#City23 Update - End of January: Nottingham and Cape Crescent
Crossposted to Cohost
I've written about my #City23 projects here and on Cohost. You can check out my last post.
I took a weeklong break due to a death in the family, so this is the my end-of-January post.
Nottingham
My previous posts introduced the Three-Foxes Inn, which I later decided was near the Bar Gate and Chapel Bar area. The gate heads toward Derby and the forests and hills to the Northwest. The Three Foxes is owned by Madame Jarry and two of her three sons. I added an alewife who makes the inn's brews, couple of other residents: Colman who murders strangers in order sustain his wife's life, Ruhl the Baker who does favors for the sheriff in order to protect his daughter (a sheriff's hostage), and the informal mendicants Earnmund and Mindred, clairvoyants and necromancers who exchange prophecies for money and live on the estate of a local priory.
I started last week by adding a Gruffin's Candle Shop to the Chapel Bar area, adding three NPCs who work there: - Gruffin of Clun, sometimes called "Old Clun," the owner, an apparently immortal wax magician who makes candles, spell candles, and magical waxen masks and figures. - Vel, his oldest apprentice, a young man who rarely speaks, but can be heard singing at night as he practices his magic. - Yvaine, his younger apprentice, an escaped aristocrat who disdains the notion of gender and has a talent for burglary.
I've also gone back to the Three Foxes and added a few details: - A random list of customers, including a shy trans tough, an outgoing trans harper, a prostitute, a farmer who's having prophetic dreams, a former Templar, and a German scholar-turned-Nottingham-pastrymaker. - An aristocrat living secretly as Azela's apprentice alewife.
Finally, I've added Godfrey Draper (secretly an agent of the sheriff): a brutish lout of a guard who's playing the fool to lure people into becoming careless about their support of their forest outlaw heroes.
Cape Crescent
This week in Cape Crescent, I've focused on the Lunar Lounge, a queer nightclub near the shore, popular with locals and tourists alike. - Drag Duo and owners Trent Keith (Pearl Dyver in drag) and Sylvia Herrera (Manor Bourne in drag) are also member of a local wolf pack who are concerned about the designer drugs that the Ghost Bay Foundation seems to be introducing to the town's nightlife. - Immortal bartender Griffin Declan who shifts his identity (and sometimes his face) every decades or two. - Go-go dancer Chance Reyes who has an innate (and unwanted) talent for necromancy. - Barback Kevin Phillips, who ran away from home and found a strange book that contains the spirit of Tarlton Caine's own runaway claivoyant son (who doesn't want his dad). - Several customers you might meet on the dance floor, including Dr. Jenna Caine (Tarlton Caine's oldest child and mentee), an out-of-work actor, a new resident who caught their ex-husband cheating and came to Cape Crescent for a new life, a Ghost Bay Foundation tech writer, the managing editor of the local paper, and a drug-dealer.
Reading
This week I also started working my way through some classic city-focused adventures and supplements from games of yore. Right now, it's Flying Buffalo's CityBook I: Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker.
Coming Up
In Nottingham, I think it's time to shift and get into the sprawl of Nottingham Castle. Over in Cape Crescent, I'll figure out whether the best thing to start next is exploring Tarlton Caine's organization or the Ghost Bay Foundation's off-shore HQ.

A little grammar
Italian formation of feminine nouns can be a bit tricky, but it's nothing impossible to learn and in the end it comes down to practise and listening to others speak. To avoid a long grammatical rant, this won't be treating plural nouns and the nouns will be divided into 2 main categories, the second of which is the most complicated.
Nomi di genere fisso - Nouns with fixed gender
The easiest of the two, nouns with fixed gender are always inanimate and they're either masculine or feminine. This rule is key when you encounter certain couples of nouns which have a false gender variation. Among these, the most common ones are:
il pianto - la pianta | the crying - the plant
il colpo - la colpa | the hit - the blame
il caso - la casa | the coincidence/affair - the house
but also some homophones like:
il lama - la lama | the llama - the blade
il fronte - la fronte | the front - the forehead
Esseri viventi - Living beings
This is the most complicated part as there are several rules that further divide the nouns in other categories. Here they'll be divided in 4 categories: nomi mobili, nomi indipendenti, nomi ambigenere, and nomi promiscui (o di genere promiscuo).
1. Nomi mobili - Mobile nouns This nouns keep the same root but change their ending. Noun endings in -o or -e are replaced by -a in the feminine, unless the noun is refers to a job or a title, then usually it's replaced by -essa.
The masculine form is still preferred when talking about jobs and titles that women have been able to obtain only recently (e.g. avvocato, architetto, ministro, sindaco, etc), while the feminine is used for jobs and titles they have been able to do for a long time (e.g. sarta, professoressa, senatrice, infermiera).
2. Nomi indipendenti - Independent nouns These nouns have completely different forms in the masculine and feminine form. Examples of this are padre-madre, fratello-sorella, montone-pecora, etc. and there are no rules so you ought to study them by heart.
3. Nomi ambigenere - Common gender nouns Certain nouns ending in -e and in -a, and nouns ending in -ante, -ista, -cida and -iatra don't change between masculine and feminine. The only way to distinguish the gender is by the associated article and/or adjective. Examples of this are:
il/la nipote | grandchild/nibling
il/la collega | colleague
un/un'artista | an artist
un/un'omicida | a murderer
il/la pediatra | pediatrician
4. Nomi di genere promiscuo - Promiscuous gender These are mostly animals (with the notable exception of gatto/gatto, cane*, lupo/lupa, leone/leonessa, gallo/gallina) and they have only one gender and only one article to refer to both sexes. To specify an animal's gender "maschio/femmina" is added after the noun or the formation "il maschio/la femmina di [animale]" For example:
la tigre (maschio/femmina) | the tiger/tigress
il leopardo (maschio/femmina) | the leopard
il masschio/la femmina della rondine
il medico | the doctor
la spia | the spy
la guida | the guide
la guardia | the guard

- mind the upholstery  |  tommy/alfie, modern au for @boundinshallows’ sholomons prompt fest 2019
Tommy can be very particular. Not overly perceptive, though.
“I don’t see your name on it, mate,” Alfie said with a smile that curled his fat mouth up at the corners like they were in Wonderland and Tommy immediately felt a surge of schadenfreude, which was the sole reason he didn’t hate Alfie entirely because schadenfreude was pretty much his favourite emotion of all time.
Leaning down -- close enough to smell the cardamom-cinnamon scent of Alfie’s chai in its paper cup with his name scrawled on it, bloody irresponsible, he didn’t even bring a reusable one -- Tommy tapped one finger on the arm of the chintz-upholstered armchair. Alfie stared serenely up at him.
Tommy grabbed Alfie’s free hand and shoved his fingertips along the side of the armrest, where there resided a raised set of letters done in thick embroidery. “That’s my name,” he announced, triumph somewhat dimmed by Alfie’s thoughtful expression as he felt the letters out and didn’t bother to look.
“I do apologize, then, Quanny--”
“Fucking Esme never did take to cursive properly, it’s Tommy--”
“--but there was no reason I’d know that, was there?” Alfie nodded at the deep blue leather armchair that sat nearby. “Why don’t you try that one? I’m already good and set right where I am, and that one’s free. You know what they say about possession and the law, yeah?”
“That one doesn’t have my name on it,” Tommy said, and Ada at that moment bawled from the counter, “TOMMIEEEEEE!” as if he wouldn’t be able to hear her above the smooth world beats wafting from the speakers. Tommy held up a finger. “To be continued,” he said, and went to fetch his coffee in its environmentally correct metal cylindrical cup that netted him a sixty-cent discount when his sister or brother-in-law weren’t barista-ing (Ada and Ben, so long as he stuck to drip or teabags, let him drink for free, and Tommy liked free better than he liked latte).
“Why are you harassing Alfie Solomons?” Ada hissed, grabbing Tommy’s sleeve and making him slop dark roast onto the counter. They both made the same frustrated noise, Ada grabbed a rag and dropped it, and Tommy wiped and mopped as she continued, “He’s a brilliant tipper and he runs a brillianter bakery and Ben and me want to get him to partner with us so we can cross-promote our merchandise!”
“Ben and you need to stop coming up with sales euphemisms for your kinky bedroom games,” Tommy said, wiping the bottom of his cup as he weathered Ada’s responding dirty look.
“Honestly, Tommy,” she said, her tone turning a bit wheedling as she took his cup from him and topped it back up, “this could be really big for us. If he stocks our chai and tea and the ginger hot chocolate at his shop we’ll be set. Go make up with him.”
“Make up with him?” Tommy was affronted. “Why am I always the one in the wrong? He keeps sitting in my chair! This isn’t the first time I’ve seen him! And he never moves, even though I--”
“You what? You’ve asked him to move before?”
“No! No. Ada, come on, I was brought up same as you, ay? To be polite even when somebody’s being a bit of a plum.” Tommy cast a narrow-eyed glare at Alfie, who had the nerve to be visibly enjoying his chai, moustache bristling over the plastic cup-lid as he thumbed gracefully against his mobile. “All I’ve done is sit across from him, uncomfortably, on the edge of my seat, and indicate with my eyes that I was waiting for that chair and would prefer it if he moved.”
Ada gave him a flat, rather tired look, and blinked heavily. “You’ve been coming into the shop on multiple occasions, sitting across from him, and eyeballing him. This is what you’re telling me.” She sighed as Tommy gave a yes, and? sort of shrug, and handed him back his cup. “You’re hopeless. Go. Do what you want.”
Tommy capped his coffee and returned to the armchair area in a huff. Sometimes he had no idea what his sister was thinking. “All right,” he said to Alfie who apparently was a genius pastrymaker and held the buttery key to his sister and brother-in-law’s future success, “time to shift it. I want my chair. You can have the butch one.”
Alfie looked up at him, all round blue-grey eyes and round lips. “The butch one!” he repeated, gesturing at the leather chair with his phone. “Is that why you want this one? Because it makes you feel pretty?” Tommy scowled horrendously and Alfie tutted, giving his head a disappointed shake. “Narrow-mindedness, I call it,” Alfie said sorrowfully. “Assumption of the worst sort. What makes you think, Quanny--”
“Tommy.”
“--that I don’t also like to feel pretty? Hrrmm? Because I’ll have you know, with the right shade of lippie I look absolutely--”
He wasn’t able to expound any further on lip colour, because with a click of the tongue that was part resolute and part resigned, Tommy set himself in Alfie’s lap. Forcing Alfie to hold both his phone and his chai out of the way, his round eyes going even rounder and a little bit darker as Tommy sprawled his legs out to stabilize himself.
“Finally got around to actually making a move instead of staring at me every time I came in, eh?” Alfie said, bringing his wrist to rest against Tommy’s knee, turning off his mobile. “If that’s your usual method of flirting, darling, you’re in need of a refresher course.”
“I’m in need of having my head examined,” Tommy said. But then he rested his head against Alfie’s shoulder, nose brushing the other man’s collar, and Alfie shifted to bring him in closer and didn’t seem to mind at all. “You should be drinking out of a reusable cup,” Tommy remarked, because he couldn’t help himself even when somebody was being sweet to him. Alfie made a rumbling noise in his chest.
“But then you wouldn’t find out my name.” He held up his paper cup, and Tommy turned it and squinted at the black squiggle of handwritten name on it.
“I suppose you’re right,” Tommy said, and lifted his head with the faintest of smiles. “Lovely to meet you, Olgia.”
“Bloody cheek,” Alfie said, but by then Tommy was kissing him and finding his thoughts, with each taste of cardamom and cinnamon, straying to some cross-promotion of his own.

Knead?
oh boy. okay. here’s some deep lore. back in my misspent middle-school-to-early-high-school years, I was a county champion baker. kay, what the fuck does that mean and how did that work, you ask? well, my mother was very into Traditional Feminine Roles and Learning How to Run A Household For Your Husband, so we got real involved in 4H. this is also why we had chickens, they were a 4H project. I don’t have the time or energy to explain 4H you’re going to have to google it. anyway, two weeks before the county fair you would take all your baked goods to the 4H office, drop it off, and then you’d find out at the fair what you won/how you did. made a lot of shit! like to think i know my way around a kitchen! didn’t do a lot of pastrymaking that wasn’t puff or piecrust or really fancy icing bc I was a) a child and b) had access to just the kitchen in my house, but did a lot of breadmaking and general cake/cookie/bar baking, also a lot of meringue for whatever reason? there’s a polish dessert, chrusciki, that you have to roll out mad thin on marble with a marble rolling pin to keep it chilled and then fry it very very quickly, i’m sure all that shit is still sitting in a box somewhere.  i think the last thing that wasn’t a mug cake i baked were blueberry muffins with streusel like two summers ago bc my housemate bought like five pounds of blueberries on a deep discount bc they were literally about to go bad.

You inspired me to go to Paris Baguette today and it is literally the best thing ever?! Korean food is quickly becoming one of my faves thanks to you Kim 💖 I hope you've had a wonderful day so far
Also: I am super late for this anon I didn’t receive a notif for this ask??? omf I only found it when answering the tortie question 😰 Happy to see someone else who loves Paris Baguette, please enjoy the pastrymakers. The last time I went, they were the only bakers open during a typhoon and they sold me a massive chocolate-coffee cake. It was very nice, even if I did have to take it back on foot during a typhoon 😂 If their various pizza breads are in season please also try some, though they may be somewhat on the sweet side.
