Here's a breakdown of how I made my Archaic sandals for Link! I don't have many progress photos because of course I was crunching these for no good reason so be prepared for a long description below the post break. I was following the step-by-step process laid out in the book The Sandal Making Guide. If you're looking for a detailed introduction to sandal making, get this book! It tells you all the tools and materials you need and the photos and explanations are super concise and clear.
I started with a plastic wrap and masking tape copy of my leg and foot that I drew the placement and size of the straps on and then transferred it to a paper pattern.
The straps are made from a lovely grainy textured milled veg-tan leather and the footbed and outsole are regular veg-tan leather that I custom dyed. The main foot straps I wet molded to my feet and then marked the placement for the strap slots onto the soles.
Where the foot straps go behind and under the heel, there's a couple small, hidden pieces of elastic that connect them so they can stretch enough for me to slide the sandals on.
The straps and sole layers are contact cemented together with the ends of the straps shaved down to reduce bulk. I trimmed down the sole edges and evened them out with a surform plane since I don't have a belt sander. The last step was to rough up the bottom of the leather soles and contact cement a very thin rubber shoe soling so the sandals actually have some traction 😂
At this point I've walked several con days and at least over 10 miles in them. Overall, they're really comfortable, durable, and the custom fit is so nice! Only downside of this particular style is there is no arch support, so my muscles do get pretty tired and sore after a full day of walking.
I know this is super wordy with not a lot of WIP photos, feel free to ask any questions you might have!

Shoe cobbling pdfs!
Was doing a little browsing on repairing rubber shoe soles and it led me down this rabbithole. I thought I'd share what I've found to tide everyone over until the next embroidery page update, which may be another few days. Taken from The Shoe Service Institute of America website, a pair of free pdfs!
First is The Shoe Repairer's Manual written and compiled by Robert Sieburth circa 1936. The second is Shoe Repairing by Henry Karg, circa 1965. I'm still flipping through them, but the subject of cobbling and shoe repair is a fascinating one.

assorted photos from the process of making some Bulla Babies inspired chunky heel shoes ✨
also note 2 self: remember you used superglue and then 1mm EVA foam for the toepuffs. If it goes bad when the shoe is finished then meh. But if it goes well then I just hacked capitalism by not needing to buy special materials yayy

I almost forgot, any suggestions for lolita shoemaking?
I've caved and decided if I want cute shoes to fit, I'm just gonna have to (reluctantly) learn how to make shoes. I've got some 3D printable lasts I plan to cast and use, and am excited to get started.
Tl;dr: having huge feet sucks in general but hopefully it gets better if I'm able to make them!

Made some shoes for a cosplay project that’s 2 (almost 3!) months overdue 🥲
These are my first pair of shoes I’ve made by hand since discovering/ picking up the skill way back in May 💜💜💜
They’re pretty comfortable for the most part and mostly came out the way I wanted. The only thing I wish I’d done better were the outsoles, but I sculpted those by hand with EVA foam, a dremel, crafting knife and sandpaper so 🤷🏾‍♀️
[MATERIALS]
Uppers are a Faux Stretch Patent Leather
Lining is a Spandex Jersey
Interfaced with Cotton Canvas on the vamp and a knit interfacing on all the stretch fabrics
Insole is Texon Board wrapped in the jersey with a steel shank and cork sheet to fill the gaps
Outsole is 6mm EVA-70 + 2mm Hard-Lite EVA foam painted with acrylics
Sock liner is 1mm Form-Lite EVA foam + Cork sheeting wrapped in Polyester Satin
Embellishments are 4mm EVA foam wrapped in the jersey and Gold beading glued to 2mm Hard-Lite EVA foam and cut to shape

Still a work in progress.
It's a lasting plier for my shoemaking projects. The overall shape is set , and now the jaws need precision filing and thining. I thought i could make these in one day but i woke up at noon and started working at 14h30 so i guess not^^
The jaws are a softer metal than the rest because it will be easier to file, so it was an opportunity to practice my arc welding as well. (The hammer head is also welded on, it's high carbon steel from an old tool blade)
And yes i could have just bought lasting pliers but i like the idea of making my tools and my lasts like an old time cobbler in order to make shoes. Next I'll make an awl.
