Fitness update time baybeeeeeeeee! I once again had to gather the balls to post the photos here so uh. Ye. :D

Like the last one, more details will be under the cut, but for the TL;DR crowd:

Current: 177lbs | Estimated BMI: 24-26% | Push Pull Legs split at 6 Days a week

Notes: Training stimulus for this block focused on lifting basics and intensity: establishing a stronger mind-muscle connection and knowing how training to true mechanical failure feels like. Additional challenge: Finding maintenance calories and maintaining weight in the general range of 175-180lbs before re-attempting 1st Lean Bulk attempt.

Results: All lifts have seen an increase in working weight. Noticeably more muscle definition overall over the course of the last two months. Weight largely remained the same; assume maintenance calories has been accurately found.

Sooooooo the last two months have been kinda crazy. I took a look at my past lifting logbooks and found that despite my PRs being higher than the last recorded attempt, my overall working weights for all of my lifts hadn't really moved much. Partially out of fear of injury, but mostly due to the noticeable lack of real intensity in the training.

On top of that I found that my weight wasn't going down or up at the calories I was eating at, but my energy had begun to drop and recovery was suffering. Originally I was meant to be in my first bulk, but my weight never moved, and that ultimately resulted in me switching strategies for my nutrition too.

Basic idea: dial up the intensity, RPE of 8-9.5. Find true maintenance calories.

For nutrition: I used the TDEE calculator for my calories this time. It's supposedly more accurate than most other calorie calculators including MyFitnessPal's calculator, which gave me 2200 calories as my "bulk". Welp, turns out that's wrong; 2200 is my cutting number with my current activity level. And given how long I've been in a cut, it explained why, even in the deficit still, my weight never moved: it's too low to gain weight, and with how long I been in a deficit up until then my body was adapted too much to continue losing fat. So I instead switched focus onto finding my actual maintenance calories by immediately bumping my calories to the number the TDEE calculator gave me (2600 cal) and adjusting based on how my weight trend.

Result is, over the course of 2 months I gained 2 pounds but I'm certain this is almost entirely muscle (based on look, measurements, and performance in the gym); I've otherwise hadn't changed weight wise. This is good to know; it means I can eat more than I initially thought and gives me a stronger baseline for when I do actually go into a real bulk.

For training: First thing I focused on was my legs, which was arguably my weak link. This is largely due to an old injury in my left knee made it hard to reach full range of motion, and the strength discrepancy between my left and right leg because of it was pretty noticeable. Correcting it is one of the reasons why I switched to PPL training split, with Legs being trained first every cycle.

For both my legs and my isolation exercises I utilized unilateral versions of all my exercises; working each limb separately instead of together. I also incorporated a different set program: 2 working sets of 6-10 reps, 1-2 sets taken to true mechanical failure. The failure sets were meant for me to get used to the very uncomfortable sensation of training the muscle to- and past - it's actual limit and not my mental limit while maintaining proper form technique. That shit is rough, but it ensured that I was training with actual intensity and I was taking the muscle to true failure for growth, which in turn would help with building better muscle-mind connection with each muscle bilaterally and unilaterally.

For compounds I didn't take any of the lifts to true failure due to the higher fatigue and recovery toll. Instead I focused on building strength skill, so the set program was: 1 Topset (heaviest set of the exercise) 1-3 reps, 2 working sets for 5-8 reps. Any hypertrophy work for these lifts were always done with machine accessories for stability and safety.

Results thus far has seen my overall strength increasing, my knee is much stronger and stable (tested my squats and I can safely squat my own bodyweight without pain or wobbling, which is a feat due to being unable to do that months ago), and I confidently can say I have better form and idea of intensity.

SO! With all of that said I'd say this block was overall a success after much trial and error. Now that I've gotten a better idea of a few things, my next move right now is to take a deload week for some much needed rest, then structure my next block for a more strength focus alongside my 2nd attempt at an actual lean bulk. The goal is to gain at least 4-5 pounds of muscle by the beginning of next year and make a new maxout for my PRs, so I might look a lil soft the next time I do a progress report but hopefully I'll be much stronger and ready for my second cutting phase.

This shit is hard, but I'm loving it to death man. I'm having a lot of fun learning and going through the journey and now I can confidently say that I'm at the Intermediate stage of lifting! I also think I know the type of weightlifter I am now. I've heard the term "powerbuilding" a few times now and I feel it fits; primarily lifting to build strength, but also throwing in some bodybuilding rhetoric for aesthetics.

Like I said a while back I'm seriously considering recording my workouts and posting those as I go on my Instagram, and I've actually bought a lil phone stand to practice recording and being more comfortable in front of the camera. We'll see how that goes I suppose!

Slowly rotating a vague Cars ‘social media AU’ thingy in my head. It’s less an AU, and more just speculating about what the character’s posting styles would be like.

I imagine Lightning is a weird mix of ‘Sanitized self promotion that was 100% written by his PR manager’ and ‘Insane shit out of nowhere that gets him trending on twitter for a couple days’

Like, one day, he’ll post something like “Hey everyone! Excited for the race tomorrow, I hope to see you all there! -Kachow!” With a super professionally done photo of him with the details of the race edited alongside it. Then the next day he’ll post a shaky vertical video of him and Cal giving Jackson the middle finger while his back is turned, trying and failing not to giggle like stupid teenagers.

The racing side of twitter becomes basically unusable for the next couple days as, in classic twitter fashion, people take it way too seriously and start fighting. Jackson would 100% attract/cultivate the most RANCID stans on the planet.

They would absolutely doxx someone for disagreeing with them and only make the situation worse because they’re all petty, rabid and incredibly parasocially attached to him.

But…yeah. I feel someone would have a secret fandom tumblr but I’m not sure who……this is all just food for thought tbh.

Rare is the day Cal is up before Greez, but today’s that day and Greez finds the kid in the galley, staring into the cupboards like he has no idea what food is…

…or he’s sleepwalking.

“You sleepwalking?” Greez asks.

“No,” Cal sighs.

Greez looks, but BD’s not with him. “Something wrong?”

Closing the cupboard, Cal turns to Greez without meeting his eyes. He’s squirming. The kid is definitely squirming. What’s he done? Has he damaged the Mantis? No, wait, is he sick? Is this a Cere problem? It’s probably a Cere –

“I’m hungry.”

That’s it? That’s his big –

“And I don’t… I don’t know… I can’t…”

“Sometime today, Cal.”

He blushes a bright red. “I don’t know how to cook any of this stuff.”

“Oh!” Greez gasps. He sees Cal flush a brighter shade of shameful red. Crap. Not the right reaction. “Oh. Oh, kid. Sorry, I didn’t even think.”

And now that he is thinking about it, he realizes unless its super basic (making tea, making toast, spreading stuff on toast), pre-cooked, or straight out a packet, Greez has never seen Cal prepare food for himself.

“It’s okay,” Cal says. “Why would you when I never said anything ‘til now?”

Greez can’t stand it. He can’t stand the way Cal deflects apologies. And he can’t stand that this kid, who can use the Force for all kinds of insane antics, can’t cook. It’s a basic life skill, one he intends to hammer into Cal, starting right now. “Alright. Sit. I’m gonna make you something nice and easy, and you’re gonna watch and follow along. Or are you a note taker? How’s the best way for you to learn?”

Cal stares at him for a second before shaking himself. “I guess I learn best by being shown what to do. That’s how Pr – that’s how I learned on Bracca. And with the Jedi.”

“Great, I teach best by demonstrating,” Greez says. “Wash up. We’re gonna start with the basics and build up from there. Nice and easy. What could go wrong?”

“Uh – ”

“Cal, forget I asked. Now go on, wash your hands.”

The basics is scrambling and seasoning eggs. Gentle seasoning because Cal has a delicate palate after years of what he calls ‘Bracca Stodge’. He’ll get better with time and exposure, according to Cere. Not today though. Today is small. Today is a baby step, and Greez is relieved to have an eager and willing student in Cal. For someone so familiar with breaking things and fighting, he can be surprisingly gentle and deft of touch when he needs to be. For a moment Greez pictures him as one of those little Jedi Padawans Cere’s told him about, all bright eyed and idealistic. The idea of baby Jedi kind of terrifies Greez because who in their right minds puts tiny children in danger, no matter how superpowered, but he has never and will never say that aloud. Anyway, Cal’s a bit too weather-beaten to call idealistic, although the will to learn hasn’t diminished at all. And Greez can’t help but melt just the teeniest tiniest little bit when he sees how proud Cal is of himself when he succeeds in making his own breakfast.

“Thanks, Greez,” Cal says after he finishes inhaling his food. “You’re a great teacher.”

“Yeah, you’re welcome. Just don’t put me out of a job, alright? I enjoy cooking. It’s very cathartic for me.”

Laughing, Cal leans back in his chair. “Don’t worry, I won’t be a threat to you any time soon.”

Before Greez can respond, BD-1 trumpets his arrival. He leaps onto Cal’s back, asking what he missed. When Cal explains how Greez taught him to cook an egg, BD lets out a sorrowful beep.

“What’s wrong with the droid?” Greez asks.

Cal smiles fondly at his friend. “He’s sad he didn’t get to scan it before I ate it.”

“Oh.” Freaky little thing, scanning people’s meals. “Good news: he’s gonna have plenty more chances.”

Cal perks up at this, and so does BD-1.

Greez turns away before they can see his smile. What a ridiculous pair they are.

PALO ALTO – California track & field ended its regular season in tremendous fashion this week, picking up a more-than-decisive victory on the men's side at the 129th Big Meet by demolishing Stanford at Cobb Track and Angell Field by a margin of 114-48, its largest point differential since 1992. The men also picked up two meet records courtesy of NCAA leader Rowan Hamilton (hammer, 74.46m/244-3) and the 4x100m relay quartet of Chase Williams, George Monroe, Mason Mangum and David Foster (39.46); both were previously owned by the Cardinal, with Hamilton's surpassing Dave Popejoy's 1995 mark by over four meters.   The win from Hamilton capped off the Golden Bears' first podium sweep of the day, which included Ivar Moisander's second-place mark of 68.29m (224-0) and Michael Gupta's third-place 64.57m (211-10); the latter, a personal-best, moved Gupta up to No. 7 in program history. Cal also scored all nine points in the men's pole vault thanks to Will Siemens (4.77m/15-7.75), Parker Terrill (4.77m/15-7.75) and David Brok (4.47m/14-8), then repeated that feat in the discus, where Justin Wirtz's third-place 52.53m/172-4 followed massive personal bests from Nick Godbehere (53.85m/176-8) and Charlie Dang (53.58m/175-9). Turner's result highlighted one of three podium sweeps on the women's side, with Kylie Hilton (4.07m/13-4.25) and Ali Sahaida (3.97m/13-0.25) rounding out the pole vault top three. Cal also earned that distinction in the 100m hurdles – with Jazlynn Shearer's 13.52 beating out a 13.53 from Jada Hicks and a 14.17 from Mari Testa – and the women's hammer, where Jasmine Blair's 60.47m (198-4) led Adrianna Coleman's 56.54m (185-6) and Destiny Okoh's 56.47m (185-3). Blair later picked up another win in the discus, where she improved her PR (and program No. 2 mark) by over a meter to 59.60m (195-6).   Cal's women took home three more field event victories. The shot put contest landed in favor of Caisa-Marie Lindfors, who posted a throw of 15.18m (49-9.75) for the win, while Myla Canty out-leapt the field in the triple jump (12.19m/40-0) and Carolina Visca out-threw her competition in the javelin (50.03m/164-1).   "I think all of our kids competed to the best of their ability," Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Robyne Johnson said. "Credit to Stanford's women – they were the better team today. Our guys did a really good job, really showed up. I think we can do something special at the Pac-12 Championships."

Seven Sentence Sunday

After writing that 6k married in vegas fic in three hours earlier this week, I've had a bit of writer's block with my baseball AU, so I'm putting that aside for a little bit and working on my outsider POV PR disaster fic.

Here's a snippet from the scene where Liliana (my beautiful OC who runs communications for the LAFD) and Chief Miranda Williams as they decide on the firehouses to be featured in an LAFD documentary.

Liliana starts with station 10, then goes into the 126, then the 133, before finally getting to the 118. She's trying really hard to keep her opinion out of it while she talks about each station, but she’s got her favorites.  “The 118 always seems to be in the middle of it,” Miranda says with a laugh. “I remember when I was still a battalion chief during that 7.1 earthquake a few years ago. Two of them firefighters scaled the inside of the building to rescue a couple people and another one of them got buried in the collapsed parking garage.” “Oh god,” Liliana can’t help the gasp that leaves her. No matter how long she’s worked for the LAFD, hearing these kinds of stories still horrifies her a little. There’s a reason she works behind a desk and isn’t running into burning buildings and that reason is she doesn't have a death wish. “Did they survive?” “Well Captain Nash and his team defied my direct orders and went looking for her,” Miranda says with a small smile. “And you know I don’t like being left out of the fun.” “So you joined and she survived,” Liliana knows she’s got a fond look on her face, she can’t help it.  “I didn’t do much, but she did survive.” “So, is that a yes to the 118?” “That’s a yes to the 118,” Miranda smiled at her over her wine glass.

Respawn Entertainment, my hat goes off to you for putting details in places you could have gotten away with not putting detail. Getting the angle just right with the in-game camera in order to capture this (from my second playthrough) had not been easy.

And to see it's not filler text? Love!!

You can't even see it from Cal's prospective when you access Sister Taske's shop, and the blue-white nature of the light for the holobooks makes it difficult to read due to the lack of contrast. But using the grayscale filter in-game provides decent contrast, allowing goofballs like me to spend some time transcribing a fictive language/alphabet to satisfy curiosity.
