In case you don’t believe that the new baseball rules are, indeed, lighting a fire under the torpid old game, consider this: 

On Tuesday the Detroit Tigers and the Cleveland Indians played a double-header - two games, back to back - in 4 hours and 14 minutes. The first nine innings took 2 hours and 24 minutes; the second game took a mere 1 hour and 50 minutes.

In three different cases last season, single nine-inning games took longer than 4 hours and 14 minutes. The longest nine-inning game on record - between the Red Sox and the Yankees, on June 24, 2016 - lasted 4 hours and 45 minutes.

Then chief time-saver, among others, is the pitch clock. Pitchers now have 15 seconds to deliver a pitch (20 seconds when runners are on base). Violators get charged with a ball.

By the way, the Tigers won both ends of Tuesday’s double-header.
