Avatar Rant: Snowy Region Na'vi

Am I the only one who doesn't like the fanon snow navi designs? Specifically this (I used shitty AI images I found off of pinterest to illustrate the point and to avoid using actual artwork from people 🩷):

(Before I continue my God these are creepy 😭 AI genuinely cannot create Na'vi without them looking uncanny, disturbing and far too human)

I can understand why people choose the more predictable design philosophy – blonde hair, blue eyes, pale/white skin, pretty two pieces – because that's relatively how this sort of lifestyle has been portrayed to us in the media. Every movie or show set in a snowy region always features mostly eastern European characters, so naturally people decide that their snow na'vi must resemble eastern European people to a degree, and this bothers me.

Not because they look like white people (though that is like 25% why ngl) but because it just isn't realistic? Na'vi may be inspired by humans but they are still a different species living on a harsh and deadly planet that humans can't survive in, na'vi winter and snow would be excruciatingly difficult for them, and they would need to adapt to it.

I just don't see how they would be so thin and petite and pale, people say to blend in, but why? Only a handful of animals in arctic regions are actually white to blend in (polar bears, arctic foxes etc.) so wouldn't it make more sense to base them off of arctic animals from the ice age? Back then, animals were bigger, bulkier, with thicker skin and hair all over to protect themselves from the crippling cold – with that in mind, wouldn't snow na'vi be bigger than average na'vi, and bulkier too? Unlike regular na'vi, it would make sense that the snow ones actually have body hair all over, maybe even fur if you want to take it that far.

And if you're basing them off of INDIGENOUS people, then appearance, features and fashion wise, wouldn't it make more sense to base them off of the actual Inuit people of the arctic instead of Elsa from frozen 😭

Because realistically why would they wear flowey dresses and two pieces in weather that is probably 80% worse than any winter humanity has ever faced... especially since na'vi are all inspired by different non-white/european indigenous communities, and yes... non-white/European indigenous people do in fact live in cold, snowy, arctic regions...

To add a little bit of pseudo-psychology to it, it may be done in an attempt from white avatar fans for the most part to feel closer to the na'vi by adding a white adjacent sub-species, as the closer to europeans the na'vi look, the more they see themselves within the na'vi. However, that is purely speculation lol.

Also, I do NOT think you are racist or anti-indigenous or anything of the sort if your headcanon for snow na'vi looks anything like the examples! You're allowed to draw and design what you want, and just because tumblr user princess-nobody doesn't like it, doesn't mean it's bad.

TLDR: Fanon snow na'vi don't make sense and confuse me lol. Imo snow na'vi would be big and bulky behemoths that are covered in thick body hair and wear large, figure covering warm clothing, not skinny little russian girls in ballet outfits LMAOOOO.

Za’yukti, my Avatar oc. She’s a part of the Hweth’ik clan. They’re snow mountain climbing/cave Na’vi lol. 

Here’s some info about the snow mountain Na’vi of Za’yukti’s story:

-  Snow mountain Na’vi have thicker skin, and are more muscular than most Na’vi since they need to retain heat. Use lots of fur and hides to stay warm. 

- Larger feet and strong backs for climbing, and navigating the snow. 

- Pale skin so they can camouflage among the snow, also not much pigmentation since they reside in caves as well.

-Slight fur on ears and tails, ears are smaller and are more inwards because of the cold.

- Sunken eyes are an adaptation since they are up in higher elevation, exposed to lots of sunlight despite the snow. Eyeblack paint is to protect the reflectiveness of the sun.

- Their queues are braided into their front braids so that they can stay warm and not freeze off, also easier access since their always wearing lots of furs.

My Predictions for the Arctic Na'vi (Snow Na'vi:

They will either have more body fat, fur (or at least more body hair) or will wear heavy coats and or winter clothes, or a combination of the two of the three examples.

They will either have short tails or long tails covered in fur.

Their skin will be either Celeste Blue, Turquoise Blue, Aqua Blue, or a mix of the two of those.

They will be based upon either one or a combination or real-life arctic indigenous groups such as the Saami, Norway, Nenets, Khanty, Evenk, Aleut, Yupik, Inuit (Inuvialuit), and Inuit (Kalaallit).

They will ride animals that might be based on arctic animals like Polar Bears, Walrus or Musk Oxen.

They will live in and thus will build their structures out of little organic material instead of sculpting the snow and ice around them.

Glimpses into arctic Pandora (all artwork is by me, and the signatures are my more used online nickname)

Tauk lives with a lot of lakes. She's a skilled maker of fishing nets and other fish traps. She also makes dyed fabrics. Her grandmother is an expert of local natural pigments, fungi and berries alike, and she's a keen student. She's strong, outspoken and adventurous. An energetic powerhouse with her feet in the ground. While she has her heart in the right place for the most part, she does not always understand those who have less social skills, and might appear judgemental/intimidating to such cases. This is because she grew up being quite secure in herself, and doesn't seem to understand that not everyone can take such for granted.

Mokri'ena is bit of a daydreamer and an introvert. She loves to learn about stories from across Pandora. She has heard of the Sky People, Toruk Makto and the legendary warrior Neytiri. Many say she kind of exists outside of the moment she's in, outside of her body. She's interested in news and history. She always feels intimately aware of how frail safety and peace are. She can't stop thinking about the Sky People, or the Omaticaya and the Metkayina she has never met. She grew up being a little weird, - or well, just not really understanding other kids' concept of fun. She was a little artist who preferred her imagination over her loud and more sociable peers. As an adult she's keen to help those in need, as she has known the pain of being forgotten.

Tulìm is from a coastal settlement, from a terrain broken into many islands.

He was always an adventurer, - as he was born in a mainland tribe. The coastal islands always made him curious because he wanted to see more of his world, so he moved there and joined a trader ship crew.

For most of his life he was simply a trader ship navigator, and later a the captain.

He commands one of the biggest trader ships of the region. He has seen many lands outside of his own, and is known for his skills with diplomacy and leadership. He doesn't lead to benefit himself, but to serve his people and especially his crew.

His nemesis for life is an ice na'vi pirate. He spends his old, last days in a bitter hunt of his nemesis, until his worn-out body succumbs into the ocean for the last time.

Keyuk is the Olo'Eyktan of one of the many ice na'vi tribes. The era of his leadership has been a stable and quiet one. While a part of his humour is making a serious face to trick people, he's actually more known for his easygoing and humble personality. He knows his responsibilities, but has a pretty egalitarian approach to his social life. He breaks some of the traditions of his people by dressing like an average member of his society. He's never been a fan of trying to act like more than you are, - he's all bite and with none of the bark! This makes him well-respected and liked among his people.

The two main types of arctic na'vi:

(Left) Those of the land, - descenants of forest na'vi similiar to the Omaticaya, but with adaptations to cold, long winters. Most of their body is covered in fur.

(Right) Those of the waters, - arctic cousins to reef na'vi like Tau'nui and Metkayina. These 'ice na'vi' are even more extremely adapted to spending time in water than reef na'vi are, having even more powerful swimming tails and upwards-facing nostrils for easily getting air between their long dives. They don't have fur, but regulate their body heat by the layers of fat under their skin, much like cetaceans on Earth. Like reef na'vi, ice na'vi also have a symbiotic relationship with a tulkun-like sapient species.

This is an arctic viperwolf. Fur grows between their armor plates and most of the plateless regions of rheir bodies. Their shape is rounder and stubbier than that of the tropical viperwolves, for trapping more heat in their bodies.

Arctic ikran relatives also exist, and are popular flying steeds to many snow na'vi tribes. They're covered in filamentous structures resembling little hair fans.

Well, I'll make a full headcanon about all his favorite stuff ! Oh, and if you wanna ask something spicy, I think you can use the "anonymous" ask ! 😏

His favorite meal is actually Chilli Con Carne ! He loves when his food is just like him... Spicy, hot, and JUICY BABY.

He also loves desserts, especially with strawberries. HE LOVES STRAWBERRIES.

He's an "action guy", which means that he cannot take a break most of the time because he has that energy pack that needs to be used. Whenever he can go on mission outside, he will go. He always makes sure he can help anywhere whenever he got nothing else to do.

He loves to climb moutains and glaciers. He really enjoy the feeling of danger and adventure.

He's a very good singer and guitare player, so he likes to practice in his room sometimes.

He's also a very talented cook, thanks to his mother.

His favorite types of movie are horror and action. Some of his favorite movies are Halloween, The Silence Of The Lamb, The Conjuring, or Indepenance Day, 6 Underground and Mad Max.

His favorite TV show/series would probably be Stranger Things, My Wife And Kids and Hannibal.

He likes a lot of different types of music, but his favorite singers/groups are Yungblud, Machine Gun Kelly, Imagine Dragons and Post Malone.

Really love the concept of Snow Na'vis. I recently caught on to this fic and started to love the characters and the world/culture Ochomonos is creating for Quartich to be in--add to that the awesome art it comes with. I love their style! After reading their fic I've drawn some...stuff. First two are based on the fic, while the last one lives in my mind. I'm getting ahead of myself in this pair. Not even sure if they'll have a kitten.
