Israeli president Isaac Herzog insisted that “an entire nation” was to blame for Hamas’s actions, and that the idea of “civilians not being aware, not involved” was “absolutely not true”. While Rageh Omar reported on this for ITV News, it did not make the BBC or the New York Times or Sky News. Nor did it make most anglophone outlets. Ariel Kallner, in a now-deleted tweet, called for another Nakba on the Palestinians, repeating the crime of 1948 in which 700,000 Palestinians were ethnically cleansed. “Right now, one goal: Nakba!” He exhorted. “A Nakba that will overshadow the Nakba of 48.” This was picked up by Associated Press but missed by most anglophone broadcasters and press. When Tally Gotliv, a Knesset member for Likud, called for a nuclear strike on Gaza – “Jericho Missile! … Doomsday weapon!” – and for “crushing and flattening Gaza … Without mercy! Without mercy!”, this also went curiously unnoticed. Again, when an anonymous Israeli defence official briefed Israeli broadcasters that Gaza would become “a city of tents” where “there will be no buildings”, it was largely ignored. When Sara Netanyahu’s advisor, Tzipi Navon, said that it would not be enough to “flatten Gaza”, and that Palestinians suspected of involvement in the Hamas attack should have their nails pulled out, their genitals removed and their tongues and eyes saved for last “so we can enjoy his screams”, “so he can see us smiling”, that too was curiously overlooked. The studied obtuseness of Western media includes carefully ignoring the most severe warnings about what is about to be done by Israel to Gaza. On Friday 13th, Israel ordered residents in the north of Gaza to “evacuate” to the south within 24 hours on pain of being bombed. Former Israeli ambassador Danny Ayalon suggested with a cynical smirk that they could go to the Sinai desert and live in “tent cities”. The Biden administration appears determined to enable this to happen, lobbying Egypt to take the refugee population. The language of evacuation, widely used by newspapers, was euphemistic. Over a million Gazans had just been given a death threat. They were being told at gunpoint to flee in an unrealistic amount of time, on just two roads that they were assured were safe from bombardment, only for a convoy fleeing south to be bombed, killing seventy people. They had no reason to believe they could ever return to their homes or that their homes would even exist. Here was the second Nakba that Ariel Kallner shouted for. A UN press release warned of “mass ethnic cleansing”, that would repeat the Nakba of 1948 “yet on a larger scale”. Two days after that warning, only the Independent among British newspapers had covered it. One honourable exception to the general omerta on explaining what the “expulsion” order means is the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire who, interviewing former Israeli ambassador Mark Regev, quoted former UN head of humanitarian affairs Jan Egeland, saying: “The Israeli order for civilians to move from north to south is impossible and illegal. It amounts to forcible transfers and a war crime.” No anglophone newspaper, of course, mentions the word “genocide” in this context, though that is the term used by both Palestinians and Jewish groups opposed to Israel’s war, and is clearly what is implied by Israeli statements and actions. As Mustafa Bhargouti told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Israel is inflicting the triumvirate of “siege and collective punishment”, “genocide” through bombardment, and “ethnic cleansing”. The Israeli historian of the Holocaust, Raz Segal, describes Israel’s indiscriminate war on Gazan civilians and its assault on the conditions for life for the whole community, as “a textbook case of genocide” unfolding in front of us. For the press and the majority of pundits, the problem cannot be named. At most, liberal dissent attains to the insight that vengeance is not justice, as though what Israel is now threatening is merely reactive rather than programmatic.

God. Zionists are literally flooding the Palestine tag. Disgusting.

This isn’t a “religious conflict.” It is settler-colonialist violence against oppressed people— Palestinians. To depict it as an antisemetic religious conflict, or even a religious one, is to obfuscate the issue at hand. There are Muslim, Christian, and Jewish Palestinians who are victims of this genocide. And the recent attacks Hamas has made against Israeli civilians and children are a culmination of Israel’s ongoing, decades-long genocide against the Palestinian people.

It is digusting to weaponize antisemitism (a very real and pervasive issue globally) and the atrocities of the Holocaust in discussions of the Israeli government’s genocide against Palestine. If you don’t believe me, you should listen to Jewish people who recognize these horrors— who see how antisemitism against Jewish people is being weaponized and misused to justify genocide.

Look to the Pro-Palestinian Jewish people who went to protest at Capitol Hill.

Listen to Raz Segal, an Israel Holocaust scholar who speaks of the genocide.

Or hell, think critically about what is happening. About what genocide-supporting lies our mainstream media is propagating. About how $105 billion dollars are being requested to fund genocide now, despite us fighting and begging our government for years to improve our own healthcare, our education, and the protections of people who do not belong to the dominant majority of the USA. Think.

semi-coherent rambling about tarot cards and symbology under the cut

SO i've been thinking about those two a lot. because those cards are good picks! and in some ways they're the obvious choices (esp. for the Lover archetype). the thing is, i haven't been able to twist the symbolism of the cards around in a way i'd like. i got my Rider-Waite deck out to check the listed meaning for the Lovers:

THE LOVERS – Attraction, love, beauty, trials overcome. Reversed: Failure, foolish designs.

the RW depiction of the Lovers card is a man and a woman in the garden of eden, and like – a lot of the deck has these allusions to Christianity, sure, but for me it places the meaning of the card a little too firmly within the bounds of a "traditional" relationship. it represents the traditional values of marriage, commitment; to me it also speaks of (coming back to the garden of eden symbolism) making choices, resisting temptation, almost coming from a place of naivety? i guess what i'm saying is, it has a lot of meaning attached that i don't think really suits the Lover.

anyway, there are definitely interesting ways to subvert that (of the cards i've done so far, i feel like the Agent as the Heirophant and Lili as the Empress are particularly notable in how they subvert or reinterpret the "original" meanings of the card), but i haven't come up with an interesting way to do so. and anyway, to me the Lover archetype is more about emotional honesty and acceptance than relationships, necessarily. it's still something i'm thinking about, but in terms of assigning him a card i'd actually probably lean more towards something from the Cups suit (which as a whole signify emotions, love; the suit that correlates to hearts in traditional playing cards)!

similarly for the Inner Child archetype; i think The Fool is a great pick for Raz, as he appears in the games. but in the context of the AU, what the archetype represents is more along the lines of reconnecting with your younger self; rediscovered innocence and joy, self-love and self-nurture, a kindness directed inwards. i'd probably place him as The Sun, which to me is a card that speaks more to those themes.

i should also say i'm not currently planning to work on those two, just because i'm still figuring out the angle that i want to approach them from! the next batch in the works (as a sneak preview to anyone who's read this far) are Bobby (The Chariot), Elka (The Hermit) and Norma (Judgement).

#probably 30% less coherent than my usual rambling because i'm still home sick with a nasty cold #yeahh i dunno. they're not bad picks but a lot of the meanings attached to the lovers card are kind of. tangential to what i'd want #the other one i was considering was The Devil for lilith & the lover #i like that one. it could have a lot of fun subversive meanings i think #anyway i'm still turning it over. got plenty of others to work on for now though
