So I calculated the exact screen time for all the love square ships in the Shanghai special...
Back again! With the Shanghai Special! If you haven't seen my previous post, the link to that is here. For the uninitiated, here are...
Some Ground Rules
Both characters of the ship must be present in the scene for it to count as love square screen time.
At least one of the characters need to be reacting to the presence of the other or doing something with them.
If one of the characters believe that they are talking with the alter ego of the other character it will be counted as screen time for that particular ship
In case of group interactions involving the two characters, it will only be counted if the two characters are specifically interacting with the other or if special focus is given to them.
Screen Time Distribution
For a 56-minute-long special, there was surprisingly very little love square screen time, Adrienette not even getting an entire minute. Maricat and Ladrien are totally absent which is unsurprising and Ladynoir has the most screen time as usual, 73.1 % of the total screen time and Adrienette having 26.9% of the screen time.
Tumblr media
In terms of how it affected the overall screen time, it isn't much with Adrienette increasing 0.1% and Ladrien decreasing 0.1%.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
This was a very short post, since it was just one special but next one is going to much longer since its season 3. Feel free to leave any observations you made from these pie charts that I may have missed. See you next time!

The Chinese Prodigious and Zealous
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Chinese Prodigious is an ancient medallion hidden away in Shanghai, China. Hosted within it are eight renlings embodying different human values, allowing those that posses them to transform into their respective animals.
Tumblr media
Guarding this Prodigious is a kaire named Mei Shi, who is tied to a magical yellow orb called a Zealous. Mei Shi will test those seeking the Prodigious, and grant those they choose the title of Renren. Renrens are given both the Prodigious and the Zealous, and are free to use the magic within.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When lacking a chosen Mei Shi will merge with his Zealous, allowing him to switch between two forms, both based on a lion. His companion form is a small kwami-like being who can easily hide and observe the world unseen. Their champion form is more humanoid, being that of a giant metallic statue built to fight.

The one thing I don't like about the Shanghai Special is that it's the ONLY one without an iconic Adrino moment. Like, I know that it shouldn't be my top priority or whatever but. The New York special had the Bus Scene. The Paris Special had the Pool Scene. Like WHERE WAS THE ADRINO GUYS. At least have Adrien MENTION NINO :(

Miraculous-- Purification Power
I’m sure other people have mentioned this somewhere before, but of the many, MANY things that bug me in some way about Miraculous Ladybug (but for some reason I keep watching because apparently I enjoy hating on the show) is that one of the big powers is to De-Evilize/Purify the Akuma Butterflies. Now in itself having to Purify the Akuma makes a degree of sense, but the reason they have to do so only ever comes up once, in a flashback episode that happens several episodes after the premiere episode. Not only that but the definition of Purification is ‘To Remove Contaminants’ and is often done by destroying or neutralizing the contaminant substances if direct removal is too difficult/impossible.
So two things: 1) Why even make Purification a thing if you are never going to make it an issue? Other than Stoneheart Ladybug never fails to Purify the Akuma and then it was only because of lack of information not ability and the Purification action is apparently very easy and foolproof. 2) Why is Ladybug the one with the Purification power if her power is to Create? I can’t help but feel the inclusion of the Purification requirement was just to give Ladybug more importance and make Chat Noir more dependent on her because without Ladybug’s ability to Purify-- a power that in my opinion lends more to the idea of Destruction-- Akuma Chat Noir can not win any fights... unless he refrains from using his Cataclysm for the entire fight and uses it purely to Purify the Akuma-- which adimittingly is an issue that will be resolved when Chat get’s his ‘adult’ powers and can use his Cataclysm multiple times.
So the Purification aspect never comes up and only exists to increase the importance of Ladybug and decrease the importance of Chat Noir and showcase how the two very much are NOT equals no matter what the lore says.
On Another Note: Ladybug leaves Paris twice in the specials without giving her Miraculous to someone else like in Hack-San. One of those times she just tells Chat to deal with Akuma himself and the other... Okay I never watched Shanghai so I don’t know if she knew Chat wasn’t going to be in Paris but I’ll say she did know. In BOTH of those cases what exactly was she expecting to happen? In the NY special she gets mad at Chat Noir for leaving Paris-- understandable since he said he was staying-- but even if he had stayed he’d have been unable to deal with any Akuma or SentiMonsters because the writers decided Chat can’t fight Sentimonsters (the ONE TIME his Cataclysm doesn’t cause physical damage to the target is when he attacks the enemies he should be able to one shot without moral consequence) and he can’t Purify Akuma or Amoks or fix the damage caused by them. Meaning in the NY special Ladybug just wanted Chat to die basically because remember she didn’t even learn of the Sentimonster attack that happens in that special until like, an hour or more after it ended AND she didn’t bring the Horse with her so she couldn’t have gone back to help anyway. It is only luck on her part that Shadowmoth is also in NY and she ends up being in the right place to fight him. Then in the Shanghai special she KNOWS Chat isn’t going to be in Paris DOESN’T know Shadowmoth is going to be in Shanghai himself, and it is only by pure luck for her AGAIN that she didn’t leave the city to be destroyed by him.
Now, if Chat gets his ‘adult’ powerset before the end of the show he SHOULD lose a lot of his dependence on Ladybug for fights as he has more potential to just brute force wins and can take care of the Akuma himself... it wouldn’t happen like that because Astruc thinks that making your female characters competent means making your male characters useless, but logically that’s how it would work.
What do you all think?

HELLO ALL. BEHOLD. REDESIGNED FEI.
I had a lot of fun redesigning her. Fei is by far one of my favorite ML characters, unironically. I like the lil lady that wants to murder what can I say. I wanted to give a bit more of a sickly unwell vibe going on with her civilian form considering she lives off of stealing and street conning presumably.
As for RenRen, I just, I just really, didn't wanna use, the red- yellow- and black colors man I'm sorry just, I, said no. So Instead I took inspiration from Glamrock Fre-I mean- Mei Shi. Yah.
Hope you like! This is the design I'll also be using for my PN au.

Why is the Prodigious canonically more powerful than the Miraculouses? Like Nooroo full on says: "It is for good reason that the Prodigious was abandoned in favor of the Miraculous! It was secured in that cave because it is too powerful, too dangerous!" and I just... don't see it?
Like don't get me wrong, being able to transform into animals is an awesome power, but how is it more powerful and more dangerous than the Miraculouses? The Peacock alone can create animals to fight and many other beings, we've seen the Butterfly give the power of shapeshifting to one not even using a Miraculous, and the elemental powers one gets in dragon form is the same as the Dragon Miraculous. And all of this is not considering the many other powers the canon Miraculouses can do, and who knows what the other Miraculouses not seen in the show can do as well!
Then to actually use the Prodigious you have to possess the value each Renling has to even transform! With the Miraculouses anyone with any intent or any values can transform and use the powers by just knowing the right words, words they can order the kwami to tell them with no resistance! Kwamis are forced to the whims of their holders with just a few words, while the Prodigious gets a whole powerful guardian to protect it and deem who is worthy to wield it? Why don't the Miraculouses get that level of protection?
Then finally with the Miraculouses we have the Wish with Tikki and Plagg's Miraculouses. You're telling me the ability to completely destroy the universe and recreate it at one's own whims is less powerful than shapeshifting? That the shapeshifting powers are the ones that needed to be sealed away in the cave but literal universe-ending powers didn't?

One thing that has really interested me as of late has been the development of the Miraculous Shanghai special. Looking at all the old promo art, it seems to have changed a lot. For starters, it was originally called "The Chinese Legend" and was seemingly going to have Master Fu in it
Tumblr media
(Makes me wonder if it was initially going to relate to the Order of the Guardians in some way since it doesn't give a clear location)
Also, it seems that there was going to be what appears to be a spirit dragon that looks like it would've played a major role with how often it appears in promo art
Tumblr media
On top of that, when I went to the Wiki to get those images, I found these
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I honestly don't know what to say about them other than that the New York special influence was strong.
I could definitely see that the Shanghai Special was potentially more about the Order and Fu. Makes sense given it's related to China. And if it potentially would've been an exploration on Fu, his origins, and on the Order.
Which makes me wonder what the earlier plan was, especially as it doesn't feel like they really had sentimonsters planned from the start, and I don't know about you guys, but I didn't like Fu's origins. So I wonder if they had something else in mind and made changes. As with most of ML's concepts, those ideas were probably better.
As I do think the Chinese Special should've been the place to reveal and introduce the Zodiac Miraculous and where they came from (as it didn't make Fu look good having 16-17 Miraculous and gave out the very two HM wanted), that dragon could've been a protector of them, seeking a worthy Guardian to take on the Zodiac. Could even be the dragon kwami spiritually manifested. Which a whole Zodiac of powerful Miraculous sealed away makes more sense than the Prodigious that just has you transforming into 8 animals, which you can't even control unless you're virtuous. Very dangerous indeed.
Or that dragon it could've been a rare instance of just seeing another magical creature, work off Thomas' older claim that there was other magic out there than just Miraculous.
As for the heroes, I am kinda glad they didn't make it in. I don't like those designs. I can roll with the idea that every country/state/city could have their own hero, but they really do just roll out too much.
Speaking of Specials, I remember that, supposedly, that we were going to see the Turtle's power in the Christmas Special, and hearing that Chris Master was the original Christmas Special, I wonder if that was originally where we were supposed to see Carapace for the first time, and Nino was going to be the first temporary hero to be seen. And that would've been his time to really shine. Though it also could've been our first intro to Jade, seeing what Turtle could do in a fight, and potentially Chat's way of meeting Fu (though as Jade instead), and maybe that's the point where Fu's like, ok, I really am too old for this, you guys do temp heroes.
Either option sounds better than what we got in canon.
