MY SGRAFFITO PLATES ARE FINALLY DONE !!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
before/after glaze fires because the detail is soo hard to capture on camera with all the shine..
bonuses & rambles under cut !!
the wing plate was marbled clay & terracotta, and the underside REALLY shows it
Tumblr media
bonus bisqueware snake to match the rest of the bisqueware pics. i am disappointed that the green underglaze was lighter than i remembered and muddied all the foliage :( wanted to make it clear in the main post so i chose a photo i took when i had just finished carving.
Tumblr media
and the kinda wonky concept design that kicked off all 3! i didnt originally plan to carve each individual scale and leaf .....
Tumblr media
process ramble time !!! my studio doesnt have the right type of wheels to use a bat on so i couldnt throw these. which disappointed me at first because handbuilt plates usually look reallyyy wacky and i get quite self concious over imperfections in my clay forms. i developed a really good process to get these as pretty as possible though! I used a convex slump mold to get the shape- convex molds are the best fo get a consistant & uniform face on each plate. usually i do this before the weekend, so when i come back i can carve away all the imperfections on a footing wheel without deforming the plate.
i usually keep it on a mold throughout the entire process- once ive carved the bottom i flip it over and set it in a concave mold to support the rim. this also helps with carving, so the wheels little hands can grab onto the mold and dont interfere with my work. when the plate looks all smooth and nice, i spend the rest of the day underglazing, then i can move on to carving it all away! it took only about 3-4 days of studio time to carve each plates design after it was footed, leaving me the last two days of the week to prep my clay for the next one!
im really happy with how these turned out, they taught me a lot about making mistakes with ceramics and really helped me get confident with my process. honestly it was way easier than my typical sculpture work, cause i already have a ton of experience with the 2D aspects of these designs, while i still have a lot to learn about sculpting even after almost three years of working with clay :3 the loss of detail in the snake's foliage is still disheartening but hell! every piece ive ever made has disappointed me and it only keeps me creating. someday i WILL make something perfect with my own two hands. and no amount of bad glaze choices along the way can fucking stop me.
oh also- the fish & snake plates both have meaning and feature specific species (i just wanted to carve wings into the other plate lol, not too much symbolism there) so take a crack at analyzing them and guessing the species if u wanna!

thanks everyone for all the bunny votes and suggestions! I ended up doing a bit of everything (and speed drying my bunnies because mania)
the moon and starry sky bunnies won the poll
Tumblr media
black with skeletons was 2nd (plus a sad bunny just because)
Tumblr media
a couple people suggested Watership Down El-Ahrairah bunnies
Tumblr media
I got a suggestion for trans bunnies (the grey will lighten to white once the clay is dry)
Tumblr media
for black and tan bunnies
Tumblr media
for a white bunny with blue eyes and a pink bunny
Tumblr media
and delft bunnies! these ones were time consuming lol
Tumblr media
and some delft pigeons too! these turned out nicer than the bunnies, more space to work

These pieces are from a few years back, but I still love seeing them around the house. I keep my keys on the red one.

Been sitting on this one for a little while. Not quite what I hoped for, but it’s grown on me! I made it back in June and pulled out on the 30th, so happy late pride!

A gift I made for a family member. Inspired by minhwa folk paintings. I'm pretty pleased with this one. I also included holes in the foot to allow for hanging. 👐🏼

little sgraffito plates made for my patrons 🤍
ID: three photos of black and white plates held against a green leafy background. the first one has a design of a black bear with fish in its belly, the second is a human and skeleton hand holding one another with a border of daisies, and the third is a magpie with a leafy border.

tuesday afternoon
yayyyy tuesday
listening: haken concert was SO good. incredibly fun. i brought two friends with me and one of them said that he wasn't expecting a metal/rock prog band to be so "sploinky barbershop quartet" re: songs like cockroach king, lol. orchestra concert was sunday and it was good! face did hurt a lot after because this is a youth orchestra that i volunteer with so naturally we need a 90 min rehearsal before the actual concert. pain. but the kids did good. they did a mozart oboe concerto and the soloist was incredible. but also on my own i've been listening to borodin symphony no 1 and 2.
reading: finished volume 2 of mdzs! xue yang is such a loser nightmare failboy. we've entered jin guangyao zone which fucks severely.
watching: dunmesh and klk, again. i love the way dunmeshi is doing backgrounds, they're so detail and delightful to look at. i've also started watching comrade detective with a friend and it's VERY funny. goofy communist buddy cop parody bullshit. channing tatum is in the intro for some reason that i cannot ascertain but makes me laugh anyways.
playing: ran and played dnd! mtg! i've decided i want to put together a mono green deck so if anyone has commander recommendations lmk.
making: yippee making!
trimmed those little teacup experiments, i don't think the shrinkage will be too bad but we'll see. they all have mismatched feet now oops
Tumblr media
started a seder plate for passover! i think at this rate it will be done before the holiday which is exciting. i'm going to do it red with a pomegranate motif. this is the bottom for now, the top is blank and boring so no pic for now.
Tumblr media
pre-bisque work needs to be done on these, the big one is a flower pot for my mom that i'm covering in purple slip and then carving a tree into i think
Tumblr media
finished the sgraffito on this guy, my roommate accidentally knocked a divot in the edge of it at the end of last year so i mirrored it on the other side of the bowl and incorporated it into a design!
Tumblr media
some kiln stuff came out too!
cat yarn bowl!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this bowl was supposed to be a deep, dark green on the outside but i forgot that this kiln is cone 5, not 6! so surprise color but i still like it
Tumblr media
and finally, someone abandoned this little guy so i slapped some glaze on him and took him home. i have a matching cat one that's still kilning. look how precious. i want to put air plants in him. taking name suggestions
Tumblr media
eating: spicy butternut squash pasta with spinach. we made so much of this. i think we finally finished the last of the leftovers today. too many steps for me to do on a tuesday and i have a Moment about it but she took over and it is very good. we used cavatappi which is objectively one of the best pasta shapes out there.
harissa chicken thighs with shallots. yum! all i really gotta say about it. used gochujang because we don't have harissa and it still slammed.
deb smittenkitchen soy glazed chicken. 10/10. goes with Everything. i had it with brussel sprouts over rice, then the next day with that pasta leftovers, and then again yesterday with mac n cheese. took like 10 minutes and slams.
(if anyone wants the nyt recipes lmk and i will post screenshots!)
misc: busy but in the swing of things! gym time has REALLY fallen by the wayside which is not great for my mental health so i'm working on trying to incorporate that back in where i can. but otherwise i am doin pretty good!

Mwahaha i have QUESTIONS
First of all, what's the best seating arrangement? On a couch, at a table, in bed, in a shallow hole in the park?
What's your go-to outfit if you're just doodling? Mine is high-waisted pants and something tucked in
What's your favorite wh ship?
Which jack stauber song/video creeps you out the most (Lima bean man)
Would you rather be able to only drink water, or no plain water ever again?
What do you think the worst job is?
If you're about to get up and an animal rests its head on your foot, are you legally obligated to stay there until they are ready to leave?
What's your favorite medium?
By myself? In MY SPOT on the couch. With friends? In a vaguely menacing circle or half circle. The council has decided death to be far too merciful a punishment. TO THE BABY SHARK WITH FART REVERB CHAMBER YOU GO.
Confused by the question. If you’re asking what I, myself, am wearing while doodling, probably pajamas tbh. If you’re asking what sort of outfit I like to draw characters in, usually just their canon outfit tbh. But I’m an absolute sucker for RIDICULOUS and FABULOUS blazers and coats for my original characters. ✨✨✨
Good ol’ canon FranklyDear. They’re just so cute together!!
I wouldn’t say any of them really creepy me out, so I’ll just share my two favorites, which are The Pumpkin Song (mention of a cat + mecore fr) and Hamantha (she’s just impossible to ignore).
No plain water ever again. If I’m really craving WATER, I’ll just drink water with a liiiittle bit of lemon juice or smthn in it to make it *technically* not “just plain water”.
The worst job? For me, personally, definitely a hooker. I’m asexual- I think that speaks for itself. I also just don’t really like touching people in general yk?
I pet that critter until it’s so happy it starts headbutting my hand. I’m gonna pick it up and carry it with me to wherever I need to go. (Unless it’s outside, in which case I will make that critter the BEST, MOST COMFORTABLE little spot to snuggle EVER and I will cuddle them when I return from The Outside.)
Clay! I’m mostly a sculpture artist and clay is super great to work with because of how easy it is to shape. I’m a bit pickey with my clay though- I don’t really like air dry clays or baking clays because of how weirdly rubbery they are. You can’t make slip (equal parts clay and water-basically clay glue) with them and if you’re building a Thing in pieces, it is an absolute NIGHTMARE to try to attach them securely. Low-fire cone 05-06 white clay and mid-high-fire cone 5-6 speckled buff clay bodies are my favorites to work with because of how soft they are- they make really good slip and it’s easy to build in pieces because they attach super easily with just a little bit of scoring, slipping, and pulling. I can get a ton of detail in firing clays that air dry and baking clays just won’t allow. I also generally prefer the look of glaze to paints on my art. I like creating utilitarian items from clay too, so I need glazed stoneware to make them food safe. Like this cool sgraffito plate I made last year!
Tumblr media
There’s also a ton of amazing decorating techniques that are possible with firing clays, but not air dry or baking clays. One of my favorites is definitely raku, which is where you fire a piece to bisque, then apply raku glaze (special glaze) and fire that. BUT here’s the important part that makes it raku- you have to fire it at an insanely high temperature (750°C) VERY QUICKLY and take it out of the kiln while it’s red-hot. Then you stick it straight into a metal container of some sort with flammable material in the bottom (shredded newspaper, dried leaves, etc.) and let it catch fire. Then you put the lid on the metal container and let it burn until it runs out of air. Now you can either let it sit in there for a while to cool or you can remove it to let it cool- it doesn’t particularly matter. Firing with this method makes the most INSANE glaze patterns and it’s also so gorgeous omg- Here have some examples:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s really pretty and super fun to do because it’s not often that you get to set your art on fire and have it turn gay. I’ve done exactly one raku firing and it was one of the absolute best things I’ve ever done. SO fun.
Anyway that was quite the ceramics rant there… 👀

Mugshot Monday - "Brown Sgraffito" coffee mug by Gordon C. Krause with Snowshoe Seasonal Blend by Peace Coffee
This coffee mug was made by my mother’s cousin Gordy Krause. He’s an awesome human and an incredible potter.
I believe he has officially "retired" now from his ceramics business in Sheboygan, WI.
This 2008 mug has the same stain as our wedding gift from Gordy and his wife Jean given to use waaaaaay back in 1995.
It's beautiful plate with a cross and rings sgraffito decoration along with our former names and wedding date stamped at the top and bottom. I love it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's not a complete match, but close enough considering our wedding plate is 13 years older than this mug.
Growing up surrounded by his mugs, plates, lamps, and mirrors my parents and other relatives have purchased over the years has subconsciously influenced me my entire life.
And now I love that I have my own Gordy Krause collection to admire.
My mom said Gordy did all of this sgraffito freehand and somehow he'd make it all match up when he was finished carving. Amazing.
I find myself seeing his work in a new context now that I'm taking pottery classes and trying to learn how to make my own mugs. I'm even more in awe!
Cheers! ☕️ 🤩
Be sure to see some of my other Gordy C. Krause cups.
