Bookcast Episode 64: Reading, Writing and Stuffing
Welcome to episode 64 of the Bookcast, my platform for sharing short fiction and updates on what I'm reading and writing. I'm DL White, author of 12 contemporary southern and romantic fiction novels featuring Black men and women. I'm also a fan fiction writer and a lover of books.   This podcast is sponsored by me... with your support and I thank you for it. If you would like to offer more support, head to buymeacoffee.com/booksbydlwhite. There, you can offer a one-time or recurring monthly gift and I would be most grateful. Booksbydlwhite.com/books has all of my titles in whatever format I have  available, but if you prefer to buy them retail, all of my titles are available wherever eBooks are sold as well as subscription sites like EVERAND (the new name for SCRIBD), kobo plus, and your local library through Libby or hoopla.  Buy them in print at Resist Booksellers or bookshop.org.
I talked about a nice benefit for Spotify premium members who like audiobooks. Be sure to use your 15 free hours per month, courtesy of findaway by Spotify. I used mine up in about 1.5 books... don't mind it at all. I'll take a free audiobook.
Leslie's Curl & Dye audio is still on sale. Hit booksbydlwhite.com/audiosale for links to that sale.
I have read 160 books of my challenge to read 175 books this year.   I am  3 books ahead!  I talked about the following books in today's episode:
A Merciful Truth (Mercy Kilpatrick, #2) by Kendra Elliot
Coming Home by Kennedy Ryan
Drown Her Sorrows (Bree Taggert #3) by Melinda Leigh
Right Behind Her (Bree Taggert, #4) by Melinda Leigh

Ryan: I had a feeling you were using the wrong computation model but I didn’t say anything because you’re so sensitive. Niko: Just because I am easily bothered by light, heat, sound, smell, and the way birds look at me does not mean I’m sensitive!

i’m confessing to fellow ND fans
i hate almost every single game that came after Captive Curse. (minus game 32.) some i don’t hate as much as i just have complete apathy towards, but for the most part: i can’t stand them.
to me they feel so disjointed, like a collection of parts that come from different things, none of which fit together. you still have some really difficult puzzles, much like in older games, but now the stories and writing have been heavily watered down for the new, younger players HeR keeps insisting on trying to appeal to. you still have the beautiful pre-rendered environments, but many times they feel too sterile and lifeless, with far fewer details and less personality than in a lot of the older games. i don’t think i need to point out how awful the character designs in the games 25-31 are, but they still have newer graphics while operating on the old concept of repeated cycles of animation, which really don’t fit together. they try to write characters that are funny and quirky and interesting, but the writing isn’t clever enough to pull this off well the way the old games could, and in the end it just makes them all really annoying. (yes, i am targeting Ryan Kilpatrick, and i’ll probably do it again at some point.)
i’ve played each of the newest games before, more than once, and each time after i walk away, within an hour i’ll forget the whole experience completely. (it’s embarrassing the number of times i've had to do googling on a ND meme i didn’t understand because i forgot everything that happened in a game i’ve already played at least twice.) they just feel like playing a whole bunch of nothing. i’m struggling to put my finger on any one thing specifically, but the new games just feel so bare-bones, minimal, and bland. it really feels like there’s nothing of substance to offer, particularly when you compare them to how much personality felt jam-packed into the stories and writing in the older games.
i am not in any way criticizing people who enjoy the newer games. if anything, i’m really glad that there are fans who can continue playing the games past a certain point and enjoying them for what they are. i’m also not trying to be puritanical about the series making changes; the world of gaming is a lot different now than it used to be, so changing to try and better fit the times is understandable.
but i also won’t deny that my inability to connect with the newer games makes me feel very alienated from a good chunk of the fandom. this is a personal problem of course, but i’m also curious if there are any other fans in a similar position.
