Perlman was so much more "class clown" than I was expecting-- having a ton of fun, a ton of energy, bouncing off of the audience quite energetically. Roy and Jay were great, too:

Like he said, not a straight man on the set! I'll bet that show was a blast to work on. If you can carve out a good chunk of time, it's worth watching the entire Q & A. It's one of my favorites of all the cons that were filmed and shared. I believe it was the first one after the show was canceled but everyone was certain that another network would pick up the show, and Koslow was pushing hard for a least one movie, and it was looking like we'd actually get one. Unfortunately after this con, Perlman made appearances at a couple others where he encountered some of the more, ummm, fanatical and aggressive Classic fans, in ways that soured him on doing any more of them. He finally relented and made the surprise appearance in 1995 at A Distant Shore in LA, which just happened to be the only con I was able to attend. I got lucky. We all did. He did another one in 1999, but I think that was it as far as BATB appearances.

Nan's thoughts on Diana were fascinating--

Yes, they were. She had such an influence on the way I learned to consume media and analyze aspects of a character that I might've missed. We didn't agree on everything re: Diana, but we shared a brain when it came to Vincent. Were you able to watch the full panel with Nan? It's well worth it.

He wasn't going to share her until he absolutely had to. She was his little secret, and I love that about a character who's normally so open with his father.

That's because his own ability to imagine things has been so vital to him. If you can't ever see the mountains, it's important that you be able to fully imagine them. One of the smaller details in Nan's writing that I appreciate so much is that she has Vincent sucking down all the movies and travelogues Diana rents for him, pausing a single image to study it, sometimes for so long that the VCR shuts off. It's the little things like that that make her writing so memorable to me.

Diana used her own status/experience to argue against Vincent's wrong path he was pursuing ("human standards apply to you, too; and you're WRONG")

This is so hugely important to their dynamic.

Well, it was a moral choice and a matter of expediency. I think V believed that anyone who threatened an innocent with violence (not just Cathy) didn't fall within his own moral standards of where one might deserve a second chance. They were being an active threat to people he loved, so he eliminated that threat. Easy peasy. I kind of think he probably didn't give a whole lot of thought to those he'd killed until this toxic alchemy was created when the desire he felt for Cathy became hard to distinguish from his desire to protect her. When the one need began to feed the other, and vice versa. That's when things started to get sticky and eventually led to his downfall.

But Diana has been able to see things from both sides in a way V hasn't. She knows and is able to crawl inside the minds and emotions of both victim and perpetrator, so her moral authority is different from his - more highly refined, perhaps. And she expects him to operate on her level, not his. And, by God, he does it! He learns to see things differently, to make decisions more with his head than with his gut. She tells him flat out that he can't keep going around slaughtering people just because he's half out of his mind with grief and anger. Because that makes him operate in ways that betray her own moral standards and she knows he's better than that.

Sorry, I went on a tangent there, but the fic I'm working on right now explores a lot of these same issues, so it's up front in my mind.

Bits and Bobs….

While I normally have a theme to my posts,this week I'm just clearing out some random recipes I've mixed. Enjoy.

Mix #174 Dr Funk

2 1/4oz black pot still rum 1/2oz lime juice 1/2oz lemon juice 1/2oz Demerara syrup 1/4oz grenadine 1/4oz absinthe 1oz seltzer

Shake everything except seltzer with ice,pour into glass,top with seltzer and stir.

Created by Don Beach sometime in the 1950's,this was named after the physician Robert Louis Stevenson had in Samoa named Dr Bernard Funk. Originally intended as a cure for laziness,it was made to make the absinthe more palatable with citrus and sugar,but Don added rum to make it a proper Tiki drink. It's super funky with the grenadine coming through and an absinthe finish. You'll either love it or hate depending on how much funk you can stand. I think Bootsy would have approved.

Mix #175 Passport to Martinique

1oz Denizen Merchant Reserve rum 1/2oz unaged Martinique rum 1/2oz Wray & Nephew overproof rum 1oz lime juice 1/2oz passionfruit syrup 1/oz orgeat 1/4oz orange curacao

Shake or blend with one cup crushed ice and pour into glass.

A drink from the 2022 Hukilau convention,this has a nice sweet/tart balance with heavy agricole funk. Another drink for folks who like it funky. Good bit of kick too.

Mix #176 Quarantine Order

1.5oz Appleton Signature rum 1.5oz Smith & Cross rum 1oz lime juice 1oz grapefruit juice 1/2oz cinnamon syrup 1/2oz passionfruit syrup 5 dashes Angostura bitters

Shake with ice and pour into mug.

From Wiliam Prestwood at Pagan Idol,you can guess from the name why it was created. The cinnamon comes through without real burn(think cinnamon roll),while there is some tartness and funk. The S&C gives it kick. A good drink for when you're stuck at home.

Mix #177 Lost Lake Cocktail

2oz dark Jamaican rum 3/4oz passionfruit syrup 3/4oz lime juice 1/2oz pineapple juice 1/4oz maraschino liqueur* 1/4oz Campari*

Shake with ice and pour into mug.

*I used Cherry Heering and Aperol.

The signature cocktail of the now shuttered Lost Lake bar in Chicago,which unfortunately closed due to COVID. The original was made with passionfruit liqueur,but the syrup is much easier to find. A nice blend of sweet and tart with the aperitif finishing. Use your favorite Jamaican rum to keep this modern classic alive.

Mix #178 Bolo

1oz gold Puerto Rican rum 3/4oz aged Martinique rum 1oz pineapple juice 1/2oz lime juice 1/2oz passionfruit syrup 1/oz honey syrup 1 dash Angostura bitters

Blend with ice for five seconds and pour into hollowed out pineapple.

So the story goes that this is an adaptation of Don Beach's Pi-Yi cocktail. Mr Beach was notorious for encoding his recipes to keep them from being stolen. Beachbum Berry worked with former Don bartender Bob Esmino to come up with this recipe. There are several variations which use the same ingredients,just with slightly different proportions,so feel free to play with tweaking this to get it the way you like. Sweet and fruity with rum funk on the end,you could call it a Boo Loo Lite. Very nice. And no,I didn't use a hollowed pineapple again,I'm too lazy of a bachelor.

Mix #179 Alice on South Island

1.5oz 151 Demerara rum 1/4oz maraschino liqueur* 1.5oz lemon juice 1oz passionfruit syrup 1oz cream of coconut 12 drops absinthe

Shake vigorously with ice and pour into mug.

*Again I used Cherry Heering.

From the drink card of Lost Temple Traders' Mad Tiki Cup mug(I have the set,but used the pic off their site because they're better photogs than I am). It's sweet and fruity with an absinthe finish. With an ounce and a half of 151,after a couple of these you'll swear the cat is talking to you. And you won't care. A good drink to finish off 'one of those' weeks.

Jan also raises questions in the declarative: Why I Collect Netsukes, The Battle Scars That Soldiers Get or Catholic Church in London; the latter where Jan revisits her convent days while in London or The Pope in Dorothy’s Magic Shoes where Jan reacts to Easter experiences in Sydney where she lived for fifteen years with her husband and two children. Most of the poems make literary references where Jan puts two and two together. The answer is not always obvious, however.

386 of Jan Ball’s poems appear in journals such as: Calyx, Phoebe, and Storm Cellar in the U.S. and internationally. Jan’s three chapbooks were published with Finishing Line Press as well as her first full-length poetry collection, I Wanted to Dance with My Father. She has been nominated twice for the Pushcart as well as twice for Best of the Net. At the personal level, Jan was a nun for seven years then met her Aussie husband and lived with him and their two children for fifteen years in Australia. The mine, which is 100% owned by OZ Minerals and is one of Australia's largest undeveloped copper projects, has the potential to produce 65,000 t of copper and 67,000 oz of gold annually for 20 years.

Following OZ Minerals' Board approval for the Carrapateena project's development in August 2017, phase one construction began.

Carrapateena's net present value was estimated at $916 million in an update to the feasibility study that was released in August 2017. The bottom half of the operation is currently the subject of a feasibility study regarding its potential transformation into a block cave.

The project Carrapateena produced its first concentrate in December 2019 and is working with the sub-level cave system to mine and process a 91Mt ore resource. By the end of 2020, it plans to increase production to 4.25 Mtpa, with throughput rates of 4.7–5.0 Mtpa by 2023.

As a result of the initial focus, Carrapateena's project development costs are anticipated to range between $950 million and $98 million.

By the end of 2021, the first stage of the Carrapateena block cave expansion feasibility study is expected to be finished.

Rudy Gomez made the discovery of the copper-gold deposit at Carrapateena in 2005. In May 2011, Rudy Gomez (58 percent), Teck Australia (34 percent), and minorities (8 percent) sold the project to OZ Minerals.

Location, geology, and reserves of Carrapateena The project is at Pernatty Station, and its infrastructure is at Oakden Hills Station.

The iron oxide, copper, and gold (IOCG) ore deposit known as Carrapateena can be found approximately 250 kilometers to the southeast of OZ Minerals' Prominent Hill mine. It covers a 1,070 km2 area in the center of South Australia and consists of four exploration licenses.

The Carrapateena deposit is in the eastern margin of the Gawler Craton and has a diameter of 300 meters and a vertical depth of 1,000 meters. It is hosted by the Carrapateena Breccia Complex (CBC), which is covered by Stuart Shelf sediments that extend for 470 meters.

The mineralisation at Carrapateena is overwhelmed by coarse-grained dispersed chalcopyrite with normal events of sulfide vein-fill and blebs.

The Carrapateena mine was estimated to have 91Mt of probable ore reserves as of June 2019, with a grade of 1.6% copper, 0.67g/t gold, and 8g/t silver.

The mineral resource at Carrapateena was estimated to be 970Mt with a grade of 0.5 percent copper, 0.2 g/t gold, and 3 g/t silver.

Recovery and ore processing at the Carrapateena mine For ore extraction, the underground copper and gold mine will use a block caving technique with two 500-meter-high lifts.

The block cave mine will have two declines, one for the main access and one for the production access. A tunnel boring machine will be used to build the main access decline, and the drill and blast method will be used to build the production access decline.

The majority of the ore will be crushed underground, and a conveyor will transport the product to the processing plant. Ore will be transported to the surface by approximately 16 load haul dump loaders.

Using conventional grinding and flotation techniques, the processing plant is anticipated to process 12.4 million tonnes of pre-crushed ore annually to produce copper-gold concentrate. Before being packed into containers for transportation by the Adelaide to Darwin railway to the Adelaide port, the obtained concentrate will go through three stages of cleaner flotation.

The tailings will be stored in a facility that is being built about 2 kilometers south-east of the concentrator plant.

Strong throughput rates have been achieved for the Carrapateena plant ramp-up, with a daily record of 15,022 tons milled and periods exceeding 15 days at an average rate of 12,000 tons per day above the nameplate.

Facilities for the mine and its infrastructure The underground mining project includes the construction of two block caves (lifts), a ventilation system that can deliver 1,200 m3 of air to the mine every second, access roads, the processing plant, and a 50-kilometer transmission line.

A 50-kilometer access road will lead from the Stuart Highway to the mine. A brand-new bore field will provide water for the mining, ore processing, and other site activities.

The existing Electranet 132kV line at Mount Gunson will provide the power, and a 20MW diesel-fired power generation facility will provide emergency power.

A 2,000-person accommodation village has been constructed to accommodate construction and operation workers.

AMC Mining Specialists, GR Designing, AECOM, SMEC and Golder Partners were engaged with setting up the pre-attainability investigation of the task.

The Carrapateena mining project awarded Intract Indigenous Contractors and McMahon Services a $2.9 million contract to build an exploration accommodation camp.
