I’d like to see some yandere romantic concept for Sunset Shimmer from MLP please! I love her so much I need something for her! 😍

Can confirm as a fellow Sunset Shimmer fan I adore her too. Been awhile since I've seen Equestria Girls so I'm sorry if she's OOC. This concept takes place in the Human World since I don't do much of those.

Took a classic yandere take with this. Not fully proofread, expect mistakes!

Yandere! Sunset Shimmer Concept

Pairing: Romantic

Possible Trigger Warnings: Gender-Neutral Darling, Obsession, Manipulation, Fear of abandonment implied, Jealousy, Stalking, Clingy behavior, Violence, Threats/Threats of murder, Brief blood mention, Kidnapping, Isolation, Forced relationship.

Obviously Sunset Shimmer's yandere type changes depending on if she's a villain or not.

I'll be looking at reformed Sunset Shimmer in this concept, so her after the first movie.

She is the leader of the group when Twilight isn't in the human world.

She's in charge of any magic spikes or magical problems in general.

She knows not a lot of people like her due to what she's done... but she's trying to get better!

She's trying to build her confidence and acts very kind to those around her.

She writes to Twilight often about her findings.

She's intelligent and compassionate... but can lose her composure and temper easily.

Sunset Shimmer tries her best to be a good person... she even manages to make a new friend.

You!

My idea was that Sunset Shimmer's obsession makes her relapse into her old behavior a bit.

She's better now but occasionally might find herself giving into a more selfish and manipulative side.

Her relapsing is unnoticeable to her at first... but soon she realizes it the more she's around you.

When she met you she realized you two get along well.

You often hang out at each other's homes and play games, talk, and just enjoy each other.

Soon Sunset Shimmer starts to develop feelings for you....

You have no clue about her true origins as a Unicorn but she doesn't really plan on telling you... right off.

She's still curious and stunned by her new feelings towards you.

She... she hasn't felt so warm towards anyone before... let alone like this.

She struggles on if she should let Twilight know about such a thing.

Speaking of which... Sunset Shimmer, as Twilight's student, may have a similar yandere type to the princess.

She wants to learn all about her new feelings, she notes everything down about you...

Perhaps even follows you around to an obsessive degree.

She plays it all off as just being clingy.

After all... she's been through a lot... so surely you'll forgive her, right?

Originally doesn't mind you around her group of friends... but soon she ends up jealous.

She may eventually try writing to Twilight... saying she feels overly obsessive and controlling towards you...

However... maybe midway through the letter... she stops.

Why should Twilight know?

What if Twilight sees her affection for you as a bad thing.

What if she takes you away?

As a result, Sunset Shimmer never tells Twilight.

Sun Shim's friends get concerned when they see her always ask about you.

She even glares at people around you... a fire igniting within her whenever she sees others speak to you.

Eventually Sunset Shimmer may give into her darker desires.

The demonic grasp on her heart appears again.

Soon she's threatening others around you and slowly controlling you to spend more time with her.

She tries to ignore the violent thoughts she has... but soon she may act upon those too.

Eventually she confesses to you... opening her heart to you in hopes you'll accept.

If you don't... she doesn't take it well.

In fact... her heart tells her to take you.

To tie you up... to lock you away...

To hide all the evidence of her obsession... no matter how much blood is on her hands.

She apologizes next time she comes to your home... knocking you out and catching you softly.

She doesn't tell a soul once she takes you home and sits you on a bed.

Twilight doesn't need to know... her friends don't need to know...

If anyone asks she'll get rid of them.

You two are meant to be together... she just knows it.

Her dark desires pour into her heart once again... she can't help but kiss you softly when she sees you wake up.

To your dismay... it doesn't seem like she changed at all from before... she's still a selfish demon who only cares for herself in the end.

Maybe it’s an odd time to bring it up, but it is Valentine’s Day. Sonamy and Sonally have been one of the biggest ship wars in the franchise. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem to be as much of a thing as it used to be, but there is still occasional bashing or something. After some deep thought, I think I came up with an answer to make both sides happy.

It has nothing to do with Amy or Sally. It depends on the VERSION of Sonic.

When you think about it, Archie/SatAM Sonic and Mainline Sonic are actually pretty different. With SatAM and Archie, Sonic was born in a monarchy and had a steady home, even when fighting in a war. He’s used to being in one place. He also fought Robonik/Eggman because he had to, freeing the planet and restoring the kingdom. As for the games and IDW, Sonic travels the world and fights Eggman because he wants to, not because he has to. It may not seem like much, but they are key factors. These different lifestyles show more of who would be a better partner for him. Sally has responsibilities as a princess and leader. Even if Eggman is defeated for good, she will still be bound to these duties. Amy, on the other hand, is more adventurous and loves trying new things. She may settle down at times, but she still loves to travel. Both girls are compassionate and ready to help others and can even take the lead when they have to, but go about it in different ways. Sonally is a case of opposites attract and Sonamy is more kindred spirits.

While Sonic and Sally clash at times over how to plan, they work together to pull them off. They are more at ease when they don’t have to be on missions, and more overt about dating. They are also childhood friends in these continuities, knowing each other longer than their other friends. This led to their feelings becoming stronger over time. Sally has grown more into being on the battlefield, but usually works more behind the scenes or deals with the more technical or planning while Sonic takes most of the action.

Sonic and Amy both love adventure and sometimes act before they think. They also go out of their way to help others without a second thought. Amy may be a big romantic, but her relationship with Sonic nowadays is more on the subtle side and no less important and sweet. She used to chase after Sonic, but wasn’t so blinded to put her own desires ahead of others. Amy is also one of the first people Sonic met in his fights against Eggman. Amy also trained herself to be stronger to stand by Sonic’s side so she could protect him like how he protects her.

I do want to talk about the X Years Later/Light Mobius arcs in Archie. In that timeline, Sonic and Sally are married and rule as king and queen. While at times he’s not always happy with being king, he loves Sally enough to accept it. He was even willing to be her royal consort until they could be wed in Archie issue #124 (which is probably the most out of character moment compared to his game counterpart ever). And while we never see Amy in those arcs, Ian Flynn has said a few times on the Bumblekast he thinks Amy would be traveling around with the Time Stones. I thought that was a cool idea, and that feels more like the kind of life the mainline Sonic would want to have.

I kind of feel obliged to bring up Elise. Most people may not like it, and I prefer them as friends, but she was also written as a love interest. Anyway, in one scene Elise asks Sonic if he’ll leave after Dr. Eggman and his plans for Soleanna are stopped, which the hedgehog confirms. Despite what feelings he may have for Elise, he’s not going to give up his lifestyle just to be with her. And I do not mean to make it sound mean, it’s just who he is. A free spirit, free as the wind. And in Sonic and the Black Knight, he is revealed to be the true King Arthur, but he doesn’t accept it. He’s uncomfortable with how the other knights bow to him. I find it hard to believe this Sonic would want that kind of life for anyone, even if Sally was part of the main continuity. She wouldn't give up her duties for him either. A steady relationship or royal lifestyle just isn’t for Sonic’s game counterpart. In issue #2 of IDW, Amy knows Sonic can't be held down and respects his decisions. She loves Sonic for who he is and doesn’t want to change him. Instead, she’s fine with just going on adventures with him. Living in the moment. It’s not the life she initially wanted with him, but it’s enough for now. It does feel like they have become closer after Forces. The game was far from the best, but the premise of spending six month apart is a good way to build something up for them.

The reboot in Archie kind of proves this point about the relationships as well, albeit unintentionally. While the main reason is the new mandates were that game characters could not date, Sonic and Amy felt a lot closer than before. Sonic and Sally were also confirmed to only have a platonic relationship in the new timeline. This is due to Sonic’s past now being closer to his game counterpart rather than SatAM. He’s still part of the Freedom Fighters, but still has his world traveling roots. For example, he came to Mobotropolis after Eggman took over instead of living in the city at the time.

Sonamy and Sonally are both valid ships and deserve support. But don’t hate on the other when it’s the version of Sonic that truly matters for deciding who is the better match for him.

TEEN WOLF BRAINROT

so, i've been rewatching teen wolf bc apparently netflix hates us europeans and it will be removed on may 31st and here are a few of my opinions TM

scott is actually a very good main character. listen, i got into this fandom when i was older, so i probably don't understand why there is this trend of hating scott, but he's a valid MC! he shows an example of positive masculinity that is honestly so refreshing to see in modern media: he's kind, compassionate, always optimistic but not stupidly so, has an amazing relationship with his mum AND his friends, he's not afraid to show emotions and cry. honestly a very healthy, albeit traumatised, young man. yes, he did stupid stuff for the girl he liked, and yes he misjudged a few situations, but please, remind me, how old is he supposed to be? 16? 17? 18? yeah. i did worse things at his age.

scott and stiles come from working class families!!! they have money problems!! it's honestly so refreshing to see teenagers discuss money in a supernatural/fantasy tv show. it doesn't usually happens and I've found it refreshing because it's something that usually happen between irl teenagers.

i don't get sterek. really, really don't. maybe it's bc i've watched the show through a gen z lens (meaning the media and the culture (read: THE INTERNET) when i watched the show were influenced more by gen z than millennials' values) but i really don't get it. and the age difference makes me uncomfortable. (same thing with parrish and lydia, SHE'S A MINOR DUDE, there's a reason people don't like cops istg) SOMEONE EXPLAIN STEREK TO ME PLEASE

in fics stiles and scott's personalities are often swapped: stiles is the caring one, the pack mum, scott is the one with homicidal tendencies. like, my dudes, the fact that scott is a GOOD person through and through is the reason he's a true alpha. also the reason we, as viewers, like stiles is bc he's sarcastic and more morally ambiguous than scott (not really, but you get it, he cares more about himself and his immediate friends, the others can die, scott instead want to save everyone period), it's like taking away the thing that makes stiles stiles

malia and stiles were SO cute, i didn't expect to like them so much, but when they broke up my heart shattered

stydia is everything i want in a ship and i will not accept any criticism on it, it's literally one of the only straight ships i like. you have the slowburn, the malewife x girlboss trope, the he fell first but she fell harder, the mutual pining. it literally checks all of my boxes

isaac was such a cool character and he and scott had an amazing dynamic, like come on, they had something going on between them

kira is a badass. that's it, that's the comment. i like her so much

derek's development is one of the best. i couldn't stand him in season 1, but in s4 he became one of my favourite characters. but i think this has more to do with the fact that they aged him up? he was supposed to be in his early 20s in s1, but then they aged him up in s3? well, anyway, i liked how he literally wised up, stepping into the role of a teacher and guide instead of a leader, it suits him so much better (and i'm sure it's less stressful)

peter is such a charmingly evil bastard. i hate him, but i love him at the same time.

thiam is the best ship in the show, i don't care if it's canon or not. i've read airplanes, it's canon to me

we would've liked (simped for) s5 theo more if he had the same haircut he had in 6b. he was just stupidly hot.

allison and lydia should've kissed and so malia and kira. give me my wlw couples.

Tiflrr

It was a known fact the Etuwa was a warrior at heart. Being a tsahik is an honorable position to have, to lead her people and be the speak of Eywa. After the tragic death of her mother, Etuwa took on her position, learned everything there to be a Tsahik, and lead alongside with her father, the olo’eyktan of the Aranahe clan. But if Etuwa was to be given a choice, she wouldnt be the Tsahik.

She would rather be a warrior.

And everyone can secretly agree. If anything, it would suit Etuwa more if she were to be the olo’eykte of their clan. But if she was to be the olo’eykte, then who would be her tsahik? A clan cannot be lead without two people. It takes the balance of two leaders to take care of their people. And while many may not have a clue, Etuwa does.

Eutwa knows exactly who can fit the role of not just the tsahik, but the role of a perfect mate, partner, her secret love, Tiflrr.

Like an Atokirina, Tiflrr gracefully appeared to Etuwa on the darkest day of her life. After the sudden death of her mother, Etuwa lost sight of her path, she was silent, introverted, and just as depressed as her father. Not even the bright and dramatic Nefika was able to lift her spirits. Etuwa was drained of her color, her ambitions, her light. But like all bad storms, a sun is sure to brighten after the chaos.

And the sun was Tiflrr.

Tiflrr is an amazing aranahe na’vi. Artistic, compassionate, and a visionary. You could say she is the softer, more quiet version of nefika.

Tiflrr was everything Etuwa searched for. Her light, her laugh, everything. Etuwa was rough and ambitious while Tiflrr was more soft and passionate. It made Eutwa happy how well they balance each other. Though Etuwa wishes they could perhaps be more than mere friends.

“Tiflrr!!” Etuwa calls out for the na’vi in question. Getting off from her ikran, tiflrr goes over to etuwa as they hug in a tight embrace. “Did you go to collect more seeds? Why didn't you tell me? I would have joined you” Etuwa whines a bit. Frowning that she missed potential time to spend with her favorite person.

Tiflrr couldn't help but release a cute giggle, “and have you miss your tsahik duties? I could never”. Etuwa blushed a bit, basking in the beautiful smile tiflrr holds. Placing her hand on tiflrr’s cheek, Etuwa looks into her eyes, pure joy and love is all she feels for the lovely na’vi. “If I could, I would gladly give up being tsahik if it meant spending more time with you”.

This earned etuwa a slap on the head. “Don't talk such nonsense you skxawng! Being a tsahik is both an honor and a major duty. Giving it up would mean giving up what your mother worked hard for. Don't throw all that away '' tiflrr scolded etuwa like she was a child. But she was right, she can't say such silly things like that. Etuwa’s mind says one thing, but her heart says another.

Etuwa’s feelings for tiflrr grows stronger everyday. And she isn't sure how much longer she can keep it in.

“Come on, you silly head!” tiflrr calls out to etuwa. Grabbing her hand, Tiflrr leads Etuwa to a large field of flowers. So many blooming beautifully and perfect to weave something nice. Wild ikrans flying freely up in the sky and the kinglors having their feed. It looked so peaceful. So perfect.

“Look, it seems new ones have hatched not too long ago. '' Tiflrr points out to some young flying kinglor. One took interest and landed on her hand, admiring its cuteness, tiflrr gently pets it. “So cute…” tiflrr mutters.

“Yes…very cute” Etuwa agrees, but it wasn't just the kinglor moth that she found cute.

Moments like this Etuwa wishes they can last forever and ever. No worries, no responsibility, just existing and having an adventure with Tiflrr. With tiflrr, Etuwa can feel anything is possible and can do so much more.

It was clear as day for everyone to see how close Etuwa is to tiflrr. But more so now in recent days. Purposely avoiding her father and other responsibilities to be with tiflrr. While it is cute to chase around the person that makes you happy, it is also a bit annoying. So annoying that Nefika of all people had to talk to Etuwa about it.

“Child, while I would love to advocate your goal, it seems you leave behind a long trail of uncompleted tasks. This is unlike you Etuwa, come tell me, what is on your mind?” Nefika asks Etuwa one day. After Etuwa blatantly left her father talking away to an open space in favor of meeting with tiflrr, Ka’nat secretly asked nefika to talk to Etuwa, try to understand why the sudden absence.

Sitting near a river, where the sounds of the water calms her nerves, Etuwa starts to talk. “Tiflrr. Lately, when I spend time with her, my heart beats mightier than ever. It races and twists, my mind becomes haze and all I can think about with tiflrr and just being with her. It is like….like everything is fine. With tiflrr, I am not tsahik, I am not a warrior, not a leader, I am just Etuwa to her. And I like that. I like tiflrr and how she sees me”.

Nefika couldn't help but stare at astonishment towards Etuwa.

“Etuwa child, Tiflrr, what exactly does she do to have you think this way?” she asks. Etuwa smiles as she explains.

“Tiflrr treats me like a normal person. Yes she would berate me and constantly remind me of my position but never pushes it. Always eager to take me somewhere, showing me a new spot. Tiflrr is very observative, kind, gentle, sweet. She is all that and more. Oh how could I forget her knowledge in plants? She is very skilled in in vast creations like tea, medicine, paint, making sweets out of them. I enjoy that about her…and more”.

The genuine love and care that holds in Etuwa’s voice helped Nefika make a certain conclusion.

“Etuwa, is it possible that you are…”

Tiflrr was in her home with massive ideas of what to make from the freshly picked flowers she found on the edge of the kinglor forest. They smelled lovely and seemed of fine quality to make baskets or for food. Either way can go.

Maybe perhaps make something for Etuwa.

Just thinking about her makes Tiflrr feel so happy and bubbly on the inside. Everytime they are together, the girl does her absolute best to compose herself whenever Etuwa is near. But she can't help it! Etuwa is so fierce and strong, and her beauty! A wonderful woman the tsahik is. While Tiflrr is always happy that Etuwa is choosing to spend time with her over the duties that occupy her attention, Tiflrr can't help but feel guilty yet selfish to be with Etuwa. Is that so wrong?

Hard to see. However, speak of the na’vi. There was a knock at the entrance of her home, Tiflrr goes and sees Etuwa there!

“My friend, come! What brings you here?” Tiflrr asks happily. Already preparing Etuwa’s favorite tea. Etuwa happily accepts a cup full, not caring how hot it is, the tsahik drinks it down in one go.

“Oh my” this caught tiflrr by surprise.

“We need to talk…and it is very important…”

This is her one chance. After heavy and considerable talk with Nefika, even with her father, Etuwa had a goal, a mission.

To confess to tiflrr.

And it was easier said than done. It took so much mental tole that Etuwa wasn't sure if she was confident enough to do it. But things are not done, or changed, tiflrr would still have be as friends. Yet the tsahik wants to be more than that.

“What is it Etuwa? Don't leave me so nervous” Tiflrr giggles, her sweet smile melting Etuwa’s heart. So, taking a deep breath, she tightly holds Tiflrr’s hands into hers. Such soft hands, no marks of anything. No cuts, bruises, nothing. Perfect hands.

“Tiflrr, for a long time, you have been by my side. Through my ups and downs, my best and my worst. You have always been there for me. You have been there in ways no one could. Not even my father or others. You are the rays of sunshine to my dark skies. Shooing away anything that could cause me trouble. Your presence alone soothes me. Just by being near you is enough to make my day. Tiflrr, I love you. I have loved you for so long yet I did not say anything until now. I was, still am, afraid of your rejection…”

Taking another deep breath, Etuwa’s heart still pounding hard as the drums, she continues.

“I See you Tiflrr. For all that you are, for all that you will be and is. And I love every single bit of you. I love how you accept me. Despite my position, despite how I can be. You accept me into your life, your heart. But you only ever see me as a friend. I desire to be more than that….my question is…Tiflrr, will you let me be your lover?”

As if the weight was lifted off of her shoulders, only to be replaced by newer weight. Etuwa confessed, spoke every word with full meaning and sincerity. The real challenge is, will Tiflrr accept?

No words could ever describe with Tiflrr was feeling at the moment. It was as if time had stopped. All she could do was stare at Etuwa’s lovely face. Seeking to see if what Etuwa just said and done was a lie, a joke. But all Tiflrr saw was the honest truth. Has Eywa finally answered her wishes?

Since words couldn't do justice to what Tiflrr feels, she does the next best thing.

Grabbing Etuwa by the face, she pulls her in for a full, deep, passionate kiss. A kiss that answers her question, a kiss to reciprocate her feelings. A kiss to mark Etuwa as her’s until their last dying breath.

Alright, final thoughts on Brisingr.

You know what half the book was dwarven politics but I ate that shit up.

The more I read these again the more I appreciate the nuance of Eragon's character. It's super rare for me to like a main protagonist as much as I like him, but he has so many things going on. He's heroic, but in a deeply existentialist way, which leads him to be a bit cruel/callous towards his brother. He is smart and a quick learner, both academically and on his feet, but he does and thinks some of the stupidest things sometimes. He was forced to grow up so fast, so while he often comes across as mature and self-assured, internally he is still just a kid, or perhaps a very, very young man, and that kid part of him still shines through sometimes. He does and will do what he has to do to help the world, but he is constantly surprised to find new avenues of guilt when confronted with various consequences of his actions, but he still presses on. He is still learning his place in life not only as a dragon rider and a hero, but just as a person in general, and I think that's so cool and interesting to read! And he's also dealing with the trauma of the everything that's happening to him, but doesn't quite yet seem to realize that he isn't alone in his feelings. He is a dork, and I love him, and I want to be his friend, and I want him to accrue a whole squad of older sibling figures to help him through his stuff.

Along the lines of trauma, I hope he and Roran get to talk about this stuff. They both have moments of berating themselves over being weak for having strong feelings about killing and participating in a war, and I wish they would talk to each other and realize they were not alone. ... Murtagh too but that's just wishful thinking. I'll just have to write that myself I suppose.

Saphira is also so good queen of my heart and my soul she is beauty she is grace if she were a human she would rip apart a rat with her bare hands and teeth and do a kegstand immediately afterwards with the blood still dripping down her face but her makeup would be FLAWLESS while she did it ❤️

This felt like the first book that really drove the point home of how close the two of them are, because this is the first time they had to be truly separated from each other. Every time they reunited and they were just so filled with joy and love I just 🥺

As always- Murtagh deserves better!!! He and Thorn!!! He is in this position because he was too compassionate for Eragon (being led to the Varden), and then Thorn (swearing fealty to save him), and no one really cares about him but he still hopes and he still loves!!! Obviously, like, being on opposite sides of the conflict no one is going to not try to kill him, they kind of don't have a choice, but... Damn. I won't say too much more about him until after Inheritance but like. Damn. Justice for my husband.

On that note, the absolute betrayal he must have felt upon finding out that Oromis and Glaedr existed. Granted, by him becoming a dragon rider it was already too late for them to help him, but still. It's just kind of a tragic circumstance that everyone was so powerless in this situation, and like... Being literally possessed by Galbatorix for a bit there was. Hmm. Bad. I'm sure we'll be dissecting THAT in the new book.

It makes me wonder how much of this situation could have been prevented if the elves and the dwarves weren't so consistently self-serving. I think that's what makes Nasuada such an effective leader in comparison to them. She will get shit done, and she will set aside pride whenever she needs to to achieve the best results. Now, she has her flaws, which I know are explored more in Inheritance, but I can understand her constant frustration with the other kingdoms refusal to help or share important secrets that could have helped them sooner/prevented bloodshed.

And as far as secrets go... I don't know. It's hard to gauge "should have" or "shouldn't have" with most of the things Oromis and Glaedr neglected to tell Eragon and Saphira (or anyone), but the eldunarí feels like the most cut and dry. I guess they weren't anticipating Thron hatching but like. If that's the source of Galbatorix's power... It might have been useful for literally anyone to know about that before now. Arya didn't even know, for god's sake.

Speaking of Arya, I like her way way more this read through!!! And I do not ship her and Eragon literally at all sorry I'm a hater ❤️

RIP Oromis though sucks that you died.

avatrice is just so perfect so good. it makes so much sense that after all the cruelty she experienced ava would fall for bea who's so methodical and patient, bea who's so deliberately thoughtful and kind and compassionate. and after so many year of practicing control bea would fall for someone who lives so unrestrained with so much joy and curiosity. ugh just meant for each other. and a bit of a queen/knight thing going on too

Oof, anon, that's so well said! They match sooo perfectly, it really couldn't be anyone but Bea for Ava and Ava for Bea. The parts that contrast, the parts that complement, the way they like each other as people even outside all that.

It had to be Bea who first pointed out to Ava to think outside of herself, but so fairly and gently that then she was the one Ava turned to for comfort, earning her trust that quickly and keeping it. And it wasn't a one way thing, their relationship isn't just Bea being the cool, infallible one who helps Ava, when Bea was struggling with being gay and the perception of it, it was Ava who was so accepting it prompted that frankly super romantic "It was everyone but you."

What's more, even as they keep these core tenets of their personalities, you can see how each affects and slowly changes the other. Bea absolutely grounds Ava and has taught and trained her to be more mature and patient and a better leader, but also provides stability and a home base, a partner she knows she can count on, invaluable after everything she's gone through. Bea is more willing to try new things, more open to what might make her happy instead of living only for the church and accepting their harshest judgments.

This has been the culmination of decades of subtext f/f ships that seemed so perfect if only the writers would go there, best friends, enemies, rivals, partners, narrative foils of all kinds, and every time we'd say "if that were a man and a woman they'd go there" but they weren't and they didn't, not until now. Finally it feels like what we're seeing and that the writers are writing is on the same page.

I'd also like to give credit to the three things that for me were so necessary to this ship's success. First, it's main character/main character. I've always talked about this, right, the trajectory of canon f/f over time, starting with temporary sweeps stuff, then guest stars, then side characters, and even when including mains and leads, often the love interest was still a side character who might leave at any point. But this is as main/main as you can get! And doesn't it show? The amount of time, story, development? Whole plot decisions hinging on their feelings for each other? It's incomparable.

Second, the fact that they did a multi-season slow burn. I've talked about this before as well, the vanishly small number of shows where characters who were introduced in one season get together in another. Even smaller when both the characters were in the first episode, indicating their importance to the show, being a pivotal character from the start. It pays off in such a rewarding way when we get that anticipation and building of tension and speaks to the commitment and patience from the writers in doing it over such a long arc. Everything we know about these characters and their relationship we were allowed to observe over a significant amount of time and get truly invested in. Not to criticize those that write the full arc within a season, especially in these cancel-happy times, but y'all can't tell me this didn't feel AMAZING.

And lastly, for the most part this remains a very character-first kinda show, and I have not a single criticism for how they handled Ava, Bea, or Avatrice (though I'm not happy about certain other aspects). What we know about Ava and Bea, their traits that you can list so clearly, they're such fully formed characters and their actions feel so organic and rooted in what we already know about them. That's been so vital in appreciating their whole romance, it's always just made so much sense.

Oh, the queen/knight thing! I didn't even think about that but it's definitely there, and my favorite kind, where the knight character is awesome and protective, but the queen is fighting for the knight just as hard in her own way (see also: Dani/Grace >_>).

This turned out to be truly special, really hoping the show gets one more season at least to cap things off.

Arkhelios Adventures

"Aunt Edana, how are you? How's Adam doing? He's missed a lot of classes, but when I saw him in the hall the other day, he waved at me, so that must mean he's okay, right?"

"Greetings, Prince Jasper," Edana replied, bowing to the future king of Strangetown and one of the brightest students in the Pleasantview Academy of Magic. "I seek an audience with His Highness Leonid Toyonaga."

"Uncle Leo? He's upstairs, I can get him for you if you want."

Edana raised an eyebrow at the prince's responses. She folded her arms sternly.

"You haven't been studying your protocols," she chided, earning an embarrassed shrug from the teen. "Your grandfather would be appalled at my welcome. I'm not Aunt Edana when I first arrive at the castle, and you know that. Formal greetings come first and then we can drop the formalities."

"You're right," Jasper sighed. "But it's all so stupid. Anyway, how's Adam? Why are you wanting to see Uncle Leo? Can you help me with my potion homework?"

"Shouldn't you be in class?" Edana asked. She mentally scanned the academic calendar, looking for a holiday she'd missed. She didn't recall a day off today.

"Grandpa signed me out," Jasper answered, already looking bored. "It's the anniversary of Great-Grandma's death tomorrow and Grandpa is having a service to remember her. We all have to show up to it, but I have a mini speech to memorize. I'd rather be at school; all my friends are there."

"As the future king, you need to learn your place in the world and how to honour the old ways," Edana insisted. "When your grandfather and mother are gone, Strangetown will look to you. The king must balance the country and ensure that the proper order of things is respected. The vampires, the witches, and demons, you must lead them all."

"Uncle Leo's upstairs," Jasper replied, looking annoyed at the lecture. "He's doing his meditations though, so he's going to be pissed if you interrupt him."

"Watch your language, Your Highness," Edana said, her brain automatically correcting the poor behaviour just like Jasper was one of her own children. "Leo doesn't like me on a regular day, so I'm sure that interrupting him isn't going to change his opinion much." She paused. "Adam is doing better though, thanks for asking. He could use all of his friends' help to heal. Be sure to keep an eye on him for me, okay?"

Jasper nodded.

"Of course. He and Theo are always nice to me."

Edana murmured something impolite about the demon who had hurt her son, but Jasper didn't seem to catch it. Good. The last thing she needed was for Ewan to scream at her about respecting all of the apprentices of the coven, even the one who nearly killed her son. She'd promised the coven that she would treat Theo like any other student when he returned, but they all knew the truth. She wouldn't likely be asked to step in to teach a class any time soon, but that was fine with her. She knew that Ewan was giving her busy work to keep her away from their son, but Edana didn't fight it. She still needed to investigate the danger her brother had warned her of, and Adam had been rather withdrawn since his injury. His father was the calm, compassionate parent; she had always been the protective, furious parent who usually only made things worse.

She could accept that. Adam knew that he always have her love, but his father may have a point. She would likely only agitate her son and slow his recovery. Her own fathers had seen it and her old coven leader had seen it. Edana functioned best when there was something physical to fight, otherwise, her emotions usually got the better of her. She couldn't attack Theo or blame her son for this mess, and she'd barely kept a security team away from her at the hospital. Her time was better utilized finding answers about her brother's cryptic warnings.

Leo and his family lived on the third floor of the castle. When they had tried to move out of the cramped castle years ago, the king had simply built more rooms. It always seemed like Josh and Leo wanted to find a place of their own, but Charley refused to let them leave. Edana could sympathize. Charley had made her a room of her own that he insisted on her using at least once a month. The man put family sims to shame.

As Jasper had said, Leo looked deep in meditation. He always seemed to either be meditating or playing with his kids, so when was she supposed to talk to him? This conversation was better without children present, so it had to be now.

"Leo! Er, Your Highness," Edana called out, forcing Leo to begin descending to a normal standing pose. "I was hoping to speak with you briefly. If you have the time, that is."

"I seriously doubt that you'd leave if I said no, so i guess I have some time to talk with you. Just try to make it quick."

Leo folded his arms, looking just as hostile as his voice sounded.

"Look, I know I'm a bit of a bitch," she began. "I bullied your husband for being poor and intellectually challenged-"

"He has a damn learning disorder!" Leo interrupted quickly. "We eloped and were on the run from the Red Queen and I nearly died of heavy metal poisoning that she ordered. We lost our first pregnancy because of her. We were completely fucked, and you and your brother made it worse by bullying Josh as he was trying to learn while working full-time to support us!"

Edana paused, trying to think of something to defend her actions. She came up short.

"Yes, but I didn't know that," she replied. "Charlotte herself rejected him from class until the king made her take him in. She used to know everything, so we never doubted her choices."

"Which is why she and everyone else in your little cult are dead," Leo stated coldly. "It looks like she was wrong about Josh, since he's living his best life and the kid she gave life to only to sacrifice to Death doesn't even remember her. Her legacy has been ruined."

"Which is sort of why I'm here today," Edana said, trying desperately to shift the tone of their conversation. "I went to see my brother's tomb and he appeared as a ghost right in front of me."

"Ghosts are very rare," Leo noted skeptically. "I doubt that Adam had that kind of power. The reapers are very good at containing the spirits."

"I know what i saw," Edana insisted. "Anna Goldman showed up to collect him right in front of me. He escaped the afterlife to warn me of something, but he didn't have time to say what. Something about great danger coming to Strangetown and the Darktide family. Normally, I wouldn't worry because I can take care of myself, but my children are Darktides. I can't risk putting them in danger by doing nothing. Surely you can understand that."

"I can," Leo sighed. "I wouldn't stop until anyone who threatened my kids was obliterated. To come back as a spirit takes incredible effort. Adam must really care about you. You two must have meant a lot to each other."

Edana nodded, unable to put her feelings into words.

"Our fathers both died before we started studying the final courses to complete our apprenticeship. We only had each other to lean on. Over the years, we both had boyfriends and girlfriends, but none of them could ever divide us. That is, until that bitch started filling my brother's head with lies."

"I do know what happened, I was there to see it all crumble," Leo reminded the witch. "Josh almost died fighting off your cult leader. Excuse me if I don't find your sob story convincing. I'm sorry that your brother died, but he sealed his fate himself . The Ocean can only wipe a person so clean if they are unwilling to change."

Edana groaned, unwilling to play along with Leo's weird religion.

"The old ways are what matter here," she replied irritably. "They saved Strangetown in the wake of its near destruction, and you descend from Holy Queen Jasone yourself. There's not a drop of ocean here until you reach the end of our borders. It's blasphemy for a Toyonaga of your blood to turn away from such an inheritance."

"Did you have a point, Edana?" Leo snapped. "Did you come here today to insult both my husband and religion or did you have something else to say?"

"Sorry. Really, I am. I don't like the person I used to be and every time I try to change, people always remind me how little progress I've made. My son almost died, and my ex-husband and half of the hospital all want me to be nowhere near him. I really do try to be the parent my kids deserve, but I know I fail. The Strangetown coven wasn't always corrupt, and it came to be how I defined myself after growing up in it. I understand that you hate me, but I refuse to leave until you tell me how I can keep my children safe from whatever my brother saw."

Leo's face softened at her words and despite his anger, he unfolded his arms and tried to breathe slowly and calmly to collect himself.

"You're married to my brother, Edana," Leo replied, the tone in his voice beginning to thaw slightly. "You make him incredibly happy and he's a pretty good judge of character. You and I will always have our issues, but for Ewan's sake, I'll try to move past them. I'm sorry to hear about Adam's ill health. My brother was devastated to hear the news. He's always been close with Adam."

"He's doing much better from what I hear. I'm going to visit him on Friday when I'm in town. I've been working hard on my...outbursts to people just trying to help."

Leo shot her a look that clearly doubted her words, but he said nothing.

"I suppose a quick conversation couldn't hurt," Leo decided. "We can talk in the king's office. No one can eavesdrop on us there."

"So Adam came to you to warn you?" Leo asked. The king's office was about the most private place in the castle, but it was far from private. With the amount of people Charley crammed into his home and all of their children, the halls were hardly quiet. "Where did you meet him?"

"At the royal cemetery," Edana answered. "The king escorted me that day, and you joined us later. Adam appeared beside his urn, just like the old stories say."

Leo looked uncomfortable at these words, though Edana couldn't imagine why.

"The day Lukas possessed me to go to the cemetery to warn the king about some unknown danger? That same day your brother appeared to do the same thing?"

Edana nodded.

"It seems so. He told me that Strangetown was in danger, that the entire Darktide bloodline could be lost if I wasn't careful. And...and he told me to go find a specific reaper."

Leo leaned back in his chair, processing this information.

"Lukas said something very similar," he stated. "That Strangetown was about to get caught in a storm. Whether that's a metaphor or an actual storm sent by the Ocean, I'm not sure."

"Probably a metaphor," Edana said quickly, dismissing the possibility of Leo's strange deity immediately. "Adam mentioned that this storm was related to the explosion in Twikkii Island a few years back."

"Did he now? Hmm. Well, we don't have a royal boat to blow up, so that's something in our favour. But an event in Twikkii Island that would impact the Darktides here? Don't all your kids attend boarding school at the magic academy in Pleasantview? That's nowhere near Strangetown."

"I know, it doesn't make any sense! Unless it means just me specifically? But even I don't live full time in Strangetown."

"And the name of the reaper you're supposed to find?"

"Atem. Do you know the name? Growing up here, he was something we heard about in stories. He's the grandson of Death, but that's about all I know officially about him. Folktales and rumors won't help us find him."

"The name sounds somewhat familiar," Leo admitted. "I don't have any clue why you would need to see him or how to even summon a reaper that old. So this Atem is the one who is bringing the storm or is he stopping it?"

"I can't say. All I was told was that he would know what was going on." Edana paused for a moment, trying to word her next sentence carefully. "Adam also mentioned you, Leo. He said that I needed to talk to you, that you've seen someone or something that could help."

"That I've seen something that could relate to the death of the Twikkii Island royal family?" Leo repeated incredulously. "I doubt it. If Lukas knew anything about this threat, they would have told me specifics. They are obviously tracking something strong enough to warn Uncle Charley about, but if Lukas had a new lead, they'd probably be here announcing it to anyone who could hear and demanding reinforcement."

"Well, has anything happened within the past decade worth looking into? No threats or protesters or disgruntled guests?"

Leo shook his head, running through a list of dangerous events that had been brought to his attention over the years.

"No, even Josh hasn't encountered anything too dangerous in his work, aside from your future son in law."

Edana glowered at Leo, his jab hitting her right where she was vulnerable.

"Theodosius is no longer my problem. Once Adam recovers, my strongest hope will be for him to see reason."

"I never did and I'm pretty happy with my choice," Leo laughed. "I don't know if Adam can match running away from an arranged royal marriage with the best man, but I hope he does. My dad got over it...sort of. Well, maybe. Maybe someday soon."

"You ran off with Josh, leaving Princess Charlotte at the altar and her extremely volatile mother with the shame and expenses?" Edana asked. "I vaguely remember something about that in the news. That might be relevant. Pissing off the Red Queen was usually a death sentence."

"Charlotte ran with us, but yeah, we paid for it. It turns out that the queen of Pleasantview has access to an official assassin, which makes a lot of sense in retrospect. I came very close to dying, and I lost our baby because of the poison. I didn't walk for months. I still don't regret choosing Josh though. I never will."

"All of this happened and you didn't think it was relevant to this situation? How can it not be? Leo, you saw something or someone who later killed the Twikkii Island royal family! You need to tell me who to look for!"

Leo grew quiet, clearly lost in difficult memories.

"I...I don't remember a lot about those months," he said quietly. "They were the worst of my life. We buried the remains of our child and the rest of the months were a blur afterward. My sister and her husband died in a car accident the next year. I've blocked most of that time from my memory."

"Then unlock it," Edana demanded. "I can do a spell or you could ask your ocean to do something with waves or whatever. This could save my family's life."

"The Ocean doesn't take orders unless he's in a good mood, and even then, he's fickle. I can't just try to remember all of this horrible shit on command, Edana. I'll need to meditate on this."

"I watched my brother's body hit the ground, bleeding out his eyes," Edana snapped. "I had to identify his body at the morgue. I inherited twin children that I didn't know how to care for. My parents are dead. I have no one but my children and Adam's children left of my family. Something wants to take them away from me, but I have a head start because of the brother who was planning on sacrificing his own children. Adam was a terrible person, I know that, but he risked everything to save me and my family. There is no way in hell that I'm leaving this castle this close to answers. You and I are going to make a list of every shady person you have ever seen in your life and then you can go back to hiding away your trauma."

"And if I included your brother on that list?" Leo asked, still staring calmly at Edana while she struggled to control her emotions. "Or Charlotte Maricourt, who spent her long life breaking the natural laws of magic and led your coven to its death? What about Queen Celeste, who kept her zombified mother in a cell unless she was performing menial, degrading tasks for the coven?"

"Living people only," Edana replied, gritting her teeth. "You can hold any grudge you want against the dead, but I only need the names of people still able to access the living world where my children are. Have you seen this assassin? Are they still alive?"

"I never saw the royal assassin myself, no. Charlotte found him mentioned in her mother's papers when she took the throne, but he never appeared to her while she was queen. We figured that he stayed in the shadows when he saw that Charlotte was nothing like her mother. It is a very real position in the Pleasantview monarchy though. It goes back centuries, possibly even longer."

"An assassin could pull off an explosion on the royal yacht," Edana mused. "I'd put money on him still being alive, that or he's found a replacement to fill that vacancy. But why would a Pleasantview assassin want to kill the Twikkii Island royal family?"

"Probably because their queen wanted the family dead. Though it was during Claudia's reign," Leo replied. "Why Queen Claudia would want that is beyond my understanding, but people do unfathomable things all the time. Perhaps the queen is being framed or this former assassin went rogue. If that's even the true culprit at all. Your brother could have just been lying to you to carry out some devious scheme he never got to finish."

Edana carefully mulled this over in her mind for a moment. Adam could be manipulating her, that was quite possible. Still, the urgency written all over his ghostly face had seemed genuine.

"How did the assassin poison you? Did you see him, or did you only find out about it when Charlotte took the throne? If you saw his face, then maybe-"

"The formal markings of the Pleasantview assassin are ghoulish, jagged teeth drawn over their face. We saw the design in the archives from King Mordred's reign. I never saw him, though. We think he had a partner or accomplice should he be caught or was unable to finish the job." Leo paused, struggling to find the words to describe this dark time in his life. "I had really bad morning sickness when I got pregnant. So bad that I was assigned a specialist at the hospital to help me cope. I saw this specialist regularly and took every vitamin and potion he gave me to help control the symptoms. I trusted that he was a legitimate doctor because he worked out of the hospital. As the months went by, I only got worse. He was slowly poisoning me. I lost the pregnancy and nearly died myself. By the time we figured out what he was doing to me, he was long gone and no one has seen him since. Uncle Charley still has a reward for his capture posted, but it's like he never existed."

Edana noted the short, choppy sentences that Leo had adopted and realized that she was nearly out of time to speak to the man. He was starting to close up emotionally. She often did the same thing when she thought about losing everything precious in her life. He didn't want to discuss this topic anymore than she wanted to discuss her brother. Leo was probably only discussing this as a favour to his brother.

"What was his name? What did he look like?"

Leo shook his head.

"I only knew him as Dr. Pinkerton," Leo stated. "That's obviously not his real name, but I remember thinking that it fit him well as he had very light pink skin. Brown hair, I think. That's everything."

"And he hadn't been seen since your first pregnancy? He just vanished?"

Leo nodded.

"Somewhere around sixteen to seventeen years ago? Just before Medora was born. My uncle's security team looked for him, but he must have fled the country. If he's still in Strangetown, then no one has seen him."

"Okay, so Queen Claudia has an assassin she hides, that assassin has an accomplice who tried to kill you and has completely vanished for almost two decades now. We can assume that Claudia had her cousin's family killed, or that her predecessor did shortly before giving up the throne. All of that somehow leads to a threat against Strangetown and my family. Does that sound right?"

Leo shrugged.

"It's a theory. I don't know what Pleasantview had against Twikkii Island's queen though. That part doesn't make much sense to me. Next time I speak with Lukas, I'll present this theory and see what they say. They may have something to add with all the sneaking around and spying they do."

"Thank you for your time and openness," Edana said, rising from her chair. "It's given me a lot to think about. If I make any more progress, I'll be sure to let you know."

"You do that. Say hi to Ewan for me, I think Dad wants us to come for dinner next week. Until then."

Leo stood and began to briskly walk down the hall towards the staircase to his suite. Edana watched him leave, admiring his composure. Though he was obviously upset from remembering a dark period in his life, somehow, he remained calm. He had lost a child and a sibling and nearly his own life, but he didn't let the grief and anger consume him the way it did Edana. His sister had been gone for a year or two less than Adam, and yet Leo was able to talk calmly about it. Maybe it was because he still had his family with him, or maybe because of his frequent talks with Life. Maybe his dumb religion helped grant him a peace that Edana had never known.

Whatever it was, Edana was extremely envious.

appreciation for @devilsrecreation's janja and kiburi swap au (post here) bc i've had SO MUCH BRAINROT over it and i want to share some thoughts :3

for kiburi

first of all and mostly importantly, HE SINGS! LIKE, A LOT! it would be so fun to hear Tonight We Strike, an already A*** song, in his voice. i wonder if the songs would be different because he and his float are crocodiles 👀

more tamka and nduli screen time! :3 they'd be way more fleshed out and we'd get kiburi calling them "fish-for-brains" all the time <3

neema taking the place of nne and tano... kiburi gets so annoyed at tamka and nduli one day that he appoints neema to second-in-command. yeah, it goes downhill 💀

i feel like nduli in this au would enhance my mjuzi au even more if it was put into this! mainly because he'd be the mjuzi to makuu (because he swaps with jasiri)

on that note, makuu taking the place of jasiri is SO FUNNY. he's got practically the exact same personality as when he becomes a respected leader in canon, but he's... cheery? compassionate? helpful? basically enough of a small difference for him to greet kion like jasiri does in canon

makuu singing Siwi Ni Sawa 😭 i want to see that so bad. this is making me wonder if makuu and the other crocodiles would be teens maybe? unless kion just makes friends with a whole ass fully grown crocodile from the outlands who happens to be friendly hgdgf

and on THAT note, makuu and kiburi replace jasiri and janja, so gay croc bfs!!! kiburi's personality is obviously slightly altered to fit janja's role but it's so funny cuz dude just has internal gay panic. him singing A New Way To Go would be fucking amazing

as i'm typing this i realised that makuu x kiburi reminds me of that Go For It, [Insert Character]! meme. kiburi's the one who has to go for it and he's surrounded by images of makuu lmao

makuu and kion having a close friendship would be so fun, it's such a cool twist from canon cuz makuu is just that little bit more compassionate. it also means he becomes leader of the outlands! now THAT would be something to see

i can just imagine the scene of makuu and kiburi reaching the tree of life, it takes all of kiburi's self control not to snap at bunga when he pounces him lmao. also he'd so be scared of lightning but pretend to be chill in front of makuu adsjjdhh. i love janja and azaad's friendly rivalry in canon, would be funny to see that with kiburi because "afraid of water, cheetah?" would make so much sense since he's a croc lol

also i love kiburi and reirei's allyship in canon so it'd be funny to see them bicker, and they'd get a song!!

the weird twist of hodari and kinyonga being the spies for scar's army while the skinks live in the pridelands as good guys. shupavu and njano actually being friends with the lion guard is really weird but also would be fun. njano wanting to be a croc! and SINGING!!! 🥺

in general, it would just be so goddamn funny for the lion guard to deal with kiburi's attitude all the time lmao

for janja

actual asshole janja is not something i thought of before but now i'm rocking with it. he literally just hates jasiri's rule, is like "nah, fuck you, i wanna be leader!" and gets his tail kicked like an idiot /affectionate

jasiri taking makuu's place and maybe being a bad leader at first?? that'd be pretty interesting to see especially with her personality. imagine her not being trusted at the savanna summit!

her being humbled by the pridelanders saving her clan would be awesome to see, i'd really like to see her personality shifted to the point where she's cocky and disrespectful but she betters herself

a hyena mashindano between jasiri and janja 👀 damn that'd be cool

i think i like this au of jasiri a lot bc she is involved in the pridelands, and it reminds me of this post <3 which could be even more fun if inserted into this au, with makuu as leader of the outlands accepted into the summit, cause crocs are a lot more dangerous than hyenas let me tell you that. it also adds depth bc it would be personal healing for kiara, as she was attacked by outlander crocodiles in TLK 2!

i wish i could talk more about janja but kiburi is canon does not have too much depth tbh 😭 but the concept of them swapping is soooo cool. it would be so trippy for them to be swapped when they meet in Let Sleeping Crocs Lie

i'm probably gonna get even more ideas after i post this i guarantee. just a very cool au with a lotta potential!!

Honestly I do like how Warcraft initially had Orcs be generic evil monsters, only to turn around and say they were victims of the literal demons causing these wars just as much if not more so than the humans, Dwarves, and Elves... and then the humans, dwarves, and elves turned around and literally enslaved the orcs long enough for their demonic taint to fully fade, by which point nearly all of the Orcs had lost all sense of cultural identity and no longer had a homeland to return to. So they managed to free themselves and fucked off across the ocean to another continent entirely, settling down in a literal desert and finding out that there were several other races the humans didn’t care for or just didn’t bother helping, the Trolls were considered nothing but monsters and the Tauren were nearly going extinct thanks to Centaur aggression, so the Orcs, still reeling from their loss of identity and all but the oldest among them having been born slaves, chose to help these people. The Darkspear Trolls were welcomed into the Barrens with open arms and the Tauren given military and material aid against the Centaurs- and then a group of undead managed to break free of the Lich King’s clutches and regain their mental freedom and senses of identity, and the Horde welcomed them in too! Maybe not with love, the Forsaken are a pretty gloomy people who use biological warfare with gusto, but still allies.

The Orcs did fight with the Night Elves from time to time, but that’s because the Orcs lived in a freaking desert and a savannah and desperately needed wood to build homes and light fires for cooking and such, and the Night Elves chose to go to war over their forests being cut down instead of, say, help the Orcs learn about druidic magic and teach them how to upgrade their new home’s environment so they don’t have to intrude upon Night Elf territory.

And basically every conflict between the Alliance and Horde since then has been caused by the humans and their allies refusing to let bygones be bygones and accept that the Orcs were betrayed and forcibly turned into monsters but have since healed and only seek stability now.

...and then Blizzard turns Garrosh Hellscream, son of the man who freed the Orcs from their demonic enslavement, into a bloodthirsty villain who waged war for the sake of waging war and who accidentally murdered the leader of the Tauren.

Then they made Vol’jin, the wise and compassionate leader of the Darkspear Trolls and personal friend to Thrall, leader for literally a single expansion before killing him off in an opening cutscene.

And then they turned Sylvanas, a former High Elf turned banshee turned queen of the Forsaken and an extreme pragmatist seeking only to protect her new people from those who see them as nothing but unnatural monsters, into the villain by having her become the new warchief of the Horde, and then blame her for things her new political opponent did with glee but now speaks out against as if it was all her fault, as well as meaningless babble about honor from a man with none. Now she’s fucked off to who knows where, abandoning her post and the people she fought so hard to protect.

I just... the Horde’s story was one of persecuted minorities banding together for mutual protection and support against human aggression, but they’re still treated like the aggressors and the villains in every expansion, and their iconic characters are all killed off with no (good) new ones introduced in turn. Meanwhile the Alliance’s golden boy Anduin Wrynn went from a spoiled brat of a prince to a grown man and genuine leader, the three Dwarven clans have made efforts to reunify under one banner while the former King Bronzebeard has become an avatar of Azeroth itself, the Night Elven leaders are now both present and still alive, and even Gilneas is part of the Alliance despite their centuries-long isolation. And also the gnomes are there, but they never really played a major part in the story to begin with. Meanwhile the Alliance has allied with elves who use void magic (which, in this universe, is as bad as demonic fel magic, just with less of an awful reputation because the Void Lords are more subtle and are playing a longer game than the Burning Legion), abandoned their longstanding allies the High Elves for dipping into Fel magic to stay alive, and the Nightborne (literally a faction of Night Elves who were enslaved to demons for a time) allied with the Horde despite both factions helping them.

I just... at every turn the alliance is praised and upheld as being righteous for waging war with their former slaves, while the Horde is depicted as evil and backstabbing despite having been founded and lead by persecuted peoples seeking community and understanding from one another. But if you actually look at their actions as a faction rather than just their leaders’ personalities, the Alliance is instigating conflicts with races who would mostly be fine with opening negotiations, even if they don’t really trust the Alliance due to a long history of oppression and genocide. And the Horde’s leaders undergo character death or literal death to keep having them be the villains, even when the Horde’s actual populace and military fight those characters too! The Alliance’s new allies are ones of convenience, half of whom would (and in the case of the Dark Iron Dwarves, did) backstab them in any other circumstances, while the Horde take in refugees and victims to help them recover. Blizzard keeps trying to have it be both ways, to have the Alliance be the righteous heroes and the Horde be monstrous villains, while still having the Alliance be racist colonizers and the Horde be victims of the Alliance and the burning legion.

“Here, sweetie,” Curtis’ mom leans over you offering some tea. “Drink it, I promise, it’s good,” groggily you sit up from the couch. Almost forgetting you were here, and one look over at the chair Curtis had been sitting on, you realize now, you’re alone.

“He had some business to attend to,” she answers quickly. Giving you a smile when you stretch out. Sore in ways you never thought you would be. “I heard about your father. Curtis said he was difficult.”

“That’s news. Everyone keeps telling me about what a good man he was.”

“Hmm,” she pushes a tray of waffles, fruit and bacon towards you. “Help yourself.”

You are in fact starving, can’t even remember when you last ate. You load down a plate and settle back on the couch, thanking the woman.

“Curtis tells me he was a fierce leader, but a terrible father.”

“Curtis says a lot.”

“Tara. That’s my name.”

“When is he coming back?” her waffles were amazing, and you can’t help but to stuff another large bite in your mouth.

“Dinner time I suppose. His father is out of town helping my other son move in. Curtis and him don’t get along. You know. You remind me of my daughter,” you swallow a big bite and smile. “She let a toxic love get the best of her. They got in a car wreck, my baby girl…she’s not suffering from him anymore.”

“It’s not toxic.”

“Maybe because you’re the toxic one? I heard enough. Tell me about Ari,” you drink a bit of your tea, shrugging your shoulders. “Do you love him?”

“No. I can’t love. It’s broken,” standing up, she joins you on the couch, making her own plate.

“Losing a daughter doesn’t make that part of you broken. I still love my sons so much. Proud of them in different ways. Hayden is following in his dad’s footsteps. Curtis is carving his own path. But he’s empathetic, compassionate, jovial, even if you don’t see that giggly side of him. When Jessie died, I thought my world had ended. She was this bright sunny thing. Always laughing and smiling. Always getting her brothers into their own round of giggles. She loved them. Little sister to one, big sister to the other. I watched her light fade dimmer everyday she was with that man. The same light Curtis saw in you, but she let hers flicker out. With the right lighter, the flame can burn bright again.”

“I told you, I can’t love.”

“Why does a man have to bring you happiness?” you cut your eyes over at her, your vision going blurry, and you’re unsure what was bringing on these tears. “In order to love someone else, we have to love ourselves. We have to forgive ourselves, because life is about mistakes. You just have to start learning from those mistakes. Have you ever been in love?”

You nod your head at her, meekly saying yeah. “Tell me about him. What was his name?”

“Everyone calls him Bucky. I call him JB.”

“What made you fall in love?”

You stare out into the distance remembering when you saw Bucky for the attractive man he was. “He saw me. He paid attention to me. I’d fall, and he’d run to help me up. I was missing from the club, and he’d go searching for me. Not because someone told him to, but because he missed me. He taught me how to ride a motorcycle, when my dad told me I was too pretty to ride. With JB there was just me.”

“What happened?”

You take another drink of tea when you feel your throat closing in on itself. Your chest heating up and tight. “I asked him to teach me other things.”

“The sexual kind?”

“Yeah. He was my first. He’s my brother’s best friend, so it was forbidden. We built us this shack in the woods. It didn’t have much, just a mattress. But it was our own. He taught me everything. You know, accidents happen. And I ended up pregnant. Long story short…our baby didn’t make it.”

“You wanted the baby?” her hand drifts to your thigh, and shocking yourself, you lean over on her shoulder.

“I always wanted to be a mom. I never really had one. We were gonna have a girl. She was beautiful. Perfect. I just wanted my daughter to have the life I didn’t have. And JB, he was too scared to say anything. Had excuses on when we should tell my family, and then…it didn’t matter. He held me in our shack, and I cried all night. Into the day, and then it hit me, that he never was going to come clean. He didn’t want what I wanted. I got up and left. I couldn’t let him go completely. I’d find a boyfriend that I just used for sex, but I always went back to JB.”

“Why was Ari different?” you shrug on her shoulder. Tara reaches over to the table, and hands you a tissue. “Your dad’s best friend?” with a nod, she pets around your hair, “it’s a bit of a pattern. Your brother’s best friend, then your dad’s. Is the attention you were really seeking from them or your family? You wanted them to make a possible sacrifice and tell their friends? JB didn’t.”

You shake your head no, “He just told Steve. Right before, before Steve left me.”

“Okay, he tells your brother after your dad died, and Ari never got a chance. I don’t think you’re weird. We can’t help who we’re attracted to, but I don’t think Ari was an accident.”

“He’s got a kid. He’s only seven years younger than me. He doesn’t want kids. I don’t need them anyway,” this was always the line you told yourself. It was easier to tell yourself you didn’t need them.

“You don’t need them right now. Right now you need a mix of good love, and tough love. That with Ari, is no good. I saw your bruises.”

“It was impact play,” you go move off of her, and she allows you to. The two of you sit in silence for a moment, and your eyes wander around this room. Pictures of the family of five scattered all around. And you smile at how attentive Curtis seems with his younger siblings.

“Did you enjoy it?” you shrug your shoulders. “Are you afraid to tell Ari?”

“I test him. He doesn’t have a choice.”

“We always have a choice. He doesn’t realize you’re testing him for attention. It’s like a spoiled child. They don’t care if the attention is negative or not,” now why did she call you a spoiled child. You cross your arms over you chest and pout. “I get it. He wasn’t a father to his son, so now he’s making a point to do that with you.”

“I’m not a brat.”

“Then don’t act like one. You grew up without a proper mother, and it shows. Ari is not your daddy. You don’t have to push that need to have his attention on to Ari.”

“Gross. I don’t want to have sex with my dad.”

She giggles, and even gets a chuckle out of you, “That’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying that you have wanted your dad’s attention. You’ve acted out in the club, and Ari is the only one who gave you that attention. You liked it at first. But the worse you feel about yourself, the harder you need something more. Got sloppy with hiding the relationship, hoping your father would catch you. Spoiled children do not care what type of attention they get, they just want it. Willing to endure punishment because it means their parent, in your case, daddy cares. But Ari only fills that void for a moment. You say you don’t love him, and in some way he loves you. You just test your boundaries, and then he hurts you. It’s a cycle, and eventually you’re going to push that man too far. Does he know about Bucky?”

“Yeah. He knows I cheat on him with Bucky, too.”

“Sweetie…”

“I wasn’t with anyone. I can fuck whoever I want.”

“Does Ari think you’re with him though?”

“He calls me his old lady. I’m twenty-two years younger than him. I’m not old. I’m not a lady. And I don’t like his rules and his lies! I didn’t know he had a kid. Didn’t know he couldn’t have anymore.”

“Sweetie, do you want to be with Ari?” you shake your head no.

“But I don’t want to be alone.”

“You’re not,” you lift your head up, looking at her. Her eyes bright and kind like Curtis’. “You’ve got people who care about you. Curtis wants nothing from you. He cares about you. Got you here and away from the storm that’s brewing in that club. Some of it is your fault, and you’re going to have to take responsibility for that. But we all do stupid things when we’re not of sound mind. Do you love Bucky?”

“I do. I just don’t know if I could be with him.”

“All you gotta do is tell us, and we’ll get you out of the situation you’re in. I’m here to help, and if you need me to act as your surrogate mother, so you realize you’re not alone, I will. I can’t see another girl be destroyed by a man.”

Curtis’ hand beats on the door, and when Steve opens it, he tries to close it immediately. Curtis pushes past the door, and pushes Steve back into the apartment. “You want to ignore me? Fine. Now you can’t. What the fuck man?”

“What?”

“Wow. You know I thought you were just going through your own shit, but now, I think you just really don’t care. Do you even know half the shit your sister has gone through? She’s lost Steve.”

“She’s got Ari,” Curtis’ hands connect to Steve’s shoulders, and he pushes him hard onto the couch behind him. “She’s grown!”

“Barely. She’s twenty-three years old, and lost. She has basically begged for yours and your dad’s attention. And he’s dead, and you ran away,” he holds his phone out to Steve, letting him watch what he saw first hand. You screaming and kicking trying to go after him, but Ari drags your body back into the rooms. “You need each other. You’re all you have left. You don’t even see her. You don’t see what she’s been through.”

“What about me?”

“My god, y’all are both lost puppies. You got your dad’s attention. Doll got the old ladies, and every time she wanted to show your dad something, it was always, okay show Angel or Florence or Rose, daddy has to work. Meanwhile he’s searching for his next meaningless pussy. That was you, until you found someone worth being faithful to. He never gave her the attention she wanted. She wanted to do ballet, but she couldn’t because he had to buy you a bike, and you weren’t even licensed. She wanted to go to college, but she couldn’t because she had to work at the bar, and help with the family business. And you wonder why she fell in bed with bikers. Doll was meant for more than the club. Just,” his finger presses hard on Steve’s chest, “Like you. The difference is you got a way out, and took it. Leaving her with no fucking safe guard. Ari doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing. Waiting on her to cheat on him I guess. Trying to be the father figure she wants, when he just wants a nice girl to come home too. Bucky is just as lost, man. He is so in love with your sister, but she needs out of that fucking club. She needs to heal if she even wants to think about entertaining a life with Bucky.”

“He’s my best friend.”

“And she’s your sister. If you paid any attention to her, you would have seen their romance happening. He couldn’t quit looking at her, and she couldn’t quit smiling. You’re so self absorbed Steve. But that’s what you were taught to be. The big man. Gets to go on runs with a bunch of sweet butts, knowing that his old lady would be waiting to take his cock when he got home. You want that for her? Ari has never done the faithful thing. Bucky either. Until her. She’s out currently. I got her someplace safe. But she’ll need somewhere with family.”

“It’s that bad?” Steve asks, finally looking up at Curtis. His eyes glassy, and he bites at his lip.

“Yeah. You two are too much like your mothers. You weren’t meant to have this as your life. Doll wants a white picket fence. She wants to go after her dreams, and Ari is going to keep her working in a fucking bar and taking him when he gets home. He’s a lifer. Just like Bucky.”

“I’m a mess, too.”

“You can be a mess together. She’s broken right now, Steve. My dad is a therapist. Mom’s been around it her whole life, and pretty much is a therapist, too. She’s talking to her. She’s being the mother that Venus never got to be. But Doll wants you. You’re her big brother,” Steve nods his head, his gaze looking back at the floor.

“Okay. Okay. I’m not what she needs either.”

“Good boy, you’ll figure it out,” Curtis winks. “Now, I’m gonna spend time with my little brother. While my dad is shopping for the right towels. Hayden is useless in that department.”

Curtis walks into his childhood home, watching his mother fold clothes, and he gives her an odd look. With a flick of her head into the living room, he walks quietly in there, and stops seeing you mix up a pink batter, “Tara, oh,” you say when you realize it’s Curtis in the doorway, “I thought you were Tara.”

“No, it’s just me. What cha need?”

“Well, this is just strawberry cake mix, but I thought it would be nice to add in some fresh strawberries. You know make it a bit more unique,” before you fully finish your thought he’s already walking to the fridge, grabbing out the strawberries, “So you think it’s a good idea?”

“Yeah, I think it’s a great idea,” he gives you a kind smile handing over the strawberries, “Still don’t wanna fuck you.”

“Wasn’t offering,” you smart back going to cut up the berries. “I like your mom.”

“I like her, too. She’s a good one. You are, too.”

“Does…does anyone know where I am?” worried that it wouldn’t be long until Ari came looking for you. And right now, you just need space.

“Just Steve,” shocked, you turn to look at Curtis. Tears immediately fall past your lash line, and Curtis envelops you in a tight embrace. “He wants you to move in the city with him. Get away from the club. No one knows where he is either.”

“Curtis…I…it’s just…it’s soon. And I need to do something first.”

“We’ll go do it.”

“This still isn’t an invitation for you to fuck me.”

“Good, I don’t want to, Doll.”

“You sure about this?” Curtis dips his head in through the door looking around the small space. He turns, staring at you, while you’re blankly look at that mattress. You shake your head no in answer. Because you’re not really sure, but still there’s a calmness that surrounds your decision.

Shining a light around the shack, he points it at your chest, “You don’t have to do this. Who told you that you did?”

“No one. I wanted to do it after we lost Luna,” you hold out your hand, and he places his lighter in it.

“This is where you lost your virginity? There’s cobwebs.”

“They weren’t always there,” you laugh, flicking on the lighter, you go over to light the mattress on fire, and step back to hug Curtis. Watching as the flames take everything, but the memories. “It’s done.”

“What about Bucky?”

“This is best for the both of us,” you push Curtis off of you, and walk over to his bike. “I can’t love him, if I don’t work on myself. And I can’t love him with the love shack hanging over our heads. This is the past. I don’t know if I can ever love him again. I know that I need to love myself, and then maybe I’ll get there.”

“Mom’s pretty awesome, huh? Where we headed to, Doll?”

You take a deep breath as the fire spreads out. “The fire department will be here soon. Where we going?” you follow him as he heads for his bike, jumping on, before he lets you get on the back.

“Can we go back to your parents? Just for a bit longer,” he starts the bike, and heads in the direction of his parents’ house. Sirens wail in the distance, but you have never felt freer. Throwing your hands out wide, you let the wind wash off the rest, ready to take this journey away from everything you knew. It was best to not see Ari and Bucky at the moment.

There was a familial comfort at Curtis’ parents, mostly his mom. You didn’t realize how much you desired a motherly figure. “I’m stealing your mom,” you giggle when he pulls up to the house. “It’s just cozy here.”

“I’ll give her out on loan. You’re not keeping her. Come on, let’s get some of that strawberry cake. And it’s not an invitation into my bed.”

“Wait,” he stops to turn around and glare at you, feeling that you were going to go too far again. “Not sex.”

“You quit calling it fucking? That’s a start.”

“Can you just stay with me until I fall asleep? She’s letting me stay in Hayden’s old room. I’ll sleep on top of the covers. I promise. No sex. No shoving your hands on me. Just,” biting your lip, you look down at the ground, hands crossed over you chest, “Never mind.”

“No, use your words, and tell me what you’re feeling. Then allow me to respond and give you my boundaries.”

“I don’t want to be alone. This is hard for me. I’ve always bounced around to someone else’s bed. And sex was the only way I knew that would let them let me stay. Don’t make me guilt trip you, and say that I burned down mine and JB’s love shack.”

“That was your idea,” he laughs, bringing you close to him. “I’ll sleep on top of the covers. And I swear to you, if you try to shove my hands on you, we’re gonna have a problem.”

“I won’t. Not on purpose,” you squeal running up the front porch stairs.

“Doll Rogers! You get back out here!” playfully screaming at you while he runs in after you. His mom laughing at the two of you being goofy and carefree. She missed this side of her son, and you were becoming a different girl than the one Curtis first dropped off, it was like her second coming of Jessie, and she would protect you fiercely, in a way she couldn’t Jessie.

the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them: I feel like a solid percentage of my fandom experience is pretty much me picking a if not unpopular then probably controversial character and then proceeding to talk loudly and ad nauseam about why I think people should like them.

but if I gotta pick just one, and thinking about characters who I feel like are actively unpopular (as opposed to controversial, which is a different category; like, I'd put Xue Yang in the latter but not really the former, since he's got a middling strength group of core fans)...

since I mentioned Black Jewels Trilogy I'll throw one out for Jaenelle Angelline who I recall people really not liking back in the day, at least (I'm not actively in the fandom now so maybe this isn't the case anymore), or at least didn't find interesting as a character. and I get that because on the one hand sure, she's a classic "all the good guys love her, all the bad guys hate her, all-powerful chosen figure" character, but I've always been deeply fond of her because like. she's weird. she starts out weird and continues to be weird, she's really fucked up psychologically actually, she's kind of socially awkward and this combination of shy and insecure and exuberant confidence. she's sweet and compassionate and also vindictive and capable of horrific cruelty.

I think I have kind of a thing for characters who are extremely fucking powerful and also a complete mess as human beings and that's how I always felt about Jaenelle? yeah, she can decimate a planet and makes friends with unicorns but also doesn't really know how to be a normal human person. I don't know. I don't actually expect other people to be with me on this but I am.

but also, a while back I went looking for Wang Lingjiao fic because I was like "there's interesting material there about this woman from a nobody family who ends up in a relationship with the son of a major sect leader, and, like, what was she thinking? did she try to catch Wen Chao or did he notice her and she either (a) made the best of a bad situation by turning it to her advantage or (b) actively decided that she was going to improve her own life via this guy? like, yeah, she's petty and mean and vindictive and I want to know what's going on in her head. in a story that has a lot of people who come from low station and suffer for it, and sometimes even more for trying to get out of it, I'm prodding at her version of that and going "there's something here, give it to me."

sometimes think about that half idea I had where Wang Lingjiao notices Wen Chao coming onto her, doesn't like the idea, and basically tries to escape by glomming onto Wen Qing instead. Wen Qing/Wang Lingjiao rights, is what I'm saying.

worst blorboficiation: my first reaction to this was "oh no, are we going to make "blorbofication" the new "woobification", I was glad when we left that word behind and I don't want to see it replaced, I really don't."

but also. in my heart I immediately knew my answer and it's perfect good boy Wei Wuxian. singlehandedly turned me around on my feelings for a character and I don't really know how to get the good ones back at this point and I would really like the good ones back. I got into this fucking fandom because of him as basically an antagonist-as-protagonist model (i.e. a character who could be an antagonist in most stories but narrative positioning complicates things) - in CQL, even, so this isn't just adaptation decay or whatever - and now...augh.

idk man it makes me sad to think about too much. going back to thinking about Wen Qing/Wang Lingjiao rights instead.

you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc): so many and I feel like a lot of them have come up in answers to other questions...going to throw this one out though to the people who insist that Xue Yang never had any squishy feelings for Xiao Xingchen and all his motives were bad and evil forever, not just because hey that's my baby but also because it is, as I've said before, both an incredibly shallow read of the story as a whole that strips it of part of what makes it so painful and good and also makes that whole dynamic so much less interesting.

it just makes me feel kind of crazy, also, the way I look at that arc and see the reiteration of themes across MDZS and across MXTX's other works and feel like I'm just going "LOOK AT IT. LOOK AT IT, YOU DON'T HAVE TO LIKE IT BUT AT LEAST SEE WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT" and meanwhile there's another post in the tag throwing "no empathy" around as a shortcut to indicate "bad and evil."

anyway. I'm tired. every month or so I have to block another one.

Okay but to take a brief break from me only talking about Peet in the Wingfeather Saga show, I really love how they’re foreshadowing things about the kids and showing us key aspects of their personalities in little moments scattered throughout the show. (spoilers if you haven’t seen ssn. 1 episode 5)

Tink is smart and brave but impulsive. He thinks he has a better strategy in the zibzy game and while he does score he overlooks details and ends up costing his team the game- and Sara’s ball. He wants to join the Florid Sword and explore Anklejelly because he thinks it will be fun, but when he gets there and finds out it’s creepy and dangerous instead he wants to go home. He runs into Peet’s treehouse and immediately starts going through the man’s personal things which ends up causing Peet to have one of his fits. He bravely rushes into the jail to rescue Nia and Podo, because he’s right, if they wanted to escape they needed to do it now, they couldn’t wait- but he never once thinks it could be a trap and his impulsivity gets he and his siblings captured, though the dagger he stole from Anklejelly helps them escape. He won’t listen to Janner and take his brother’s advice because he thinks he knows better.

Janner has the planning and detail-oriented mind that Tink lacks but he thinks he knows better and doesn’t try to see his brother’s point of view or work with him- he only tries to stop him, even when Tink’s ideas have merit. He resents having to look after Tink and Leeli all the time- he doesn’t want to be “stuck” with them all Dragon Day, he told Nia and Podo that when Tink went into the jail he “had to follow him” with frustration and resentment in his voice. He’s thoughtful and his knowledge of the forest creatures helps protect him and his siblings when they go to Anklejelly (the squeeblin, knowing that fire attracts the hounds, etc). He has good instincts but doesn’t know how to use them yet. He’s angry that his mother and grandfather have kept secrets from him all his life. He’s not usually impulsive but he’s quick-thinking even in a crisis (locking him and his siblings in the weapon chamber to hide from the hounds, killing Gnorm).

Leeli is kind and compassionate. She’s the softer side of the boys, the quiet, gentle one who reaches out. She sees and understands a lot more than adults realize and she’s intuitive (figuring out Podo and Buzzard Willie’s friendship, understanding Peet and that he’s good even though he’s strange). We haven’t gotten quite as much with Leeli yet, but there’s more to her than this, good things and flaws, but what they’re showing us with her is still very important, I think.

Sara is a leader (she easily and confidently takes charge in zibzy, despite never having been a captain before), and she’s also kind and understanding (she chooses Leeli to be on her team even though Leeli isn’t good because Sara knows how to use Leeli’s strengths. She’s endeared by Janner’s attempts at romance). She notices people and she believes in them and tries hard to find light in the world (she saw the flower on the cliff and thought it was beautiful, she wanted to share it with her friend).

So yeah, this is just all stuff that’s going to be really important later and I think it’s really cool how they’re showing it to us. I’m especially noticing a lot of foreshadowing with Tink and Janner, which makes sense because theirs is the key relationship of the books, and it starts coming into play very quickly in book 2. I also loved what they showed us of Sara even though she wasn’t in the story till book 2 originally. Leeli’s character doesn’t get fully fleshed out till book 4 so I’m guessing that’s why there’s less going on with her.

After events she starts taking her training seriously eventually graduating and given her own mask and weapon: pink war fans

07: Officially with Leo, but Raph has a crush on her too, creates a love triangle, doesn't help Zora knows Raph is nightwatcher but didn't tell Leo (tho not out of malice, she genuinely felt the city needed a protector) izza mess. 12: leo because he needs a love interest that isn't his own fuckin sister. She met the turtles a little late and is with them when earth is destroyed, leo helps her with her grief and in turn she resolves to become stronger. Idw comics: i don't even know, toss up between raph and leo

Bayverse: leo AGAIN honestly biased atp, at first she's weirded out but comes to accept the turtles as friends, OOTS she reassures Leo he is more than just a cold unfeeling leader

Rottmnt: leo (ehm) but this time he's the fun one and she's the Only Sane Ninja, she lacks fancy powers but makes up in sheer willpower (and enhanced blow dryer)

Mutant mayhem: RAPH FINALLY break away from norm, Raph's tough guy persona breaks at the sight of a pretty girl, karma for making fun of Leo. Literally first time Zora meets the turtles Raph hides and everyone urges him to stop hiding much to his protests until he jumps out to snap at Donnie. When He sees Zora standing there he stops and blushes and honestly it's so cute.

And every version of her becomes splinter's fave due to her passion to learning the ninjas ways and ability to adapt. And she doesn't argue 5000% of the time lmao

Your top comic book characters?

So, this might be a surprise considering the usual content of my blog but I am an avid comic book fan. I have read a lot of comics (teen titans) and have a lot of opinions (Teen Titans related) and a pretty comprehensive knowledge (about the Teen Titans).

So, list of top five favorite comic book characters (My Favorite Teen Titans).

#5 Dick Grayson / NightWing

Ahem. I hate the bat family. Anyway *Takes a picture with me and the Bestie Dick Grayson*. One popular misconception about comic book characters is that they never change or develop and remain static because of either comic book continuity snarl, or the fact that characters tend to get handed off to multiple auhors. That’s actually false, because a lot of comic book characters, especially the younger ones, are allowed to grow up. Character development, thy name is Dick Grayson.

The reason I joke about hating the bat family is all of Dick’s character development comes from when he steps outside the role of Robin, and struggles to be his own person especially in regards to his solos and the relationships he’s formed with the Teen Titans (you should read Teen Titans it’s a good comic). One thing I think good comic book writing nails is that these characters tend to develop a rich subtext, there is more going on then just the outer shell of the person you see. LIke, they’re comic book heroes, they wear masks, they project heroic outside personas and struggle to be humans underneath it. It’s a definite thing.

Dick Grayson has a tendency to be seen not just by readers but also by the people around him in his life as the prodigy, the success, and this has led to kind of a conflict between his external (what Dick projects) and his internal (who he is inside). Basically, I read Dick as someone who is more comfortable functioning as a hero, then as a human being.

Which results in Dick constantly overworking himself and taking too much on his plate in order to try to live up to the image he creates of himself. Hero. Team leader. Mentor. Supprotive friend. Family member. Boyfriend. THey’re all like roles for Dick, and I think deep down he thinks he has to earn those things rather than them being given to him which is what leads to his habit of both isolating himself and overworking himself in the first place. Dick Grayson is a circus child through and through, he’s a natural performer who wears the tights a little too well. As for adaptations of his character, I prefer the 2003 Teen Titans cartoon take on him to the BTAS because overworking himself and isolating himself from his loved ones is an important phase in his development that I feel like a lot of other adaptations skip over because they want to get to light hearted and jokey night wing.

#4 Koriand’r / Starfire

Part of what I love about female comic book characters is the good ones are never boring, Lois Lane is just as interesting a character as Clark Kent and that’s a statement I’ll die defending. There’s a lot about Kory that is so unique especially in the original comic run that created her, she’s the “heart” of the team, the character that runs on pure emotions, but she’s not soft in any sense of the word, she’s belligerent and warlike. Starfire is one of those few alien characters who genuinely feels alien because the way she processes her emotions are just so different from the humans around her, she feels everything up to eleven, love, anger, hapiness, sorrow.

Starfire is at times, irrational, and hard to reason with, you know just like emotions are. There are a few people who have a problem with her portrayal in the 2003 cartoon, though my personal theory is that she’s not so much out of character is that the adaptation kind of based her on both Donna and Kory to make up for Donna not being on the team. It’s not that starfire isn’t compassionate or a nice girl, she’s just, aggressively so. But Starfire doesn’t fall for the alien from a warlike culture thing where that becomes her entire personality too, because like well written female comic book characters you get a good look inside Starfire’s head and even though she runs on pure emotions, those emotoins are just as complex as any other characters. Starfire is very loving, but she also wants to be loved, beause she is effectively alone on an alien world and a lot of the conflict in her character comes from her internalized fear that the people around her don’t want to make an effort to understand her when she’s making such an effort to blend in.

Conflict is what makes characters, and Starfire can be an all loving heroine, a nurturing type personality, and also be a pretty conflict heavy character, because Starfire throws herself into conflict with people. It’s what makes her play off of Dick Grayson so well, because one of his biggest flaws is his conflict avoidance. Dick throws himself into his work as a way of avoiding people, Starfire is a hero because that’s where her new family is on this strange world and those are the people she needs to protect.

#3 Garfield Logan / Beast Boy

Beast Boy is the perfect name for Gar, because he is the most BOY to ever exist. What’s interesting about Gar is how much he has in common with Dick, he has been a costumed sidekick for about as long as Dick has, he lost his original fmaily in an accident, he was adopted by a rich step family who moonlights as a super hero and is known for being a particularly hardass mentor which gives them a strained relationship even in comparison to other superhero and sidekick mentors. However, while Dick forces himself to grow up early, Beast Boy lingers in childhood as long as possible.

He’s also interesting in comparison to Starfire, because while they are both characters who are “The Heart” of the group, Beast Boy is a lot more vulnerable than Starfire will ever be, which explains a lot of his more selfish personality traits. Beast Boy is the nicest guy you will ever meet, and also just a little bit of a whiny asshole, that’s where the complexity comes from. I think what’s interesting about Gar especially in regards to his relationship with Terra is after the fact he tends to frame her as a tragic lost love, but if you read their interactions in the comics themselves, it’s Garfield being rude and aggressive towards her a lot of the time and coming on way too strong. Terra even nearly blows her cover once because he was flirting way too hard in a training session after he told her to back off. There’s like an element of toxic masculinity to Garfield’s character because he’s a fifteen year old boy who has at that point gone through the loss of two families, trying to desperately protray the way he thinks a grown up man is supposed to act, based mainly off of what he sees in popular culture.

Beast Boy’s a meta-human with green skin and pointed ears who obviously stands out in a crowd as a hero, has no secret identity, has basically been a hero his whole life, but he’s also way more of a person then some of the other heroes in the group and that’s because he’s just full of heart. Beast Boy in spite of his many flaws, is also someone who put all of his effort into throwing a wedding for his best friends, and nearly had a breakdown because of it, because he was like I’m already a terrible hero, and an even worse friend, this is the one thing I can do I gotta do it perfect. Once Beast Boy grows up a little bit, and becomes able to stand on his own two feet, he’s also more of a well-rounded person than a few other heroes I could name because he went through this troubled development and came out on the other side stronger.

#2 Raven

Raven’s cartoon adaptation is probably the most different from her original comic book version, but when I went back and read the originals I loved that version even more. One big thing is just like Starfire, she’s one of the few alien characters (in this case raised in another dimmension) who genuinely feels alien and isolated in the way she processes her emotions and experiences the world is so different from others.

Comic Raven has probably more in common with Jean Gray then she does with her cartoon counterpart, both overly selfless individuals, quiet, unasusming nice girls whose actual superpowers are the complete opposite of their personalities. Raven was raised in almost complete isolation and taught if she doesn’t keep complete control of her emotoins at all times, then she’s giving into her father’s infleunce and she’ll turn out evil just like her father. Which is why I mention the Jean Gray parallels, the massive power they’re born with, and the massive responsibility they threeofre have to control that power and the pressure they deal with eventually causes them to crumble.

Of course I don’t think they’re the same there’s a lot that makes Raven unique, despite the fact that Raven has good intentions, and is almost always breaking herself trying to help others, due to the social isolation she experienced as a kid she’s unable to make her intentions understood and so most of the people in her friend group just leave Raven alone. She is offputting, and weird, and people don’t get her, despite all of the titans agreeing that Raven is nice, and their friend. It’s not just something other people do to her though, Raven also isolates herself, because she is afraid of that loss of perfect control that has been drilled into her since she was a kid.

There’s also a lot of interesting development as Raven grows into more of a person, because she explores new emotions with the joy of a child discovering things for the first time. She makes relationships with people and makes major mistakes, like mistaking friendship with Dick Grayson for love, or getting taken advantage of by what she thinks is her first love. There’s also a lot of interesting contrasts with Raven’s character, like her demonic other persona, vs how innocent she is as a person who grew up in another dimmension experiencing the world for the first time. Also, in spite of the fact that Raven is so selfless she’s practically a pushover, she still experiences just as much as character conflict as all of the others, because of her tendency to withdraw, keep secrets from others, bush off other peopel’s concerns for her well being, and also other peopel’s general mistrust of her due to the nature of her powers. One of the things I like to say is Kory and Raven are almost complete opposites as characters, and yet despite that they’re both equally interesting and well developed because we are in their heads enough to understand their world view and how different it is from our own. They’re both aliens and outsiders trying to find somewhere to fit in and belong and that’s Teen Titans character writing at it’s strongest.

#1 Tara Markov / Terra

You would think my favorite would be Raven, but no, it’s Terra. Terra is also a character in the 2003 adaptation who is a pretty big change, though unlike Raven I believe the stuff they added to her character always existed in the subtext. Terra was always a runaway, she was the half blooded bastard royal child who was epxerimented on and given powers, and ran away from the throne. If you analyze the (GROSS THING THAT I DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT HERE BUT IF YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW) in the original Judas Contract storyline, then a lot of Terra’s more unsavory behaviors make sense. Terra is someone who was always sympathetic, she just never showed those sympathetic qualities, because she was too busy trying to be the BADDEST BITCH EVER.

THat’s what I like about Terra, she is the original OG Bad Victim. Terra has the same kind of sympathetic backstory as Starfire, or Beast Boy, but her trauma doesn’t make her a better person, it makes her a worse and more unstable one. Sometimes victims don’t become heroes, sometimes trauma causes people to act in unsavory ways. The whole point in Terra’s character is that she would never have made it as a hero, and yes while the original Judas Contract does victim blame her a little bit in regards to Slade and paint her as a sociopath rather than a teenager being taken advantage of, the entire arc is also written around the fact that Terra was always going to fail at being a hero. THe Teen Titans did love and accept her, but their attemps to reach her failed. Terra shows a few times she’s actually capable of loving and caring for people in an unselfish way (she cares for Brion, and wishes him to stay far away from the Titans for Danger b/c she thinks he’s too soft), she even shows moments where she sees the things she has in common with Beast Boy and sympathizes with him a little because they are both kids who have been stepped on in life.

Terra is capable of all of these things, and she’s a symptathetic victim, but that doesn’t change the ending, she still fails. Judas Contract is up there with Under the Red Hood in one of the few comic book arcs that’s a near perfect tragedy. I think a lot of Terra’s character gets lost in the discussion on whether she deserved her ending or not, or victim blaming, like the whole point about Terra is she’s a bad victim of trauma, who lashes out in bad ways, so those discussions kind of miss the oint. Romeo and Juliet is always going to end with them killing themselves, Judas Contract always ends with Terra bringing the tower right down on herself. People are like “Why does every Teen Titans adaptation do Judas Contract? Why do I have to watch Judas Contract for the third time?” it’s because it’s good! THe same reason every X-Men adaptation tries to do Dark Phoenix, there’s just something deeply cathartic about the whole arc where a character gives into their worst flaws. Terra is so interesting because she is so heaily flawed, and those flaws are all human flaws, and even flaws the heroes share with her, and rather than overcoming she crumbles.

See, I love Terra, and I do think you could do a version of her where she does live past the Judas Contract, but most of the time when people do that they sand down the edges of her character. The Young Justice version of Terra is just awful, number one she barely talks and Terra is one of the mouthiest most ascerbic characters in comics, and two a little bit of empathy on the part of the heroes is all that it takes her to turn. Brion’s almost the more interesting character in that cartoon adaptation because he actually has flaws and gets worse and fails. The comics even tried to reboot Terra’s character a couple of times, first with the Terra clone, and then passing the mantle of Terra onto someone else and both versions are just boring. Terra is interesting because she has a standard hero tragic backstory TM, but she came out the other side so flawed. THe best versions of her preserve this warts and all. Terra isn’t a perfect innocent angel, but that also doesn’t mean she’s not a victim, or invalidate the genuine trauma she went through. Therein lies the rub, and also the complexity.

Anyway, she’s my favorite comic book sociopath (this is a joke) accept no other substitutes.

1 - Natalie

I've always had a serious soft spot for tragic burnout addicts, and Natalie is no exception to that rule. The way she arrives in the wilderness a bit more fucked-up than everyone else (having witnessed her dad's death,) and with all this baggage surrounding being an impoverished addict at such a young age. You'd expect that she'd unravel first and hardest, but instead, we see Nat take up a role of responsibility in the group. She hunts for food. She comforts Travis when no one else will. She tries not to take her emotions and reactions out on other people.

Even with everything she's been through, how seemingly broken she is in civilization, she ends up being one of the strongest and most capable of the plane crash survivors. And I love that for her.

2 - Misty

I often find myself repeating Adult Natalie's first on-screen words to Adult Misty - "Misty, you crazy fucking bitch." Because she truly is THAT crazy fucking bitch, and I absolutely adore her for it. She does the most insane shit, the most selfish and ruthless things, and yet I love her more and more for it with each increasingly unhinged act. It is so compelling to see someone who is genuinely very caring, considerate, and concerned about others take that to the absolute worst extreme, where compassion becomes control and adoration becomes obsession. She put a spy camera in your motel room because she cares, Natalie!! She can't leave you alone or stop being in love with you because knows you need help, Ben!! She just wanted everyone to have a fun Doomcoming, group-of-people-who-just-unknowingly-did-shrooms!!

I've rarely seen a character be so lovable and also so utterly awful at the same time. I was sure I'd hate her after her first scene as an adult (denying that old woman her pain meds) so I was very surprised that she became one of my favorites. She keeps things interesting, and her motivations are both painfully simple and maniacally complex.

3 - Taissa

Tai's storyline is probably my favorite. I really love the dramatic irony of this straight-laced, logically driven, pragmatic girl losing her mind in the most obvious and dangerous way out of everyone else (so far.) Her backstory reveal - the Man with No Eyes, her grandmother's terrified final words - does so much work in explaining why Taissa is so stubbornly refusing to accept help, to accept an explanation, or to seek answers. She just wants to be able to ignore it all until it goes away, which is a very heartbreaking thing for such a seemingly mature character to experience. I think her adult storyline is the closest to true horror that this show has done, and I'm very eager to see where it all continues to go - especially since it finally looks like Tai and Van will reunite as adults next week.

But that contrast between someone who's about to explode while trying to keep the tightest lid on it all - that's compelling. She killed her freaking dog and I still love her. This show has that effect.

4 - Lottie

Seeing more of Lottie in s2 has made me appreciate her character that much more. I'm so glad she's a bitch, lmao. Having her survive the wilderness, I definitely needed her to make it through with as many problems as all the others. And she definitely has them. I'm not sure if she's crazy, or a prophet, or both, or if it even matters. She's such an interesting character to bring into this narrative, and although we've only really just begun with it, I'm excited to see her descent into cult leader madness in its entirety. I do think she's one of the more compassionate and caring girls in the wilderness, and that she truly does want to help them all, and believes she's helping them all.

I think Adult Lottie has herself convinced she's still the same, but it's so easy to see how power-hungry she is, how much she likes being followed and believed, and how good she is at controlling people. I'm very keen on seeing how this all unfolds for her, and how she finds her way back to a leadership role after all the therapy and psych treatment.

5 - Shauna

Shauna is my least favorite of the main cast, but I do still like her. I just found her adultery storyline boring. But if I separate her from the Adam Martin of it all, she's definitely a super fascinating character. Her dynamic with Jackie is obviously the most interesting thing about her, and I think she's the most compelling candidate for the "teenage girls always cannibalize each other" metaphorical argument that so much of this fandom likes to make (which I'm otherwise a bit iffy on.) I'm a big fan of dynamics between teenage girls which explore that tender, tragic line between love and resentment. And Shauna brings a really fucked-up, dark edge to that dynamic. What I'm really liking about Shauna is that, out of all the girls/women, she seems the least bothered by violence, and the most willing to commit it. Killing the rabbit, killing Adam, threatening the car thief - Shauna is willing to take a life if it means she can get her way, and there's a part of herself, however deep down she tries to push it, that really enjoys violence and blood.

And that sets her apart from the others. They're all crazy, but the one who actually gives me the biggest Serial Killer vibes is Shauna, especially as an adult.
