My meme this week is sourced from @litausten on Instagram, which boasts of 1.6K posts bearing the hashtag “prideandprejudicememes.” This meme is fondly referred to as “kombucha girl”—the actual person featured is Brittany Broski, a 23 year old influencer and youtuber. The meme references this TikTok from August 2019, in which Brittany tries Kombucha for the first time. Her opening comment, that it smells like a public restroom, also rose to fame as a reaction comment. In the video, Broski shows a mixed reaction. Her initial thought is “NO,” but then after a second “…well…” The two panel meme shown above is used to imply a mind has changed, or there’s a second opinion that’s the opposite of the first.
This meme is in reference to Mr. Darcy’s hypocrisy in thinking of the Bennet family. Initially, he prevents Mr. Bingley from pursuing a relationship with Jane Bennet further. The first reason for this is that she does not seem to show much affection for him, the second being that her family doesn’t have much going for them in terms of fortune. This leads to Mr. Bingley leaving the country for London without any intention of returning. One would think, therefore, that Mr. Darcy would avoid any entanglement with the Bennet family himself. However, in the scene where he admits to meddling with Jane’s relationship, he also proposes to Elizabeth Bennet. Clearly, his dissent for the Bennets and their lack of a fortune only goes so far, and doesn’t apply to him (speaking to his pride and his understanding that he’s above the rules).
