12, 13, 14 foooor Kelp?

Thanks for asking! You don't even know Kelp yet, so let me tell you a little about him. He's my most recent DND PC, which I'm playing in a friend's homebrew game called "Shattered Moon."

He's a Runechild Sorcerer Sea Elf and I've been having the biggest brainrot about him in the past week! I wrote three fics for his past, oops, lmao. Anyway, a bit more about him under the cut (two of my fellow players follow me here, but hopefully they won't see this post. but if you do -- you know who you are -- do not read under the cut XD)

So Kelp (then called Rhodoph) was born underseas, in a small farming, traditional community surrounded by kelp forests, and his father was a shaman who taught him all about the golden coral reefs (the corals of Luetkeana) that existed where they lived (the region of Pyrifera), and that his community believed to be the remnants of the spirit of the great primordial of the oceans (Luetkeana).

To cut a long story short, Kelp gets his runes when the moon cracks, and he starts having visions of catastrophe and destruction. At the same time, a powerful underwater empire that was trying to encroach into their territory starts extracting the corals, and Kelp is certain, through his visions, that destroying the corals (besides being a religious desecration) will hasten the end of the world, so he takes up arms and leads a resistance (later a revolution) to protect the reefs and his people from the Empire.

Eventually, the empire stomps the rebellion, and Kelp ends up sold to the surface to a sadistic mage who uses him as an arcane battery (because his runes store energy) for years, until he manages to escape, kill the mage, and that's when the campaign began (we started at level 6)!

Done! Now on to the questions!

12. Is your OC self-destructive? In what ways?

Extremely, but not in a self-sabotaging or self-hating kind of way. He's self-destructive because he made up his mind to fight for the coral reefs no matter what that cost him, and his life is a small price to pay for that ecosystem to survive.

13. If you met your OC, would the two of you get along?

We would, but we probably wouldn't be friends, just friendly acquaintances. Although we are politically aligned, he's a rural "take up arms and fight" kind of guy, and I'm an academic "write stories that inspire people to learn about and admire those who take up arms and fight" kind of guy. I admire him (and people like him) more than he would admire me (because he's free of our academicist bias/our eurocentric ideas of intellectualism).

14. How does your OC want to be seen by other characters?

That's a really interesting question because most of my OCs tend to care about what other people think and how they see them, but not Kelp. Kelp honestly, truly, doesn't give a flying fuck. He's already been famous -- loved and admired and revered as a prophet by some, hated and feared and slandered as a criminal, an outlaw, a demon-pacted mass-murderer by others. None of that matters. He doesn't like having a positive public image any more than he likes a negative one -- Both can be used though, so great. As long as he knows he's fighting to protect Pyrifera and the corals, people can think whatever they will about him.

🌹 (rose) - What does your oc find attractive in other people? Are these traits found in their friends and/or romantic partners? Are they found in themselves?

Wouldn't you like to know weatherboy? 😌

I'll say this bc you already know about it thanks to a certain scene: Kelp finds athleticism and physicality hot. He likes ppl stronger than him, people who like to brawl (even tho he doesn't). He also likes people who get shit done, and people who stick it to the man. 😌

Those traits were found in Kom, and they can easily be found in Lehiri too.

🥩 (steak) - Does your oc have any coping mechanisms? Healthy or unhealthy?

The first one I can think of is meditation, which is healthy but it doesn't come as easily to him anymore after the years in the cage. Same for "talking things out with people he trusts." A little harder to do now. He even met with his father, but he couldn't quite share all the things he would have once shared.

On the unhealthy side, he has always set aside personal feelings for "the work that needs done," and he's doing that again now. Getting busy so that he doesn't have to feel much and he can weather all the difficulties he is sure to come.

🍎 (apple) - Does your oc go to school or take classes? Did they go to college? What was/is their favorite subject? Did/do they get good grades? Did/do they enjoy school?

Kelp did study, but it was a far more practical and farm oriented education than academic. There was a teacher in the village (Nori's mom) and kids had classes, but they also learned their family trades with their parents. He also read a lot on his own, and became more politically educated like that. If he went to school in a modern au his favourite subjects would be history and geography. He would get excellent grades on those, average passing grades on languages and biology, and he'd struggle like hell with maths and physics and chemistry. X.x

🐞 (ladybug) - What does a perfect day look like for your oc? What do they do? Who do they see?

A perfect day for Kelp is entirely unattainable. On a perfect day, he is in the past again. Florenz is theirs, and he can fully believe it is all for something, that fate can be trifled with. They pace around the map of Pyrifera and devise a plan to keep it independent for many years to come. Everyone is alive.

Of course he is entirely aware that this is impossible, but I think that goes hand in hand with the fact he would quickly dismiss this question with a comment along the lines of "perfection does not exist in reality. it is a concept that can only exist in the realm of the imaginary." He cannot picture a feasible perfect day.

He can picture a "good" day, though. A day in which the Hateful Six and the surviving Protectors of Luet further their goals: they learn what they need, they gather significant supplies, thwart their foes and kill more of their enemies. They all come out alive, and they all share a fulfilling meal and a have a good, distracting talk. Sof forgets about her suicide mission, Lemmiwink and Lehiri let the mantle of guilt off their shoulders for a while, Kyic and the rest of the grung kids are well taken care of. They sleep somewhere safe enough they don't have to keep an eye open. That's a good day. Perfect is impossible anyway, so he humbly wishes only for "good." 😌

If it weren't for Kombu being in that vision, today in game would have been good lol.

🧣(scarf) - What comforts your oc? Is it an item? An action? A person? Whatever it is, how any why does it comfort them?

The kids (Sof, Ribd, Leppu). Having them to watch over is comforting to Kelp. They don't have to do anything, just... Be well.

Lehiri has been comforting to him, too. So has Lemmiwink. Because both have been there and listened to him and shared some of their own woes with him too. Bonds are another source of comfort for Kelp bc he is extremely community oriented even if he is an introvert.

Being in nature is also good to center his emotions and make him feel like he belongs in this world, especially in the Luetkeana reef, but that doesn't really exist anymore so the mere thought is depressing to him. Yet, knowing that there is still some of it to save is comforting.

He also takes comfort in meditation and trance. And there was a bit of comfort to be found in Lehiri's arms, but the grief ended up getting in the way of that.

💋 (kiss) - Is your oc a good kisser? Have they kissed anyone before? Do they even enjoy kissing? What was their first kiss like in comparison to their most recent?

Kelp does certainly enjoy kissing, and I think he's a good kisser. He's had relationships before so, yea!

Hard to compare his youthful first kiss woth the last he's had. They're worlds apart.

OC Design questions for Kelp: motion, texture, change (in this case, after he became the Prophet)

motion: How does your OC move? How does their clothing help or hinder their range of motion? Are they flexible, coordinated, clumsy?

Kelp moves slowly and with intent in situations out of combat. He tends to keep his posture erect, and is well aware of his surroundings and where he stands, how close or far he is from people. His movements, his touches, they're all intentional. He doesn't accidentally brush against someone. He is decently dextrous (14 dex) and I see him as being pretty graceful if he wants to be -- definitely not clumsy. He slouches and struggles more with his posture now after the years in the cage, though. And he was unhinged and feral af in the first days and none of the above (about being very coordinated and intentional) applied. But he's past the feral phase now, lmao.

In combat he also moves with purpose, just not slowly. His spellcasting involves some swirling and spinning of his quarterstaff, which he uses as focus, and he does that pretty deftly and quickly. He's hot.

texture: Does your OC favor any specific kinds of cloth or textures? Is there anything they can't wear or don't like? What sort of fabrics do they prefer?

Kelp favors plankton silk, which was the fabric of his clothes all his life until being taken to the surface. He hasn't come in contact with many surface fabrics yet, but I don't see him enjoying wool very much. Heavy and uncomfortable. And if he went into water with it? The weight? Ugh, no.

change: Has your OC ever drastically changed their appearance? Significant haircuts, big tattoos, complete wardrobe swap, etc? Why? How do they feel about the change?

Complete wardrobe swap when he became a revolutionary, definitely. He had to get clothes that could be worn in raids and battle, so he went from wearing farm clothes to guerilla garb. As the Prophet, he also wore some adornments (shoulder pauldrons, capes, shark teeth necklaces) that gave him an air of authority, something Nori insisted he do. As you know, he doesn't particularly care for his looks, but he went along with it bc it had merit.

🍇: What sort of friend are they? Where are they in the group dynamic?

Kelp's the guy who's no fun at parties. He will join for a bit, talk about geopolitics, then sit in the corner nursing his drink and then he'll probably be gone without saying goodbye. If you're not paying attention it's easy to miss the fact he was the one to book the bar (or maybe he got someone else to make the call, but still) and tell everyone to come. He's also the friend who connects people. "Oh, you like that thing? Come over here, let me introduce you to this other person who also likes that." He's serious and can get the group back on track if they have a shared goal, and he's more than willing to request ideas and coordinate planning, make decisions and get the group going. He tends to observe everyone's strengths, drives and fears, and he tries to get to know everyone well. He's very willing to ask for help from the group, and equally ready to offer his hand. He's more likely to spend hours talking to his friends one-on-one than in gatherings. Anyone messes with him and there's probably people in the group who'd see red (on his behalf) much faster than him.

🍎: Do they share any features or traits with any family members?

Yeah! Jax found a really cool token for his dad, I loved it! And from that, you can see Rhod has his dad's red kelp hair. Alaria also had the same hair. Probably same eyecolor too. And I think both him and Alaria were raised dutiful as fuck, so yeah, they shared that. But Kelp probably takes after his mother's heigtht cuz his dad looked tall!! xD

🍰: What's something your OC counts as unforgivable?

On the individual level, nothing he could ever set in stone without context. But in a broader sense, the conscious and deliberate maintenance of parasitic structures of power and oppression by self-aggrandizing, wealth-accumulating states. And a state's disregard for its people's wellbeing as a whole. Also, forgiving is not the same as exempting from punishment or corrective action. I mean, is anyone surprised? XD

🍷: What's one of your OC's pet peeves concerning food?

:thinkies: He probably has a silly pet peeve like, the way people prepare red seabream in Cyana (and Blade Hold) might piss him off bc obviously that's just wrong (and the rest of Pyrifera are the ones who know how to prepare it right). Like, "they add syrup to their acai" type of pet peeve. XD

🍟: What does your OC admit to be their guilty pleasure? What actually is their guilty pleasure?

He might say his guilty pleasure is sugarweed, or that he doesn't have a guilty pleasure. What is his actual guilty pleasure? Wouldn't you like to know weatherboy!

8. What were they told to stop/start doing most often as a child?

His chores! Stop playing with the octopi, go feed the plankton. The sort of thing you'd expect from his upbringing .

10. What lie do they most frequently remember telling? Does it haunt them?

Plenty of lies here and there depending on what a situation needs, but no frequent or haunting one.

16. What makes their stomach turn?

Predatory exploration of people and nature; what else?

18. What embarrasses them?

There's at least one thing you know of, and one you don't, but in general not an awful lot.

20. If they were asked to explain the difference between romantic and platonic or familial love, how would they do so?

He wouldn't. He doesn't think can list aspects of these three 'forms of love' that don't overlap, or that are always true, unless you make it very sardonic and political: "romantic is what you feel for what your society largely considers a romantic partner, or for someone you wish were your partner. Platonic is what you feel for what your society largely considers a friend, and familial for what your society considers family." Which informs you nothing abt what those feelings are actually like internally -- only that they're defined by external circumstances and conventions, which are also dependent on culture. But he thinks that the feelings themselves are invariably unique to each person and relationship, and they're not that easily explained in categories.

22. How does jealousy manifest itself in them (they become possessive, they become aloof, etc)?

Wouldn't you like to know as well! 👀

27. What causes them to feel dread?

After fifteen years in a cage? So much.

30. Who do they most regret meeting?

39. How easy is it for them to ignore flaws in other people?

He's usually trying to perceive people's flaws, not ignore them.

41. How do they feel about children?

They're precious and wonderful. And they ought to be the shared responsibility of a community.

G) What trait of theirs bothers you the most?

Scowl and introversion, just bc I struggle to keep those when rping on camera. The one-track mind and his absolute inability to exist without a cause. There's more but I'll keep to myself bc it's internal stuff hehehe

H) What trait do you admire most?

His determination and commitment to his people's cause, obviously. And his ability to connect with others. I mean, I based his past actions on Zapata and Antonio Conselheiro, so there's a lot to admire there.
