Idk how ppl genuinely think the waifu bait megane beseker babe not even given any real character development that was intended to “break Eva” is a good ending for shinji. Like... genuinely why does he have to be with anyone in every side piece of media he’s with someone like girlfriend of steel and so on like why can’t he have a meaningful family and friends while also being confident in himself there’s ppl who want him in their lives

He doesn’t make any effort for literal years to learn to love humanity or even speak to reiq like he did in the original anime, the drafts, or the manga. No effort what so ever.

He’s just obsessed with shinji when that’s not the point of his character in fact in the drafts he rejects shinji and sets up a parallel where he isn’t comparable to Gendo. Shinji is Gendo and kaworu is Yui in the drafts. Shinji constructs his own temple of memories to the only man he ever loved (not even his father)

The reason rebuild kaworu falls flat is because reworu takes out the element that kaworu is fleeting. From the get go his character has been about struggling to survive and mercifully letting him die on his own terms with shinji there to help him not be alone when he dies

Because with Gendo in the way and seele forcing him to act he can only die he can’t make shinji happy in the long term in the way anno sets up because he is a tool at the disposal of a handful of men who don’t care that humanity is fine as it is

Because of our at fields we can protect ourselves but humans are free to change. They can deny their nature

But kaworu cant. He wants to die because it has equal value as life to him. Humans are beings trapped in bodies but angels can change their shapes

He will spit in the eye of anyone who denys him his free will.

He loves shinji because when he’s wavering shinji makes him realize that while he isn’t fully human like shinji... he can make his own choice. The utilitarian approach.

Reworu is so focused on shinji he uses shinji as a proxy for himself and how he feels. The piano room is his own temple of memories cultivated for shinji and shinji alone

You can’t be happy through others alone but reworu still tries and because of his lack of love for humanity and obsession with shinji he is the least human of the three main continuities. He cannot and will not connect with others

There isn’t a barrier to his soul he can lower or weaken. Reworu is his very own barrier he is a twisted gnarled and exposed tree root housing a wilting flower just inside
