The blue train. The train journey from Kandy to Ella is today, a rite of passage for any traveler who visits Sri Lanka. As it chugs along on its seven-hour-long journey across paddy fields and through tunnels, you get a door-side view of the high hills and lush green tea plantations. It wasn’t always so though. It was built when the British transported tea from the hills of Kandy to the capital. What initially started as a 50 odd km rail line in 1864, has, today, expanded to over 1,500 km that runs through hills, along the coasts, and through villages across the country. There is something magical, and risky about hanging out of a moving train. It felt refreshing, as every turn along the journey was an opportunity to experience and appreciate an ever-changing landscape. Lush green paddy fields in small towns gave way to high hills with trees that towered even higher. As the train slowly snakes its way uphill and takes yet another turn, views of misty covered hilltops and stations would greet us, while tea pickers would stop work in the tea plantations, for just a few moments, to smile and wave back at delirious passengers trying to capture their photograph. Now, if this isn’t a journey that is pure unadulterated joy, then what is. _________________________________________ @nofixedaddrs #nofixedaddrs _________________________________________ So Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 #SoSriLanka #VisitSriLanka _________________________________________ ………. ……... …….. ……. …… ….. …. … .. . #ellatrain #ellasrilanka #outsidethetrain #trainphotography #trains #travelbytrain #knowSL #mustbeSriLanka #exploreSriLanka #travelsrilanka #lovesrilanka #amazingsrilanka #srilankadiaries #srilankatourism #feelsrilanka #srilankatravel #srilankatoday #srilankadaily #slbloggers #thisissrilanka #igersella #igerssrilanka #ig_srilanka (at Sri Lanka) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSJuJ_JMyGc/?utm_medium=tumblr

The track. Back in the old days, it used to be a meter-gauge track, with steam engines pulling the carriages with a huff and a puff. And then, it lay disused for many years, until it was converted to a broad gauge. Today, it is diesel engines that pull carriages on these tracks. However, there is still a charm about Kabaka Puttur railway station that evokes fond memories of childhood, and evening walks to try and see off the train as it made its slow journey from Puttur to Mangalore. Some evenings, a walk would be for miles and hours, along the track, constantly looking over our shoulders and seeing far into the distance to make sure there is no train chugging towards us. Of course, there wasn’t. But just the act of peering behind or ahead was enough to give us cheap thrills. On days when we were feeling a little brave, we would place our ears on the track, to try and feel the rumble when we knew a train was only a few miles away. Am not sure whether it was the act of placing our ears on the track or the passing of the train that gave us a bigger kick. And, sometimes, when a train did pass us by on our evening walks along the track, we would take out a ten paise aluminum coin from our pockets, and gingerly place it on the track and wait for the train to roll over it. That squashed coin would then go into our coin collection, worthless, but still a prized piece in the collection. Sigh! _________________________________________ @nofixedaddrs #nofixedaddrs _________________________________________ Incredible India 🇮🇳 #IncredibleIndia #KarnatakaTourism #NammaKarnataka #onestatemanyworlds _________________________________________ ………. ……... …….. ……. …… ….. …. … .. . #kabakaputtur #outsidethetrain #trainphotography #trains #travelbytrain #traintravel #travelbytrain #slowtravel #railway #railwayphotography #railways_of_our_world #train #trainspotting #travelbytrain #trains_worldwide #railfans #railfan #traindaily #KarnatakaDiaries #TravelKarnataka #explorekarnataka #visitkarnataka #namma_photographers #nammakarnatakaphotographers #india_clicks (at Kabaka Puttur Railway Station) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMgxAQZsoPx/?igshid=4cvt70nbqspf

The kid What's it about train journeys that brings out the little kid in me. Hours spent watching from a window or door of a moving train, as scene after scene unfold. Striking up conversations with complete strangers as they get in at different stations, heading to places near and far, asking for and giving back nothing more than each other's company for the duration of that journey. Except perhaps a few snacks and drinks that are shared and relished down to the last bite and sip. What's it about train journeys that lets the mind be at peace. Perhaps knowing that you will eventually arrive at your destination, but choose to revel in the moment, here and now. Where thoughts are plenty, but just like the scenes that go by, each of them fleeting. What's it about train journeys that brings back memories. New places discovered. New food sampled. New friendships forged. When images stick in your head long after miles have passed, and you keep repeating conversations that you have had, many months and years later. Whatever those memories, whatever those moments, it always brings a smile to my face. And then, I sit back, look out of the window, and think and wonder, when did I ever really grow up? _________________________________________ So Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 #SoSriLanka #VisitSriLanka @destination_srilanka _________________________________________ @nofixedaddrs #nofixedaddrs _________________________________________ ………. ……... …….. ……. …… ….. …. … .. . #ellatrain #ellasrilanka #outsidethetrain #ig_global_people #humanity_shots #ig_respect #people_infinity #peoplearoundtheworld #peopleportraits #peopleinfinity #people_and_world #ig_energy_people #peoplelife #people_world #humanphotography #human_streetphoto #trainphotography #trains #travelbytrain #lonelyplanet #beautifuldestinations #passionpassport #roamtheplanet #exploremore #traveldeeper #welivetoexplore #neverstopexploring (at Nuwara Eliya) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7N3skuAxp3/?igshid=16egggt81dlo
