Notice of blog closure

Many followers will likely have noticed by now that this blog has not been active for the past couple weeks; despite multiple new announcements such as SHODO Megaranger, Nendoroid Shin Kamen Rider and SHF Ultraman Blazar; to say nothing of how inconsistent it’s been for quite a bit now. The reason for this is that after having contemplated it for a few months now, I am deciding to cease posting to this blog.

I started this sideblog a few years ago as a passion project. I had previously been part of a news team on another toy-focused website and missed the experience of delivering that news; I thought that this community lacked an organised method of news for toylines people were interested in; and I personally was genuinely interested in many of the lines I was posting about for all the good they were doing. But now a lot of that interest is gone -- SO-DO has scaled back dramatically from the almost-weekly blog updates on a monthly line to something that we’re lucky to see a non-Premium Bandai release from at all, SO-DO CHRONICLE has scaled back, SHODO-O has been consolidated into SHODO-XX leading to half the output of a previously astonishingly good anthology line, there’s so many suits in Reiwa Kamen Rider to cover that it’s now more of a guessing game of what major forms and characters won’t be covered by SHF, Figure-Rise Standard has almost completed its Heisei 20... it’s all resulted in the hobby becoming far, far less exciting with a heavily scaled back sense of scope, and half the news items I would usually report here are now just so frustrating that I don’t feel like bothering. Basically every recent Premium Bandai SO-DO release I relented to cover, for instance; and even beyond recent trends it feels like more often than not there’s some catch to a new release.

I’m still interested in all of these lines, don’t get me wrong! But the point is a lot has happened lately to ensure that the excitement and passion I had for running this blog simply isn’t there anymore, and I feel that’s about as good a time as any to stop. I’ll leave everything up, but I don’t expect I’ll return to this blog at any point as I never intended to run it forever. Regardless, I have mostly had a good time keeping this up for as long as I did; and I thank my followers for their support, I’m glad I was able to be of help! It’s been good :)

PS: The only thing I agree with the JP reviewers about is the issue regarding the thighs' ball-and-socket joint, whose design prevents the legs from standing straight. Pulling the crotch joint down doesn't help either.

SHODO-XX Shin Kamen Rider sets announced

With the movie Shin Kamen Rider now having hit cinemas in Japan, the official Bandai Candy Toy blog has revealed two new SHODO-XX sets to accompany the movie -- Kamen Rider #1 and Kamen Rider #2 are to be released separately, each coming with their own Cyclone rider machine.

Based on the original colour scheme from the 1971 TV Show, Kamen Rider #1 features highly detailed molding to bring out his new slightly more mechanical appearance. Two different scarves are included - one neutral, one flowing in the wind - alongside a selection of hands for action scenes and signature poses.

The most notable feature however is that through swapping out the arms, the longcoat from the movie has been included as an optional piece; recreated through soft parts and made in such a way that it does not impede articulation -- so signature poses and the like are still easily possible.

The included Cyclone features a similarly high level of detail, with metallic paint applied where necessary and the ability to be ridden by its Rider fully integrated.

The Kamen Rider #2 set is much the same as #1, with the same coat, mufflers and bike included. The bike's pipes at the back are gunmetal instead of blue like in the movie, and #2's hands include his own signature pose hands. Aside from colours, #2 features on more main difference -- he is slightly taller than #1, accurate to the movie.

SHODO-XX Shin Kamen Rider #1 and Shin Kamen Rider #2 release as Premium Bandai exclusives in September 2023 for 5,940 Yen each; with pre-orders open now.

SHODO-XX Kamen Rider 5 announced -- Gaim, Horobi, #2, Necrom, Kazari, Eternal Red Flare

With the latest SHODO-XX wave due to come out by the end of the month, the official Bandai Candy Toy blog has revealed SHODO-XX 5; the next wave after it. However, with it comes the news that the SHODO-O line of villains and rivals is to be cancelled; with its usual lineup rolled into the one SHODO-XX line. It remains to be seen whether or not more SHODO-XX waves will release per year to make up the same amount of releases.

With this, XX 5 has shaped up to be a very diverse anthology with each figure representing a different show. Starting things off is Kamen Rider Gaim in his base Orange Arms form. Marking both the first Gaim figure in SHODO and the advent of all main riders before Zi-O having been made in the line, Gaim features metallic orange paint and especially high painted detail on the head. He comes with a Musuo Saber, but the accessory box also outfits him with his signature Daidaimaru sword; which can be combined with the Musuo Saber into its Naginata mode.

Next up, Zero-One's representation in the line continues with Kamen Rider Horobi, the leader of the Metsuboujinrai riders. An entirely new mold, Horobi comes with hands to wield his signature Attache Arrow bow -- this weapon is included in the box in its normal and suitcase forms; as is the Attache Calibur for the few times he used it.

Kamen Rider #2 is to join Kamen Rider #1 from the previous wave in his bright 'new' colouration that debuted late into the original show, with red gloves and boots alongside a green head. The accessory box outfits #2 with an alternate windswept muffler for action poses.

Kamen Rider Necrom is the next figure included in the wave, rounding out all three of Ghost's in-series Riders. With a sharp black and white design with green paint picking out details on the helmet and coat, Necrom is provided by the accessory box with both forms of the Gan Gun Catcher weapon he received late in the series.

Kamen Rider Eternal Red Flare marks the fifth and final Kamen Rider in the wave. A very briefly-seen variant of Eternal with red flames rather than blue and no cape used by a Foundation X member in his movie, this at last completes all movie-exclusive Kamen Riders from W.

For the truly last figure in the wave, Kamen Rider OOO's coverage continues with Kazari as the next Greeed. While only alternate hands are included as accessories, this is an extremely highly-detailed figure owing to the suit design featuring many greebles.

SHODO-XX Kamen Rider 5 releases at general retail in October 2023 for 720 Yen per box.

SHODO-XX4 Kamen Rider revealed -- Ichigo, Vulcan, Skull, Joker, Kuuga & OOO forms

Following the release of SHODO-XX3 Kamen Rider - the candy toy wave introducing OOO, Kiva and Ghost into the toyline - the official Bandai Candy Toy blog have unveiled the next retail wave to hit stores this year. While most SHODO waves in the past have followed a pattern of only including series not yet covered by the line (with Zero-Two and RX's forms recently proving an exception), XX4 has shook up the status quo for the line by being made up almost entirely of figures from series introduced in the last three waves.

Starting things off however is the one new series to SHODO-XX, a renewal of a figure that has been seen in previous SHODO lines: Kamen Rider #1. Featuring the 'New' colour scheme introduced from Episode 52, the very first Kamen Rider featured a vastly improved sculpt over the previous SHODO figures released of him; and naturally includes SHODO-XX's articulation improvements such as a toe bend and waist articulation that more easily allows him to hit signature poses.

Next up, the first Heisei Rider is also to receive a couple of new figures; as Kamen Rider Kuuga follows up the pattern of XX1's Mighty and Rising Mighty forms by including both Dragon and Rising Dragon forms in this wave. The blue auxiliary forms that allow Kuuga to jump greater distances, these forms are augmented by the accessory box including all three versions of the Dragon Rod.

Continuing Kamen Rider W's heavy presence in SHODO-XX, XX4 is to receive the last two Riders from the show and movies not yet recorded in the line: Joker and Skull. Mostly retools of the standard W mold in matte black, Skull also receives from the accessory box his Skull Magnum, an alternate hat and an alternate 'Skull Crystal' head to replicate his scenes from Movie War Core.

Kamen Rider OOO also makes an appearance in the wave, sporting his third combo - Ratoratah - in what seems like an effort to incorporate every combo from the show into the line. The land animal-based form naturally features the ability to mix and match its head, arm and leg sections with the previously-released Tatoba and Gatakiriba figures, and features flip-forward claws. The accessory box includes a Medajalibur.

Finally, Kamen Rider Zero-One is to see another new Rider in the line: its secondary rider, Kamen Rider Vulcan in his standard Shooting Wolf form. This figure can have his Shotriser transformation device either holstered on the belt or of course held in his hand as a gun, with the accessory box also providing his Attache Shotgun weapon.

SHODO-XX4 Kamen Rider releases at general retail in June 2023, with pre-orders available now.

SHODO-O Shin Kamen Rider set announced

As a companion piece to the previously-announced SHODO-XX Shin Kamen Rider #1 and #2 sets, the official Bandai Candy Toy blog has tonight announced a SHODO-O set containing some rivals for the rebooted Double Riders to fight.

However, be aware that the contents of the following set contains major spoilers for the movie; and that if you have not seen the most recent trailers you may not want to read further.

The SHODO-O Shin Kamen Rider set is made up of the Double Riders' lookalike nemeses from the movie; Kamen Rider #0 and the mass-produced Batta Augments. While only one of the latter is included, extensive paint details are used to recreate the intricate butterfly patterns of #0 and the militaristic stylings of Batta Augment.

Both figures have the same array of hands -- a pair of fists, a pair of knife-strike hands (especially useful for #0's signature poses) and two different pairs of open hands. #0's molding is similar to #1 and #2 but features higher heels on the boots, while the mass-produced Batta Augment has ripples throughout the figure to replicate the effect of real clothing.

The SHODO-O Shin Kamen Rider set releases as a Premium Bandai exclusive in November 2023 for 5,400 Yen; with pre-orders to begin today.

SHODO-XX BLACK SUN sets revealed -- Black Sun & Battle Hopper; Shadowmoon & Mantis Kaijin

With the new reboot of Kamen Rider BLACK having been released on web services for a couple days now, the official Bandai Candy Toy blog have tonight revealed that SHODO-XX is to commercialise Kamen Rider BLACK SUN's principal characters as Premium Bandai sets, complete with screen-accurate accessories and premium paint applications.

Split into two sets, these contain MAJOR ENDGAME SPOILERS for BLACK SUN which has only been out for two days; and as such details will be under a spoiler cut.

Both sets release as Premium Bandai exclusives for 5400 Yen in April 2023, with pre-orders having already begun.

Based loosely upon the main character of the original 1987 series and his manga counterpart, Kamen Rider Black Sun and his bike Battle Hopper are the featured components of the first set. Featuring sharp paint applications that capture Black Sun's small power lines on his head and luxurious silver paint for Battle Hopper's machinery, this set naturally follows SHODO-XX specifications; meaning that Black Sun has all its articulation improvements such as toe bends and poses such as kneeling. The inclusion of Battle Hopper means this is also the first SHODO-XX figure featuring a bike.

True to the events of the net series, this set also features alternate parts for Black Sun: both the grasshopper legs on his chest can be removed, with a grasshopper leg sword accessory also included. An alternate chestplate with his signature white symbol is featured as well, and finally an alternate head with glowing red eyes is included to represent the transformation scene.

The Kamen Rider Shadowmoon and Mantis Kaijin set has many of the same features -- Shadowmoon himself is painted extensively in silver, with green lines a highlight throughout his body. Like Black Sun, both legs are removable; and an alternate green-eyed head and grasshopper leg sword are included. The Mantis Kaijin does not appear to feature any particular accessories, but is based on the design's appearance in the final episode; complete with its unique Driver.
