Week 3

For project one, I was thinking of redesigning the packaging for either a body wash box package or a Pocky package. The reason why I chose these two to redesign is because they both use an excessive amount of plastic and many layers of unnecessary packaging.

For the body wash box, there are a total of three layers of plastic and cardboard, which is unneeded and wasteful. My idea for the redesign is to use recycled cardboard and paper boxes as the main base, and then I will add some design details to the box to make it more aesthetically pleasing. For the inside, there will be four compartments for the body wash and the three bath bombs. I will also add either recycled paper mache or biodegradable packing peanuts to secure the products. My goal for the box is to attract people to buy the product and for the packaging to be reused or to be recycled.

As for the Pocky box, they used a layer of plastic to wrap up 12 smaller plastic bags of Pocky which is pretty unnecessary. My idea for this packaging would be to use a bigger-sized recycled cardboard box to store the 12 bags for Pocky. As for the smaller bags for the Pocky, I will probably use seaweed packaging or another smaller version of the recycled boxes to hold them. My goal for this package is similar to the body wash box, since I want both of them to have a pleasing exterior and to be able to be reused or recycled.

Blog Post #9 Rationales Refined

OS School Project: “A new look on old tradition” - OS school revamp

The challenge My main challenge was to find a design solution that could still capture the existing style and ideology of an establishment of 10 years while modernizing it for the current time. To better understand the passion and value of the brand, I engaged in a three-hour meeting with the president to discuss the brand's history, ideology, and value. We walkthrough the many past projects to modernize the brand and plan out what needed to be updated. The plan included: A revamped brand guide, slogan, brochure, envelope, and 2 iterations of their ongoing TikTok series.

The approach I tackled the brand guide first and foremost to establish a guideline for my later project. Their past brand guide was still very good but it lacked a typography set and the color palette could be considered unappealing to their targeted audience. I opted for a more common typeset that was compatible with the Vietnamese keyboard, offered a good range of weights, and could be easily accessed for download in the event of a computer change. As for the palette, Although I was fond of the original slogan design, the president insisted on a new design, So based on the past design, I made changes to the marking of the words to enhance brand originality. For the brochure and envelope, they needed a desperate revamp. The old brochure is quite outdated, and they did not have a branded envelope. The brochure needed to be able to be folded into thirds to fit in the envelope and mailed out. During the meeting, I discovered that they had two ongoing series on TikTok, prompting me to create an introduction for them to distinguish and ensure consistency in their online content.

Pocky Project “New design same love” - Pocky’s package redesign

The challenge Originating from Japan, Pocky is a brand beloved by many in the East Asian culture and its packaging has become a familiarity with many of its customers. Yet, when sitting on the shelf of a convenience store here in Canada, the packaging seems last luster and quite similar to many of its competitors next to it, reducing the appeal of the cultural snack to a wider audience. As a supporter of Pocky and its charm, my objective is to revamp its packaging to better reflect the brand's delightful and whimsical essence while modernizing its image.

The approach With the slogan "Share the happiness", Pocky has become a cultural phenomenon in Japan, even inspiring its own dedicated holiday known as "Pocky Day". In designing the brand, I aimed to convey its sweetness and unique identity while paying homage to its Japanese origins. My research led me to adopt a simple graphical illustration style that not only differentiates the various Pocky flavors but also sets the brand apart from its competitors. And to help not alienate the brand from its existing audience, I incorporate the iconic Pocky stick into the new design. Though the creation of pocky's logo was more of an accident, after many positive comments, I decided to include it in the final design. As a passionate fan of Pocky, I expanded the project beyond just the packaging design, creating a promotional booklet and advertisement video to further showcase the snack's irresistible charm.

“Certainty encourage kind heart” - A case study on charity scams

The challenge Charity scams are a common problem everywhere, taking advantage of people's kindness, and damaging them financially and emotionally. Charity scams also damage honest charity, giving less to actual causes.

The research The issue of charity fraud and lack of trust in charitable organizations is a growing concern for donors. A survey commissioned by CanadaHelps.org and Capital One Canada found that 45% of millennials take no steps to ensure a charity is legitimate before donating and over half of Canadians are less likely to give to charity based on a fear of fraudsters. Furthermore, a report by the UK Charity Commission warned charity leaders to protect their organizations against fraud and cybercrime, as charities reported almost £8.6 million of lost funds in the last financial year. In addition, the Aviva Fraud Report revealed that 1 in 5 individuals have received coronavirus-related financial scams in the UK. The National Fraud Authority estimates that the sector loses around £1.1 billion per year to fraud. However, despite these concerns, most donors would give more under the right circumstances, with 72% stating they would give more if their finances allowed it and 65% stating they would give more if they knew the impact of their donations. Donors also express concern about determining a charity's credibility and trustworthiness and the possibility of their donations not being put to good use. Charities that are transparent about their operations and impact may help to alleviate donor concerns and build trust in the charitable sector.

The approach To address this issue, a platform designed to provide peace of mind for donors by verifying the legitimacy of charities and ensuring the secure handling of contributions is Charity Check. "Charity Check" Project - a non-profit organization that checks for charity legitimacy and gives engagement to honest charity. The charity's legitimacy will be graded through a set of "Legitimacy Guidelines", and then ranked by a set of badges. For charities that have good scores, Charity Check will generate a QR code that the charities can use as an advertisement. The QR code will lead donors to the Charity Check's website where they can check on the evaluation of the charity. A small monthly handbook is distributed to the retail vender to help promote legitimate charities and provide funding for charity research.
