50 years ago yesterday, Ray Parker Jr. and I were in the same room… well, it was Madison Square Garden, he was 18, playing with Little Stevie Wonder, who was opening for The Stones, and, it was Mick’s birthday. That’s some cool shared history… I, a  mere speck in the story am claiming my seat. Today was not quite so historic, yet any time in Ray’s company is a huge treat. Add IIFC Award-Winning Filmmaker, Fran Strine to the mix, whose documentary, Who You Gonna Call, about Ray, just dropped, and well, it gets even more special. 

We talked about how they met on Fran’s previous doc, Hired Gun, which also featured Ray, and where the idea for WYGC was borne. Ray’s story was just too big to not tell. Known internationally, cross-generation for Ghostbusters, there’s so much more to the story. Growing up in Detroit, police brutality firsthand, playing the clarinet and the sax, how he got his first guitar, and his 10,000 hours before he hit 13 when he had his first big gig with The Spinners. Crazy. Barry White, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Gladys Knight, and Bill Withers, followed, while he was still a kid. How Stevie changed his life, how his mother motivated him, moving to LA, doing his own thing, getting no credit for his Grammy-winning #1 You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, Raydio, his hit, Jack and Jill, to Ghostbusters––a last minute do or don’t get paid stroke of genius. This story is at the heart of Who You Gonna Call, but like Grammy-Winning Hollywood Walk of Famer Ray, there’s so much more to the story. I loved the doc and this time with these two exceedingly talented and charming men.

More redesigns! More redesigns! This time it's the whole Fenton family! As always, my notes will be under the cut. I really appreciate everyone's support and feedback about this series. I decided to update my Danny Phantom redesign. Now it's even LESS animation friendly. Not that I was going for an animation friendly design to begin really I just think it's funny how with every new iteration of Danny I draw there's always one or two more things added.

I'm really proud of how these turned out and I think he actually looks 14 for once. I think before I was kinda close, but he looked more 16 or 17 to me. I'll go more into my design choices under the cut so this post isn't a mile long.

Thrilled to sit down again with Grammy Award Winner, Ray Parker Jr. and IIFC Award-Winning Filmmaker, Fran Strine, in support of their recently dropped doc, Who You Gonna Call. I LOVED it.

It seems everyone in the world, cross-generation, knows that Ray penned and recorded Ghostbusters, did you know that as a teen he toured with Little Stevie Wonder opening for The Stones? Crazy. Crazier, I was there at MSG in ’72. Ray went on to work with Barry White, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, for Christ's sake, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Boz Scaggs, The Temptations, ... and then did a little GhostBusting. Love this proud Detroit'er, who’s honored with a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame. 

I met Fran Strine at the premiere of his last film, Hired Gun. There as a guest of old pal Liberty DeVitto, who’s featured in the film, the documentary brought to light untold stories behind some of the greatest session and touring musicians who are rarely acknowledged for their contributions, despite their roles in creating and performing the most popular music of our time. The film also features interviews with Stevie Wonder, Steve Lukather, Jay Graydon, Clive Davis, David Foster, Lee Ritenour, Boz Scaggs, Herbie Hancock, and Ray Parker Jr. along with Ivan Reitman, who produced Ghostbusters. Fran killed this one, too. 

Time to talk music, movies, that iconic Ghostbusting flick, and the incredible doc, Who You Gonna Call, that these two created.

Grateful as hell they’ll be paying us a call.

Véronique Sanson - Hollywood (Elektra - 1977)

J'aurais mis beaucoup, beaucoup de temps à m'intéresser à Véronique Sanson, l'associant pendant très longtemps, malgré son style de vie très rock'n'roll et sa liaison avec Stephen Stills, à la variétoche française. Rien de déshonorant mais ce n'était juste pas non truc. Il a fallu en fait que je tombe sur le remix de Bernard's Song par la Funky French League pour que je me dise que sa discographie méritait peut-être d'être explorée. En fait, à part l'album Hollywood, rien ne m'a vraiment plu. Par contre Hollywood s'avère être un très bon disque. Enregistré en Californie, avec la complicité d'Alain Chamfort, Hollywood bénéficie d'un casting cinq étoiles avec la crème des musiciens de studio dont Harvey Mason (batterie) et Ray Parker Jr (guitare) (rien qu'à voir les photos sur la pochette, on comprend que ça ne rigolait pas du tout en studio). Le tout donne un résultat emballant. Alors certes, Bernard's Song (Il N'est de Nulle Part) se distingue nettement comme le sommet de l'album et confirme être l'un des meilleurs morceaux de funk français jamais écrits. Mais le reste, quoique un ton en dessous, est de très bon niveau. Le disque s'étant vendu à 200 000 exemplaire en France, il est loin d'être rare et vous pouvez l'acheter les yeux fermés dès que vous tomberez dessus en brocante.
