The Story Of This Outfit
I thought I might share the inspiration for this sewing project and the story I wrote to go with it. Some of you might remember that over the summer, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. About a week ago I completed my treatment (yay!) and am starting to return to my old self. Along the way I had been sent a package in the mail from a support group with a handmade bag. I was cranky about the kind gesture because the box clearly indicated my diagnosis which I hadn’t shared with anyone. I almost dumped the whole thing in the trash until I noticed that the bag was made of vintage 1980’s fabric and the inside…well the inside was a perfect match for Sari’s dress! I squirreled it away for a time when I was less frightened and cranky. That time was this weekend.
I thought I might reproduce some Saris but after I took apart the bag and saw how much fabric I had, I thought I might be able to make a dress for Kirsten. Wait no, I could make a whole dress like your doll outfit for Kirsten! So, I found some additional vintage 80's fabric online for the boots and shawl and went to work.
I used Flossie Potters 1800's Simple Stitches pattern, which I love, for the dress and designed my own apron and shawl. But the boots, what to do about the boots? I remembered that a while back I'd gotten a big lot of Kirsten items with handmade grey felt boots. I found them and they were perfect. I just had to totally dismantle them. I used the deconstructed felt pieces as my pattern, pinned them to the cotton which I'd applied fusible interfacing to and cut them out. I'll probably make a pattern and upload it here for everyone to use because it worked really well all things considered.
The story just kind of tumbled out of me so I figured I'd put it alongside the photos. My holy grail Kirsten really is my muse.

I have this great vintage cape for my 1/4 scale dolls.
It's red wool, with bias trim made from a busy print. (I can tell it's wool from the holes.)

Seen here on my Rogue, Neve. (Photo description: a 17" ball jointed doll posing on a table. The doll has a black wig with two braids, and is dressed in a black outfit and a long red cloak. She has her hand on the hood as though she justed pulled it up over her head.)
I'm hosting a D&D&D day but one of the responses was that they didn't have any "gear" for their dolls. And, well, I sew. I'm a professional and everything. So I used the red cape as a base pattern and dug up a lovely rayon batik remnant.

Since I also have a 1/6th doll with cat features, perhaps Khajiit has wares, if you have coin?

Mori kei for dolls - Part II
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first piece of clothing I've started for my doll was an intricate skirt. I want to layer two circle skirts and add a gathered skirt as well. It's supposed to go: circle skirt, gathered skirt and smaller circle skirt. I also want to make all the skirts seperate so I can layer and mix & match to my heart's content.
My sewing machine was off to be repaired last winter when I started this so I was handsewing everything. Plus I guess some of these tiny things would be hard to sew on the machine anyway. The skirts are still a WIP and currently I also have many human clothes in the works (commissions) - but I definitely want to continue this doll wardrobe project too!
In the meantime I made a quick circle jacket from dark fleece for my doll and she's already got the cute tiny hat. Eventually I want to expand the wardrobe with spring/summer outfits too. Lots of plans for mori kei for dolls!!
I really want to finish the autumn/winter outfits this cold season.

I'd like to introduce to everyone this horrid thing I created about a year ago but haven't shown many people yet (probably for the best).
Tumblr media
This is Baby. AKA The Monster. AKA Sight Tremendous and Abhorred, AKA Vile Insect, AKA A Thing Such As Even Dante Could Not Have Conceived, etc, etc. It's made from bits of scrap fabric I scrounged from various sources and is roughly the size of a human toddler. Its design is based on Mary Shelly's original descriptions of Frankenstein's creature.

But that's not all! Behold!
Tumblr media
You can dissect this little abomination to reveal a full set of crocheted, knitted, and scrap fabric organs, all hand-stitched by yours truly!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It has a heart, stomach, lungs, liver, small and large intestine, kidneys, bladder, and, of course, a brain! So it can ponder the horrors of its own existence!
Tumblr media
I used this pattern by Less Than Three for the heart. I ended up felting it because I screwed up most of the stitches (I was relatively new to crochet at the time). The result was a bit of a blobby mess, but oh well.
So yeah. This thing lives in my house now (my family hates it). I have yet to reap the full consequences of my hubris.

Actually, have more doll pictures! Forgot I had these, but here's Toria's new bathing suit. I hand-sewed it from leftover fabric from bathing suits my mother made.

So I’m organizing my part of the sewing studio, and I found the corder I bought while I was in grad school. Because I had no free time (re: grad school), it was put away with the rest of my notions. I found it, along with some embroidery floss skeins I bought last year when I was working on crocheted flowers for a cosplay.

I tried it out. Here are the results.
The top one was wound more. The middle was wound using a bit less tension, and the bottom one is in the Herringbone style.
It takes some practice to figure out the appropriate length of thread to use, because if it’s too long, you can’t do the second step, which is hanging the corder and allowing it to wind to the trim is stable and won’t unravel.

If you’ll remember, at the very end of 2022, I made a Claudie dress with this trim, bought in a variety pack. I don’t have any to photograph them together, but overall I think they look similar enough. I’m excited to be able to match the colors of the fabric to the DMC thread in the future.
Here are a couple videos that show how it works:

I’m going to have a look at my fabrics and take some swatches to match colors when I go shopping for notions next time. I think this will work for trims, as well as for a robe belt, a bag strap, and also for sandals. I tend to only use DMC because the colors are set and don’t bleed.
