Exploring the Diverse Techniques of River Erosion Works
Introduction Rivers, with their ever-flowing currents, have the incredible power to shape the landscape over time. However, this natural force can sometimes pose a threat to human settlements, infrastructure, and agricultural lands. To mitigate the adverse effects of river erosion, various engineering techniques have been developed over the years. In this article, we will delve into the different…

At the bus stop one time there was a gaggle of preschoolers waiting to catch the bus for a field trip day, and someone walked past with a couple of friendly little dogs, to great general delight.
But after a little bit, the dogs were getting overwhelmed, and the preschoolers were gently coaxed to back off so the person with the dogs could continue on. Specifically, one of the preschool teachers said, "Sometimes, when you're small, being surrounded by big people can be a bit scary and overwhelming. Even if they are friendly."
This was recieved as great wisdom: after all, the preschoolers were also small, and understood how scary and overwhelming big people could be! And the dogs were indeed even smaller than the preschoolers, so it made sense.
What was funny and charming was that, upon absorbing and reflecting on this wisdom, they all felt the need to tell it to one another. In tones of great insight, they turned to one another and said, "Did you know? Sometimes when you are small, being surrounded by big people can be scary and overwhelming! Even if they are friendly!" Back and forth, without any particular concern that they were all saying the same thing. Have reached comprehension of an insight, it must be shared!
I must say that this behavior is less charming in tumblr users than in preschoolers. Not least because tumblr users, having gained a little analytical skill to misuse, insist on Summarizing and Generalizing and Unifying the insights they repeat, quickly turning any interesting new information into formulaic dogmatic mush.
#i made the mistake of looking in the notes of the beach sand post i reblogged to see if anyone else had interesting comments#And the rate at which it went from like#1) person states with moderate confidence an opinion based on their personal observations#2) multiple people reply with “wow thats so insightful!” (aka it aligns with my preconceived notions of how things work)#3) someone else adds additional personal observations which are not really relevant but which can be absorbed into the narrative#4) people start outright stating the underlying belief on which this bias is constructed as if it were a fresh insight#5) general derisive attitude towards people who haven't seen the Obviously Correct solution to this complex real world problem yet#It's very.......#It's not like it's a high stakes post but it's such a microcosm of the whole dogmatic phenomenon#Also this js a more specific gripe to My Field or w/e#But the degree to which people react to the problems caused by the whole “Control of Nature” era of engineering#with this equally reductive “Nature will Fix Everything” type of attitude#Is sooooo frustrating.#Yes a great many of our current problems could have been avoided if we had not made massive changes to ecosystem processes on the assumptio#That they were simple and we understood them. And that they would respond in predictable ways.#the simplicity in retrospect of “wow we Should Not have done that” does not mean that they are simple to undo!#You can't go back in time. You can't turn back the clock on chaotic processes#Which is. Almost every process ever.#Restoration is hard! Returning to previous regimes of sediment or flooding or fire is tricky and full of foibles!#Moving towards a future which doesn't suck as much even if the past cant be recreated is also uncertain and difficult!#It's frustrating to see people act all high and mighty about how they Respect Nature unlike whoever is making all these decisions#When their understanding of the natural processes in question is AS simplistic as the people who caused the whole mess back in 1910 or w/e#Like I'm not saying there's not bad interests standing in the way of functional restoration on all levels#That's very much a fight to be fought.#But looking at that fight-in-process and saying “wow none of you Respect Nature like me uwu let nature fix it”#Is.#Ugh.

The company behind the Coastal GasLink gas pipeline project in northern B.C. has received a whopping $346,000-fine from the B.C. government for environmental deficiencies and providing false and misleading information.
According to the Ministry of Environment, Coastal GasLink Pipeline Ltd. failed to meet conditions of its environmental assessment certificate. In a Thursday statement, it said compliance officers found inadequate erosion and sediment control during several inspections along the pipeline route in April and May last year.
The company also gave false and misleading information last October as well in relation to maintenance inspection records, the province found. That cost Coastal GasLink $6,000, while the erosion control matter cost $340,000.
“As a result of continued concerns, the Environmental Assessment Office has prioritized the CGL project for compliance monitoring, with nearly 100 inspections by air and ground since the project started in 2019,” B.C.’s statement reads.
“These inspections have led to the EAO issuing 59 warnings, 30 orders – including 13 stop-work orders – and more than $800,000 in fines.” [...]

Odd question but - I'm looking to study in the UK this fall, and I'm trying to get to grips with the grading system. Could you explain the grading boundaries to me please? It's different from the US, as far as I can see!
I found this handy table which you might find useful - I don't really understand the US system either lol.
Here's what I will say though - I have many times before seen Americans online seeing the percentages for the UK grade boundaries and immediately wax lyrical about how EASY and SIMPLE it must be to do well in the UK because OH MY GOD I could tooootally get 70%!!! In the US that's barely a C!!! Wow education must be soooo simple in the UK -
And uh. I have seen very few Americans in those discussions stop and ask themselves how much harder it might be to hit 70% in the UK. Which, as the international academic office in every university will tell you, is the crucial question you absolutely should be asking. Does an American 70% look the same as a UK 70%?
(It Does Not.)
So don't be fooled by that! Over here, at undergrad the pass mark is 40%. 40-49% gets you a third; 50-59% gets you what's varyingly known as a lower second (formally), a 2:2 (most commonly), or a Desmond (by sad people. It's a reference to Desmond Tutu - two two). A 2:2 is also the most commonly awarded degree classification over here.
60-69% is a 2:1, or upper second class honours. And then the top level is the first - 70% and up. The vast majority of firsts are earned by students who got 70-79%. Exceptional work pushes into the 80s. It is incredibly rare that you ever see a mark in the 90s, and when you do, it's almost always on maths papers where there are right or wrong answers and that's it.
I can't remember how the US's summa cum laude etc stuff maps onto that, though you could probably find that on Google as well. But as a rule of thumb, think first = excellent, 2:1 = good, 2:2 = fair, and third = you need to be careful and see what you can do to improve (although that is still a pass at university and that is not to be sniffed at).
Ooh, as a final point, though, there's also how assessment works, which again, I know is very different over here (again I don't really understand it in the US). Your lecturer cannot set random work here and there to count as summative assessment. Every module is different in how it's set up, but let's give an example:
Module: Coastal and Marine Conservation Two assessments, each worth 50% of the final grade. Assessment 1: A report on the biodiversity of Ramsey Island in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Explore the cause of the lower biodiversity there than nearby Skomer/Skokholm; how was this challenged/rectified? How have species recovered since? What should be done into the future? Assessment 2: A two-hour closed book exam. Half of this exam (50 marks) will be a mix of short and medium length questions; things like "Define these five terms (two marks each)", or "Describe the process of longshore drift and its impact on sedimentation patterns (15 marks)" or what have you. The second half is a 50 mark essay - pick one of three essay questions offered, and off you go. (Essay questions are a staple feature of exams over here, and multiple choice questions are extremely rare and generally frowned on as being Not Sufficiently Academic.)
Now, in the case of this module, these are the only two assessment points. Both the report brief and the exam paper are registered with the academic office in the summer before the academic year even starts, and both are triple verified - by the lecturer who writes/sets them, by an internal verifier in the department, and an external verifier from another university. This is part of quality control.
If, for some reason, you fail one of these, or cannot submit them by their due date, or what have you, you still have to do them. If you claim for Extenuating Circumstances (e.g. "I was made homeless and my cat blew up, so I couldn't do it in time") then you get an extension on it; as long as you submit by the end of the academic period, you're fine. If you don't, you need to resit it. This normally means over the summer after the main term ends.
But, in the UK system what we can't do is go "Okay never mind, how about you submit a write-up of the volunteering you're currently doing with SeaLife instead and we'll count that?" The reason being, under the UK system that is not a quality-controlled solution. That has not been checked and verified as an equivalent assessment to what the rest of the class has done; so if you do that and get a 2:1, there is no assurance that you are actually of the same academic quality as one of your peers who got a 2:1 for that research report on Ramsey's biodiversity.
Which... don't let it scare you! As I say, there are a LOT of systems that can help you if things start going wrong (always, always, always keep Student Support and your lecturers in the loop). But that is a different system from what I understand you might be used to, so heads up on that.
(I am not arguing that one is better than the other, by the way. Last time I explained a difference in the UK university system I got a very hostile and aggressive American in the notes throwing a right strop over how terrible the UK system clearly is because XYZ, right up until I had to actually say "I am literally just describing how it's different, not claiming superiority," and then they went mysteriously quiet and stopped replying. So to forestall that, I am only describing the differences. There are advantages and disadvantages to each.
The UK system is certainly more inflexible. But it does, incidentally, at least free you from the tyranny I see reported so often by US students of the dreaded Tenured Professor who deliberately as a matter of pride sets impossible exams that everyone fails. Over here, that shit Does Not Fly. So there's that.)
Anyway - hopefully that answers your question! Any others, hit me up. Good luck, and enjoy your studies!

My friend visits the other day, and when he goes into the bathroom he cannot get the light switch to throw. “Oh, is the light broken in here?” “No, just stuck,” I tell him. “You have to push the light switch in a little.” It had started the other week. Something in the switch fell out of alignment. It’s not broken though. It’s still useable. I’ve let it be.
My friend leaves without knowing the front door is the same. The door must be pushed inward to get the key to take. Something about the bolt is out of place. And so is the one closet door whose ball-bearing alignment broke and no longer slides. And the cabinet whose bottom hinges fractured. But they still work. They need only be handled specially, and with care.
The switch on my bedside lamp broke recently. It no longer clicks off. But the lamp can be unplugged. Unplugged and replugged and unplugged, and so I have not bothered. My phone charger flickers in and out, faulty, but it will still charge if you take care to keep the cord at the right angle. And so I do, and so it does. The controls on my headphones have not worked in two years. But the controls from my phone work, so it’s all well enough.
I do know how to call maintenance. I’ve done it when the dishwasher stopped working entirely. I do know how to replace broken things. I’ve bought new bulbs for those which have burnt out.
But the middle persists. The broken and still useable. The damaged and still functional. Those whose purposes are still served with extra steps and compromises. This is not frugality. It’s complacency. The ease of allowing atrophy. I will let these things go on forever, if they want. I wish these things would simply break.
I know this about me. I think it’s good, then, probably, that I’m not searching for a partner. “They’re clearly not happy.” “Why don’t they just get a divorce?” I think I get it. I think that’d be me. I’d think I’d accept, and let all things crumble, and settle like sediment, and sit through the thousand cuts of a failing partnership because I do not throw away things which are not already dead. I do not fix that which can be lived with. And I think, quite simply, that is a power which I cannot afford to give someone over me.

Today's cephalopod weirdo: The Pyjama squid
Tumblr media
No, it's not a melting scoop of stracciatella ice cream. It's the Pyjama squid (Sepioloidea lineolata)!
Like their cousins the bobtails, they often bury in the sediment. They're in the order Sepiida, which includes bobtails, cuttlefish, bottletails, and these cuties.
Some articles on the internet will say stuff like "These animals are technically cuttlefish" and... listen... I don't know who said that, but whoever said it is wrong, and now sources all over the damn internet are repeating it, and like... I shouldn't let it bother me, ya know? But it does, unfortunately, make me feel like my eyeballs are going to fall out of my head.
Because words MEAN something, you know? And the word cuttlefish means an animal with a cuttlebone in it. The cuttlefish are a distinct bunch of critters. Their fins go around their whole bodies*, they have W shaped pupils, but most critically, they have a buoyancy device called a cuttlebone. That cuttlebone keeps them neutrally buoyant- so they neither float nor sink. They just chill. They're able to control the buoyancy with gas exchange between their blood and the little gas chambers in that cuttlebone. The other members of the Sepiida, the bottletails, pyjama squid, and bobtails, they don't have any of that. Sure, they're totally, 100%, most closely related among the cephalopods to cuttlefish, but... cuttlefish... are their own little group within that branch of the family tree.
*Ok to be fair, it's very easy to confuse cuttlefish and reef squid, but that's a whole other post.

How Sediment Control Plays a Role in Commercial Construction?
Sediment control is the process or implementation of strategies to combat soil erosion. Soil erosion can contaminate waterways and harm the environment. Not only is soil unnaturally entering streams and rivers a serious environmental concern, but construction projects often leave soil contaminated due to the chemicals involved in construction. Sediment control is important not just for the reputations of construction companies but also for the state of the environment. Sediment control law aims to protect the aquatic life of our streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans. The health of our water systems directly affects the human population. So if you want to know more about the erosion and sediment control Washington DC then we would recommend you to take the assistance of Sera Engineered LLC. Sera Engineered LLC is an independent civil engineering company licensed in Washington DC, Virginia, and Maryland.

“You doing alright, girl?”, Kishibe asked playing with the hem of your lacy panty.
“um-hmm”, you nod bashfully as you watch him taking your legs over his thighs. The fumes of cigarette cloud in front of his face as you adjust your lacy outfit. His stoic gaze scans you thoroughly making you conscious about your barely clad body. He has you laid on the bed with the flimsy lingerie that barely covers your modesty but rather pronounces your features. He turns on the Hitachi wand making you bite your lip as the vibrations echo in the room.
It is afternoon. The curtains are drawn in, the windows closed. The fan is noisier than usual while the ac is on. "Let me know if you want me to stop, alright?" Let him know. He must be kidding. You barely knew what he is gonna do with that bulbed rod thingy. Is he going to rub over your cunt? or is he going for the mouth.
Nervousness crept into your body thinking about all the possible scenarios your vanilla mind could permit. "Okay, Daddy!", you chimed to get rid of the bubbling tension. Kishibe lets out a throaty chuckle which is slightly reassuring given the silent atmosphere. He discards the cigarette on the nearby ashtray as he rasped, "hands above head, locked"
He puts the head of the Hitachi wand on your boobs, while his other hand roams over your tummy. He must admit he loves this of you. Gradually, he moves the Hitachi wand all over your body yet not over your vagina. His eyes lurk over you as you squirm underneath him, ankles curling yet you are so obedient to keep your hands above your head that it makes him wanna spoil you more, wanna explore you more.
He notices that your hands roam over your nape and your head rolling from side to side. You could feel your thighs getting closer but were unable to close since he was sitting in between in your legs using the wand on you. Goosebumps spread all over your skin as he holds the top of Hitachi wand near your lower belly almost grazing your feminity.
"I think you should touch yourself", he whispers pressing the vibrating device strongly against your cunt. Your tummy twitches from the sudden sensation, "Ya' know play with your boobs"
"play with …", you murmur as your palms ran across your chest. Kishibe skillfully keeps the device over your vagina while his arms extend to slip the straps of your bra enough to have your boobs at the display. He has always wondered if your nipples had the color of your lips, especially when you keep talking cheerfully.
"Yeah, touch yourself", he remarks. You hesitate for a bit but the moment you touch your boobs, a trail of moans escapes your mouth gasping for breath. You need not be told twice what to do.
"Beautiful", he chimes as he circles the head of the Hitachi wand over your pussy. Your arch in rolls of pleasure, moaning and panting irregularly. An upward crescent tugs up his lips as he notices you bucking up your hips, moving your pelvic up and down to control the sedimenting heat in your core.
"You are so wet.", he says just a moment before removing the panty aside and pushing forth the head of the Hitachi wand. You fail to hold down your scream, but his expression does not falter, the intensity of vibration does. It increases making you roll your eyes white. Your legs wrap around his torso as you pinch your nipples. The more he presses the device into your cunt, the greater the force of pinch.
"Yep, that's it.", Kishibe puts away the Hitachi wand watching your slick trickle down your inner pussy lips as you gasp heavily, your arms resting over your boobs. You look at him and then your eyes travel down to his crotch.
He got a boner just by watching you cum and that too using a device. You sit upright hoping he would kiss you but he denies it as you incline towards him. He cups your cheeks, lightly saying, "You're good but I could make you better.", placing a kiss on the crook of your neck.

for the polar history recap posts, i’m dying to know more about lillie…deeply tragic and i’ve also heard something about the nickname ‘ooze’ and i desperately need to know more about that
LILLIE 😭😭😭😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Tumblr media
denis (also spelled dennis) gascoigne lillie was born in 1884, making him 26 when the terra nova set off for antarctica. he was trained in natural sciences at cambridge (although he didn't do too well on his exams) and was appointed as the ship's biologist—meaning he did not form part of the shore party in the hut in at cape evans, but remained on board the ship during the winter, studying antarctic marine biology including whales, plankton, and deep-sea creatures like sponges (like the one pictured above). his nickname "ooze" comes from his job as biologist—ooze refers to a specific kind of biological marine sediment that got pulled up in seabed dredges which lillie would then examine.
in silas's diary on the voyage south, he describes lillie:
Lilley—"Hercules'" or "Sequins" is rather a dreamer and asserts he can remember his former existences in this world. Much fun can be got from him if handled properly.
lillie was noted by other members of the expedition to be a bit of a crackpot, asserting that he was a persian and a roman in his past lives. and more than that, possibly:
Lillie had decided that he was not the marrying type, claiming that he had evolved beyond it. In later years Scott’s young Norwegian skiing expert Tryggve Gran recounted that as they crossed the Equator on the Terra Nova Lillie had revealed that he was a woman trapped in a man’s body. ‘When I see a naked man I blush,’ he allegedly said as the others sprawled shirtless on the deck in tropical sunshine, ‘I am split and I can’t help it. Luckily I understand myself and have the control to avoid doing anything wrong.’ Gran was a notoriously unreliable source, and it is hard to imagine anyone having the courage to say that under those circumstances; but perhaps Lillie did.
(from sara wheeler's cherry)
usually i would not recommend anyone trust anything that comes out of gran's mouth, but honestly i do buy this, because, well... vibes.
anyway, on the terra nova, lillie was notable for his talent at caricature, and several of his rather hilariously cruel drawings appeared (copied by wilson) in the south polar times, including this one of birdie:
Tumblr media
while the shore party was in antarctica, lillie spent two winters in new zealand studying whales, fossils, and anthropology:
Lillie has been fossilizing & is off next month for 5 months whaling with the Norwegians. He is looking very well & very happy and is ‘a dear little chap’ to use Scott’s expression.
—pennell's diary, may 18 1911
after returning to england, taking the long way round on board the terra nova to continue his marine research, lillie took up residence at cambridge again, alongside deb, silas, priestley, and griff, to work up the scientific results from the expedition.
lillie also spent a lot of time with atch and pennell in 1913, frequently accompanying them to dine and see theater in london. he also drew (probably on board the ship) the caricature of them as the "antarctic lovebirds":
Tumblr media
during the war, he was a conscientious objector—a "conchie," refusing to go to the front. it was an incredibly difficult position to maintain in the face of widespread societal opposition. he found solace in a continued and deepening relationship with cherry (who was also not at the front, though in his case for health reasons) as sara wheeler describes in her biography of cherry:
Currently working as a bacteriologist for the military, Lillie had been one of the few visitors at Lamer during the bad months in the middle of 1916. They became unusually intimate (‘I should love to see your chubby cheeks again’), and after one weekend Lillie scrawled with typical irreverence in his note of thanks that, ‘It was only my body which left you, for my ultimate Reality still walks behind your Bath chair and meditates about the many paths of your lovely garden. With love.’
and god i just need to copy these entire sections from the wheeler in here because they make me want to sob:
In September 1916 he had been transferred to the pathology lab of a military hospital in Bournemouth, which he loathed (‘no nice cliffs or sea birds, only sand banks and orange peel’), and was appalled to learn the next year that Cherry was poised to become engaged to Christine Davis (‘being unconventional and as near to nature as I can get, it seems all wrong to me that you should have to tie yourself up for the sake of Society’), but he strove, generally, to be optimistic, whereas Cherry was permanently resigned to his destiny. In August 1917 Lillie returned to Lamer for a week. Writing in advance with details of his train to Hatfield, he concluded that, ‘if a motor does not turn up the wings of joy will waft me those four-and-a-half miles bag included. So don’t worry.’ They had a wonderful time together. ‘I do hope,’ Lillie wrote when he was back in horrible Bournemouth, ‘your throat and the rest of you continues to get well and worthy of the sunny spirit which I see under the label ACG.'
though things seemed to be going as well as they could for lillie, shortly before the end of the war in early 1918, he suffered a nervous breakdown and landed in the notorious bethlem mental institution, known as bedlam. he was there for three years, and cherry was barred from visiting him.
he emerged for a short period of time in 1921, seemingly recovered, and took up lecturing in biology again at cambridge, but by the end of that year had relapsed and was institutionalized again.
frank debenham, writing to expedition agent j.j. kinsey in 1927 to solicit funding for SPRI, gave him an update:
Poor old Lillie is in less happy circumstances, the last I heard of him was that he was never likely to get out of Bedlam, a rather ghastly end up for poor old "Ooze's" brilliant promise.
lillie spent the rest of his life in institutions, and lived until the age of 78, dying in 1963. that was four years after the death of his friend cherry—who, despite constant attempts, was never allowed to visit him.
per UK law, lillie's medical records will be sealed until 2063, 100 years after his death, but a post on bethlem's official blog about lillie briefly notes that he was "depressed, delusional and suicidal."
the post also notes, importantly, that his breakdown had nothing whatsoever to do with his antarctic experiences:
The content of his medical notes suggests that the state of mind that brought him to hospital was entirely unrelated to his experiences of 1910-1913. Indeed, they report that “on the whole he felt better during this time”.
OK, let's end on a nice note. here's a picture of him having a nice time at silas's wedding (i think) with his best friends. RIP lillie, i hope your next life is going well somewhere out there right now 🥲💓
