This may be a prickly subject, and I'm sorry if so. But I'm trying to learn more about Elvis, and every time I bring him up to people I know, they try to tell me he was this terrible person, and point me toward Priscilla's book, the movie made on it, and the discourse. Idk if you've talked about it on here (I tried searching your blog but couldn't find anything on it). If you're willing, I'd love to hear your take on it so I can see a more nuanced view.
The film Priscilla was greenlit roughly a month after Priscilla herself was informed that she was close to becoming financially insolvent in 2022. With a business partner, Brigitte Kruse, who allegedly helped broker the film deal, she established a limited liability company called Priscilla Presley Partners that was supposed to use her image and likeness to create several lines of merchandise to coincide with the film's release. That business partner is now suing Priscilla because she did not have the rights to her image or likeness, or any ability to use the Presley name, because she had already sold all of those rights and was no longer considered in good standing with Graceland or Elvis Presley Enterprises. The entire business deal, then, according to the lawsuit, was built on her misrepresentation of how much her image was worth.
The deal between the two of them fell apart after Riley Keough, Lisa Marie's daughter and Priscilla's granddaughter, settled with Priscilla to give her a lump sum of $1 million from Lisa Marie's estate and yearly amounts of $100,000. Priscilla sued very shortly after Lisa Marie's death because she thought Lisa Marie's signature on a will had been forged because Priscilla was not included in it. All of the assets were supposed to go directly to Lisa Marie's son, Benjamin Keough, who died in 2020, and her three daughters, two of whom are still teenagers. Now, part of those assets have been claimed by Priscilla and her other son, Navarone, who has no connection to the Presley family and has stated he is glad Lisa died.
Four months before Lisa's death, Lisa wrote to Sofia Coppola and made it clear she had strong concerns about the Priscilla film and was suspicious of the intentions behind it:
"As his daughter, I don’t read this and see any of my father in this character. I don’t read this and see my mother’s perspective of my father. ... I will be forced to be in a position where I will have to openly say how I feel about the film and go against you, my mother and this film publicly."
Lisa was enormously grateful for efforts put into 2022's Elvis to find her father's soul and to restore his dignity in a world that often turns him and his family into a joke:
"You can feel and witness Baz’s pure love, care, and respect for my father throughout this beautiful film, and it is finally something that myself and my children and their children can be proud of forever."
It is such a strong and powerful statement, to see how much Lisa valued family, not just her father but her own children and their legacy, and how willing she was to speak up no matter what was going on in her personal life to say what was right. On this and many other things, Lisa and Priscilla's values have rarely been in alignment. A friend and EPE business associate, Joel Weinshanker, said of her, "Lisa couldn't be bought, she couldn't be pushed. If she felt that something wasn't in Elvis' best interest, it was never about money. And she really is the only Presley that you could say that about."
Priscilla, though, has adjusted her stories about her time with Elvis almost every time she discusses it. For a quick example, she said in her book, which was released in 1985, that Elvis insisted she do her hair and makeup a certain way, that he had control over her look and would get upset if she didn't dress how he wanted. But in an interview with Ladies' Home Journal in 1973, she said that she made a deliberate choice to attend makeup school so that she could learn how to style herself, and that it was her idea to wear big, black hair and big, black eyeliner. She said she was embarrassed for going overboard. She said, "I wish that Elvis had said something, but he must have liked it because he never commented." This lines up with recollections from Patti Parry, a platonic friend of Elvis' and a hairstylist, who said Priscilla always wanted Patti to do her hair in a "big boombah," but that Priscilla would then get upset when Elvis didn't notice or didn't like it.
These changes are impossible not to notice if you follow her for any length of time. At the film premiere, she said it felt just like watching her life and said she was consulted on everything, since she was an executive producer. After the film came out, she said she couldn't understand why Coppola had changed so much about the story and misrepresented events. In the '70s, she said she and Elvis lived almost totally separate lives, that she came and went as she pleased, and that she loved this freedom. Later, she said she felt completely stifled and trapped and never left the house, even though she had friends she went out with all the time. In 2019, she tweeted a forceful denial about a National Enquirer story: "This is the Enquirer folks... please don't believe everything you read. ... Never planned on being buried next to Elvis. What will they come up with next?" But part of her settlement demands in her lawsuit against Riley in 2023 asked "to be buried next to Elvis." This year, she said in two separate interviews that Lisa was with her when Elvis died and that Priscilla had to break the news to her, despite the fact that Lisa was at Graceland when it happened. She has said she gave Elvis the idea to wear belts on his jumpsuits, to have a lightning bolt as his logo, to sing "An American Trilogy," though none of that is true. She retells the story about forcing Elvis to burn all of his spiritual books to prove he loved her as an almost funny anecdote about debrainwashing him, while Elvis later said it was the worst thing he ever agreed to, a desperate attempt to make her happy by giving up the things he valued the most. (For the record, this is my opinion about their relationship on both sides: thinking they could change themselves and each other to make it work. It never did.)
Every secondhand Elvis account has to be treated lightly and only valued for its consistency with known facts and other witnesses. I try to give enormous benefit of the doubt to anyone in the Elvis world because they often only have partial knowledge of what Elvis may have been thinking at any given time, and there are numerous examples of people who were taken advantage of by unscrupulous journalists who changed the story they wanted to tell. But Priscilla's stories sometimes are not even consistent with her own statements, which makes them very poor options indeed to base anything on. However careful we are about noting potential biases and inaccuracies in other memoirs, we have to be triply, quadruply careful with anything in which Priscilla involves herself because she has a vested interest in generating discourse today in order to make money. Unfortunately, Priscilla has a habit of stifling other accounts or making sensationalized statements each time there is a possibility that she will lose some of the cachet that comes with being an Elvis Source—after Elvis' death, when she believed she was going to inherit his airplane and disinvited everyone that Vernon said could fly in it to his funeral; when she sued the parents of one of Elvis' ex-girlfriends after he died because he had allowed them to live rent-free in a house he bought for them; when she claimed that Elvis wanted to reunite with her before his death, despite the fact that he was engaged to someone else and told many people he couldn't see a reunion ever happening with her; before Vernon's death, when she convinced him to make her an executor of the Presley estate until Lisa came of age; after Lisa came of age, when she convinced Lisa to let her stay on as partner; when Lisa accused Priscilla of misspending Lisa's money, during which time anonymous sources cropped up to say Lisa was in debt and drug-addled; when Priscilla was removed from her position as an EPE spokesperson but kept collecting $900,000 a year from the company; when Lisa died, and Priscilla sued once she learned she wasn't in the will; when Priscilla was no longer associated with EPE and decided to do another adaptation of a book that she has since recanted parts of and has contradicted before and after its release.
When Priscilla thinks there is a threat to her image and position, she does new interviews and projects to muddy the waters and stir public interest, whether it is true or false, positive or negative, laudatory or defamatory. She gets corrected by Elvis' surviving family members, girlfriends, friends, and fans, but these stories do not get the same reach no matter how much they are backed by contemporaneous documents and witnesses, or how many resources there are to educate the public on how Elvis' and Priscilla's attitudes about marriage and relationships changed—along with the rest of society—between 1960 and 1970.
I think almost any single-source project is not going to advance our understanding of Elvis in any way because no one individual can speak for him, and we are kind of obligated to include all the context we can in order to appreciate his character, his successes and failures, flaws and virtues—and to treat both himself and those around him as fully three-dimensional people who have their own blind spots. Priscilla is far too aware of her own image, and far too willing to change it to suit the audience, to be particularly valuable here.
She is next scheduled to appear at the Lexington (Kentucky) Comic & Toy Con.

Love is Embarrassing
Ep 1- House 1- Sofia
@bakersimmer
no one: absolutely no one: these girls: almost immediate deep conversation. and scarlett of course was like hey a new girlie swirl who can tell me how pretty i am which initially put sofia off tbh. i swear its the fishing for compliments thing. she just DOES IT . BUTTTTT... while sofia was like ehhh i dont know about this girl . they immediately started talking about other things besides how pretty scarlett thinks she is so that helped them click. not every contestant is going to go for scar almost immediately but sofia gave scar a shot to redeem herself and she did. a plus. i think sofia dug her a littttttllee bit after that. scar has to back up her looks for real.she relies on them too much. just like her dad.

there needs to be a compilation of every time emily axford has said "I'm like a German Shepherd" or referenced "going into German Shepherd mode."
update: @peopleareaproblem you are so right bestie, I command + F'd some episode transcripts and she says it first as Fig way back in ep 5 of freshman year! Also apparently my brain made up her saying it as Jet lol but she does say it as Sofia in the unsleeping city s2 ep 8, the rest are mostly Fig with one Ylfa.

Musa’s Discography Pt. 1
Yes, I spend way too long thinking about stuff like this about my characters leave me alone ajajajjaaa
But srly like 2 people have asked me about this and I’ve spent way too long thinking about what Musa discography would actually be like so… here is her discography with a way too detailed description of why I chose each of the songs, I had way too much fun with this.
First EP. Written in the later half of s2 and before s3 published in the summer between s2 and s3
I had no specific ‘theme’ for this one, just songs I felt fit Musa’s mentality and would be cool for her first project
For the first EP, which consists of:
The Beginning by Madison Beer.
I just really love this intro it’s a gorgeous showcase of vocals and it’s beautiful and perfect.
I Hate the Way by Sofia Carson.
I love this song. Musa would base if mostly off of Riven’s epic screw up in s2 ch27. Also the guitar solo part feels perfect for her.
Whispers by Halsey.
I can’t quite explain why but this song is so Musa-coded to me. At least my version of her. She builds walls up and tries to not care and fails miserably every time. Also touches slightly on the depression that she def never adressed before going to Alfea and meeting the girls
Run and Hide by Sabrina Carpenter.
I feel like this song fits Musa’s mentality in s1 and part of s2 perfectly especially when it comes to romantic love. ‘Started thinking love’s a loaded gun, nobody wants to fight’ ‘If you can’t hide run, if you can’t run hide’ ‘I don’t wanna run I don’t wanna hide’ it’s just perfect for how she used to think and I really love the idea of her writing this precisely as she starts to let go of that mentality
favorite crime by Olivia Rodrigo.
This would be a more story-telling type song written with Helia cause I feel like putting those two together they would absolutely go full story tellers and poem-like lyrics and this feels like smth they would absolutely write one night they couldn’t sleep cause they love a good sob love story
Ribs by Lorde.
Written about the Winx and the Specialists with a sprinkle of dreading growing up
Second EP. Written during the first half of s3, published right before Winter Break
This one did have a slight ‘theme’ to it since it was mostly written while she was fighting with Riven over secrets on both sides and she was very frustrated with herself and projecting a bit on him.
Hard to Love by Rose.
This feels very Musa-coded to me. She has that instinct of ‘oh shoot I’m loved? Fucking run for the hills!’ But more like… again, she builds walls. So I can see her writing this one night very frustrated with herself like, why am I like this?
Rock Bottom by Hailee Steinfeld.
I love this song and I feel like it suits Rivusa so perfectly in the first half of s3 ‘We’re on the right side of rock bottom and I hope that we keep falling. We’re on the good side of bad karma, cause we keep on coming back for more. We’re on the right side of rock bottom, and to you I just keep crawling. You’re the best kind of bad smth, cause we keep on coming back for more.’ Literally them at this point before they learn to properly communicate. Also ‘what are we fighting for? Seems like we do it just for fun.’ Love this song
Monster in Me by Little Mix.
Another song that suits them when they’re at rock bottom. ‘Touch me, why don’t we kill each other slowly?’ ‘The monster in me loves the monster in you’. Def can see Musa writing this when she’s frustrated with herself and Riv cause she knows why they’re both screwed up but can’t quite figure out how to get past it
when the party’s over by Billie Eilish.
This was when, for a moment Musa considered just calling it quits cause she wonders if maybe they’re both too fucked up to make it work and she wrote this whilst in depression. She also realized that she was hurting him by picking fights and not being honest and wrote this in response to that realization
Midnight Rain by Taylor Swift.
This one was also co-written by Helia, they went for another story-telling not-to-be love story.
False God by Taylor Swift.
Another song that feels oh so Rivusa-coded to me. Like, cmon this is one of those songs that played in the back of my head every single time I had them argue in s3 and feels like the perfect song to end an album all about fighting the one you love

any rina recs? i LOVE cherry & bad friend but i’m SO out of the loop on her other stuff!!
hohoho I’ve been waiting for this one
cherry is literally my favourite rina song everrr ur taste is impeccable
some recs:
tokyo love hotel - certified hit and definitely similar vibes to bad friend and cherry
paradisin’ - ok so imagine if ‘clueless’ ‘wild child’ and sofia coppola’s ‘marie antoinette’ combined their joint slay in an audio format along with British accents. That’s this song. It’s iconic and incredible and chronically underrated.
dynasty - I say every song makes me ascend but this song literally makes me ascend. It’s pop it’s rock it’s a little bit metal it’s the best album opener to exist. if u like it deffo check out snakeskin (the album closer)
holy til you let me go - queer angst, jaw dropping vocals, amazing production.
hold the girl - amazing vocals again, this one’s very uk garage (I’m aware some people hate that lmao)
frankenstein - pop perfection
cyber stockholm syndrome - very similar vibes to cherry but more melancholy???
I personally think her best project is ‘sawayama’ but all her albums/eps are made with such passion and care that they are all totally worth a listen

my mama and i do this thing every sunday that we call 'sundays with elvis' where we watch one elvis movie (maybe two) and then put on elvis music, we talk about our week and sometimes they are elvis related things and sometimes they aren't but we try to include elvis as much as we can. (would you guys like to do a Sundays with Elvis maybe with me on here to just decompress after a long week? I would love it ♡)
this weekends thing that came up was the Priscilla movie (there is no direct hate to Priscilla in this so if you're looking for that you might wanna move on !!)
and none of y'all asked for this but this is just my take on it. this shit might be a little long so get ready.
Tumblr media
nate fucking jacobs is that you?? i know it is, i feel bad stereotyping him because he's trying to branch out and go you, king, slay but stay away from my king. the vibes are just not right, not even a chance in hell for 60's Elvis. how can people think this even looks right. now, i know a lot of people felt that way about austin when he got the role of Elvis, nobody could ever be Elvis Presley, there is only one. austin at least gave off the vibes, the energy, dug deep into the soul and i don't know Jacob's process or whatever but something tells me with how fast this movie got rolling he didn't study our beloved. i know this move isn't about Elvis, he already has one and this one is about Priscilla.
also i find it to be funny that EPE wouldn't let them use Elvis' actual music in the movie and the little review they left saying "looks like a college movie, the set designs are horrific that's not what Graceland looks like." and while i agree with them, i think sofia has a certain style she does and that's respectable but however, i expected more for a movie like this.
not to mention Priscilla herself has said that she wished she wouldn't of told some of the stories the way she did and I respect her for saying she made mistakes but then again my question is, did she have any rights to the movie and did she talk to sofia about some of the exaggerations she admitted to? or did she just leave sofia to take those and run with them?
overall, I don't see Priscilla as a villain, satan or the wicked witch (or whatever anyone calls her) in any story but there are some things she has done that I don't agree with.
however, I will not see this movie because part of me has this gut feeling even though people have spoken out and said that it doesn't make Elvis look bad and part of me wants to believe that Priscilla loves him like she says she does and if this made Elvis look bad or tarnished him in anyway that she wouldn't be okay with it being released.
again, that's part of me hoping.
i'm not excited for this movie, i'm not too keen on sofia i've never liked her movies, i don't know how much to trust priscilla on this, she loves Elvis to this day and proves that but another part of me is very protective of Elvis like i think and hope priscilla would be (probably even more so because she was actually married to the man and knew him on a personal level whereas i didn't). i just adore Elvis but i will not see this movie or support it in anyway. i'm nervous if anything about this movie and part of me thinks i am for sure overreacting but i am certainly a drama queen.
~
i'd love to hear what you guys have to say, it doesn't even have to be about this, it can be about anything Elvis related. I'd love to chat. ♡

i just want to know what the people that think rina were never going to happen think them never having any closure meant? intentionally not having them have any closure in s1 or 2 meant what to the people that thought they would never happen? in s1 ricky didn’t know she was staying - i mean to be fair neither did she - and they never truly talked. he went back to nini without them having any conversation and him just ignoring or pushing down whatever feelings he gained in s1 because she told him they have no reason to be talking anymore at thanksgiving. his look at her in 1x09 alone showed he still had feelings for her but like he said things are different now but not his feelings for her; i.e “maybe i’m just back to who i always was” - a person scared of change starting to regress and clinging onto his relationship with nini for safety.
did they see the s2 flashback scene as closure? because that wouldn’t make sense with having her specifically say they never talked about it and that “ricky is so happy now” when he wasn’t at all. that scene was her giving up so to say and putting her feelings out there thinking she’d never see him again. it was closure for HER in a way of her thinking it was the end of their relationship, but her not leaving is what changed that completely. they never had closure and the audience never had closure with their relationship. it doesn’t help right after that episode they had her “moving on” from ricky without ever talking to him about her feelings or confronting her feelings much like ricky in s1. in both seasons one of them had to leave or stop interacting with the other to put rini and portwell together (and sofia confirmed this with saying pre s3 that ricky being in her life is always going to make it hard for her to move past what she had with him).
the show purposely never gave them any closure. in fact it just constantly made you wonder what was going on with them while they were in other relationships like ricky being visibly confused in almost every conversation they had in s2, him triple looking back at her in the first ep of s2, him talking about gina staying and not talking to anyone in the pre s2 video calls, gina saying “anybody” in the 3x01 last scene, the look on her face when she saw him at the end, refusing to talk about ricky with ej in 3x02, and fondly staring at him in 3x02 as he’s auditioning. i’m sure there’s other moments as well for both of them.
genuinely what did people who never thought they’d get together think all that meant? anti rinas love to talk about bad writing but the only bad writing would have been never acknowledging the elephant in the room since s1 which has always been their unresolved mutual feelings.

Right, I'm dropping some HSMTMTS opinions, because honestly, looking through the tag, I feel like i'm watching a different show to some of you???
For context, I have loved Rina since 1x05, but I also properly hopped on the Portwell bandwagon in s2, and genuinely enjoy both ships as written. In fact, other than Ricky/Lily, there are v few canon relationships on this show that I haven't enjoyed at some point.
Anyway, a few thoughts on the love triangle that I may get shot for, but oh well.
1) Gina is not emotionally cheating on EJ. Like yeah, her and Ricky have got their friendship back, and the nature of their friendship can come across as flirty, but Gina rn is fully invested in her relationship with EJ. Her and Ricky being close (especially given he was her first friend in Salt Lake) isn't a crime. Even in WDYKAL, she is fully in character to piss off EJ. She is not suddenly over EJ and back into Ricky.
2) Ricky is not trying to get in the way of Portwell. Yeah, he was being a bit of a dick with that comment about EJ stealing Gina because we all know that's not true. But other than that, he has respected their relationship. He had no intentions of telling Gina that these feelings have resurfaced for him, evident from the fact he swears Carlos to secrecy and is devastated when Channing catches it on camera. And he also makes a point of asking "did it show?", demonstrating that he is trying to keep his feelings under wraps. He allowed Gina to talk about EJ without getting defensive, he even answered EJ's question of why Gina was mad at him without a sarcastic comment. Saying Ricky is purposely getting in the way of PW is character assassination for no good reason. The boy has feelings, yeah, but he hasn't acted on them and the narrative has shown nothing to suggest he would while Gina is with EJ.
3) EJ is being a bit of a tool this season, but honestly, I don't think this is the wasted character development y'all think it is. I don't know about all of your own lives, but something I've found in mine is that growth is very rarely linear. Yes, EJ learnt and grew a lot in s2, and there are times it feels he has forgotten that in s3. But also, he is an incredible stressed 18 year old: flaring up in the form of your former self isn't bad writing, that's just what happens when you're a kid going through shit. I am not worried about what they're doing with EJ at all, and I think by the end of the season, he will have developed in a way that is in line with what the writers did for him last season.
4) I completely agree that they should have slowed their horses when it came to reintroducing the triangle dynamic. Especially because it does feel like PW only got a few eps without drama. But also, this is a teen drama, that's kind of how it works? Also, based on the current writing (and I know I'm in the minority here), I genuinely still think PW will be together at the end of this season. Or at the v least, they won't break up until right at the end, and it won't have anything to do with Ricky.
5) I genuinely don't think the Rina storyline is fan service. Maybe WDYKAL was a *little* bit but I loved every second so I'm not complaining. Tim has said right from the start that Rina was born out of them seeing Josh and Sofia's chemistry in 1x05, and the team feeling that they needed to write towards that. And so they did. Similarly, I feel that the PW stuff in season 2 was so great because it felt that the writers saw something v natural between these characters, and just wrote towards it in a way that felt organic with the story. Given how much of a mess 2b was, I still think Portwell is one of the best written parts of it. However , in s2, there was only closure for Rina on Gina's side, so to say it was a 'done storyline' when we've actually never seen Ricky's POV, isn't fair either? Like idk, there are plenty of things I would have done differently when it comes to the love triangle, but also I don't think that any of their dynamic this season has felt out of pocket, like it all seems to follow the tone and prev writing?
Anyway, long controversial venting over. Please don't come for me xoxo

i’m never good at these but the series finale was phenomenally concluded. each character, every song, dance number, outfit, etc. was all done with such dedication and passion. it’s hard to say goodbye to my favorite cast of theater kids but it’s never really a goodbye, more of a see you later rather than the harsh reality that goodbye can hold. each episode made me smile, laugh, and tear up; some episodes making me sob into my pillow *cough* eps 7&8. albeit, there was never a dull moment with any scene, even if some were with people who weren’t my favorite. to Tim Federle, i’d like to thank him endlessly for bringing together such a strong group of dedicated humans and actors, and creating the safest community for fans, despite the challenges that were faced throughout the years.
to my favorite on-screen pairing, sofia wylie and joshua bassett, i’d love to thank them for being nothing but determined, tender-hearted souls and giving it their absolute all for this silly little alphabet show. thank you for giving me something to look forward to, and thank you for shaping this show into what it is today, and what it will always be forever. a home, despite its fictional nature. thank you.
thank you.
thank you.
and, to every rina out there… we fucking won. have a great day. 🫶🏼

Thoughts on 3x07
Overall loved this ep, so many fun moments with Carlos and seb, Carlos and ricky, the girls and especially Kourtneus solo!! And it was nice getting hints that Maddox and jet will probably end up at east high next season 🤞🏽.
The Rina content…..maybe controversial but I like that the coat check scene was more a moment of tension than an almost kiss…it was hinted at that they were both thinking abt it with taht no pda announcement, but it was a subtle moment as it should be.
Personally I think their later conversation delivered everything that I wanted from their story this ep. I loved seeing ricky conflicted about confessing and then deciding not to for ginas sake since she JUST broke up with ej, the acting from him has been so good this whole season. He’s still pining and his feelings seemingly get stronger every episode.
Meanwhile, Gina had a really moving arc this episode and Sofia killed it. The portwell break up unfolded so well and I’m glad they touched on the fact that Gina and ej are on totally different paths and need different things. In her scene with ricky at the end, I love that she seemed a little hopeful? I got the impression that she wanted the thing he said to be about her, maybe subconsciously bc she hasn’t actually acknowledged that she still has feelings for him. I definitely think she looked a bit disappointed, even if she doesn’t really know why or is not ready to think about it yet. And then she LOOKED BACK! Tim is definitely going for a SLOW burn. I like that the ep was hinting at the mutual feelings here, and that neither ricky or Gina are aware of the fact that their feelings are requited.

Christian Slater Movie/Tv checklist.
When I find a actor/actress I like I will go through their IMDB and make a list of the films I think look interesting and watch them. Most of the time that means watching every single movie/ tv show they have been in. Titles with a ✔ at the end are the ones I've seen.

[INTERVIEW] DAY6's Young K hopes to bring you comfort with his 1st full album 'Letters with notes': 'You make Young K exist'
by Sofia-Sayson
Young K first debuted as the bassist, main rapper, and lead vocalist of one of the renowned boy bands in the Korean music industry, DAY6 in 2015. Six years later, he debuted solo in September with the EP 'Eternal.' Now, Young K has come back with his first solo release since returning from the military in April with his first-ever solo full-length album, 'Letters with notes.' 'Letters with notes' contains 11 new songs, in which, notably, Young K took part as a lyricist and composer for all the tracks. The singer kicked off his return with the melodic pop-punk pre-release single "let it be summer." Featuring the title song "nothing but," the album also includes "waited," "Dreamer," "Bungee Jumping," "natural," "STRANGE," "SOUL," "playground," "babo," and "what is..." The album is full of messages revolving around hope, self-love, and life where the listeners would be able to hear Young K's soothing and vibrant vocal prowess. The title song, in particular, conveys the concept of continuing to shout for love and singing "This is all I have" until the end, even when no effort is working. In the final song, he asks, "If what we had wasn't love, what is love?" In honor of his much-awaited solo return, allkpop had the pleasure of talking to Young K about 'Letters with notes,' participating in the creation of his album, a piece of advice, and more. Read our exclusive interview with the multi-talented Young K below! Young K's shout-out to allkpop:
allkpop: Hi, Young K! First of all thank you for your time answering our questions, and congratulations on your new album, 'Letters with notes'! I'm sure that there were a lot of preparations for this full album compared to mini- and single albums. Could you please tell us how the album preparations went for this release, from cherry-picking the songs to working with producers in the studio, recording the songs, and filming the music video?
Young K: Thank you for having me! I decided to work on an album because I wanted to sing, and I also missed being on stage. Honestly, I didn't initially aim for a full album; I just wanted to write good songs. Since I put my best effort into each and every song, I couldn’t predict which one would be selected as the title track. After handing in all the demos, they go through a confirmation process, and that’s how the album comes together.
allkpop: You've been participating in the creation of your albums for years now. Do you feel or consider this as an achievement every time you get to write lyrics and compose songs? How is it important for you to take part in making your own music? The feeling is just different when you get to participate in the creation of the songs, right?
Young K: I think one of the biggest things about creating my own album is the responsibility. There wouldn't be an album if I didn't write songs, which means fewer chances for me to perform on stage. However, I do feel joy and freedom in the process of songwriting. I get to be whoever I want to be, and I can create any character I like.
allkpop: What is the difference between writing songs for yourself and writing songs for other artists? I recently interviewed H1-KEY and Jo Yu Ri, where you also took part in writing some of their songs. H1-KEY members are thankful for your participation and Jo Yu Ri wants to have a special stage collaboration with you!
Young K: The most significant aspect I prioritize when writing a song is ensuring that it aligns with the music. Once I know who the song is intended for, I research them and envision how they might approach the songwriting. I'm very grateful that they chose the lyrics and performed with such talent. It’s a huge honor for me as well, and I'm down for anything.
allkpop: 'Letters with notes' has 11 new songs, and notably, you took part in writing and composing all of them. If you could summarize the message you'd like to deliver with all 11 songs in a few sentences, what would it be? How can you tell in words the whole message you'd like to convey with the whole album?
Young K: The summarization of this album would be "love." Love can be in many forms, such as love for My Days (DAY6's fandom name), family, or even music. Without love in our lives, it'd be very hard to go on. Each song holds different shapes and sizes of love with different words and notes.
allkpop: You gave a bunch of pieces of advice to your juniors. I especially heard that Stray Kids' Bang Chan learned a lot from you! What is it that you would like to tell or relay to your younger self or trainee self, that may be of help to younger idols pursuing the same career as yours as well?
Young K: To my younger self I would say, "You think you're doing your best, right? Do more. Prepare more. More is coming." But to everyone else, I would say, "Give your best, but always remember to stay healthy. That means both physically and mentally. Always take care of yourself, look at yourself, and make sure you know how you are feeling." I would say this because I only know the life of mine. The words are relevant not only to those aspiring to become musicians but to all individuals who are in this world together.
allkpop: Apart from your singing career, you're also the DJ of 'Kiss the Radio.' How's your experience working on the show so far? You've interacted with a lot of idols, from 2nd to 4th generation idols! Do you have any fun or memorable episodes or stories from the show?
Young K: Being able to meet a variety of different guests remains intriguing to me. Seeing artists who are over 10 years younger makes me realize how time is passing. The most memorable guests would be Sungjin and Dowoon. With them, I can play around the most.
allkpop: Next month will mark your 8th anniversary since your debut in DAY6! September is the month when you made your solo debut as well. Congratulations by the way! I wanted to ask if it is just a coincidence that you debuted both in DAY6 and as a solo artist in the month of September. I also realized that your new album, 'Letters with notes' will be released in the same month as well, September!
Young K: Thank you so much! I suppose these occurrences feel like destiny, as no one intentionally planned such coincidences, myself included. Yet, people often say that things happen for a reason, so I guess I'll just enjoy this journey and strive to make you all proud.
allkpop: What growth or improvements have you seen from yourself for 'Letter with notes' compared to 'Eternal'?
Young K: Different me, me with the addition of time. My voice has changed — how I think of it as growth — so the results are likely different. As producer Jisang Hong told me, continuous growth is crucial. If that’s not possible, at least strive for meaningful changes. I've dedicated effort to my musical growth, yet the ultimate assessment rests with the listeners.
allkpop: Since the album title is 'Letters with notes,' if you were to write a letter to Young K, to yourself right now, and after a few years, let's say 5 years, you'll get back to this letter and read it as Young K from the future. What would the letter contain?
Young K: The letter would contain: “How are you? Are you good? Hope you're enjoying music as much as I am. Stay happy.”
allkpop: You debuted as the bassist of DAY6! Over the years, have you ever found an interest in playing other musical instruments?
Young K: I tried playing other instruments, but I haven’t truly succeeded in mastering any of them. Currently, my main focus is on becoming a better vocalist.
allkpop: I read in an interview that one of your insecurities is your face. That some people are intimidated by you, that you look angry. Are you still working on practicing smiling in front of the mirror, or have you just accepted your looks and who you are? Are you the kind of person who often thinks or worries about what other people may think about you?
Young K: I've stopped consciously practicing smiling since I haven't heard anyone being intimidated recently. Fortunately, I've had many opportunities to naturally smile. But yes, I still consider how others perceive me and interpret my words. It’s not about my own insecurity, but rather about listeners' comfort.
allkpop: To wrap up this interview, do you have anything else to say to allkpop readers and your fans who are going to read this article? Feel free to also drop your goals, be they music- or personal-related!
Young K: Hope all of you stay safe and healthy! Take care of yourself. Ask yourself how you are feeling. The most I can do is sing for you, and I hope it brings some comfort. My goal is to continue performing on stage for as long as possible. This won't be possible without all of you, so please understand how amazing you are. You make Young K exist.

I agree about most substantially deliberate HSM parallels ending on s1. I feel like Josh and Sofia's chemistry as Ricky and Gina was an unexpected goldmine that fell in Tim's hands and he adjusted accordingly (possibly rewrote portions of the script or changed character backgrounds/stories or personalities) after all the screen tests with every actor! I may be in the minority, but I feel like original plans for the show were supposed to keep R*ni the whole time and will they wont they them like some annoying Ross Rachel rehash but Tim couldnt waste the potential of Rina (tested the waters with those middle eps and boy did we fishes snap at that fishing line 😂). That's why s1 sometimes feels disconnected with the pivot to Rina and the abrupt pivot back to R*ni (like 2 different stories). Season 2, he really started delving deep into Rina and you can see so clearly the groundwork he laid out for an angsty Rina will they wont they slow burn that failed with R*ni in s1. The interesting part is you can see in the narrative that Tim has written and has been writing Gina as the "Gabriella" lead since s1, even though Nini is presented as primary lead. Honestly that's why s1 has a disconnect to me sometimes too because it feels like the wrong protagonist is being followed and the wrong story being told?? if that makes sense.
Now I feel like though he's not persisting on HSM parallels, he is dropping little hints as reminders to keep viewers on track. Costuming for example, is sometimes deliberate. One of the biggest someone paralleled was the Troyella floral pink and blue, which Rina got 😮 Ricky's skate rate style imo has never been shirts like that, and though it works, the departure from his typical style just to make him wear that blue orange striped shirt seems deliberate too. It's a subtle but blatant iykyk kind of thing but if you don't, you'll blink and miss it kind of thing at the same time. The person who found that link should get applause! Cuz technically yeah, both pw and Rina have had "Troyella" moments this season, but the costuming seems like a deliberate way to subtly remind viewers that if you get baited by the pw "Troyella" HSM 2 thing, you'll miss the actual story playing out here. It's really quite brilliant that it makes me want to go back from the beginning and rewatch to find more of these interesting ways he's been foreshadowing Rina!
ahh first of all THANK YOU FOR SENDING ME THISSSSSS!!!! i loved reading all of it.
while i mostly agree about everything about this, i’d only discuss on the part that rini was set to be on and off. like i can imagine it being like that definitely, but also they were always doomed and they made it clear in the s1 finale that they will never work again like they did once (not all couples are meant to be together… sometimes people change). rini’s arc is strangely to me one of the best on the show. probably the most coherent and cohesive writing between s1 and s2. everything about it was hinted and it makes so much sense that is so hard for me to believe it wasn’t planned since day one.
i definitely think seeing the rina chemistry changed a lot in the future of the series i so agree with that. i mean, tim himself said that after they shoot the car scene he was so shook and he wanted to keep writing towards that (and did!). but like rini, s1 rina finale set up was so amazingly done that sometimes it’s just hard to believe that it wasn’t planned since the beginning. tim has always been so messy and talked about how he wanted to explore all the chemistry between the cast (and he did because why everyone dated everyone in the core four😭) and also with his rants since the very s1 about how he grew up with dawsons creek (very known for his surprising ship that ended up going down on history), so i think the possibility rina has always been the plan exists. i mean, he did write the car scene before he saw them so he was already planning something with them…
the part about how s1 felt weird because it felt like they were following the wrong protagonist is so so so true. gina having the whole moving away all the time storyline just as gabriella wasn’t a coincidence at all. also nini not having any gabriella trait besides playing her in the show😭 i mean, if you look at it know, it kinda makes sense. the show making you think nini was ricky’s troy gabriella, when at the end of the day it was always gina👩‍💻
also i love that you pointed out the costume thing because i agree with that, specially with ricky wearing that kind of stuff because it’s not really his style so it def seems on purpose. i think someone also pointed out that his spin dip shirt or the one in the clip he’s singing in the finale (they look so much alike so idk which one) were the same as troy’s in the hsm2 poster. if we’re talking about troyella real parallels that’s what we should talk about!!!
again thank u so much for dropping this here❤️❤️🫶🏻
