eyes behind. Hers and Calligos Winterscale’s pieces had made a zigzagging dance across the board, all the way to the edge of it. To the edge of a world too small to contain multiple masters.

She leans back in her chair, “Pass.”

Calligos starts plucking her white pieces off the board.

“You said you would give it some thought. Have you?”

She shuts her eyes and nods. Aylin doesn’t need to open her eyes to know he’s looking at her. Jaw tight. Waiting for her next words.

“I accept.”

“Then we-”

“On one condition.” She raises a hand. Opens her eyes. Exhales.

Calligos raises an eyebrow.

“I want it to be me.” Aylin taps her fingernails on the arm of her chair. A nervous habit. “When the time comes, I want it to be me. I’ll be the last thing the Lord Inquisitor sees before I make him choke on his ambitions.”

A predatory grin spreads across Calligos’ face, “Seems we’ll see you live long enough not to be a new blood after all.”

so i've submitted a fair number of songs to haveyouheardthisband and i swear there's always some bitch in the tags complaining "why did you submit x? y is a much better song" and every time i want to shake them like the name of the blog is HAVE YOU HEARD THIS BAND not fuckin Which Is This Band's Best Song, i am trying to submit bands' well-known songs so that people can vote accurately on the poll. i can't tell you how many times i've clicked "haven't even heard of them" on a band i HAVE heard bc there was no example song or someone submitted an example that was not their most famous song. so i try to submit what i think is their best-known song, maybe it's the one with the most spotify streams or the one that was used as an OST or something, even if i personally don't think it was their best. "y is a better song than x" I DON'T CARE THAT'S NOT THE POINT the point is that people are going to recognize x BUT NOT y and that could mean the difference between them voting "yes" and "haven't even heard of them" on the poll
