SPONGEBOB SEASON 9, "KENNY THE CAT"
My TV animation career pretty much started with the SpongeBob pilot, so now and again, I like to stop by Bikini Bottom to see what’s going on. On one of those visits, about ten years ago, I storyboarded an episode called Kenny The Cat, written by my pals Zeus Cervas and Casey Alexander and produced by Paul Tibbit and Vince Waller. Guest voice by Biz Markie (RIP).
After a few inquires on Twitter, I figured I’d upload it for anyone who wants to check it out. Keep in mind that it’s an old-school storyboard that’s transitioning to digital. The panel BGs are a desaturated yellow because we used to draw on Post-It notes and I found it comforting.
Tumblr media
You’ll see on the boards some animation and timing notes, which is a little unusual—that’s usually done during charactor layout—but because I started out as an animator I can’t help myself. Does this sometimes alienate people? Oh yes.
Although this particular episode was my first digital storyboard, I drew it traditionally: three panels to a page as we had always done on paper. It had only been a few years since Storyboard Pro came out but I didn’t have the time to learn it and also meet my deadline. Fortunately, the show hadn’t changed over to STBpro yet either, so I did the whole thing in Alias Sketchbook Pro. I really liked how simple and easy the application was to use, and I still use it a lot today.

Men In Black 2 (2002)
Tumblr media
AKA MIIB AKA Men In In Black. I think this was a date with F. and we enjoyed it as silly fun. I was very taken by my first glimpse of Rosario Dawson and I loved the pull back at the end to show how insignificant we all are like that old Louis Armstrong Guinness advert in reverse
Big Willy Smith’s obligatory single stands out as the only thing not by Danny Elfman in the soundtrack. Perhaps there’s a neuralyzer solo at the end as it’s almost instantly forgettable. Shame about the lacklustre music considering two notable cameo appearances* from talented musicians no longer with us. The first being Biz Markie as a beatboxing alien. He appeared in one more film (again with Will Smith) before his untimely death in 2021 as an uncredited funeral guest. Perhaps more notably, this film also marked the last movie appearance of Michael Jackson, playing a keen MIB applicant who’s given the runaround by Rip Torn’s Zed.
At the other end of the spectrum, Johnny Knoxville had his first movie role (aside from a few seconds of drooling in a bar in Coyote Ugly), which I liked in principle but I don’t know if his acting was quite there yet. He played both heads of a two-headed alien but he only got paid once. The thing I really wanted to see him star in wouldn’t come out until October though…
They showed a teaser trailer for The Two Towers, which was the most excited I’d been for a new film since, well, probably Spider-Man earlier that year. While on comics, I recently read the first issue of the series Men In Black was based on and they take out a cult on a mad new drug; no aliens. Apparently they don’t exclusively deal with extraterrestrials; more generic paranormal stuff. And drugs. Oh and they just kill witnesses instead of wiping memories.
*Or are they bit parts? I thought that a cameo was when an actor plays themselves but wikipedia says otherwise. Named after a carving that stands out of a gemstone, apparently a cameo is by a recognisable person who usually doesn’t speak, and a bit part has direct interaction with a principal actor and no more than 5 lines of dialogue. There you go.

Hello and welcome to episode 13 of showing off my records. This record is The Biz Never Sleeps by (The Diabolical) Biz Markie (RIP) I remember getting this record back at NSN (how’s that for a throwback). I think it was something new they had at the festival that year - it felt really niche and I really miss those days. Anyway, I love the vibe of this record as well as the packaging of this record, it’s just the picture disc in a plastic sleeve - but sometimes simplicity is the best. I love Hip Hop but all eras, but I feel like Golden Age Hip Hop is a fun and easy going era and in a way - Lil Yachty and Kyle feels like a nice return to that era. IG it annoys me where everything needs to be super serious with an edge. Also a great duo from that era; DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince https://www.instagram.com/p/CiTRaUfp166lnpPn7L25aD0LCHb2Lmi6Y6cDpA0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Funk Flex Calls Out Juelz Santana "We Want The Music"
Tumblr media
Funk Flex is at it again!  First, he had a back and forth with Conway the Machine.  Now, he’s on to Juelz Santana.  It’s been almost two years since Santana has been released from prison and Flex is wondering where the music is.  Yesterday, during his evening HOT 97 slot, he called out the Harlem rapper.  He suggested that he drop a song next week.  He not only suggested, but he challenged Juelz to make a new song.  Funk Flex really wants to hear a new Juelz Santana record in 2022 and Juelz’s response to Flex was positive.  He accepted the challenge in the comments, writing “Let’s Gooo” in his story.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by THE HIP-HOP WOLF® (@thehiphopwolf) https://twitter.com/in_the__cut/status/1552794570567606273?s=21&t=0KPwEHDFJojd6rjWSBU09g New Music from Juelz Juelz has been telling his fans that he will provide new music since he got out of prison in February.  He even mentioned a collaboration between himself and Lil Durk back in May.  On N.O.R.E.’s Drink Champs, he tells the fellow MC that he is in the studio and explained his lack of putting out music lately. Flex vs. The Machine The legendary DJ’s feud with Conway the Machine didn’t last long.  Conway criticized Flex by saying he was an out of touch “gatekeeper” in hip-hop.  In a video that was shared to social media, Conway can be heard saying that Flex and older DJs like him need to get out of the way.  He claims they stunt artists’ growth and adds that he doesn’t need them anyway.  Flex responded via Instagram seemingly confused.  He doesn’t understand why big artists such as Conway with support from major labels such as Rock Nation and Interscope get upset with him.  Flex adds that he has gotten features from the top artists such as Lil Wayne, Jadakiss, Travis Scott, and Eminem to name a few. After all the back and forth, their dispute was settled with a freestyle by Conway over Biz Markie “Nobody Beats the Biz” beat.  It’s called “RIP Steve Smith”, dedicated to the late hip hop radio pioneer who died earlier this month.  Flex was happy Conway accepted the challenge and now he is waiting on Juelz. I’m old enough to remember Biz Markie when he first started. As a little kid in the 1980s, I enjoyed his comedic ways of creating music. “Vapors” was one of my favorites, I still know and can rap every line of that song today. “Just A Friend”, “Nobody Beats The Biz”, “Let Me Turn You On, “Make The Music With Your Mouth, Biz”, and so many more hits. Everything that he did was larger than life from beatboxing to acting, DJing to just being himself — a nice guy in person who always made time for his fans no matter where he was. I was really hoping that he would pull through after the last time it was said he wasn’t going to make it. So many of my rap heroes are gone now 😔
