First WNBA player with a shoe! ♥️🤍💙 Sheryl Swoopes The year was 1995. Women’s basketball was building hype by creating a power squad for the Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. Just two years earlier, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders wowed the nation by winning the NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship led by Brownfield, Texas, native Sheryl Swoopes’ 47 points. At the time, Nike was establishing itself as an athletic behemoth. The Beaverton, Ore.,-based company was finding success with Chicago Bulls superstar Michael Jordan’s shoe line, starting with 1985’s Air Jordan I, and for many, Nike was the holy grail of sportswear endorsements. While growing up, Swoopes never imagined that she’d own a pair of Nike basketball shoes. She simply couldn’t afford the elite brand. Little did she know she would make history in 1995 by becoming the first female athlete to have her own Nike signature shoe. Swoopes made sure the colors and design weren’t too girly and could be appreciated by everyone (although the shoes were only sold up to women’s size 12). And, after growing up wearing Pony, Converse and LA Gear, Swoopes got a lightweight Nike shoe she could only dream of. She simply couldn't afford the elite brand. Little did she know she would make history in 1995 by becoming the first female athlete to have her own Nike signature shoe. In October 1995, Sheryl Swoopes became only the second athlete to have a shoe bear her name. Swoopes was in good company; the first was Michael Jordan. Swoopes proudly wore her Air Swoopes, which featured a Velcro support strap across the top of the shoe and a contrast of red and white coloring, in the official team photo for the 1996 Summer Olympics. According to NIKE

When Nike’s Air Swoopes dropped in 1995, Sheryl Swoopes became the first woman to get a signature Nike basketball shoe and the second athlete behind Michael Jordan to have an eponymous model.

The shoe’s beginnings can actually be traced back to the 1970s, when Nike took a serious interest in collegiate women’s basketball programs (the WNBA wouldn’t exist for another 20 years). In 1983, the brand sponsored some 30 collegiate women’s teams.

By the time the WNBA was born in 1996, eight teams played in the league’s inaugural season, and it was clear no player was more deserving of a signature shoe than Sheryl Swoopes. The star forward was the first player signed to the WNBA, and the only one to have a triple-double in a playoff game. She helped lead the Houston Comets, Seattle Storm, Tulsa Shock and three U.S. gold-medal teams (she wore her Nike Air Swoopes II in the 1996 Atlanta games). Between 1993 and 2011, Swoopes received numerous accolades, including the ESPY’s Best Female College Basketball Player, WNBA Defensive Player of the Year and the WNBA’s Top 15 Players of All Time.

In the late ’90s, Swoopes and Nike also lead the charge in women’s sports advocacy. Through TV spots and print ads, Swoopes encouraged young girls to be proud of their strength and athleticism.

The Nike Air Swoopes II releases August 17 in white/black-royal on SNKRS in North America, and in white/black-red releases September 7.
