Septendecim tabernae in via praesto sunt» Se ci fosse stata un'app di navigazione, ai tempi dell’Impero romano, probabilmente avrebbe dato simili istruzioni per guidarci in un avventuroso viaggio.

In realtà un'applicazione di navigazione per l'Europa del secondo secolo dopo Cristo esiste davvero, ed è assolutamente affascinante. Si chiama ORBIS, ed è realizzata dalla Stanford University: https://orbis.stanford.edu/

ORBIS consente di stimare i costi, sia di tempo sia finanziari, dei viaggi e dei trasporti romani. Simulando il movimento lungo le principali rotte della rete stradale imperiale, i maggiori fiumi navigabili e centinaia di rotte marittime nel Mediterraneo, nel Mar Nero e nell'Atlantico costiero, questo modello interattivo calcola la durata e il costo di un viaggio nel secondo secolo dopo Cristo, tenendo conto anche delle variazioni stagionali e delle correnti marine.

Se siete curiosi di sapere quanto tempo ci voleva e quanto costava spostarsi nell'Europa dell'Impero Romano, o siete docenti in cerca di qualche sito Internet interessante ed educativo per i vostri allievi, o magari siete scrittori o autori in cerca di realismo per il vostro racconto storico, potete consultare questo sito, che simula le percorrenze lungo le vie di comunicazioni terrestri, fluviali e marittime principali con un modello interattivo, tenendo conto anche delle variazioni stagionali e delle correnti marine.

Cliccando sul pulsante Start del sito compare una mappa che, esattamente come Google Maps, permette di scegliere punto di partenza, destinazione. Sono offerte tre opzioni di viaggio: più veloce, più economico, più breve. Per ciascuna si può scegliere il mezzo di trasporto: a piedi, a dorso di mulo, su un carro.
