The Global Landscape of Money in Politics: A Comparative Analysis
In the intricate dance of democracy, the relationship between money and politics is both inevitable and controversial. As nations strive for a balance that ensures political influence cannot simply be bought, they grapple with the dual imperatives of fostering political participation and preventing corruption. This article delves into the regulatory frameworks governing campaign finance in five…

Police and justice for the people
It’s obvious that the rioters, those who burn, steal and commit violence are criminals who must be judged and sentenced in accordance with the law. There is a great deal of trafficking in the suburbs, including drugs. What a temptation when unpunished trafficking is infinitely more profitable than a laborious and unjust search for bad jobs! If the police catch a trafficker, he will most likely be released because the justice system can’t take it any more. And yet it’s normal to want to be heard in a democracy! Why beat on the masses without listening?
There is clearly a problem of unacceptable violent behaviour on the part of the police. Too many people have died as a result of increasingly powerful weapons! Our elected representatives support them from afar with their calls for firmness, but every year they reduce the numbers and resources of the police and the justice system. A patrol that has to share a bullet-proof waistcoat for four officers for 9 days without rest, surrounded by unpunished criminals, is bound to react out of fear. Give them a gun and you guarantee violence and deaths like Nahel’s and all the others that weren’t honoured by the cameras. Yet the police should be guaranteeing the right to demonstrate, guaranteeing the safety of demonstrators by protecting them from rioters and looters. They should be accountable to the people, not to the government.
Let’s not get bogged down in this duality. Pointing out the violence of some does not mean that you are taking sides with the others, and neither group deserves impunity. They deserve justice. However, justice is cruelly lacking in resources and is unable to judge criminals, violent police officers, corrupt elected representatives and billionaires who are killing the planet and monopolising all its resources at the expense of the poorest within an acceptable timeframe. To carry out this justice, we need elected prosecutors who serve the people and not the government.
This will not necessarily be more costly for the citizen, because there is an unlimited resource of “bullshit jobs” in both the public and private sectors, as well as subsidies that could be redeployed in the justice system, the police, education, organic farming and health.
Similarly, in a true democracy, the courts should apply the laws as decided by the people and not just by elected representatives. If the people rise up in revolt, they can use the popular initiative referendum to peacefully settle a political dispute.

"For the first time in almost 60 years, a state has formally overturned a so-called “right to work” law, clearing the way for workers to organize new union locals, collectively bargain, and make their voices heard at election time.
This week, Michigan finalized the process of eliminating a decade-old “right to work” law, which began with the shift in control of the state legislature from anti-union Republicans to pro-union Democrats following the 2022 election. “This moment has been decades in the making,” declared Michigan AFL-CIO President Ron Bieber. “By standing up and taking their power back, at the ballot box and in the workplace, workers have made it clear Michigan is and always will be the beating heart of the modern American labor movement.”
[Note: The article doesn't actually explain it, so anyway, "right to work" laws are powerful and deceptively named pieces of anti-union legislation. What right to work laws do is ban "union shops," or companies where every worker that benefits from a union is required to pay dues to the union. Right-to-work laws really undermine the leverage and especially the funding of unions, by letting non-union members receive most of the benefits of a union without helping sustain them. Sources: x, x, x, x]
In addition to formally scrapping the anti-labor law on Tuesday [February 13, 2024], Michigan also restored prevailing-wage protections for construction workers, expanded collective bargaining rights for public school employees, and restored organizing rights for graduate student research assistants at the state’s public colleges and universities. But even amid all of these wins for labor, it was the overturning of the “right to work” law that caught the attention of unions nationwide...
Now, the tide has begun to turn—beginning in a state with a rich labor history. And that’s got the attention of union activists and working-class people nationwide...
At a time when the labor movement is showing renewed vigor—and notching a string of high-profile victories, including last year’s successful strike by the United Auto Workers union against the Big Three carmakers, the historic UPS contract victory by the Teamsters, the SAG-AFTRA strike win in a struggle over abuses of AI technology in particular and the future of work in general, and the explosion of grassroots union organizing at workplaces across the country—the overturning of Michigan’s “right to work” law and the implementation of a sweeping pro-union agenda provides tangible evidence of how much has changed in recent years for workers and their unions...
By the mid-2010s, 27 states had “right to work” laws on the books.
But then, as a new generation of workers embraced “Fight for 15” organizing to raise wages, and campaigns to sign up workers at Starbucks and Amazon began to take off, the corporate-sponsored crusade to enact “right to work” measures stalled. New Hampshire’s legislature blocked a proposed “right to work” law in 2017 (and again in 2021), despite the fact that the measure was promoted by Republican Governor Chris Sununu. And in 2018, Missouri voters rejected a “right to work” referendum by a 67-33 margin.
Preventing anti-union legislation from being enacted and implemented is one thing, however. Actually overturning an existing law is something else altogether.
But that’s what happened in Michigan after 2022 voting saw the reelection of Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a labor ally, and—thanks to the overturning of gerrymandered legislative district maps that had favored the GOP—the election of Democratic majorities in the state House and state Senate. For the first time in four decades, the Democrats controlled all the major levers of power in Michigan, and they used them to implement a sweeping pro-labor agenda. That was a significant shift for Michigan, to be sure. But it was also an indication of what could be done in other states across the Great Lakes region, and nationwide.
“Michigan Democrats took full control of the state government for the first time in 40 years. They used that power to repeal the state’s ‘right to work’ law,” explained a delighted former US secretary of labor Robert Reich, who added, “This is why we have to show up for our state and local elections.”"

It's pretty sobering to see this blatant reminder of how racist Australia remains, and how resistant ppl remain to acknowledging the colonial horrors wrought historically and currently upon First Nations people. It's infuriating to know that even an at-worst ineffectual attempt to close the gap and make steps towards reconciliation, truthing and treaty has been so comprehensively stopped.
However frustrating they may have been, I know my months of trying to counter misinformation and persuade unsure relatives is nothing compared to the barrage of abuse that this referendum has unleashed upon any Aboriginal person who dares to have any sort of public or online presence. So much suffering because of this referendum, only to come to nothing.
We have so much fucking work to do.

working on a better written post covering the topic with links etc, but just putting it out there that online voting for the ontario community referendum on the privitization of healthcare is now available, & reminding people that in-person voting will be taking place on the 26th & 27th of this month.
Please, please, make your voices heard. The Ford government is going against federal legizlation in spite of it's promise to the public not to push privatization within the healthcare system. Do not stay silent.

what do you think of the reveal that nicola sturgeon deleted all her covid whatsapp messages?
I honestly don’t care, and not for the reason you think.
I’m exhausted. I saw this on twitter two days ago and I quote tweeted it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My utilities bill is higher than ever, my weekly shop is more expensive than ever, I have no savings after giving it all to my boiler and even then I had to ask people for help.
I do not give a fuck about covid what’s app messages, which aren’t important anyway because What’s App wasn’t used as an official communication channel throughout the pandemic.
I do not give a shit when the worst people in Scottish politics try to hype up a scandal.
‘Dame’ thick-as-shit Jackie Baillie who lied to elderly voters about their pensions during the independence referendum.
Misogynist Alex Cole-Hamilton who still ducks media scrutiny over everything the former Scottish LibDem CEO, Emma Walker, has came public with.
And racist little cunt Douglas Ross who’s ‘if he was prime minister for the day’ fantasy was harsh restrictions on the Gypsy, Roma, Traveller community.
I do not care what these pile of arseholes think is a huge scandal when me and all my friends are struggling with basic needs. Friends who were managing fine a few months ago and are now aggressively budgeting to make ends meet.

Mr. Lanez, 30, was convicted of three felony counts: assault with a semiautomatic handgun, carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. He faces more than 20 years in prison and could be deported.
The case, which played out as both a tawdry tabloid narrative and a weighty referendum on the treatment of Black women in hip-hop and beyond, was closely watched for both its famous characters and what it said about the recent adjudication of alleged abuse by notable men, such as Johnny Depp and Harvey Weinstein, in court and in public.
Mr. Lanez, though not a household name before the case, has seen his celebrity profile rise since the shooting, earning explicit and implied support from various corners of the hip-hop universe, including influential blogs, social media accounts and the rappers-turned-talking heads 50 Cent and Joe Budden.

lotta academics have bought into the idea that predatory journals only exist because people don't know better, rather than because there are structural pressures encouraging publishing at any cost (incl. a literal monetary cost) in order to generate a line on a CV. one danger in believing that these journals publish only the ignorant or uninformed is that people come to believe that they and their respected colleagues are above all that, because they're considering publication to be an unbiased referendum on the quality of the work and not analysing the material conditions at play (the academic's career and professional interests, the university's financial and cultural capital, the journal as a business entity, &c).
the difference between a 'successful' and 'unsuccessful' academic is not that the former was inherently more deserving or smarter or harder-working... much more to do with luck, demographic privileges (which is to say also luck), and ability and willingness to work the system, including by generating publishable and published results. you can't get rid of predatory publishing so long as publication is a structural barrier to raises, job security, & reputation, & thinking that you personally are better than or smarter than some mythical category of Lesser Intellectuals based on what journal you publish in is just self-serving and naïve

25 April - Anniversary of Italy's Liberation
Tumblr media
25 April also known as the Anniversary of Italy's Liberation is a national holiday in Italy that commemorates the victory of the Italian resistance movement against Nazi Germany and the Italian Social Republic, puppet state of the Nazis and rump state of the fascists, culmination of the liberation of Italy from German occupation and of the Italian civil war in the latter phase of World War II. That is distinct from Republic Day (Festa della Repubblica), which takes place on 2 June and commemorates the 1946 Italian institutional referendum.
Tumblr media
Every year on 25 April Italy celebrates Liberation Day, known in Italian as Festa della Liberazione, with a national public holiday.
In addition to the closure of schools, public offices and most shops, the day is marked with parades across the country, organised by ANPI, Italy's partisan association which preserves the memory of the Resistance movement against Fascism.
The occasion is held in commemoration of the end of the Fascist regime and of the Nazi occupation during world war two, as well as the victory of Italy's Resistance movement of partisans who opposed the regime.
Formed in 1943, the partigiani comprised a network of anti-Fascist activists, from diverse backgrounds including workers, farmers, students and intellectuals, across Italy.
Resistance
Tumblr media
Together they united in armed resistance against the Nazi occupation and the Fascist regime, making their struggle both a war of liberation and a civil war.
The annual event marks the day in 1945 when a nationwide radio broadcast calling for a popular uprising and general strike against the Nazi occupation and Fascist regime was announced by the National Liberation Committee of Upper Italy (CLNAI), a political umbrella organisation representing the Italian Resistance movement.
This announcement - made by partisan and future president of Italy Sandro Pertini - resulted in the capture and death of Fascist leader Benito Mussolini, who was shot three days later.
The Festa della Liberazione represents a significant turning point in Italy's history, paving the way for the referendum of 2 June 1946 when Italians voted in favour of a republic and against the monarchy which had been discredited during the war and whose members went into exile.
Scurati controversy
Tumblr media
This year's event takes place against the backdrop of a political controversy after the state broadcaster RAI stopped a well-known Italian writer from delivering an anti-fascist monologue on television a few days before the Festa della Liberazione.
Antonio Scurati accused RAI of censorship after his monologue was dropped abruptly from the Saturday night talkshow Chesarà for "editorial reasons".
The writer claimed that the move highlighted the alleged attempts by premier Giorgia Meloni's right-wing government to exert its influence over the state broadcaster which has seen several veteran presenters leave over the last year including Fabio Fazio, Bianca Berlinguer and Amadeus.
In his speech Scurati criticised the "ruling post-Fascist party" for wanting to "re-write history" rather than "repudiate its neo-fascist past".
RAI director Paolo Corsini rejected any talk of censorship, as did Meloni who responded to the controversy by posting Scurati's text on her Facebook page, stating that the broadcaster had "simply refused to pay 1800 euro (the monthly salary of many employees) for a minute of monologue".
Meloni added that the Italian people "can freely judge" the contents of the text which was later read live on air by Chesarà presenter Serena Bortone in an act of solidarity with Scurati.

Okay, so this is starting to make headlines in right-wing news sources in other countries, so I feel I have to explain this.
In Ireland, a Secondary School teacher by the name of Enoch Burke has been jailed.
Burke claims that this is because, in his own transphobic words, he "refused to call a boy a girl". This claim is being repeatedly by right-wing media internationally.
This is a lie.
Burke is being charged with contempt of court, after knowingly violating an injunction against him sought by his employer.
Back in August Burke's employer, a private religious boarding school run by the Church of Ireland (an Anglican denomination) held a meeting before the beginning of the school year. One of the things discussed was that a returning student had changed their name and was now using they/them pronouns, and that the school and teachers would be respecting this.
Later, at an official school church service, Enoch Burke loudly interrupted proceedings; in front of staff, parents and pupils; denouncing this position and spewing other transphobic bullshit. At a subsequent official dinner, he confronted the Principal, continually harassing her until others stopped him from following her.
As as a result of this, he was suspended with pay, pending an investigation. Because that's what happens when you shout at your employer in public.
Enoch Burke refused to accept the suspension, and despite repeated attempts to remove him from school grounds, kept showing up to teach his classes. His classes had to be moved to other classrooms, because he was occupying the original classroom.
The school then sought an injunction from the Irish High Court, basically a court order barrring him from school grounds. When he showed up the next day anyway, the police were called and he was arrested for contempt of court.
In court, when given the opportunity to purge his contempt, he refused, citing his faith. Don't know why he thinks his religion guarantees him a teaching position, but that's what he said.
He was jailed yesterday, until he purges his contempt of court, or a judge decides to let him out.
This is not Enoch Burke's first brush with the courts. His family, a group of Evangelical Christians, has caused several headlines over the years, mostly for opposition to LGBT causes.
Enoch himself was banned for life from Student Societies at his alma mater, the National University of Ireland Galway. This was because he and his siblings embezzled funds from the Christian Union Society they ran in order to print flyers advocating a position in a student union referendum. The flyers also had the college's logo on them, implying an official position of the college, which was against the college's code of conduct.
They brought the ban to court, claiming religious discrimination, which was rejected by the court.

Tory leadership candidates still trickling in but would you all like to know the top three preferred people the public want, according to the Times' polls?
Number Three: Rishi Sunak
Strong showing from the Grand Vizier! Not a surprise, he's been playing a long game and did one (1) good speech back in 2020. He also only appeared in photos from Partygate once, which is good going.
But, we all expected him to be number one! Who has beaten the former Chancellor?
Number Two: Don't Know
Yes that's right, in second place is indecision and ignorance! In all fairness, ignorance has been growing in popularity in the UK in recent years and saw a sharp upturn after the Brexit Referendum, so this is maybe a less surprising outcome than it seems. But! Who has defeated it for the top spot? Who is the preferred future leader of the Tory party, and the future Prime Minister of the nation?
Number One: None of the Above
IT'S NO ONE! The Odysseus Clause! What a triumph for the Tories. Good for None of Them. I look forward to None of Them taking their rightful place as leader of the country. We all love None of Them.

i really don't think it's possible to "push democrats left" or "hold them accountable." what mechanism exists that would make that possible? are there monthly referendums where everyone gets to vote on whether the already-elected dems get to keep their jobs? are there any laws that prevent politicians from just ignoring public opinion or campaign promises once they're in office?
is there a major political party to the left of the democrats? maybe they could form a coalition so the dems would have to support left-wing policies. in fact, you could just switch to voting for the labor party and the libs would lose power. i bet they'd notice that and maybe change their politics about it
but no, none of that exists. so how exactly are you supposed to push them to the left? pray about it? vote harder?
