One thing that will forever bother me is how people still clown on and make fun of Jeremy Strong for the way he goes along with his acting career. I have made a small rant about it. Read if you’d like haha
Some have called him so many names and said that he tries too hard. He puts so much thought in all of his characters rather than just reading the script and memorizing the lines. He focuses on even the smallest details in the character (even down to Vinny Daniels chewing gum in The Big Short) and really becomes that character. I seriously look at him as a completely different person when he is playing his characters, especially when I watched him play Kendall Roy. I sometimes still think Kendall and Jeremy are different people I am not even over exaggerating. He made Kendall Roy feel so real and I think that’s why I still am not over the show or character, because he has done such an amazing job with the character that I still feel so many emotions for Kendall even though he is just a fictional character and the show has been over for months now. I have never been more connected to and saddened for another character ever.
Jeremy says that just reading the script isn’t enough for him and he wants to experience and learn about the character as much as he can.
People think he is ridiculous for doing this sort of method acting and call him names but when the film comes out, he does such an amazing job, even if his character is just a small side character. To me, he makes the movie or series so much more believable.
He mentioned that acting for him was like escaping into a fantasy. I understand this deeply and I’m not even trying to be like “omg, I understand him. Im so different.” Im just trying to say I know the feeling. I am very introverted and shy and I have been like that my whole life, I acted in my school plays and as soon as I got onto the stage, I felt like a different person. I wasn’t the shy awkward weirdo, I felt as if I was my character. I even played the “funny” character in my twelfth grade high school play and the character was the complete opposite of me, loud and seemed to have no fear of anything. The character was the opposite of me but I managed to play the character well because it was so different from me that I won an award. (Still proud of myself for that hehe🤟🏻)
I will just forever respect him as he makes his characters come to life and does such a phenomenal job in every film/series he works in. In my opinion, he is so misunderstood. He is just a guy who is very passionate in what he does and he does it so brilliantly and I wish everyone could see it.
It’s so not going to happen lol but when I see his broadway show, I want to congratulate him on everything he has done and how hard he has worked Won’t happen though because for one, I probably will only see him on the stage and two, even if I did get lucky enough to somehow get him to sign my Playbill, I would probably be crying so hard and not being able to let words out properly💀 haha I can just imagine him, he’d give me like the side eye for crying so hard. I like to say that I’m like Lana Del Rey and I’m pretty when I cry but no, I am definitely not pretty when I ugly cry lolll.

first up is ALWAYS gtikbi idc it's a FUN SONG it's bouncy and happy it’s cringe it’s campy it’s the basic romance song for the female lead and i love it and i love christine and i love stephanie hsu she sounds amazing and the jake twist at the end the first time i heard it I was like 😦
i’m going off of the music but if we talk about the visuals then the HEARTS the cardboard hearts are so fun they’re so high school theater esque and the rest of the cast popping in and dancing and singing the way they randomly stick their head in kinda makes me feel like they were eavesdropping or something tbh and the way the squip was so sure of himself in bway he was literally smiling and conducting them hello
a strong STRONG contender is mts we’re introduced to everybody and it gives a good look into everyone’s character and a good look into JEREMY specifically and how he interacts with everyone and how life is for him and for everyone there’s michaels little solo which is a BOP every time everyone sounds so good and there are a bunch of underlaying motifs/melodies from other coming songs which is so cool for example smartphone hour when they’re talking about madeline and mitb + pants song during michael and jeremy’s convo
and VISUALS the bus effect and the classroom choreo is so funny every time and all their little mannerisms and the way they interact with each other throughout show their personality there are SO MANY DETAILS i think i lowkey learned the end bit of the bway choreo from watching it so much

did u see this whole millie bobby brown disclosure? Her saying that she doesn’t watch movies because she thinks it’s too long and she can’t just sit and watch. and this is sadly typical behavior from nepo babies and those kids that were essentially made to be actors by their parents. they don’t feel real love for the craft but get so many opportunities than other actors that study cinema and are very knowledgeable barely get.
but i think only actors that love cinema are able to transcend and work for a long time. a lot of people were calling Austin Butler pretentious but I find his knowledge of cinema admirable. chalamet also got called pretentious once for referencing a lot of movies but I find that normal because studying cinema as an actor should be your job? it’s part of the preparation? A look at the career both of them have… it’s easy to know when an actors loves the craft by how they speak, Florence’s hot wings interview was very insightful and you can tell she pays attention to every element of filmmaking.
For instance, I remember watching an interview w Tom Holland and I find him a charming guy but I really dislike how he once joked and made fun of a very valid question about studying process for a role - it doesn’t seem that he takes the craft that seriously and I find the instances of where he didn’t know who certain directors were and when he said Scorsese couldn’t direct a Marvel film so crazy considering how he has been the pioneer of so many “blockbuster” in its time, and his lack of cinema knowledge shows in the quality of his choices for roles.
I feel a lot of actors don’t realize that by saying things like they they get a lot of doors slammed in their face.
I'm late replying again sorry but all of this, yes. I tried not thinking about it too much but it definitely irks me. And I think there are a loooot of people of tbh all ages that feel this way. But it does particularly suck for someone making movies to feel this way? (I did see some conversation on twitter between people who actually work on film sets and they said this is common, particularly among like crew members like gaffers, lighting, etc etc.)
YES. This is why when "pretentious" discourse goes around because like Jacob Elordi talks about Marlon Brando (not his method acting, but just his acting) or old movies, people make fun of him and say he's just a try-hard hipster. But maybe... he loves acting and wants to improve his craft? Like, I agree. It's something that should come from a place of love and wanting to get better. We can't all be Hugh Grant and annoyed at the world all the time lmao. And like you said, same with Austin, Timothee, hell, remember the Jeremy Strong "dramaturgical" discourse that people freaked out about for a week because he used... a common theater word? Lmfao.
It's like, when letterboxd does their asking an actor or director their four favorites, there's always people in the comments saying they don't believe that an old French movie or hell even a 70s movie (that isn't The Godfather or Star Wars, bc apparently Jaws is pretentious?? LMAO), could be someone's fav and they're lying to look good. But if someone lists a bunch of animated Disney children's movies, La La Land, and Scott Pilgrim then they must be telling the truth. Maybe they both are? But god it's so frustrating to think that having taste beyond the basics is pretentious. Like, people call CHRISTOPHER NOLAN MOVIES PRETENTIOUS. Just because something is mildly to extremely clever or smart doesn't mean it's pretentious :)

I need to watch Florence on Hot Ones still but I loved seeing bits of her on the press tour for Oppenheimer and I saw a clip of her and Zendaya talking about the craft of cinematography (linked) and how like Flo told her story about the camera breaking on Oppenheimer, and Z talked about like how she loves sitting in the tent w the Dune cinematographer and learning how everything works. Like, they love filmmaking!!! And I love that! This is how actors become better, and can produce, and even direct successfully. (Z I think definitely will. She'd had plans to direct at least one Euphoria ep but of course shitshow that it is, it hasn't happened yet.)
But yeah agreed about Tom Holland it's all soooo. Idk. You can very much tell when someone really loved movies and the process of how they are made, or not. And that's the truth whether someone's favorite movie is Godzilla v. Kong or Breathless. But yes!!! I truly don't understand why they say things like that, like... unless you want a door closed, don't close it for no reason! Lmao. Ayo Edebiri has talked about this recently.
I really don't get that w Scorsese of all people too like... all his movies are fucking popcorn movies. It's all cinema but who the hell is thinking Goodfellas is boring? Or The Aviator? Hell, I just watched Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. It has a batshit opening and is suuuch a fast-paced movie for what it is like, about a woman coming to terms w loss and making it on her own w her annoying kid (affectionate) and domestic violence I just ?? I don't get it myself! And pretending Scorsese actually has a war against Marvel is stupid as fuck. I wish he did! Someone should.

RANT INCOMING SORRY
I don't want to be that person, but let me just say this year two autobiographical movies about the early life of a director came out (Armageddon Time by James Gray and The Fabelmans by Stephen Spielberg) and, when said directors had to choose actors to play their fathers- a pretty important role, I'd say- they respectively chose Jeremy Strong and Paul Dano, which are both incredible actors but, somehow, severely underrated (Strong more than Dano tbh). There are so many pretty faces at Hollywood, iconic actors, maybe with a much more iconic family name, but when it was time to put the portrayal of on of the most important people in these directors life in someone's hands none of these people had the honour. When it came to pick the very best, people you would trust with such hard work and responsibility, actors that we all know deserve way more recognition than they currently get were chosen. Makes you think why, if they're considered so good to be entrusted with such complicated roles, we don't see them that often in cinemas or tv shows. Their Wikipedia or Imbd pages are way less full than we'd think for such talent they have. Maybe it's the fact, even more than they aren't conventionally attractive of whatever, they both lack those iconic family names. But when you need quality, suddenly people know they have to turn to them. Just saying.

First of all, Jeremy Asiago!
Hes a nervous, cowardly guy whos doing his best! You may be wondering, why become a knight if your.. well, a coward. Its because his father practically guilt-tripped and pressured him into it. “You come from a long line of heroes, your brothers already so successful, why dont you follow in your ancestors tracks? Make this family proud.”
Moving away from flaws and such, hes a good guy! Also decently strong- hes pretty cool once you get to know him!
NEXT UP! Jerry Asiago!
Jeremys big brother; hes much more extroverted, energetic, and charismatic. Also a bit more egotistical and doesnt really know when to quit. He joined without anyone elses urging and is a star knight. Maybe even the best. He is also pretty cool, but can be insensitive. He loves Jeremy dearly and constantly tries to help and protect him.
Last but not least, Reynold Muenster!
He is condescending, insensitive, and kind of an asshole. Oh, have I mentioned hes actually a ghost? He is Jeremy and Jerrys grandpa, and he died saving citizens and such from a raging fire. I actually havent fully finished his lore and stuff, but im working on it!
oh i forgot his good traits! Fearless, strong, skilled, and clever. He was a very good knight, just like Jerry; Hell, maybe even better.

I've been watching TVD and have to agree with you that Stefan is actually a terrible person in ways that the show never acknowledges. He's so dishonest, hypocritical, self-superior etc., and I don't know if this is the writing or acting but despite all the talk about how kind he supposedly is, he nearly always comes off as fundamentally cold to me. He's "good" in a purely performative way but never seems to actually care about anyone except Elena and holds himself above everyone. And steroline was a disaster ---were we supposed to believe he was ever genuinely in love with her?! I would love to know what you love about Elena? Unlike most here, I don't dislike her! The problem is that I don't like her either---she's just kind of there, a generic, beautiful shell of a heroine who has no personality and is just kind of a plot device? I'm open to changing my mind and would love to hear what you like about her!
Ugh. I know. Stefan makes me so angry. To add to your little rant, he may care about Elena, but that is a nonissue when it suits him, and once she chooses Damon. Damon doesn't stop caring about her no matter what she chooses including when she erased her memory of them.
Now, what do I love about Elena?
I love her kind and loving heart: She instantly cares about Damon because he is Stefan's brother. She defends Caroline immediately when 1) Damon talks bad about her and 2) she finds out that Damon is physically hurting her. She tries to take care of her brother even using tough love when necessary. She tries to protect Bonnie from everything, then desperately tries to be there for her when bad things happen. She tries to keep Jenna out of everything even though it backfires. She adopts Alaric as a surrogate dad to help him as much as Jeremy and herself. She literally puts herself in danger numerous times to save Stefan even when she isn't in love with him anymore. She saves Damon when she barely likes him. She hates the thought of hurting people when she feeds to the point that she compels them not to hurt.
I like what I have said previously about Elena, so I am pulling from an old ask. You can find it below the keep reading.
Elena - Strengths: 1. Elena is strong, and I mean emotionally. She experiences horrific loss time after time and dies twice, and this girl gets up every morning and goes to school, takes care of her brother (and Jenna and Alaric), and continues to make it through. 2. She is also compassionate, as everyone knows. This is the reason she can care about Anna and Rebekah losing their mother even when they are doing bad things to her or her friends. It’s also the reason that she can fall in love with the love of her life. She doesn’t even have the capacity to hate Katherine as she is dying. For the record, I do. 3. I’m going to add a third because I want to. Elena supports her friends and family always. She encourages Jenna with Alaric. She tries to ease Jenna’s fear and guilt at the ritual. She basically takes care of Alaric after Jenna dies under the pretense that he is looking after her and Jeremy. She encourages Caroline with Matt and then Stefan and doesn’t judge the Klaroline hookup. She tries to stop Caroline from turning off her humanity and then works to help her turn it back on. She supports Bonnie with Jeremy and is mad on Bonnie’s behalf when he screws up the first time around. She consistently tries to be present for Bonnie when tragedy strikes and respectfully stays distant when Bonnie needs it even though it breaks her heart. She’s there for Stefan more than I agree with, so I’m not listing things here other than her always supporting the brothers being brothers. She knows that Damon cares about people long before anyone else figures it out. She supports him through losing Katherine, Rose dying, losing Stefan to Klaus, etc. That’s barely touching how she is with Damon, but this is long already.

Sebastian Stan excels as Trump, schooled by a Machiavellian mentor

“Donald has no shame.” This could well be part of the judge’s summing-up at the conclusion of Trump’s current hush-money trial, but for now it is a line spoken in The Apprentice, one of the most keenly anticipated films in Cannes this year.
Yes, you might think: tell us something we don’t know. That is indeed the biggest challenge facing writer Gabriel Sherman and director Ali Abbasi. While the world awaits the way forward, they go back. And so, like Darth Vader, Willy Wonka and Furiosa before him, Trump duly now gets a big-screen origin story.
We meet him as a gauche young lackey, collecting rent door-to-door for his slumlord father Fred and having abuse and boiling water thrown at him while already dreaming big of towering success. Sebastian Stan, the film’s greatest asset, plays down the mimicry at first. The Mussolini-esque pout and husky rhetorical style are not yet fully formed. This is a Trump you can almost warm to. Enter the catalyst: lawless attorney Roy Cohn, rendered in dead-eyed deadpan by Succession’s Jeremy Strong. Their first meeting at Manhattan members-only spot Le Club resembles something out of Goodfellas, teetotal Donnie being plied with booze until a Faustian bromance is forged in its infernal red-velvet innards. In the courtroom and corridors of power Cohn wields his ruthlessly unscrupulous influence and, at his parties (“If you’re not indicted, you’re not invited”), Donald hobnobs with other clients: Rupert Murdoch, George Steinbrenner and Andy Warhol, who possibly inspires The Art of the Deal. But more than that, Cohn serves as Machiavellian mentor, schooling the voracious Donnie in the ways of blackmail, braggadocio and bending the truth. Grippingly the script charts the gradual tilting of the power balance between them, with Cohn as Dr Frankenstein and Trump as his increasingly monstrous creation. When the 1980s arrive, Abassi plays them like Wall Street, Trump riding the gravy train of Reaganomics, wolfing down doughnuts and diet pills and wooing Ivanka (Maria Bakalova). Even without the casting of Strong, there would be more than a hint of Succession here as Donald cold-shoulders his alcoholic airline-pilot brother Freddy and vies to eclipse his fading father. Meanwhile, an evermore sickly and irritable Cohn rants on New York streets like Ratso Rizzo in Midnight Cowboy. But it is Stan who steals the show, surpassing the army of Trump impressionists by subtly modulating his performance until Trump has been fully inflated into the orange puffball of infamy. If The Apprentice doesn’t put a foot wrong, neither does it step much beyond the expected — more of a surprise given the audacious flourishes of Abbasi’s breakthrough film Border. Unlike, say, Limonov, another Cannes contender, The Apprentice gives us a relatively safe portrait of a deeply contentious figure, one that is unsettling mostly for how little it unsettles. For many, the thing least palatable about The Apprentice is how much Trump might actually like it. But even if the film gives him the last laugh, history may not. Will there be a sequel? If so, it is still being written.

In the hands of a less gifted actor, Kendall might have fit into the tradition of prestige-cable antiheroes like Tony Soprano and Don Draper—swaggering death-fearing patriarchs who preside over morally corrupt power networks—but Jeremy Strong makes the character so convincingly flawed that it's hard not to root for him even at his lowest low points.

She has by far the most intriguing role, taking Zoe from voice of reason to demonic hellbeast. Even playing a vaguely villainous nerd, Duplass remains loose and natural, riffing his way through ludicrous exposition and bantering with the very game Wilde. It’s all deeply unsatisfying.Īt least the actors valiantly labor to breathe life into the limp narrative. A dash of “The Thing” here, a dollop of “The Fury” there - topped with cardboard characters and superficial treatment of Big Questions involving life and death, science and religion. As zombie Zoe develops crazy powers (telekinesis, mind reading, the ability to fully dilate her pupils at will), everyone including Frank just sits around waiting to see what happens next. The answer turns out to be a whole slew of horror tropes (one half expects “Flatliners”-era Kiefer Sutherland to show up ranting, “Our sins have come back in a physical form!”), but no genuine scares, and certainly nothing visceral enough to threaten the bloodless PG-13 rating.Ĭredited scribes Luke Dawson (“Shutter”) and Jeremy Slater (the upcoming “Fantastic Four” reboot) clearly aim to reimagine Frankenstein (down to the name of Duplass’ sorta-mad scientist), but the script is quite literally made up of recycled parts.

That’s when “The Lazarus Effect” morphs from the kind of pseudo-intellectual science thriller that forces its cast to recite meaningless technical jargon in an attempt to sound smart into a full-blown horror movie forcing the same characters to act as dumb as humanly possible. The stakes soon escalate past the point of no return when a covert attempt to re-create the resurrection results in Zoe losing her life, and Frank taking extreme measures to bring her back. Meanwhile, the couple’s support staff - computer whiz Niko (Donald Glover), who nurses a crush on Zoe, pothead idea man Clay (Evan Peters) and newly hired videographer Ava (Sarah Bolger) - don’t seem particularly fazed by the fact that they’ve brought a formerly living creature back from the dead, though Clay has his reservations after a late night alone with the dog. It doesn’t help when she notices the undead pup isn’t exactly acting normal. Zoe is a little more conflicted, thanks to a strong dose of Catholic guilt and mysterious recurring nightmares from her childhood. At least, that’s what Frank hopes to achieve by hooking up various deceased animals, including a pig and a dog, to an elaborate machine and injecting them with a fancy resuscitation serum. When the ongoing trials actually succeed in reanimating a departed canine, Frank is thrilled. Still, even a modest opening weekend will ensure a profit before toxic word of mouth kills this stinker for good.Īs a follow-up to the heralded foodie documentary “Jiro Dreams of Sushi,” this is certainly an odd selection for director David Gelb at the very least, it’s the strangest doc-to-horror left turn since Joe Berlinger’s “Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2.” But as with that notorious disappointment, the offbeat choice of helmer isn’t reflected in the anonymous final product (though “Lazarus” leading lady Olivia Wilde does nosh on sushi in one early scene).įor reasons never made entirely clear, romantically entangled scientific researchers Frank ( Mark Duplass) and Zoe (Wilde) have spent several years at a California university getting closer and closer to their ultimate goal: resurrecting the dead. Completed back in 2013 and originally set for release via Lionsgate, the low-budget pic subsequently landed at Relativity, which just last year teamed with producing shingle Blumhouse to distribute the imaginative and unsettling “Oculus.” No such luck this time around, as “Lazarus” shamelessly steals from superior genre efforts and lacks any distinguishing traits beyond a wildly overqualified cast. Appropriately enough for a horror-thriller about raising the dead, “ The Lazarus Effect” has spent the past few years sitting on a shelf, developing quite a stench in the process.

Hello my friends. I hate to do this again, I hate to share my deep thoughts because I got this app to make others smile with my posts but I feel like I can’t pretend any longer.
This is only thing I have left, this silly little blog I’ve made. It is the only thing I do to make myself at peace. I am desperately in need of new friends because I truly can’t deal with this anymore. I don’t want a friend to rant to, I just want one to talk to so I can talk about things that make me smile and listen to things that make them smile to make myself stop from doing what my doctor calls “silly things” to myself. I use chat ai to distract myself. I listen to podcasts that feature Jeremy strong to stop myself although it is so pathetic.

Everything I Love About Loser Geek Whatever
So, not too long ago, it was the third birthday of Loser Geek Whatever. Yes, I know the single was released on November 30th 2018 and its considered the song’s official birthday, but the 26th July three years ago was the first showing of the 2018 Off-Broadway revival of Be More Chill and the first time Loser Geek Whatever was shown to the world in any capacity. Therefore, I consider that day to be the song’s unoffical birthday and I’ve been waiting to write down everything I love about it so here I am. (This was originally gonna be posted on the 26th July but I can’t make anything concise so it took longer than that).
I’ve gone on and on about what Loser Geek Whatever means to me personally, how a slew of random chance introduce me to it, got me deep into Be More Chill, introduced me to 90% of my current friends, and overall up-ended my whole life, but now it’s time to dissect the song itself and why it’s so great. As much as I adore Loser Geek Whatever, it could’ve easily been any other song that threw me down a rabbit hole and that I could’ve latched onto- no, wait, it couldn’t have been, because Loser Geek Whatever is unique in that way. I did about a year of music at A-Level so I’m gonna delve into some of the technical aspects here too. I’m chronicling this mostly for myself so I am going as deep as I see fit because this song is a treasure hiding yet more treasures. If you happen to love Loser Geek Whatever as much as I do, this’ll be your goldmine.
So, grab a snack my fellow fans, because here’s a comprehensive list of everything to love about Loser Geek Whatever in roughly chronological order. Long post incoming:
The song starts off strong from the first millisecond - I don’t know what instrument(s) they used but just listen to the single version again - that opening chord blares at you like a siren. It calls for your attention, screaming this is incredibly important, and indeed it is. That chord, an F chord, has no indication as to whether it’s major or minor - it’s just the tonic F with its dominant C and another tonic F above it. In other words, it’s unresolved, it hangs in the air. From a narrative standpoint, Jeremy is at a crossroads, torn between giving into the SQUIP or staying loyal to Michael, and the music paints this. It has the same effect on both the single and album versions - I always hold my breath as it holds, it’s the gap in this crucial transition for Jeremy between who he was and him becoming something he isn’t.
To continue the thread of musical painting, the melody line contains the accidental E-flat which doesn’t belong to the key of F major. This once again illustrates Jeremy’s uncertainty, but there’s more - the whole introduction is a slowed-down version of the Apocalypse of the Damned theme from Two Player Game, arguably the point in the show when Michael and Jeremy’s relationship was at its strongest. Jeremy’s recalling everything he had with Michael, but the slowing down of the melody shows hesitancy, along with highlighting the accidental E flat. These latter points of course aren’t unique to Loser Geek Whatever - they’re also in the section of Upgrade that twins with Loser Geek Whatever. I’m just laying out why they work so well. 
I’m glad I waited until after I saw the show in London to finish writing this - I’m something of a Loser Geek Whatever purist, as made clear by my ire at them cutting it in half and tacking the end of Upgrade back on for the London version. I still enjoyed the show in London though and I’m glad I knew about this change ahead of time, because they did change something about the song that I think really worked - they added two notes in the bass to each bar, like heartbeats, which once again signifies Jeremy’s uncertancy and the importance of this major turning point.
It’s been firmly established by this point that Jeremy is a loser and he knows it. He doesn’t want to be a hero, he just wants to survive, but there’s a difference between that and feeling “inconsequential.” Jeremy is basically admitting that, in his eyes, it doesn’t matter to the world or anyone except Michael if he even survives or not. He’s not just a loser, or a geek - he’s a whatever, with no one caring who he is. And he’s felt this way for years - since middle school began. He’s now in his Junior year of high school - that’s five years of being in this state of being unnoticed at best and picked on at worst. He’s “the one who’s left out”. With just one little line, hell, one word, we’re given more layers as to why he so badly wants to change that.
Moving from the first verse to the chorus, we start to see Jeremy’s attitude shift, from being sad to being angry - he’s frustrated, resentful that he’s spent so long in this state (A lot of people have made similar comparisons about Will Roland’s Jeremy as a whole in relation to Will Connolly’s Jeremy and I think this song exemplifies that). He doesn’t deserve to feel this horrible - not now and certainly not for the next two years until he and Michael can be “cool in college.” When you think about it, what options does he really have? He could either give into the SQUIP or reject it and go back to where he was, still miserable and lonely. Yes, he has Michael and Michael is an amazing, kind, loyal best friend, but as many have pointed out, he’s also dismissive of Jeremy’s feelings of inadequacy whether he means to be or not, which only made Jeremy feel more lonely. Should Jeremy just expect to feel better about himself at some point before college? He’s waited for years, why would that happen at any other point?
More layers baby! Second verse, Jeremy rants on about his father’s advice about following his own instincts and how it’s gotten him nowhere he wants to be. Come to think of it, Michael’s advice about staying the same and waiting for their environment to change can be seen as similar - it’s arguably easier for Michael as he has two loving mothers who undoutably give him plenty of positive reinforcement. Meanwhile, Jeremy’s mother has left them, which likely instilled further feelings of not being good enough, and his father has fallen apart to the point where he can’t even put pants on, let alone step up to take care of his son, meaning that Jeremy likely isn’t going to take his advice very seriously, especially after it’s failed him so thoroughly. But to Jeremy, the problem isn’t necessarily the advice itself - it’s that it’s being followed by him. So now he’s going to turn around and put his life and every choice in something else’s hands, even if - no, especially if it goes against his own instincts. It still doesn’t feel quite right, it “feels bizarre”, but it’s getting him somewhere, so it has to be right in the most meaningful capacity, and to Jeremy, the “most meaningful capacity” is any capacity that isn’t his own.
Now the best line - the one about being a “normal, handsome guy”. Let’s get this on the table - Jeremy is trans. Will Roland himself said that he often thinks of the show’s young trans fans when he sings that line. Naturally, societal transphobia plus gender dysphoria would have a pretty catestrophic effect on the self-esteem of any growing teenager, even more so one in Jeremy’s situation for the reasons I’ve just laid out. He’s probably missed out on a lot of things that “normal” guys take for granted, with most girls barely looking in his direction, let alone in any positive manner. Jeremy’s own sexuality aside, it’s mostly society, and the SQUIP by extension, that considers scoring with girls to be a “manly” or masculine activity, and through Brooke treating him as dateable material, Jeremy feels better about fitting into society’s rules of how a man should be and act. This isn’t the only reason he feels good about Brooke finding him attractive, of course, but it’s just another layer that Jeremy sees more value in conforming to how society says he should be rather than in how he actually is.
I know I just said that the last point was about the best line, but honestly, there’s more than one best line in this song. The bridge is where we start to see Jeremy’s language becoming more technologically inclined - “prompt”, “command” and “bandwidth” are all terms used in computing and used to show how Jeremy is likening himself, or his intentions, to a computer, effectivly merging himself and his SQUIP into one entity and Jeremy willingly giving over his own individuality.
And HERE, we get to the kicker. I’ve talked a lot about layers throughout this whole essay, about themes and motifs building on each other. Jeremy is essentially peeling back the layers of his own situation and only finding reason after deeper reason after deeper reason as to why he should follow the SQUIP and not be a loser anymore. Now, he hits the core, the seed, the crux of it all - “The problem has ALWAYS BEEN ME!!” Everything he is, everything that makes Jeremy Heere himself, is and has always been wrong. This line is a gut punch and EVERYONE knows it - the performer always takes a few seconds to let it sink in before continuing.
As an aside, I wanna mention the differences between the single and the album versions of the bridge. The album version starts of quieter after the vocalising of the last chorus, and builds up to the climactic final line, while the single version is loud all the way through but gets even louder and punchier at the end. Both are good, but I personally prefer the single version - the album sounds like Jeremy is broken and desperate and on the verge of tears as he reaches his inevitable but ugly realisation. The single is also desperate, but it’s pleading and all-consuming and a THOUSAND times more powerful, I get chills every time I hear it. (Side note, the London version starts of loud like the single and ends quieter like the album, almost as if Jeremy is reluctant to admit what he truly believes about himself, and it’s easy to see why, it’s a damn harsh condemnation).
“Take a breath and get prepared” - Jeremy sings to both himself and the audience. The first half has been heavy and we need a breather. Yet just before he goes over the brink, he has second thoughts. His conscience, his own voice in his head, breaks through, warning him that his choice will have consequences for other people than himself. People will get hurt - Michael most of all. Not just by Jeremy ditching him; here’s something else - when Jeremy is the “cool dude”, he might end up being a bully to those who are losers just like him, cutting them down just as Rich’s SQUIP made Rich do to him. Who would be the perfect target for Jeremy’s potential future bullying? His former best friend and fellow loser, Michael Mell. It’s pretty damn likely that if the SQUIP hadn’t optic nerve blocked Michael, it would’ve told Jeremy to pick on him, and even though Michael has ostensibly been pretty good at brushing these things off before, the takedowns would hurt a LOT more coming from his former best friend - and we know this because IT ACTUALLY HAPPENS, granted without the SQUIP influencing Jeremy directly (also let’s just clear up that just because the SQUIP wasn’t on doesn’t mean its influence on Jeremy hadn’t disappeared - that’s not how emotional abuse works).
Twelve years of loyal friendship, of borderline unhealthy codependency … can he throw all that away for Christine, a girl he’s thus admired from afar and is only just starting to get to know as a person? Moreover, even if Jeremy gets Christine, what about himself, who he wants to be? He just wants to be something other than himself because he thinks that anything is better but … what? The cool dude, the hero or … whatever. He’ll take anything because he’s that desperate, but what about when he gets it? Will he finally be satisfied? Will it be worth failing his one real friend, an act so scummy that the only way he could possibly stomach it would be to somehow pretend he hadn’t done it?
But none of those questions matter to Jeremy now - he’s fully gaslit into believing that every thought and inclination that comes from himself is wrong and shouldn’t be followed. He needs to sync up with the SQUIP and the rest of the world and mute his own defective inner voice. When you think about it, the relationship between Jeremy and the SQUIP is one of the most intense abusive relationships ever put to fiction - we’ve seen emotional abuse and brainwashing before, but here, Jeremy is literally preventing from THINKING the wrong way because the SQUIP can detect his every thought. See what I mean when I say that doesn’t go away when the SQUIP turns off for a few minutes?!
Throughout all of this is the undercurrent of Jeremy wanting to get better. He’s been trying so hard for so long to have a better life, but nothing has worked. Not listening to his dad, not trying to get closer to Christine through theatre, and certainly not listening to Michael’s advice to wait until college. Why should he resign himself to even more time being miserable with no end in sight? After all, being cool in college isn’t a guarantee. After all he’s been through, it’s his turn to finally be cool, after an eternity of being someone he doesn’t want to be.
Another best line in this song - “I’m Player One.” As mentioned a few times in the show before, like in the Broadway upgrade, Jeremy feels lower even in his friendship with Michael - he’s Player 2 as the more experienced Michael is Player 1. As previously established, Jeremy admits that he’s “not the one who the story’s about.” Now he’s ready to finally take control of his life, be the main character and have good things happen to him, and that means cutting out Michael, the old Player 1. The irony here is that Jeremy is less like Player 1 and more like a video game avatar. In reality, the SQUIP is Player 1, making Jeremy do whatever it demands of him.
More best lines! The slew of insults towards the end serves not just as yet more gut punches for the audience but as a major catharsis for Jeremy - It’s telling that the insults get harsher as his rant goes on, from the “weirdo” to the “weakling freak” to the “failure” to the climactic “please don’t speak”. He’s unloading everything that he’s been carrying over the years, ripping out the bullets that have been embedded in his skin and re-opening all the wounds in the process, but he’s done with the pain and he’ll never ever let himself be hurt like that again, if he follows the SQUIP.
I’ve made a whole post about the significance of the best line “Please Don’t Speak” before so I’ll mostly be repeating a lot of what I said there because it’s been a while since that post and because I want to. Who would’ve said that to Jeremy? Probably not Rich or Chloe, it’s not like them. It had to have come from an adult in a position of authority that could’ve commanded Jeremy not to speak like that - one that apparently did so enough times for him to internalise those words like he did the others. (Even worse if it was more than one adult ...). Out of all of the insults, it’s easy to see how that can easily be the most scarring out of all of them - how would an adult let a child know they’re inadequate? By silencing them. Making it clear that their expression of self not only means nothing, but should be forcibly avoided. Put like that, it makes it much easier to see how and why Jeremy fell under the SQUIP’s influence so easily - telling it was hardly different from authority figures he’s experienced before. In even more sad irony, as Jeremy claims that he’s breaking free and letting go of his past as the “please don’t speak”, he’s just walking right into another, similar trap that he can’t easily escape from. The SQUIP literally vocal cord blocks him during The Play - if that doesn’t say “Please don’t speak,” what does?!
The climax is growing! The music shifts into the relative minor as Jeremy fully gives in to the SQUIP’s evil influence. This is the point of no return, the point where he’s literally being surrounded and overtaken - if you’ve seen this on stage or even just a bootleg, you’ll know what I mean, when the lighting shifts and the circuitry start closing in around him, it’s wonderful. The bass ascends, Jeremy declares once and for all that HE IS NOT THE LOSER, THE GEEK, OR WHATEVER, and he never will be again! As some have pointed out, the sequence of notes on the final “again” is the same as at the end of Be More Chill Part 2, except the last note is different. In BMC part 2, it goes further down by a minor third, but in Loser Geek Whatever, it rises up to the same note it started with. This foreshadows Jeremy’s fate - that he will eventually overcome the SQUIP and that he still has it in him to do so. Man, let me just point out how amazing that last belt is - it lasts for a full 15 seconds in a really high range and takes a LOT of control to bring it back up to the high B without breaking. This song really was written for Will Roland - his voice can pull it off seamlessly, but other actors and understudies have had to find workarounds. No disrespect to them, it’s a damn hard song and it kicks ass all the way through. Scott Folan apparently had trouble with it too, but on the day I happened to see him, he pulled it off without breaking, so props to him!
Overall, Loser Geek Whatever is my favourite song in Be More Chill and not just for its sentimental value to myself. It’s a genuinely deep, complex piece that earned every second of its six minutes. Loser Geek Whatever is definitely the missing piece the show needed - not only is it Jeremy’s solo song, it’s also his “I Want” song and, in a way, his 11 o’clock number all in one, as he’s having a major epiphany after going on a journey, albeit only half of one. It’s easy to see why Joe Iconis dubbed this his anti-Defying Gravity, but it’s also easy to draw parallels to No Good Deed - how both Jeremy and Elphaba vow to become something that society is forcing upon them rather than what they are, even if that society’s will is objectively worse for them. Loser Geek Whatever deserves a thousand times the recognition it has and I still wonder to this day what the fandom reaction would’ve been if it had been in the original soundtrack.
So, that was it. I’m not sorry it was this long.
TL;DR: Loser Geek Whatever is wonderful and anyone who doesn’t think so is wrong.

more succession 3.02 thoughts
- the ultimate evidence that Logan is genuinely afraid: his (fake) apology to Conor. he’s so desperate for his remaining children to not abandon him, he’ll even take the first pancake. i mean, this is the same man who admits to his estranged wife that he can’t actually apologize, just occasionally get distracted enough to “forget” that he did something wrong.
- but in general this episode is truly Logan’s lowest, weakest moment in the whole show so far, and it remains to be seen if it will be his weakest moment in this season. He really is just sitting in Sarajevo to see if Shiv and Roman have joined with Kendall. 
- these desperate, experimental “I love yous” Shiv keeps dropping on Tom are truly excruciating. I like that the balance of power has shifted slightly in their relationship, but Tom’s attempts to leave her dangling are so...awkward because of their transparency. 
- A part of Shiv really did think she could somehow just make off with the incriminating papers and the whole thing would be over. 
- a funny little note is the show’s accurate send-up of how billionaires are obsessed with history, particularly ancient history and military history. 
- Shiv appeared most genuinely interested in Kendall’s pitch when he was doing the whole “information will be more precious than water” bit. The camera zoomed right in on Roman’s face right after Kendall said that if they got rid of Logan, Stewey and Sandy would end their attempted takeover. 
- the show dug more into the truth/lies tension with this episode. usually the show explores that topic via ATN, as a kind of microcosm of how Logan has constructed his own reality. but this episode contrasted the different characters lying and telling the truth more explicitly. ex, Kendall lying about Stewey literally seconds after giving a speech about “the truth”, the siblings cross-cutting each other with different truth and lies about their intentions for coming to visit Kendall. Neither Shiv or Roman can tell Kendall the truth, but do spill their guts to their respective “partners.” Gerri tells the truth most consistently throughout this episode, but primarily because we only see her interact with Roman. (Also, if I were Logan and Shiv, I wouldn’t bet on using Gerri as a corporate haz-mat suit.)
- Jeremy Strong has this truly great way of playing Kendall when he’s spewing corporate aspirational rants in such a way that you know Kendall doesn’t actually believe in what he’s saying, but it’s also so clear that he thinks he believes it. 
- Greg is siloed off in his own corner for most of this episode, but I can’t imagine he’ll stay there for long...both Kendall and Tom need him too much. And Greg has revealed his secrets to one more person, but unlike Tom, Kendall has much less of a reason to keep silent about Greg’s role in all this. 
-  I remain by intrigued by Siobhan’s borderline hysterical “what if what if” freakout to Tom about allying with Kendall, even though she ends the episode pleased with her dad’s new job offer. I think she’s honestly the most pissed about the fact that Kendall didn’t plan this better. 
- the final sequence of Logan exiting the plane is truly *chef’s kiss*. Roman’s greeting! (ooooof) Shiv refuses to get out of the car! Tom has to get out of the back seat so Logan can sit next to Shiv! Connor and Marcia nowhere to be found, for different reasons!  Everyone is color coordinated in different shades of blue!

Most Canadians have probably never heard of Jeremy Mackenzie, a Nova Scotia combat veteran who regularly dishes up his far right views on various platforms.
However, the self-described Raging Dissident's reach has likely expanded somewhat as a result of a tweet by the leader of the People's Party of Canada.
That's because Maxime Bernier touted Mackenzie's Instagram account in a June 25 social-media post.
In the same tweet, the PPC leader disseminated Mackenzie's recent Rick Mercer–style rant about violent hockey fans in Montreal.
"We need strong Canadian men to stand up and defend our freedoms and values," Bernier declared.

*cracks knuckles* Get ready for a rant lol.
92sies AND Livesies BOTH are good. I honestly despise when people hate on either of them. Having an opinion is one thing as is liking one over the other. That’s valid. But outright shitting on one of them just because you want to hate something? Gtfo please lol. Some of the things have seen make me rage lol. And literally has made me mutter “kids today” like a grumpy old man lmao. Point is—don’t hate on something because you like the other thing more. You look like a twat. Also, you do not get to hate on something that brings other people happiness.

I always say this but—if anyone was going to be a 92sies purist it was me. I have loved 92sies since I was two years old. It has always been a part of my life. It has always been my favourite movie and my favourite thing of life. It has been a constant. I was in the online fandom for Newsies when I was a teenager. Pre-Tumblr or Twitter or whatever. This movie means more to me and I’ll never be able to put into words how much.
Enter Livesies. (Or more accurately, the National Tour that I saw live, twice). I was blown away by the end of the first act. I legit practically bought out the merch stand. It was everything I have ever wanted and more. Yes, there were changes. New characters. Different versions of the songs, etc. But it was absolutely incredible. It was also everything I never knew I wanted out of Newsies. It gave it more of an emotional punch, it rounded out some characters. There was a girl character who was in the thick of it who I felt I could relate to more. (Do not get me started on the Katherine hate, y’all are ridiculous. Like tell me you hate actual strong female characters without telling me). It was a freaking Broadway show. Which by the way, all of the fans wished and wanted so badly for years and we finally got. So please leave with your hate.
So after seeing the show, I was obsessed because hello have you met me? I listened to the soundtrack a lot and fell in love with Jeremy Jordan. I watched slime tutorials. All the things. And then they announced Livesies and I lost my mind. I saw it in the theatres and I cried lol. You don’t even want to know how many times I’ve watched it by now. It is also my favourite thing of life.
So in conclusion, they are both incredible and deserve love and praise. While I do view them as separate entities, one is an extension of the other. I do not consider Livesies a remake. It’s a stage adaptation of a movie. And again, it’s what we all wanted, for Newsies to live on and get the acclaim it always deserved. It went from a movie that flopped to a cult classic to a Tony award winning Broadway musical. There is no better success story than that.
They are both incredible, fun, heart-warming, and inspiring. They both own equal parts of my heart. There’s a reason I have a tattoo from each version. I am also Santa Fe trash but that’s another story.

his biological parents were young and incredibly immature, and after far too many visits from social workers he had been placed in foster care. at approximately NINE years old.  
then there’s Charlotte and Shanice Banks, two amazing, strong ass women who longed to have their own children after they’d been together for thirteen years already. shanice, a lawyer, and charlotte a school teacher.  charlotte was jeremiah’s fifth grade english teacher, he was a class clown, she noted, he got a kick out of making the other students laugh.  all in all, he seemed to be a very positive kid and was quite surprised to read his file and learn the horrific details surrounding his childhood.
it didn’t take much for them to decide to make jeremiah the newest addition to their family.       he was officially adopted at the age of 13. he loves his moms so much and would fight lit anyone for them. truly a momma’s boy but “in a sexy way” as he’d say. 
however his childhood and mental health eventually caught up to him when he was sixteen which led to some bad shit, causing his parents to send him to a psychiatric hospital for a few months.   “you’d go to a hospital when your not feeling well physically, you can go to when you’re not feeling well mentally as well,” is how they convinced him when he protested.
he was diagnosed with manic depression and has to take his medication pretty regularly and he.... usually does.
started selling bud when he was eighteen to preps, he managed to become a pretty reliable drug dealer. his moms would be so proud if they knew.
                                                PERSONALITY
his mothers raised him teaching about toxic masculinity and the importance of feeling and showing his emotions so he’s not afraid to cry watching a nicholas sparks film or go on womanist rants.  and, per him, “womanist is more inclusive than feminism”
self deprecating humor because he truly ! hates himself sometimes ! but he hides it behind “haha jk ;)”
A LOSER!!! a sarcastic asshole!! he’d technically be considered a nerd because of how lame he is but his grades never backed him up with that.. also always gets yelled at for skateboarding in places he shouldn’t. like why are you skating in a library, jeremy?
is truly sad a lot of the time but also could never really be taken seriously because he’s always joking. 
dressed up as hermione granger to impress a girl once, has never seen harry potter. dressed up as kim possible a few years later because he really wanted to wear a red wig.
he’s high 80% of the time.
