hi! question!! ok so like. I've been in hbowar fandom for awhile but I must admit I haven't followed MOTA news quite as religiously so I'm sorry if this has been answered before but like...... can I ask why there was such an emphasis on austin butler and callum turner's characters? is it because they're the "leaders" of a sort? (and if so, in like a dick winters way? in that they're the leaders of their unit? or is it in a sledge, basilone, leckie way? in that the narratives of the shows are based on their memoirs of the war?) or is it because they're the actors you're bound to recognize at first glance and therefore are pandering to the audience?

piggy back riding on that question..... do you think mota would follow a band of brothers kinda story telling where the povs sorta change almost every episode? and there's an emphasis on the group as a whole? or is it gonna be like the pacific? where it centers on 3 pov characters, as i said before, based off the irl guys' memoirs of the war?

thank you for running this blog, btw. it's good to have all the news in one place instead of having to go hunting for it!! have you tried to appeal to tumblr staff about getting the blog unshadowbanned? maybe they could help?

i think this website gives a very helpful overview of who the "main players" are (it's a bit dated tho, last updated in 2019!) lots could've changed by then, and even the author admits that it's all speculation. but by 2019, there were 5 confirmed "main characters": john "bucky" egan, gale "bucky" cleven, rosie rosenthal, harry crosby, and ken lemmons. they're palyed by austin butler, callum turner, nate mann, anthony boyle, and raff law, in that order.

the focus is on the 100th bombardment group ("the blood hundredth"), with likely a narrower focus on the 418th and 350th squadrons, with probably some focus on the 349th. cleven's part of the 350th, egan and cruikshank (also important) are part of the 418th, and major william veal's part of the 349th (which is likely less important, but i'm adding it bc i saw his name among egan and cleven's name in this behind the scenes photo almost 2 years ago, but not much on veal otherwise).

so, this is one group and (more or less) two different squadrons. the narrowed focus is meant to lean more "band of brothers" and less "the pacific".

to answer your first question, the focus on butler and turner is probably 1) better for promo (they're more well known to the public) and 2) cleven and egan were both the commanding officers of their respective units. the leaders, for sure. also known as "the two buckys", as they both had the same nickname and were very close friends (as the above article puts it, they "were roommates throughout flight school…[they were] roommates during training, but they would eventually become roommates in a POW camp as well.")

i like that you brought up leckie and sledge tho, bc while the bulk of the show is based around donald miller's book, it seems like they'll also be leaning on harry crosby's memoir- a wing and a prayer. he was a group navigator in the 418th. also, the smithsonian has a little scrapbook that you can read here.

i'm thinking that, yeah, the povs may change depending on the episode (given how it seems they want to follow the "band of brothers" playbook, to a point). there's definitely gonna be time devoted to the ground crew (lemmons was a mechanic in the ground crew and stayed in england for the duration of the war) and rosie rosenthal, especially (his crew was called "rosie's riveters"). then, there's the inclusion of black soldiers in the 332d fighter group, part of the tuskegee airmen (hence the casting of ncuti gatwa, branden cross, josiah cross, among others).

keep in mind that these are all just my guesstimations! i don't want to predict what's gonna happen, given that i still want to be surprised lol

002 | Give me a character & I will tell you

How I feel about this character: Jellybean is a goddamn delight. She’s such a preteen/early teenager with her grumpiness and her too-cool-for-you vibe and her Minecraft (which, btw, I’m still bummed they didn’t come up with an off-brand name for). She’s not much of a character because of how little we see her, but what we do see of her is pretty great, she’s such a little shit like her brother and also to her brother. And she was a little gang princess back in Toledo! Like, she worked on cars and had Lugnut (aka replacement Jughead) answering to her and had her little Serpent jacket at fucking eleven or twelve (although Riverdale seems to be pulling some of its timeline bullshit and ignoring how Jughead mentioned she was ten back in season 1), and I want to know more about that because it’s adorable. She seems really into cars and tinkering, what with her introduction working on cars and the way she dressed up as Rosie the Riveter for Halloween. Also, her little crush on Archie was so cute, she clearly shares her mom’s taste for hot dumb guys. Oh, also also, I love her slingshot and how good she is at using it. Like, she took out Penny! And omg “Drop the butterknife, bitch” is fucking iconic, I love her forever. Also, she’s clearly a smart kid, well-read like her brother and clever too, she even helped her mom study for the GED and picked up on the fact that something shady was going on with the faking-Jughead’s-death plot! (Side note: I love that everyone in the Jones family is smart except FP). I’d love to see more of her, but I doubt we will because of the five year time skip because I don’t think her actress could play seventeen/eighteen and it’d be weird to recast her. I assume we’ll have fiddled with her age and sent her off to college, which is a bummer because I really like her.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: You know, I kind of liked the idea of her with Ricky because of all the parallels between Jughead and Joaquin, but I was never invested in it because, well, they’re just kids with very little screentime. Honestly, I see her more as having a girlfriend in the future, but she’s so young and there are no other characters her age on the show that I don’t really ship her with anyone.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Jones family feels, but especially Jughead! They seem to have a playful and teasing relationship that they both really care about. Their reunion hug was just the sweetest thing ever, and I love the way Jellybean sniped at him with the “kid Kerouac” comment. (Side note: I love that she knows who Kerouac is at eleven/twelve/whatever young age she is that can’t be more than thirteen) Jellybean, who generally comes off as so tough, is so precious when she’s like “Is Jughead here yet?” at Halloween. And the way Jughead takes that picture of him and Jellybean everywhere he goes, from the Drive-In to Stonewall, is just so sweet. She also seems a little bitter about Jughead leaving, which I really feel and relate to because my brother and I actually have roughly the same age gap that she and Jughead do. She probably has her own set of abandonment issues, and I really want to see more of Jughead being there for her. Also! That time the Gladys brought the Gargoyles into the trailer but Jughead and Jellybean thought they were breaking in or something and they both immediately drew their weapons (switchblade and slingshot) even though they had only been watching tv is the best thing ever. They’re little combat siblings! But Jughead was also standing protectively in front of her and it was just the best thing ever. And Jellybean also wants to help and protect Jughead, remember when she was so worried when she first figured out something was up during the Jughead-might-be-dead-but-we’re-also-faking-his-death plot? It was adorable and I loved it. I just love their relationship and wish I could see more of it.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I don’t think I have one? She’s a pretty vague character that I’m not sure there can be any controversial opinions about Jellybean because there’s such a wide variety of ways she can be interpreted.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish she had had more screentime with Jughead because they’re precious, and I also really wish I had seen her interact with Betty more. They both like cars and love Jughead and they live together, they have to have interacted some, especially when Jughead was still living there. Like, I’d love to see Betty and Jellybean’s first meeting where Jellybean is probably sizing her up and going “Are you good enough for my brother?” and Betty is like “This is Jughead’s precious little sister, I need her to like me”. Based on the Halloween episode, they don’t seem close, but I wish they had been. Like, surely there were times where they hung out with Jughead because he wants to spend time with them both, right? Especially during all those weekends where he comes back from Stonewall and almost certainly needs to spend time with them both because he doesn’t have time to do his homework and spend time with each of them individually? Because Jughead does seem like the type of brother who actually spends time with his kid sister. Like, I’d love to see the three of them together, especially an AU of Halloween where they actually got to spend it together, the three of them watching scary movies that I don’t think any of them are scared by. Oh, and I’d love to see the scene where Betty told Jellybean that they were faking Jughead’s death; I love that they kept her in the loop on that because letting her believe her brother was dead would be too cruel. And I bet they have similar feelings about their parents living together and could totally talk about it. Oh, and I’d love to see them swap embarrassing stories about Jughead. There are so many ways they could interact, and I just wish I had seen more of them.

My OTP: None, I don’t really do much shipping with her.

My crossover ship: Again, none.

A headcanon fact: She’s a well-read kid with cool taste in music, but she’s also destined to be a hipster who hates hipsters.

also i have read approx 2 headcanons and baRELY understand this AU so if there are similarities to anyone else or inconsistencies iT IS AN ACCIDENT AND IM SORRY

anyway this is just about the 4 confirmed paladins BET ill be doing more about Fa’rah/Takashi/Zahi/Ashanti once i know a bit more about their roles in the team!!

Alvaro Garcia Valladares

he has a twin. i don't make the rules, but he has a twin.

he has a big family. the biggest family. we’re talking, his mom has 8 siblings and his dad has 9 and there’s a 10 year age gap between him and his oldest sibling and he loves them all so much

natia is his best friend. i repeat, NATIA IS HIS BEST FRIEND!!!!

he’s also quite close with kiki. Natia and Kiki are the only two that he met before their great space adventure

he wasn't really sure of his sexuality at first. (i say this because i wasn't sure of my sexuality at first - im bi btw - and all the media i saw told me that any lgbt+ character was 100% sure of their sexuality form the day they were born, which made me doubt myself bc i didn't figure it out till recently, so i wanna see that in some media!! sometime!!) he probably figured it out halfway through having a crush on someone

the someone is akio, and he definitely tells Natia about it first

“natia... natia listen.... I have a crush on akio. freakin akio.... what do i do??? I’m bi, natia... I'm bi. what does this mean -”

“alvaro, I'm so proud of you, but this is a public bathroom and akio is right outside -”

GUARANTEE that the first time he saw Akio he just basically wanted to fight him but also flirt with him and had a slight moral crisis and ended up doing nothing

he is a goddamn sharpshooter, okay. he straight up becomes famous for it throughout the galaxy.

yet despite that he’s still insecure, and those insecurities prevent him from really getting together w akio until much later

he comes off as very suave and extroverted when you first meet him, but underneath it all, he’s actually really warm, personable and funny: not that anyone outside the team know that

aliens on social media, probably: god, the blue paladin is so cool... i bet he’s amazing and awesome and eloquent...

basically an all around great guy. because he often felt like a seventh wheel at the beginning of the formation of the team, he always tries to include everybody as best as possible, going way out of his way to ask after people, even if they forget to ask about him sometimes :’)

Natia Nanai

first off: what a gorgeous name. seriously. incredible kudos, my dude. anyway on to the head canons for this gorgeous girl

probably alvaro’s soulmate. already mentioned this, but it needs reiteration. they are best friends

had a large family too (not as big as alvaros tho) and probably major relate to him with that big family dealio

v close with kiki. they complete each other on a technological level.

natia is very, very creative. she and her sweet engineering know how are always instrumental in getting the Team out of tough situations

everyone on the team, regardless of sexuality, is low-key in love with her because she’s just so nice. no one can hate her. she's way too solid of a friend

speakinG of being a great friend: natia is 100% the secret keeper up in this bitch. everyone comes to her because they know she’s got the best advice around and will take their secrets to the grave

akio: idk man... alvaro is just rlly cute, u know?? but i can't tell him...

natia, thinking of alvaro literally whining to her about akio not even five minutes ago: christ

the mom friend. she always has all the things everyone needs on hand or in her lion, and she’s got it all going in terms of chore charts and family meals. she is the queen of figuring out times for team bonding and everyone loves her more for it

definitely started a board game night asap

she has a silent bravery about her that no one else can match. despite her trepidation, natia will always do what has to be done for the greater good.

she is guided by her heart and her morals, and is easily the kindest person on the team

bc of this kindness, she is often the diplomat when conflicts arise between people on the team

she is seen by the general public (aka the galaxy) as a strong, morally righteous woman. kind of like rosie the riveter-esque??? she’s the symbol of justice and fairness.

“always tired, but always inspired” - kiki, on being asked why there were dark circles under her eyes

kind of standoffish. she’s not really about being nice, she's about getting the job done, and that can rub people the wrong way, since she is always the first to offer up the cold, logical solution

but underneath that, she’s just a computer science nerd who is loyal to a fault

she really is loyal. its almost dangerous sometimes, because she would put the universe in danger to save her friends, which actually comes into conflict with her typical cold, logical approach.

she has 0-1 sibling. she's every bit the single child. she cannot relate to living in a big family setting, and at first its hard for her to deal with before she warms up to everyone else on the team

she's a genius, and thus found school to be tedious. in fact, she got fairly bad grades, as she wouldn't do the work that she saw as pointless and boring

she is a meme connoisseur, and loves to quote vines, often assisted by alvaro

she is a conspiracy theorist, for sure. the government is watching us all, trying to make sure we don't learn too much.... she’s sure of it, and akio is too

tbh, the first proper conversation she had with akio was about cryptids and how the government had hidden them from the public

she was friends w natia and alvaro from before, but it is akio she becomes closest with the fastest. in some ways, she feels more distant from natia/alvaro bc of how close they are with each other and bc all of them have known each other for so long while akio is someone she got to know recently: he has no preconceptions about who she used to be, and she has none about him

plus, she and akio relate on many levels: both trans, both gay, both autistic, both theorists, and both loyal to a fault. she finds a real blood brother in akio :D

very openly gay. very. she's a space lesbian, and theres no denying it

kiki, meeting some random space girl: oh

basically, she's a tech goddess with a splash of genius. she's uneasy and a bit awkward, but thats just bc she’s never been in a situation like this before. after literally 1 second with her, she opens up and is such a loyal friend. :’)

considering that, his first meeting with alvaro was supremely awkward, and akio accidentally fought with him multiple times before they established a solid friendship

he is a stabby boi. he is unrivaled in swordplay, and enjoys routine. his natural affinity for picking up new skills plus his unrivaled work ethic basically DESTROYED everyone else when it came to swords

he’s loyal af and is always the first one to take action. akio is a “do something. do anything, but do it fast before we lose a chance to do something” kind of guy

the general public sees him as the fiery one: he’s the one with the fanciest footwork in a fight, and he’s very good with battle tactics. he can come thru with that strategy at the perfect times

he's a low-key emo. for sure. he loves MCR, but strangely dislikes other similar artists like p!atd and fob.

kiki: but...brendon urie, akio....

akio, sipping tea: as a gay, i can appreciate the aesthetic. but no one can compete with MCR

kiki, exasperated: its not a competition -

basically, a slightly guarded boy with a real talent for defending the universe and his friends, but also an emo cowboy mess who is in love with alvaro and loves everyone :’)
