A common and very heated debate. Are you “pro-cap” or “anti-cap.” The answer is, I’m both. #procap #anticap How? I believe the best place for animals as amazing and graceful as dolphins and orcas belong in the sea. But so many have been taken and brought to facilities to live that many generations have been born in captivity now. Rehab and release could happen but possibly not for the best of these animals. #captivity gives us the unique position to monitor health, behavior, and growth in a controlled environment. What we can learn in this environment can possibly tell us a lot about their wild cousins that could perhaps be used to help save them. Maybe we can use this to help save the #southernresidents that are currently starving to death. That being said, since we have taken it upon ourselves to be the caretakers for these magnificent creatures we have a duty and responsibility to ensure they receive the best care and facilities possible. Some places are adequate. And some are shameful. #freelolita I am also 100% against any further capture of dolphins or whales. We have robust breeding programs making wild caught unnecessary and cruel. #nocapture #swimfree #seashepherd #takegoodcare #ambassadorformypeople #speakforthevoiceless #stopwhaling #stopdolphinslaughter #stoptaiji (at Secret Garden & Dolphin Habitat At The Mirage) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsP4cGrn5ZA/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=xxqibykwortp

Sisters, I am sorry to share the news that J52 has died from malnutrition. The two-year-old male from the J pod was the last baby from the "baby boom" birthing season in 2014 which had given us false hope for the survival of the Southern Residents. There isn't enough salmon to keep them alive and they are going extinct even though there are hundreds of things we could do to prevent it namely breaching the Snake River Dam. Send prayers to our mer sisters with broken hearts in the Salish Sea. They have already lost so many this year J14, J28, and Granny J2. They need our help and we cannot give up. Renew your dedication to the preservation of our environment! Do not become complacent. The Orcas have told me there is always a miracle waiting to happen. Praying for that miracle now. RIP J52 https://www.whaleresearch.com/j52 #srkw #orca #salishsea #southernresidents #J52 #savethewhales (at Salish Sea)

#Repost from the Amazing @thecleanupkids @download.ins --- 💫FARMED FISH AND THE SRKW💫 Earlier today we talked about farmed fish 🐟, and how it definitely isn't a sustainable option. A perfect example of how farmed fish can hurt other species up (or down) the food chain is the relationship of fish farms on the west coast and the SOUTHERN RESIDENT KILLER WHALES!! This stunning group of Orcas is critically endangered and facing the very real threat of extinction, and that is tied DIRECTLY to salmon supply and the farmed salmon fisheries. SRKW only eat Chinook Salmon. Sadly, the health and supply of the Chinook salmon is a serious problem, and one for the reasons is that the fish farms along the coast where these orcas live and hunt are littered with farmed salmon fisheries. The conditions that the farmed fish grow in are absolutely disgusting. Many different parasites and diseases are know to be present in these farmed fish. Since they are in ocean pens, these virus' and parasites easily spread to the wild salmon populations. The effects are catastrophic. Several SRKW have died over the last several years, and sadly, starvation has likely played a major role in that. In the coming weeks we will be dedicating an ENTIRE week to the SRKW!!! But for now, we encourage you to look at the amazing account @coextinctionfilm that has documented the connection between the decreasing salmon populations and the declining health and numbers of the SRKW! The Southern Resident Killer Whales is WHAT WE STAND TO LOSE! If you are as excited to learn about the SRKW as we are to talk about them, here are a few others of our absolute favourites to give you a head start! @pnwprotectors @swimming_in_moonlight @salishseaorcas @wildorcaorg 🎥: @pnwprotectors * * * #killerwhales #cetacean #orcas #whalesareawesome #killerwhale #nofishnoblackfish #orcawhale #blackfish #chinooksalmon #savethesalmon #freethesnake #fortheriver #savesalmon #cleanwateract #wildlifetrade #orcinusorca #removedams #dontgotoseaworld #freeflowingriver #columbiarvier #majesticwildlife #opsociety #savethewhalessavetheworld #oceanconservancy #SRKW #southernresidents #southernresidentkillerwhales https://www.instagram.com/p/CWxAq0_ANuV/?utm_medium=tumblr

Praying for my Lovely Lolita. Miami has been lucky enough to miss the eye of the storm but she still has been left in a very dangerous predicament. She has no real shelter and no means to escape. The Miami Seaquarium is outdated and very much deteriorating. It will be a miracle if it it can with stand Irma. It saddens me that they didn't do anything to protect her, especially with so much time to prepare. I wish all my love to Lolita and all the other animals that were neglected in a time of need by palace entertainment. #hurricanirma #boycottcaptivity #miamiseaaquarium #prayforlolita #southernresident #palaceentertainment #orcas #miami #irma (at Miami, Florida)

Orcas of The Salish Sea
Until recently killer whales were misunderstood and feared by many. The Haida, an indigenous native American tribe of the Pacific Northwest, used the word “Sgan” for orcas, meaning supernatural and chief of the underworld. As the largest member of the dolphin family, these animals gained a reputation as stealthy, ruthless predators with row upon row of sharp formidable teeth. Somewhat unbelievably, the military used them for target practice and in the 1960s and 70s many orcas were captured for the aquarium and theme park trade.
The inland waters of British Columbia and Washington state, also known as the Salish Sea, have roughly 300 killer whales that have been organised by scientists into three communities: transients, Northern residents and Southern residents.
I get to hang out with the Southern residents, as during the summer these whales make the waters around the San Juan Islands their home. These whales have been extensively studied over the past couple of decades and researchers have put together a detailed photo-identification catalogue so that each individual can be recognized. The dialect used by Southern resident orcas to communicate is unlike the calls used by either transient or Northern resident orcas.
The Southern resident population is basically like an extended family, made up of three pods: J pod (25 members), L pod (36 members) and K pod (19 members). Although there is some overlap in the vocalisations used by all three pods, J, K and L each have their own characteristic set of calls. Because male and female offspring remain with their mothers for life, within each pod there are separate family units headed by the oldest females.  For example, J2 or Granny (estimated to be 103 years old – the oldest known killer whale in the world) is considered the matriarch leader of J pod, and is a great-great grandmother to calf J49, T’ilem Inges.
Unfortunately, as of 2014 the Southern resident orca population totaled only 80 individuals, prompting the US Government to list them as an endangered species in 2005 under the 1973 Endangered Species Act. No new calves have been recorded since 2012 and a number of threats are thought to be the cause of both long term and short stress, stalling any increase in numbers.
