« Notes de lumière » de Ray.k.Metzker

Ray.K.Metzker (né en 1931 dans le Milwaukee) illustre à merveille ce qu’est la photographie au sens étymologique du terme : « photos – graphein » en grec, soit « peindre avec la lumière ». Ce virtuose de l’ombre et de la lumière a exploré toutes les facettes de ce soleil qui éclaire les angles et les hommes et qui produit le contrepoint exact de la lumière, l’obscur. Avec un sens du cadrage et du découpage de l’image que ne renieraient pas ses mentors de l’Institute od Design de Chicago, Harry Callahan et Aaron Siskind, le photographe américain a sillonné dans les années 50 les rues de Chicago et de Philadelphie puis celles du monde entier. Tel un chasseur, il n’a eu de cesse de surprendre ces silhouettes qui jaillissent de la pénombre, de capturer les cassures architecturales et spectrales du décor urbain et le jeu des ombres et des reflets sur les façades transformées en autant de tableaux étranges. Sa maîtrise du noir et blanc, son expertise en matière de tirage photo et son sens du rythme hérité de sa passion pour la musique, nous donnent des compositions magnifiquement sublimées par la bichromie. Même sa veine expérimentale faite de collages et de montages offre des tableaux très graphiques, déroutants et intrigants.

« Notes de lumière » regroupe en 270 pages près de cinquante années de production artistique avec ses différents travaux sur le clair-obscur, sa fascination pour les silhouettes crépusculaires et le cisèlement architectural produit par la lumière. Les collages et autres impromptus, autant de notes de lumière qui par petites touches et par grandes rasades de lumière, nous montrent un regard aiguisé, inventif, le sien. Ce chercheur de l’ombre, ce sculpteur de l’image et cet amoureux de la pénombre, s’est aventuré dans bien des domaines (négatifs superposés, compositions expérimentales, photomontage, solarisation, design) à contre-courant des styles et des modes de l’époque (photo couleur, photo reportage) mais en restant toujours une référence en matière de photographie outre-Atlantique.

Passionné par la lumière et ce qu’elle génère, il finira par s’installer au Nouveau Mexique où il enseignera la photo dans les années 70 avant de rejoindre la Grèce et l’Italie dans les années 80. Ses derniers travaux comme « Dordogne, France » publié en 1989 suggèrent une photographie moins intransigeante sur les contrastes et moins habitée par cet éclairage absolu qu’il semble avoir cherché à capter quasiment toute sa vie. Il s’est éteint en octobre 2014. « Notes de lumière » édité par Steidl fait aujourd’hui figure de « classique » dans l’histoire de la photographie américaine mais on reste encore frappé par la puissante modernité et l’inventivité de sa production picturale.
