As Peponi pondered quietly to himself, it felt like the longest minute of Olive’s entire life. All she could do was stare at the grass beneath her feet, wishing the ground would just swallow her whole.

Peponi: You know what you must do with the child, Olive. You’ve known since the day he was born. It’s the same thing that we, as a family, have always done to survive this terrible curse... make it someone else’s problem. Olive: ...But-- Peponi: You didn’t need to dig me up to figure that out, did you? In fact, I get the suspicion that you’ve known this all along. Olive: You’re right, but... I don’t know if I can, father.

Peponi: Come on now, don’t tell me you’ve actually grown attached to the little brat. Olive: Of course I haven’t! He is a... a means to an end, nothing more. Peponi: Indeed! And it’s not like you’d be betraying the Reaper, right? You’ve kept up your end of the bargain. You gave exactly what it wanted. Olive: ...But-- Peponi: And what are you going to do when the boy grows older? You won’t be able to keep him hidden forever. Better to get him out of your hair sooner than later, before he starts trying to rebel.

Peponi: Honestly, the solution is so simple, I’m surprised you haven’t done it sooner. You could quietly and covertly dump the child at the doorstep of some orphanage, and no one would ever be the wiser. That way, no one’s blood will be on your hands... no one who matters, that is. Olive: ... Peponi: But... that’s just my advice. It’s ultimately your decision on what to do with the boy. But you’d better make your choice quickly, or else you’ll have a serious problem on your hands.

A part of her was horrified by her father’s deeply callous words. The rest of her, however, knew that he was right.

He was always right.

So i may have gotten invested into drawing a hypothetical fusion between @rambler-in-limbo ‘s whar and peponi Which i nickname the Frog lion ( that is foaming from the mouth). Two smolls combine into one tol.

i just legit picture them being all intimidating and then getting distracted by a ball of yarn.

Olive tentatively approached her father’s spirit, feeling his harsh stare scrutinizing her every move. It was just like old times. Needless to say, it was not a feeling she missed.

Peponi: So... what did you need from me? I already gave you just about everything I had in the will, what more could you want? Olive: Well, I... I need advice, father. I’ve landed myself in a situation that I’m not sure how to escape. Peponi: Hmph. As you do. Olive: I’ll try to keep it short. Decades ago, I made a pact with the Reaper to save Willow’s life. In exchange, he asked that I grant him an ‘heir to the scythe.’ And now I have a child that I can barely take care of, but no one can know he exists. No one can know that he’s tied to the Reaper, or to me.

Peponi: What?! Why would you ever do something like that? You know just as well as any of us how that... thing... is! Especially towards our family. Any deal you could possibly make with it would be a scam. Olive: Do you think I didn’t know that?! I didn’t really have a choice in the matter! Peponi: No, you absolutely did! Don’t try to dodge responsibility for this terrible decision. Olive: Willow’s life was on the line! Would you rather I just let your daughter die? Is that really what you’re saying right now?

At that, Peponi went silent. In life, he was not especially known for his outstanding selflessness, but they both knew he was the type to go above and beyond to protect his children from the inevitability of death.

That is... for better or worse.
