Deborah Kerr (Bonjour Tristesse, An Affair to Remember, The King and I)— For several decades she held the record for most Oscar nominations without a win (6 in total), and she was a prolific leading lady throughout the 40s and 50s. She's best known today for the romance An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant, and as the governess in The King and I. Many people have this erroneous perception of her as extremely prim, proper, and virginal, but this could not be further from the truth. When she first came to Hollywood under MGM she was typecast into boring decorative roles, but broke sexual boundaries for herself and Hollywood generally in From Here to Eternity, when she made out (horizontally!) with Burt Lancaster (on top of him!) in the famous Beach Scene. She went on to play many sexually conflicted women, a character type that would define most of her post- Eternity work. She continued to break Hays Code boundaries with Tea and Sympathy, which addresses homosexuality/homophobia head-on, and even did a topless scene in The Gypsy Moths 1969!! One of the only classic stars to do so. She deserves a more nuanced and frankly a hotter legacy than she currently has!!!
Devika Rani (Achhut Kanya)—She was grandniece of Rabindranath Tagore (laureate). She was sent to boarding school in England at age nine and grew up there. After completing her schooling, she joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and the Royal Academy of Music to study acting and music, at a time when aristocratic women did not enter showbiz. She studied filmmaking in Berlin. It is well known that she underwent training at the UFA Studios in the art and technique of acting under Eric Pommer, and other aspects of film production including costume and set designing and make-up, under eminent directors like GW Pabst, Fritz Lang, Emil Jannings and Josef von Sternberg. She is also reported to have worked with Marlene Dietrich. She had a multi-faceted personality and took on many responsibilities of film production at Bombay Talkies, a studio that she co-founded with Himanshu Rai in Mumbai in 1934. She often took care of hair and make up, supervised set design and editing, scouted for new talent and mentored them. She was the face of Bombay Talkies, and also the reason behind the political and financial backing the studio received, at a time when even women from red light districts refused to work as actresses. She was the first recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, when it was instituted in 1970.
This is round 3 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

Deborah Kerr:
Tumblr media
I think she was one of my first crushes before I realised I was bi in The King and I when I watched it as a kid honestly. The kissing scene in From Here to Eternity is iconic for a reason. Actually tried to learn the accents for the characters she was playing if they weren't English which is more than pretty much anyone else was doing then. Played very restrained characters who frequently seemed to be desperate not to be so restrained. Did horror movies without venturing into hagsploitation tropes. Gave Marni Nixon the credit she deserved for her share of the singing in The King and I.
Anne Larsen is a peak late 1950s bisexual with big MILF energy. Have you seen the behind the scenes pics of her wearing a suit?? Have you????? Vote Deb as Anne Larsen.
Nominated for an Oscar six (6) times and never won, but besides her having actual talent (hot), and besides her looking Like That (very hot, also beautiful), she was always playing women who are, like, crazy repressed. Which makes it fun and easy for me to read these characters as queer. Icon!!!! You know what's hot? Playing ambiguously gay in vintage Hollywood.
Tumblr media
Her face and talent and body, yes, ofc, duh. But also!!! Her HANDS!!!! I may be but a simple lesbian, but she is the best hactor (hand actor) that ever lived and that's HOT! For propriety's sake I feel I must redact a large portion of my commentary on this subject. Anyway. She's hot in her most famous roles (mentioned above), and also some of her sexiest hacting is on display in An Affair to Remember (her hand on the bannister when Cary Grant kisses her off-screen??? HELLO???), Tea and Sympathy (when she's trying to persuade Tom not to go out and she keeps flexing her hands like she wants to reach out to him but can't??? ALLY BEHAVIOR! WE STAN!), and The Innocents (which opens and closes with extended shots of her hands bc director Jack Clayton was also an ally and he did that for ME). Much of her appeal also lies in the fact that she often played deeply repressed characters and you know what's hot? When those uptight characters finally unravel. It's sexy. It's cathartic. It's erotic. Plus, she's beautiful to look at in both black & white and technicolor, and the more of her films you see, the more you can't help but fall in love!
Tumblr media
Literally is in thee most famously sexy scene of all time (or maybe just during the hays code era which is what we're talking about HELLO), which is the beach scene with Burt Lancaster in from here to eternity. To quote a tumblr post of a screen capture of a tweet of a video of joy behar on the view: "y'know, there used to be movies where they were kissing on the beach... From Here to Eternity. They're kissing-- Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr are Kissing on the Beach and then the WAVES crash!! You know exactly what they did!"
Tumblr media
She might have a reputation of being chaste and virginal or whatever, but we all know it's the quiet ones who are certifiable FREAKS
Tumblr media
Devika Rani:
Achhut Kanya (1936) is the only one of hers I've seen but hot DAMN

[name]'s (official)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
NOTES
[Name] - a famous actress signed under narukami entertainment of inazuma. most people are also aware that you have a good singing voice, but actually, you have only sang in public once (the variety show gained tons of viewers after that so the staff and cast of that show treasure our dearest [name] very much). apart from that, the only way the people can hear you sing is when scaramouche sometimes features you in his songs. a fan of miss kamisato ayaka (highkey).
Lumine - our beloved best girl. she is a widely known vlogger and influencer, mostly focusing on travel and lifestyle. she and aether also sometimes does guestings in variety shows (viewers love their banters and chaotic energy very much). miss girl here is [name]'s closest friend and no. 1 accomplice when it comes to making fun of her dearest twin.
Aether - the loverboy. same as Lumine; they are travel twinnies <3. sometimes (a lot of times actually) does challenges for fun. is dubbed as 'mr. worldwide'. may or may not be the secret boyfriend of a famous artist, which is related to why he sometimes asks [name] to do stuff for him. may or may not be the reason why [name] gets linked to the love of their life.
Yae - miss ma'am is a very fun character, a famous variety show host. miss yae loves tea and gossip, some even wonder why did she just not work as a paparazzi instead. people either love or hate her because of her personality. might have actually been cancelled via multiple threads on twitter but our resident fox never gave a single damn. 'i'm too busy enjoying my sake to even bother caring,' she once said.
Ei - everytime [name] looks at her, all they probably see is a walking atm (jk). miss raiden is the richest of the friend group because of their family assets (she manages them all what a girl boss). she is scara's older sister and is the group's sugar mommy. even though ei is not in showbiz, she is still known because of her amazing reputation when it comes to handling business. can't cook for her life.
Scara - a famous artist. he might be emo but that's okay, people love him for it. this jerk will usually disappear after dropping an album and will have the audacity to be present again after months just to release another one without any prior teasers or even official announcements. fans beg him to have mercy because for archon's sake, mister balladeer here never gives them time to save up for his albums. he rarely posts photos of himself on social media but once he does, people (even non-fans) eat it up and become feral.
Childe - most famous ginger in teyvat. is actually not part of the friend group. he is [name]'s childhood friend! is a member of the world-famous band dckz, and his stans' love language is apparently acts of slander. may or may not have mentioned in an interview (aired live on national TV) that he has a tiny admiration for this vlogger named Lumine (dearest Lumi still hasn't forgiven him for the amount of dckz fangirls flooding her dms). no one in the friend group knows that childe and [name] are friends.

Delusional (Son Heung-Min x actress!reader)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: you're an actress in England and one day you get called to work in a commercial with your long time celebrity crush Son Heung-Min. Will you make it through?
Warnings: none
Author's note: well, the inspiration bug bit me again and i had to do this 😅 this cute scenario showed up in my mind and i tried to write it. I hope you like it ❤️ sorry for any mistakes, english is not my first language 🙏🏻
It was early in the morning, you had just had breakfast when your phone chimed with a new text.
"Amanda: morning, sunshine. New job in sight. U in?"
Amanda was your agent, a great friend and one of the most hardworking people you had ever met. She discovered you when you were still beginning your acting career and, in just a couple of years, she made you one of the most promising rising stars of England. Now everyone at the english showbiz had their eyes on you and she always made sure you had the hottest jobs in front of you.
You quickly replied: "sure. Facetime in 5?"
Amanda called you and filled you in with all the details. It was a perfume commercial and you were the main actress.
"It's super fancy, super fresh, so they wanted England's rising star to do it. What do you think?" - Amanda asked.
She was usually super excited when talking to you about new jobs but today she seemed a bit off, like she was hiding something... you just shook that feeling off and replied:
"It's perfect, i'm in!"
"Oh there's a tiny detail" - she said, with a smirk - "you'll be costarring with a male actor."
"Uhh okay, no problem" - you said, a bit suspicious - "Who is it?"
"It's the brand ambassador: football player Son Heung-Min" - well, damn.
It was like the world had stopped for a second. Son. Heung. Min???
No way.
Being an actress meant you had to keep private life as private as possible, but all your close friends (including Amanda) knew how much of a fan you were of the captain of the Korea national team. You didn't miss any Spurs or Korea national team matches, even though it meant watching them on your smartphone between takes. All for your beloved number 7. And now you were going to work with him?? On a commercial??
It made sense though. They wanted a super football celebrity and a rising star together: a recipe for sucess.
That's why Amanda was acting so weird. She knew exactly what she was getting you into.
"Are you freaking serious?!" - you asked, kind of terrified - "Amanda, i can't do it!"
She just laughed and said:
"Of course you can! Think about it: it's the perfect opportunity to book an incredible job AND get to know one of your idols! And if anything happens, just act out and pretend you're not the biggest fangirl I know. Are you my best actress or not?"
You laughed at her point. But it was true, you couldn't let that opportunity pass by.
"Okay, i'll do it. But you have to back me up there!" - you said, laughing.
"Great! I'll send you location and time soon"
She then said goodbye and left you there wondering how were you going to work with your celebrity crush.
**************
The day of the filming had arrived and you were a mix of nervous and excited. Amanda told you to get there soon because you were going to start early and finish everything in one day, so you got there by morning.
"Morning, Amanda!" - you said greeting her.
"Morning, sunshine! Or should i say 'sonshine' hahaha are you excited?" - she asked, with a smirk.
"Oh my gosh, please keep it low" - you said trying to hide your blush with your hands.
"Oh please, stop it, you're gonna kill it. Come on, let's get inside"
You got in and Amanda introduced you to Patricia, the director of the commercial. She was super nice and made sure you were completely comfortable with everything.
"Okay, so let's go meet the crew? Have you met your costar for today?" - she asked and you felt a bit embarassed.
"Oh no, first time meeting a football star" - you replied laughing and she could feel you were a bit nervous.
"Don't worry, i'm sure it's his first time meeting England's favorite rising star too" - she said winking and it made you feel better.
She showed you around and immediatly took you to hair and makeup because "we can't lose more time!".
When you got to the place, he was already there. Him. The man. Spurs player. Korean national team captain. Super celebrity. And most importantly: your long time crush. In all his glory, sitting down and scrolling on his phone. Even that simple sight had your heart beating faster. But you were determined not to let anything slip and just be professional. After all, nothing could happen, right?
Patricia said: "Mr. Son, this is (Y/N) (L/N), your fantastic costar for today. I'll leave you both here for hair and makeup and come back soon to get you, okay?"
He got up and walked towards you to talk to you. The man was so perfect you could swear he was literally glowing.
"Hi, nice to meet you, (Y/N)" - he said with that beautiful smile as he shook your hand - "It's a pleasure, i loved you in 'Sweet Paradise'".
You literally had one of those 'you.exe has stopped working' moments. Had the Son Heung-Min actually watched one of your movies?? Now you really wanted to bury your head in the sand. But you kept it professional, of course.
"Wow what an honor! Thank you so much. It's a pleasure for me too, I'm a huge Spurs fan." - yeah, we know you were totally toning your fangirling down - "Nice to meet you too, mr. Son" - you said smiling back and trying to play it cool.
"No, please, just Heungmin is fine" - he said smiling too.
You were mentally telling yourself not to blush, but it was kinda impossible. Not only he was so much more handsome in person, but he was also even nicer than you imagined?? Oh boy, that was going to be a long day.
You sat down and, while you were doing hair and makeup, you kept talking and getting to know each other (Patricia said it was going to "help the performance in front of the cameras" lol). He was soooo sweet and polite and soon you felt like you were talking to an old friend, sharing stories about your careers and personal lives as well. You loved hearing him talk about his football experiences and his favorite korean foods. He seemed like a really down to earth guy (not that you didn't know that already 😅🤣) and you two got along so well.
"So, what do you expect for today's job?" - he asks, casually.
"Oh, Amanda, my agent, said it's 'super fancy and fresh' so i'm very excited" - you said laughing.
"Well, you do look super fancy, so i think you're really going to nail it" - he said, with an innocent smile.
Oh. my. gosh. Was he flirting with you? No, it couldn't be. Would your long time celebrity crush be really flirting with you on the day he met you? It sounded like a fangirl's dream.
Well, flirting or not, you decided to take the risk and play his game.
"Oh i'm just trying to match my extra fancy costar" - you replied with a smug face.
He threw his head back and laughed. It was such an adorable sight and the cute wrinkles that formed around his eyes gave you butterflies.
Luckily, Patricia showed up there to get you both for filming and brought you back to reality.
"Hi babes, are you both done? Let's go!" - she said and you both followed her to the set.
When you got there, Patricia said:
"First, we need to get some individual shots, then we'll get you both working together. Mr. Son, can we start with you?"
You sat down and watched as Heungmin did his shots and boy, did he kill it. When he filmed, it was like he completely transformed his shy self to this handsome superstar. Is that a model or a football player? You had seen some behind the scenes for photoshoots he did, but seeing it live was something else.
When he finished, Patricia called for your turn. You walked to your position and you could see that Heungmin sat down on the exact spot you were and kept watching you. Saying it didn't make you nervous was a lie, but you always gave your best at any job, and it wasn't that gorgeous man watching you that was going to change it, so you just focused and did as Patricia told you. After you finished your individual shots, she said:
"Okay, now we're gonna film you two together. Mr. Son, could you come over please?"
Yep, that was it. Now you were getting to the good part ajdlajskaj
Luckily, she decided to start filming with some easier shots, like standing next to each other, being back to back and stuff like that. Just 'two powerful people being fierce together, so that everyone wants to buy this perfume and be as fierce as you both' like Patricia said hahaha
Needless to say, everytime time any part of your body touched his was like electricity. But hey you were going to be professional, right?
Well, that's what you told yourself until Patricia told you to get closer and look into each other's eyes for a dramatic shot.
Bro.
At that moment, you mentally thanked the universe for your acting skills, or else you'd be blushing MADLY. His gaze on you was soooo intense and you think his acting skills were just as good, because you really could believe all the feelings he had in that one look.
You were lost in his eyes when (thankfully) Patricia said "wow, that's perfect, you're both doing amazing. Now would you bring the chair, please" - she asked the staff.
A chair? Oh gosh. That doesn't sound good.
They brought the damn chair and Patricia asked Heungmin to sit down.
"Now, ms. (L/N), please hug him from behind" - you obeyed, never leaving the 'fierce' character, but feeling the butterflies in your stomach again - "now lay your chin on his shoulder. Yes, perfect"
Every little move had you going crazier but you couldn't say you weren't enjoying it. Like, perfume or not, that man smelled amazing and getting to be so close to him was like a fairytale.
Patricia was amazed at how good you were: "oh my gosh, this is getting so good, you're the best actors i could ask for!" - you and Heungmin just looked at each other and laughed at what she had said. Her face strangely lit up at that - "yes, perfect! You just gave me the best idea. Now just goof around, let's get some shots of you laughing"
The staff took the chair away and you and Heungmin didn't really know what to do, so you just bumped him with your hip, which surprised him and caused him to laugh.
He then walked over and tried to hide you in a hug. You both laughed again. Being there in his arms, just laughing and seeming to have a good time together, you really thought "is this what heaven feels like" AJSKAJSKAJ
So you both just spent the next minutes being silly and laughing to the camera and Patricia was SO pleased.
"Wow, this commercial is going to turn out amazing. Are you sure you hadn't known each other before? You have incredible chemistry"
"Oh it's easy to work with such an incredible artist like (Y/N)" - Heungmin said with that cute smile of his.
"Ah, please, like working with the Son Heung-Min isn't everything an actress could ask for" - you said, in a joking, but gentle tone (but of course meaning every word ajskajskaj).
Did he... did he blush? You could SWEAR you saw his cheeks becoming a little pink. Aw man, that guy was seriously making you go delulu.
Patricia was feeling very satisfied with all the shots so she just went 'that's a wrap' and you all celebrated.
"Congratulations, seems like we did an amazing work!" - he kinda whispered to you as Patricia was saying the last 'thank you's to the crew.
You smiled at his kindness.
"Looks like it" - you replied, laughing. All that working and laughing together made you feel more comfortable being around him - "seems like we make a pretty good team" - you said and went for a fist bump, which he replied and laughed right after.
Everything about that job was amazing and the day really couldn't get more perfect. Well, at least that's what you thought until a bit later.
When you finished everything, you were gathering your stuff and getting ready to go back home, then Heungmin approached you.
"Hey, (Y/N), umm will you be going somewhere tonight?" - he asked, nonchalantly.
"Oh no, i'm just going home" - you said, smiling softly.
"Ah well, i was wondering, maybe we could go have dinner? I mean, to wrap up the good day of work and also I can tell you more, o-or maybe even show, about that korean food we were talking earlier" - he said, with a bit of hope in his tone.
He was so adorable you couldn't hold back a smile.
"Of course, Heungmin, i would love to" - you said smiling as you followed him out of the set.
As you left, you could hear Patricia whispering to Amanda: "see? I told you" as they watched you both with a grin. Did you really already have two shippers?
Yeah, maybe you weren't that delusional...

Showbiz, (ショウビズ) my beloved. With Sprial Static bc it's the Japanese version.
Very interested in the fact that 'Matthew' is transliterated as マシュー (mashuu). Not sure why, I guess I just never really thought about the fact there's no 'th' sound in Japanese bc it's never come up for me.
My Japanese is not good enough to translate everything in here, but I can read the transliterations at least.

Rating Call the Midwife Characters because I have watched nine and a half seasons and I can
Jenny - girl you got us rolling but you were mediocre af 5/10
Trixie - somehow she is the best and worst of femininity at all times and is just like. Amazing and I love her and also god my eyes are broken from rolling them too hard 8/10
Chummy - truly one of the most perfect women of all time but she married a cop (alas) 8/10
Shelagh - do I forgive her for abandoning her vows and running off to be with the man she loves? No. But do I adore her anyways? Yes 7/10
Dr. Turner - here is the thing. I don't forgive him either. But also he's A GOOD MAN and I LIKE HIM A LOT. I feel like people think that the reason he's hot is because of his face but it's actually because in his decade of service he has never once talked down to or ignored the expertise of his midwife colleagues and listens to women so although he's not one of the girlies he can also have 7/10
While we're here, Tim - you were the most interesting when you had polio and aspirations of a mother sorry bud 4/10
Patsy - on the one hand she was a lesbian, which gives her high marks, but I don't remember, like, anything else about her so.... 6/10
Barbara - FUCKING BARBARA GHSKALAALFB I DON'T EVEN KNOW. But like I can't blame her for leaving the show when I love Ghosts even more. 6/10 despite everything.
Phyllis - nurse Crane my beloved. I respect her. She's very organized and practical and I do just feel like organized, practical women are great. Anyways no need to read into that at all 9/10
Valerie - VALERIE. Valerie. She was cool but I feel like she just... never got an arc. she got some trauma and some woes definitely but idk about an arc. 6/10
Lucille - she is SO NICE but she doesn't believe in SINNING which makes me sad but she's a sweetheart and is so kind during the bad times 7/10
Cyril - I have always loved that part where he's a pastor but only on the inside lol 6/10
Fred Buckle - truly a perfect man. No notes 10/10
Violet Buckle - I am so obsessed with Violet. I feel like the only reason she is nice is because she is married to Fred but if she was just introduced to the show, unattached, then she would be what we in showbiz call an Antagonist and yet she still lets it pop up sometimes 5/10
Reggie - I love him 7/10
Mrs. Higgins - desperately want to know what kind of lady this actress is irl because she is either absolutely hilarious or completely unhinged but as a character I don't care for her 3/10
Sister Julienne - um she's my mom and also she's your mom and maybe she's everyone's mom and ever since she went to see The Sound of Music by herself to showcase her crisis of faith I have just completely melted about her 15/10
Sister Evangelina - I JUST WANT TO BE A MEAN NUN WHEN I GROW UP BECAUSE OF HER SHE'S SO GOOD I LOVE HERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR 50/10

One of my favorite things that happens every time a new book about old showbiz jews comes out is a whole new group of people find out that currently beloved mensch Mandy Patinkin was basically universally hated in his youth. Like it's not a secret AT ALL but I have seen multiple headlines since the release of Barbra's book that were like, "the biggest revelation from Barbra's book is what it was like to work with Mandy Patinkin!" Revelation to WHOM? Everyone knows he was a dick! He was a nightmare when they were making Sunday in the Park, Mike Nichols fired him, Patti Lupone (not a jew) found him difficult, everyone did! This is not a secret! People who are good now can be bad in their youth!
Anyway: Mandy Patinkin was a difficult person!
And the biggest takeaway from Barbra's book is that she is addicted to chinese spareribs and coffee ice cream, not that Mandy was a dick.

‘I said, put me in a corset asap’: Zawe Ashton on period dramas, pregnancy and embracing silliness
Tumblr media
After a series of harrowing roles, the former Fresh Meat star is rediscovering her ‘joyful side’, with a Bridgerton-esque romp – and a baby on the way with Tom Hiddleston
by Liv Little
It’s the day after Zawe Ashton’s 38th birthday when we speak. She’s wearing a bright red, Regency-inspired, rose-covered headdress; she’s had it on since her celebrations with friends and family the night before. “I’ve worn this all weekend. And I thought: ‘Shall I act cool and take it off for Liv? Or will she appreciate it on some level?’” she says with a laugh.
Ashton is still buzzing from the birthday love – as well as, perhaps, the early praise for her leading role in the period film drama Mr Malcolm’s List. She insists she avoids looking at reviews or engaging with what the public think, but it’s impossible to remain completely in the dark. “Obviously, you end up hearing things … That’s the thing I’m hypersensitive to, what that means for the film-makers especially,” she says earnestly.
This year marks the start of a new chapter for Ashton, both personally – she’s expecting her first child with her fiance, Tom Hiddleston – and professionally: alongside Mr Malcolm’s List, she has a villainous role in superhero blockbuster The Marvels on the horizon. Both developments will bring a level of attention she’s unused to; despite starting out in showbiz when she was just six years old (she appeared as an extra in the beloved British-Caribbean sitcom Desmond’s), Ashton has managed to avoid the chaotic life of many who find themselves in the spotlight from a young age.
Tumblr media
I ask if she deliberately keeps what is most sacred to her private. “I’m not Gwyneth Paltrow. I don’t know how to do that thing,” she says, by which she means broadcasting the most intimate parts of her life for the world to dissect. Although, let’s be real, that is already happening without Ashton’s permission: ever since she and Hiddleston were first linked in late 2019, after they starred together in the London revival of Harold Pinter’s Betrayal, the internet has been full of feverish speculation about their relationship.
Still, she doesn’t mean to cast shade on Paltrow. “I mean, I love the Goop of it all,” she adds, referring to Paltrow’s Netflix series Sex, Love and Goop, which takes couples on a journey of sexual and spiritual awakening. “I binged it in one night,” she says. It’s an admission you could never imagine being made by the character she’s best known for – the achingly edgy Vod from Fresh Meat, the cult TV comedy set in a Manchester student flatshare. In contrast to Vod’s take-no-prisoners attitude, Ashton is all jokes and smiles, radiating warmth.
Though Ashton closely guards her private life, during the recent press tour for Mr Malcolm’s List she was unable to hide her very visible pregnancy. “That’s the hysterical thing,” she says. “No one wants to go on a press tour at the same time that they want to keep their personal life private, but that’s my ‘contractual professional obligation’,” she says, partly serious, partly making light of the situation.
Ashton landed in New York for the film’s premiere just as news broke that Roe v Wade had been overturned. “I thought: ‘Oh God, there’s nothing more tone deaf I could be doing right now than promoting a lighthearted movie.’ I was also very aware that my presence in that promotion would be as a pregnant person.” She argues that it’s more important than ever that the different journeys of child-bearing people are acknowledged. “We’re having very important conversations about the autonomy we have over our bodies. What better autonomy could I have than just doing it how I wanted to do it?” Ashton is conscious that not everyone has had the same experience. “I have so many friends who have been through real grief, with regards to pregnancy and conception. I hope I can represent anyone on this journey, in whatever way they’re on it. Cos it doesn’t get more ancient than this,” she says jokingly, nodding to the fact that she’s having her first child in her late 30s.
Ashton grew up in east London in a tight family unit with her Ugandan mother and English father, both teachers. She started acting when she was a child and has never been short of work; as well as her breakout role in Fresh Meat, she had parts in films ranging from St Trinian’s 2 to Nocturnal Animals, and more recently appeared in the fourth season of The Handmaid’s Tale. Yet before Mr Malcolm’s List, she had never starred in a period drama.
The film, set in 19th-century Britain, follows the hilarious and often devious character of Julia Thistlewaite (Ashton), who is in her fourth season of seeking a match in high society and at very real risk of being labelled past it. Her character plots revenge against the eligible bachelor Mr Malcolm (Sopé Dìrísù) after he rejects her for failing to meet all the criteria on his list of attributes for a prospective wife. She enlists the help of her cousin Selina (Freida Pinto), with whom she hopes he will fall in love, only for her to break his heart or at least massively embarrass him. It’s a role that makes the most of Ashton’s comic timing, and it’s unsurprising that her performance has been the most talked about of the film.
Tumblr media
It wasn’t until watching Bridgerton that Ashton imagined finding a place for herself within the period genre. After falling in love with a world filled with romance, gossip and high tea, she sent her team an email saying: “‘Put me in a corset asap’ – but I didn’t think of it as on course to happening!” With the serendipity of the best romantic comedy, it wasn’t long before the call for Mr Malcolm’s List came through. The actor who had previously been cast in the lead role had dropped out, and Ashton was given just 24 hours to decide whether she wanted it. Despite being second choice, she accepted enthusiastically. “You mustn’t have any ego about this as an actor,” she says. “Film-making is intricate, it’s difficult, it’s expensive, it’s weird. And wherever you end up is wherever you end up. So I was just stoked to do it, because I had just watched Bridgerton, and I’m not going to lie, I thought: ‘The door is open!’”
That wasn’t always the case.
Ashton tells me that when she was studying acting in Manchester, teachers adopted a white-centric approach to period drama. “There was this terrible time when you had to do period pieces where the reference, or sometimes the explicit message, was that anyone of colour in the cast had to imagine themselves as white,” she recalls with dismay. “That’s actually what a director said to us as a group when we were doing a Restoration comedy. And you can imagine the comedy immediately left the bones of the seven people of colour.” Ashton, of course, is far from the first Black actor to share the traumas of being a minority within a majority-white acting class, which is why she’s now taking the time to deliver talks and connect with other students. “I’ve decided to dedicate myself to that this year,” she says.
As a self-described “creative chameleon”, it didn’t make sense to Ashton that the artistic fantasies of others didn’t stretch to seeing Black people step into worlds or characters unknown. “I couldn’t understand why the imagination I had as a reader of classic pieces was not being interpreted on screen.” She finds it absurd that it has taken almost 32 years of acting for her to be tasked with putting on a bonnet. “Sometimes there’s this undertone, like: ‘Well done for retaining enough energy to wait for this moment to happen.’ And that’s a little bit how it feels to step into period drama.”
Many of the roles Ashton played before Mr Malcolm’s List had been harrowing (with the notable exception of Fresh Meat). Earlier this year she starred as a survivor of sexual assault in Lucy Kirkwood’s urgent 25-minute BBC drama Maryland, a work filled with the collective anger of women fed up with a failing criminal justice system. In Dreams of a Life (released in 2011, the same year Fresh Meat premiered), she played the near-silent role of Joyce Carol Vincent, the north London woman whose dead body lay in front of her television for three years before anyone noticed she was gone.
The intensity of those characters’ worlds sits in stark contrast to the jubilance of Ashton’s latest part. She revelled in the chance to go light. “The process of getting into this character was like allowing myself to feel joyful, silly, tender, clumsy, goofy, soft.” These are, she suggests, states of being that Black women are often assumed not to experience. “I thought: ‘Why would anyone think that my peers and I were incapable of this joyful, tender thing?’ What’s that about?”
You’re allowed to play a fun role, I point out. “I am absolutely allowed!” she says. “I realised that for myself at some point in filming. That was a huge penny that dropped.”
She reflects on a protest she attended in east London recently, in response to the story of Child Q, the 15-year‑old schoolgirl who was strip-searched by police officers in 2020 after school staff falsely accused her of having marijuana in her possession. Child Q was menstruating at the time. Teachers and officers didn’t contact her parents before she was searched, and no other adults were present. As Ashton speaks, it is evident just how much the abuse experienced by Child Q disturbed her. ‘‘I went to the protest with a placard bearing a slogan that the writer Bonnie Greer had given me. She was like: ‘Why are people trying to take tenderness from young Black children?’ And I thought that was such a poetic way of putting it. So instead of something very boldly antagonistic, which is where your mind goes when you write a placard for any type of protest, I wrote: ‘Stop killing young Black children’s dreams’. Then I scrubbed that out, and put: ‘Let Black children dream’.”
Ashton might be starring in period dramas and Marvel movies these days, but not long ago she was on the verge of giving up acting altogether; she was worried about being typecast after five years of starring in Fresh Meat. “There are strange things that happen when you leave episodic television, and I think this applies in the UK and the US. There’s a really weird chunk of time where everyone wants you to do the same thing again.” She points to the example of Friends. “Look at the stalling Joey spin-off. Look at the subsequent difficult realigning of identities that someone like Matthew Perry, who played Chandler, went through.”
She briefly moved to the Kent seaside town of Margate in 2018 to clear her head; it helped her return to the industry refreshed. After years of navigating entertainment, she had been on the verge of burning out. “I think it’s because I started young, before any pendulum swing in the industry. I’ve seen it all at this point. The stories I could tell – I mean, that’s the reason I wrote Character Breakdown,” she says, referring to the book she published in 2019, which explores the horrors of the TV and film industry through a mix of fiction and memoir. It’s both shocking and humorous, and includes imagined scenes that reflect the power plays between film-makers, actors and agents. After her brief hiatus from the industry, the role to reel her back into the world of entertainment was, fittingly, that of a gallerist in 2019’s Velvet Buzzsaw, a horror-thriller situated in the world of fine art that asks the question: who is in control – the artist or the industry?
Reflecting on the Ashton of now versus the Ashton who rose to fame in Fresh Meat (the show turned 10 last year), she is more focused on the parts of herself that stayed the same rather than the elements that have changed. “I’m still someone who wants to create interesting characters,” she says. “I’m also someone who loves being part of a loving ensemble – that’s where I always feel most alive. I still love Manchester. I’m not that person any more, but I don’t really know in which ways I’m not – that’s so weird, isn’t it?”
Tumblr media
It has been intriguing for Ashton to witness the ways people have seen themselves reflected in the character of Vod. “A student said to me: ‘You are the first person of colour I saw representing any sort of flavour of non-binary or punk or queerness on television.’” She recognises the huge responsibility that comes with that status.
Part of the reason Vod has chimed with so many young people who find themselves occupying a space outside the norm is Ashton’s unwavering determination to create complicated characters over likable ones. “The show’s brilliant creators Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong wanted me to play it like Vod’s really cool. I said, early on: ‘I won’t be able to create someone cool for you, but I will be able to create someone who doesn’t give a fuck.’”
There is a widespread sense that, because there has been so little representation of marginalised perspectives within the film and TV industry, each character who does make it on to the screen must represent every minority experience, which, of course, it cannot. It’s something that has long frustrated Ashton. “Reading Toni Morrison taught me from a very early age that the personal is universal. Anyone who tries to tell you it’s not has to think about that. That’s also just the way art works. You know, it doesn’t need to be liked all the time. This is what I can’t bear! I don’t care.”
Someone who instilled this mantra within Ashton is the groundbreaking Black artist Lorraine O’Grady. During a series of documentaries she recorded with the artist ahead of the Tate exhibition Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power in 2017, Ashton learned that O’Grady had been shunned by some of the Black artist networks in New York because her work extended beyond the concerns of Black struggle. Yet, at 87, O’Grady continues to create the art she wants to see. “Is she someone who goes to bed at night feeling a bit sad that she was outcast by certain communities? Yes. Has she let it take her away from her gut and her heart, and her own experience? No, she has not.”
Tumblr media
Having taken inspiration from O’Grady, how have Ashton’s own personal struggles affected her professional life? “They say the same things you struggle with as a person are the same things you struggle with as an actor,” she says. “There was a point when I couldn’t cry on cue. I was like, ‘God I’m just a crap actor, everyone else seems to be able to act loads of stuff, and it’s just me.’ And, actually, it was me. I had a lot of unprocessed sadness and trauma that wasn’t ready to come out in my own life, let alone when someone snapped their fingers and said to cry on behalf of someone else.”
What eventually allowed Ashton to process her own trauma was her writing. In 2019, she wrote a play called For All the Women Who Thought They Were Mad, exploring how workplace dynamics affect Black women. “There is an instant feeling of writing from places that need releasing, writing about something that was traumatising me. So I’m changing the world and changing myself at the same time, and that’s still how I write now.”
And when Ashton isn’t making sense of the world’s traumas, past, present and future, what does she do for fun? She really has to think about this one, not because there isn’t joy in her life – it’s full of it – but because her life’s enjoyments are in many ways tied up in her work. “I feel attacked,” she says through a giggle, as I list some possible activities that she could do for fun outside of the classic film club she joined during lockdown, or the books she reads (she hosted last year’s Women’s prize for fiction podcast).
“I want to get back to the sea,” she says. “It changed my whole headspace. And I should take up gardening.” A day later, she sends me a follow-up email, concerned I might think she’s forgotten how to have fun. “I gave the most post-Covid answer to my free-time question. Forgetting that I love art galleries, live music, yoga and pilates, acupuncture and painting. Sometimes I’m still operating from a place of captivity!”
It’s time for Ashton to go. Hobbies or not, she has plenty on the horizon: she is a woman on the verge of everything from Marvel to motherhood. But, amid the upheaval, she appears to have found a new equilibrium. “I think over the past five years I’ve realised that the only way to do anything in this industry is to be anchored in myself,” she says. “As long as I have that, everything else will fall into place.”
Mr Malcolm’s List is released in the UK on 26 August and is out now in the US.

TAG GAME: EIGHT SHOWS TO GET TO KNOW ME
Tagged by @santabarbara-skies, aaayyyy! I hardly get tagged so yaaaaaay!
Also this is kind of hard, but I’ll try (and like Em, I’m adding explanations, sort-of-kind-of, but not fancy formatting because I’m lazy).
The West Wing. Still my all-time favorite. Is it idealistic? Sure. Is it preachy sometimes? Yeah. But does it make my bleeding liberal heart glow and hopeful? You bet. Do I want to hug a pillow whenever someone says, “A guy falls in a hole...” or “What’s next?” or “Babies come with hats.” or “He loves teams, I love him so much” or almost-anything-CJ-or-Sam-says? Almost always. So, yeah, it’ll always top my list.
Tumblr media
Psych. Burton Guster, my beloved. I started this show for two reasons: Dule Hill was in it and I just finished the West Wing and needed to keep that connection going; and it a Sherlock Holmes adaptation-sort-of, and I am basically on board for almost anything that is loosely modeled on Holmes. But I stayed for, oh, god, all of it. The two idiots at the center of it all, for Shawn and Juliet, for Lassie, for the bond between Lassie and Juliet, for everything. It is just an absolute delight, come on, son, jerk chicken, Pluto, suck it, meeeeeee, incarcerated in a blueberry, TT Showbiz, MC ClapYoHandz, I would rather fill-in-the-blank, pineapples, Banana as in Bananarama, you know that’s right.
Tumblr media
Friends. Another one that’s definitely dated and contains plenty of sexist, fatphobic, homophobic, and other problematic content. But I have a huge soft spot for this show and would still be one of my desert island shows, if not my #1 desert island show, because it makes me laugh every. single. time. It’s not my favorite show, but it’s the one that makes me feel the most, I don’t know...home? Like I’m going back to this place that isn’t perfect, but somewhere I grew up and so it means a lot to me. And a lot of it really is still funny and adorable and heartwarming, you know?
Tumblr media
Ripper Street. Another one that has Sherlock Holmes vibes, but also includes my favorite handsome man, Matthew Macfadyen. Plus, period drama goodness, with an excellent cast overall, great acting, good writing, and a great ending that’s bittersweet but fitting and satisfying. The character arcs are just fabulous. There are lots of hats and vests. And dry dark humor. And moments that will break your heart to pieces. But others that will give you life. Probably one of the most underrated shows on this whole list, if not the most underrated. Plus the fandom is (still) lovely. Seriously one of the nicest, best fandoms I’ve ever been a part of.
Tumblr media
House MD. The one that started it all for me, and by “it all” I mean my leap into internet fandom communities. So it’s quite special to me. I was one of the only House/Stacy fans on the planet, I think, but that’s how it goes. And more importantly: the friends I made because of this show! The fics I wrote! (Eden in particular, still one of my favorites I’ve ever written for any fandom.) The fics I read! Plus the show itself is my cup of tea, being yet another Sherlock Holmes-esque (Holmes--Homes--House) story on this list. Hugh Laurie just kills it every damn time (although, much like Macfadyen, I just...can’t get used to and actually really hate his American voice/accent, just no, please stop, please just speak in your normal voice, please). The only downside is that it doesn’t have a ton of rewatch value for me, but maybe one day I’ll get back to it again.
Tumblr media
Black Sails. Another awesome period drama that was/is criminally underrated and under-watched. This. Show. Y’all. If you haven’t seen it, just see it. It’s got everything. The characters, so deliciously flawed but sympathetic and layered! Jack my favorite sassy ratboi captain. Flint, everyone’s favorite murder husband. Tits! Fruit! Oh, the production value is gorgeous, the ladies are badass, and it’s just a romp. Watch it.
Tumblr media
The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. Heeeey, another period piece, dramedy this time, though. And one of the more female-centric shows on my list. It’s hilarious, plain and simple. Jewish culture is everywhere in it, which I adore and appreciate. Tony Shalhoub as Abe Weissman and Alex Borstein as Susie Myerson are nothing short of brilliant in it. I love Lenny, but only because I love historical shows that weave in real people (I’m not a Lenny/Midge fan, sorry; I was rooting for Benjamin, even though I didn’t think it would pan out). I can’t wait to see how the series ends. I’ve loved every minute of it.
Tumblr media
The Mindy Project. My guilty pleasure show, and I shouldn’t feel that guilty about it. A show about a successful doctor who struggles to find love and herself in the big city? Yes, please. It’s sweet. It’s absolutely hilarious. Mindy Kaling is so relatable sometimes it hurts (in a good way). I wish I had her entire wardrobe, it’s amazing. Even the supporting cast is adorable and endearing and you just want to hug all of them and tell them they’re doing great, sweeties. It’s a super-sweet pick-me-up show, just a joy.
Tumblr media
And I tag...whoever. Here are a couple: @houseocats @olivelune @scienceoftheidiot @deelaundry @hondagirll

RIP Mark Goddard, who played Major Don West on the 1960s “Lost in Space.”
Lovely statement from Goddard’s co-star Bill Mumy, who played Will Robinson. Variety:
R.I.P. to Mark Goddard. A truly beloved friend and brother to me for 59 years. I knew this was coming for the past few months. Shortly after a great phone chat he and I had on his 87th birthday in late July, I became aware that I would most likely never see or speak with him again. The last words we exchanged were “I love you.”
The show was initially more of a straight action-adventure, with Goddard’s Major West as a romantic lead opposite Judy Robinson, played by Marta Kristen. But when “Batman” took off in the ratings, “Lost in Space” went for camp and there wasn’t much for Major West to do other than yell at Doctor Smith.
The New York Times:
In his 2008 memoir, “To Space and Back,” [Goddard] referred to his space uniform, his wardrobe for the show, as “silver lamé pajamas and my pretty silver ski boots.”
Goddard left showbiz, went back to college, and became a teacher of special needs kids.
Goddard lived a life of service, bringing happiness to a lot of people (including me) and then as a teacher. A good life.

Propaganda
Irene Dunne (The Awful Truth, Theodora Goes Wild, My Favorite Wife)— The first time I saw her in Theodora Goes Wild she struck me dumb because who is that BEAUTIFUL woman being so funny and clever??? She was primarily known as a dramatic actress (and believe you me those are muscles she can FLEX, Penny Serenade hurts my feelings) but she’s also one of the funniest screwball leading ladies I’ve ever seen. Her films with Cary Grant are especially charming, but all her characters have this knowing quality in the heart of them that’s so intriguing, and her screwball girlies have this freedom to go after what (or who) they want that is delightfully subversive. I want to be her, I want to fuck her, I want to see every movie she’s ever done, she is a brilliant actress and she is my dream woman.
This is round 2 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Irene Dunne:
Tumblr media
irene excelled in screwball comedies, musicals, melodramas...she could do it all. she often played elegant society ladies and brought sparkling charisma and poise for days to anything she did, and sang like an angel (she pursued opera before going into moves), her rendition of jerome kern's "smoke gets in your eyes" in roberta moves me to tears every time.
youtube
A fantastic star of screwball comedies Irene Dunne is an undersung hot woman in my opinion. She rose to fame in her roles alongside the likes of Cary Grant, and was usually the funniest person in her movies. And the hottest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's snarky, and quick, prone to rolling her eyes, and eager to trip her counterparts up. In short, she was a devilish, charming, problem of a woman in many of her films, the pinnacle of hotness.
Tumblr media
She’s so gorgeous and funny and her way of acting is so fresh and timeless! She’s the complete package of hotness to me with her talents, humor, and, of course, hot looks. I named my left tit after her to hopefully attract even a smidgen of her beauty and charm.
Tumblr media
Devika Rani:
Achhut Kanya (1936) is the only one of hers I've seen but hot DAMN

Where I've Been These Past Few Months
Hello Tumblr. I'm back! You have probably been wondering where I've been these past few months. I mean, no major posts, no re-blogs; I basically went cold turkey. Well, a lot of things happened that kinda drained my energy. I had some hellish friend drama, my family life hasn't been the best, and I just needed to take a posting break from both Tumblr and AO3. I also took a break from the PaTB fandom so I could expand my horizons with other things I'm interested in. But now, for the 30th anniversary of Animaniacs, I'm returning to posting for the fandom until the end of the month. I'm going to be hopefully writing some more PaTB fanfiction (there's an idea in particular that I'm excited about) and my goal is to get ideas that I had planned done (i.e. more essays, ranking lists, other special posts). I also have a few announcements for my followers that are listed below:
After September, this blog will be changed so that all my fandoms can be incorporated. So, this blog will no longer be dedicated to solely Pinky and The Brain. For everyone who came for my essays, I thank you so very much for all your support and appreciation. And I'm hoping you'll stay for all my other hyperfixations. Don't worry! I'm not leaving the Animaniacs community; it's just my blog will include more things I'm interested in. I'm also hoping this will get more people to see my work.
A few ideas I had planned are now cancelled due to lack of interest. Brain Week is the biggest cancellation on my list. I just don't have the time right now and I've lost interest in the idea recently. My fanfiction "When He Loved Me" will also not continue for the time being. I've had so many other ideas for other, much better fanfics, that I haven't have time to work on this one. Some ideas are still ready to go, such as my reviews of the PaTB comics and my ranking of every reboot episode/song. And of course, new essays about certain aspects of PaTB and Animaniacs are in production. Also, I have a new multi-chapter fanfiction currently in planning, so the first chapter will probably be released in the upcoming weeks.
Below are some introductions to a few fandoms I'm planning on exploring (Ps: for some posts I'll make for these fandoms, you don't need to be in the fandom to understand what's going on):
The Owl House is a show that was released in 2020 on Disney Channel. It's famous for it's LGBTQ+ characters and it's insane world building. The magic lore, beautiful animation, and memorable characters have made this show a phenomenon with millions of fans and a dedicated community of people who use this show as a comforting tool. I've been involved with the fandom since 2021, where I fell in love with the show after discovering the LGBTQ+ themes. As someone who recently discovered their sexuality, this show connected with me. I even made some close friends through this show. I'm very excited to start discussing it with all of you, and maybe I can get some people into the show.
The Rock-afire Explosion is an animatronic band dating all the way back to 1980. For people who follow me that are familiar with the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, you may or may not know that these guys are one of the major inspirations behind the video game. The restaurant the band performed at was called Showbiz Pizza Place. The RAE became staples of many people's childhood (including my mom's) and were beloved icons. Though their rival company Chuck E. Cheese would replace the band, their memory lives on through private collections, and even a few public venues. This is actually the oldest fandom I've been involved in aside from My Little Pony. I've loved this band since 2019 and have been wanting to discuss them for a while. I know many people on Tumblr aren't familiar with the band, but that's my goal. To give my followers something they've never seen before, and might become interested in. Seriously, The Rock-afire Explosion have some great music and are so full of character. I might even make a series reviewing their showtapes along with old Chuck E. Cheese tapes. This show is underrated and I believe that giving you guys some exposure to them might give you a new topic of interest or just something new to learn about.
I also might do some reviews for other shows that I want to watch like She-Ra, Dead End: Paranormal Park, Steven Universe, The Looney Tunes Show, Amphibia, The Ghost and Molly McGee, DuckTales 2017, The Dragon Prince, and more. So, basically, this is becoming a generalized animation review blog on occasion, with my fixations being places at the forefront. I'm hoping these expansion plans help to give me motivation for posting more, and will give my followers a wide variety of content to look forward to.
That's about it for updates to the blog. And yes, I changed my username. Once again, I sincerely apologize for my absence in these past few months. This break was what I needed for my mental health and I feel motivated enough to continue posting. Thanks to everyone who's stuck with me, I'm eternally grateful. So, to everyone who views this post, I'm back and more than ready to be active again! I'm excited to engage in fandom things again! See y'all soon! Narf!
