yes i am 100% in the camp that people need to f/o more dark-skinned characters but lemme lay downs some other bare minimum things that yall arent really doing:

be critical of the characters youre f/oing. some of yall are getting attracted to literal walking caricatures of black people

be critical of the way said character is treated in canon. are they hypersexualized? do they often get whitewashed? are they treated as equals with the lighter-skinned members of the cast? etc

do not be Weird about them. this includes often portraying them with animalistic traits in your ship, treating them as overly flirtatious and sex-driven when they are Not Like That in canon, being weird about their culture or stuff

and im certain theres more too that just doesnt come to mind right now but yall need to be more mindful of how youre treating your darker-skinned f/os

the one brand of selfship content i really dislike is the refusal to let other people have realism in their ships. i am 100% fully aware of the fact that some of my f/os wouldnt actually like me. honestly, some probably wouldnt be able to stand me. and even the ones that would like me, i know they would dislike some of my mannerisms or habits or personality traits. and i know my f/os and i that did fall in love would have arguments and spats and sometimes we would need to change for things to fit.

but that doesnt mean i need to "kill the part of me that cringes" or whatever. its fine if not everyone wants to be starry eyed optimistic about their ships and that shouldnt be smth ur telling people they shouldnt do or are wrong for. its really not hurting anyone for someone to say that their f/o wouldnt like them irl or in source.

if yall can be completely self-indulgent so can i

black selfshipper your f/o would not judge you for being angry at the world, in fact they would sit and listen to you rant and rage about everything upsetting you.

they would take the time to listen and learn and research about your culture and the issues you face in your day-to-day life

they would stand up against people who treat you poorly or are ignorant

if you had any issues connecting with your culture they would completely understand and be there to support you all the way

and yes they may get a little protective when it comes to situations where you might not be safe for any reason, especially around unsavory types of people. theyd keep you as close as possible, and theyd make sure nothing could even possibly happen to you
