March 3, 1962 - Jacqueline Joyner-Kersee is a Black American retired track and field athlete, ranked among the all-time greatest athletes in the heptathlon as well as long jump was born in East St. Louis, IL, on this date in 1962.
She won three gold, one silver, and two bronze Olympic medals in those two events at four different Olympic Games. Sports Illustrated for Women magazine voted Joyner-Kersee the Greatest Female Athlete of All-Time.
She is on the Board of Directors for USA Track & Field (U.S.A.T.F.), the national governing body of the sport. Joyner-Kersee is an active philanthropist in children's education, racial equality and women's rights. She is a founder of the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation, which encourages young people in East St. Louis to pursue athletics and academics.
She partnered with Comcast to create the Internet Essentials program in 2011, which costs $9.95/month for low-income Americans and offers low-cost laptops and 40 hours/month of high-speed internet service. Since its inception, it has provided internet access to 4 million Americans.
Joyner-Kersee is one of the most famous athletes to have overcome severe asthma. Joyner-Kersee attended college at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she starred in both track & field and in women's basketball from 1980–1985.
She was a starter in her forward position for each of her first three seasons (1980–81, 81–82, and 82–83) as well as in her senior (fifth) year, 1984–1985. She had red-shirted during the 1983–1984 academic year to concentrate on the heptathlon for the 1984 Summer Olympics.
She won the Broderick Award as the nation's best female collegiate track and field competitor in 1983 and in 1985, and was awarded the Honda-Broderick Cup, given to the nation's best female collegiate athlete in 1985. She scored 1,167 points during her collegiate career, which places her 19th all time for the Bruins games.
The Bruins advanced to the West Regional semi-finals of the 1985 NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Tournament before losing to eventual runner-up Georgia. She was honored on February 21, 1998 as one of the 15 greatest players in UCLA women's basketball. In April 2001, Joyner-Kersee was voted the "Top Woman Collegiate Athlete of the Past 25 Years."
The vote was conducted among the 976 NCAA member schools. Since 1981, the Jesse Owens Award is given by USATF the United States' track and field "athlete of the year." In 1996, the award was split to be given to the top athlete of each gender.
In 2013, the Female award was renamed the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Award. As of October 2019, Joyner-Kersee holds the world record in heptathlon along with the top six all-time best results whilst her long jump record of 7.49 m is second on the long jump all-time list.
In addition to heptathlon and long jump, she was a world class athlete in 100 m hurdles and 200 meters being as of June 2006 in top 60 all time in those events. Sports Illustrated voted her the greatest female athlete of the 20th century.

The session addresses Trifonia Melibea Obono’s role as a writer of international projection, scholar, and as an activist of gender equality and human rights, including LGBTQIA+ rights. Speakers will each pose one question to Melibea Obono, which she will address, before opening the session to the audience for an inclusive dialogue.

LOS ANGELES – The Women’s March Foundation, the women-led organization that works towards the vision of shared humanity and equity for all, regardless of race, religion, gender identity or sexuality, has launched the “Feminist Street Initiative” to rename streets across America to reflect the names of those women who have paved the way and earned their place in history.
The initiative comes on the fifth anniversary of the Women’s March, on the cusp of Women’s History Month and in response to the pandemic, which forced marchers indoors and birthed the idea of maintaining women’s’ presence on the streets even when they could not gather.
“In a country where there are 240 million streets, 5,000 named after George Washington alone, more than three-quarters of streets named after men and very few named after women, the ‘Feminist Street Initiative’ aims to rebalance the scales and ensure that women are counted,” states a press release from the foundation. “The initiative will make visible the names and intersectional public history of art, labor and social justice organizers who have blazed a trail, broken glass ceilings and earned their mark in history.”
The initiative is also focused on uplifting women, both living and posthumously, who have contributed to community building and community formation and whose legacy is inherited beyond the cities in which they were born and aims to include Indigenous, Black and people of color women.
The first phase of the Feminist Street Initiative aims to rename streets, including:

The ‘Feminist Street Initiative’ aims to change that and make sure the women who have shaped the world we live in most get the recognition they deserve.”

History
The public gardens around the St Pancras Old Church were opened in 1877,after the churchyard was closed for burials in 1850.The gardens are made up of part of the old churchyard for the church of St Pancras,enlarged in 1800,and a separate burial ground for St Giles-in-the-Fields,added 1803.It was a preferred burial place for Catholics,with an area devoted to French émigrés.The burial ground and churchyard were partially destroyed by the development of the Midland Railway;the company formed a cutting in 1865 for the construction of the railway lines from St Pancras Station.The clearances of tombs and bodies was highly controversial and caused considerable protest;the graves were dug up at night,behind screens,a process overseen by Thomas Hardy,then an apprentice architect,and many years later recorded in a poem,‘The Levelled Churchyard’(1882).The grandest tombs survived,including the tomb to Sir John Soane(d 1837)and his wife(d 1815),but others were moved.The ground was levelled and the headstones were placed in mounds or around the walls.In 1875 the remaining land was acquired by the St Pancras Vestry for use as public space,and the gardens were opened to the public in June 1877;Baroness Burdett-Coutts laid the foundation stone of the monument she had presented,to commemorate the graves disturbed in the construction of the railway.The gardens were laid out in their present form in 1890-1 by the Vestry,in conjunction with the Midlands Railway Company. Angela Georgina Burdett, suo jure Baroness Burdett-Coutts(1814-1906)was a prominent philanthropist who is estimated to have given away between £3 and £4 million.As described by her biographer Edna Healey,in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography,Burdett-Coutts set a new standard in philanthropy:prompt and practical,her charity was given with style and without condescension.In her time she was an honoured institution and most of her enterprises bore lasting fruit.Even her visionary schemes that did not survive–Columbia market and Columbia Square–served as models for the shopping precincts and housing estates of a later era.In the breadth and sincerity of her sympathies and in the variety of her social and intellectual interests she has had no rival among philanthropists before or since.Her example not only provided an immense stimulus to charitable work among the rich and fashionable but also suggested solutions to many social problems.She was the first woman to be given a peerage,in 1871,and was thus described by Edward VII:‘after my mother the most remarkable woman in the country’.Burdett-Coutts lived with her companion and partner Hannah Brown for 52 years,after whose death,she married her protégé,William Lehman Ashmead Bartlett;it was called the ‘mad marriage’ by Queen Victoria,for Burdett-Coutts was 66,and Bartlett 29. Burdett-Coutts commissioned this memorial to commemorate a diverse group of people whose graves had been destroyed by the development of the railway.Among the names included on the memorial is that of the Chevalier d’Eon,who was a celebrated French spy and diplomat in the eighteenth century.The Chevalier lived the first part of their life as a man and the latter as a woman.Their gender was widely speculated about,and they were written about in many satires and pamphlets.D’Eon used female pronouns in later life,and signed their name as Mademoiselle d’Eon. Numerous other significant historic figures are noted on the memorial, including Sir Edward Walpole, Sir John Soane, and sculptor Thomas Flaxman, whose tomb (q.v.) stands nearby. The burial of Sidly Effendi, the Turkish Ambassador, presumably a Muslim, is quite unusual. In line with Burdett-Coutts’s humanitarian principles, a special dedication is made to the ‘memory of those whose graves are now unseen, or the record of whose names may have become obliterated’.

Amongst people commemorated is the Chevalier d'Eon (1728 – 1810) , an 18th century French spy, diplomat and freemason whose gender transition was recognised in French and English law.
For 33 years, from 1777, d'Éon dressed as a woman, claiming to have been female at birth. Doctors who examined d'Éon's body after d'Éon's death discovered that d'Éon would have actually been designated male at birth.

In the article that I picked to discuss, “How The Girl Scouts Are Paving The Way For Female Empowerment And Girls’ Leadership”, the effectiveness of the Girl Scouts organization is examined, and additionally, the support and opposition that this organization have faced are brought to light as well. The article discusses the negative views of the Girl Scouts by many Catholic figures and groups, such as an Archbishop from St. Louis names Robert Carlson who claims that the church’s values differ from the values that the Girl Scouts uphold. These values include topics on reproductive rights, gay rights, and feminism. This claim mostly stemmed from the Girl Scouts’ association with the World Association of Girl Guides, which many religious groups believe means that the Girl Scouts promote abortion and birth control to their members. Additionally, in 2015 the Girl Scouts organization announced that it was launching a campaign called #foreverygirl to show that they are inclusive of transgender girls. Girl Scouts faced opposition and anger from many people because of this campaign, yet the organization did not stand down from their stance on the topic and kept the campaign going.
Furthermore, the article includes some internal research which shows that 82% of participants credit Girl Scouts for inspiring them to be more involved in their communities, and that 90% of participants receiving financial assistance say that the Girl Scouts organization has helped them become more of a leader. Then the article goes on to claim that the “Ban Bossy campaign is a vital tool for driving change in gender norms and ensuring that an entire generation grows up knowing their assertiveness is not a negative thing, it is a key component of leadership.” That quote connects to what we are covering in this class because one of the foundations of feminism is the propelling of women into leadership and ensuring that future generations will have better opportunities, as well as changes to challenged gender norms and roles.

The Story Behind Hamish Bowles’s Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano Met Gala Look

John Galliano was always a star. When I started on my Foundation course in the early 1980s at Saint Martin’s School of Art, as it was then known, he was already a supernova of the fashion department, his exquisite drawings setting him on a sure path to becoming an illustrator. He inspired me to decide on a career in fashion rather than costume design (I had been torn), and after the Foundation course, I stayed on at Saint Martin’s to pursue just that. As John worked on his degree collection the following year, he holed up in the college library, hidden behind stacks of reference books that served a double purpose: They defined his private work space and helped to shield his jealously guarded sketches from prying eyes. As it turned out, John had taken inspiration from the Incroyables—the male and female dandies who emerged in the wake of the French Revolution with their own exaggerated versions of revolutionary style. He even burnt the edges of his drawings and dripped candle wax over them to create the illusion that they had been salvaged from an aristocrat’s ransacked mansion.
The collection was sensational—Joan Burstein, who ran Browns, London’s most fashionable boutique, bought it in its entirety. John couldn’t afford a taxi to transport it, so he wheeled it on a dress rail all the way to South Molton Street, where Mrs. B put it in her window and Barbra Streisand and Diana Ross bought pieces right out of it: They were his very first clients. John turned down a job offer to become an illustrator in New York and instead set up his eponymous brand there and then on a wing and a prayer.
I wore pieces from that first collection—waistcoats made from patches of 18th-century-style upholstery silks and sprigged cottons, jersey long johns, and vast organza shirts tying at the throat with a huge jabot. (John has re-created one of these looks to complete an ensemble built around a coat from this collection that the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s costume department has recently acquired and that is showcased in Andrew Bolton’s brilliant “Camp: Notes on Fashion” exhibition.)
The following season, John didn’t have the money to stage a fashion show, so he did a presentation instead in an old artist’s studio off the King’s Road. This collection was based on a 1920s cartoon in the satirical British weekly Punch titled Afghanistan Repudiates Western Ideals, and it explored a collision of Occidental and Afghan dress in John’s characteristically intriguing way. One of my ensembles from this collection—including a knee-length skirt that caused a sensation in Paris when I wore it to the collections that season—is now in the Boston Museum of Fine Art’s exhibition “Gender Bending Fashion.”
As soon as I heard the theme of this year’s Costume Institute show, I thought it would be the perfect moment to work again with John, who has found expression for his unquenchable creative force once more at the Maison Margiela. John had already made me a bias-cut black satin evening suit that evoked Shalom Harlow’s look from his unforgettable Fall 1994 show in Paris socialite Sao Schlumberger’s empty Louis Seize mansion.
To my great delight, John was soon on board. I sent some inspiration images of my eclectic pantheon of camp icons, including Mrs. Slocombe, the character with the Elnett-hairspray-bottle hair in ever-changing pastel hues, from the British sitcom Are You Being Served?; Quentin Crisp; Barbara Cartland; and Jazz Age aesthete Stephen Tennant. Together with John’s partner, Alexis Roche, we looked at looks from the Martin Margiela Artisanal Men’s Spring 2019 collection and isolated some silhouettes that we thought could work for me.

At Saint Martin’s, John and I shared an inspirational mutual friend in the indubitably camp form of David Harrison, who was studying in the Fine Art department, had once improbably been scouted to front a punk band to be called the Sex Pistols (Johnny Rotten got the gig), and worked a Teddy Boy look that he accessorized with white winklepicker shoes, a peroxide quiff, and a pom-pom clipped white poodle dyed shocking pink who often appeared in his artworks. John’s studio had produced a frenetic collage print that was worked not only into the clothes but the runway itself, and that incorporated an Yves Klein blue poodle in everything from jacquard to tufted embroidery. I wondered if the poodle couldn’t go pink in homage to our camp friend?
Meanwhile, John’s studio sourced a jacquard cravat in mauve from Charvet, the storied Parisian men’s outfitter, and a selection of textiles in shades of grape and wisteria. (Charvet also made the shirt, and I found some Pepto-Bismol pink cufflinks in my own closet that the sculptor Andrew Logan had made for the John Waters high-camp superstar Divine in 1987. These would be my talismans for the night.)
When I went to Paris for my first fitting, after an initial visit to take measurements, John wasn’t in town, but Raffaele Ilardo, Margiela’s inspired head fitter, and his associate Jung A. Park were there to attend to all the finer points. There was already an amazing sample of the jacquard with the electric-pink poodles, and of the ostrich trim that John had instructed be embellished with metallic lurex threads to catch the light on the red (pink) carpet. (“Invisible to the naked eye but will pop in pictures, trust me,” he said.) Ilardo apprenticed with the legendary tailor Paquito (who carved Karl Lagerfeld’s most amazing suits at Chanel Haute Couture in the ’80s and ’90s), and he had made the most beautiful toiles, with a jacket that sat perfectly on my shoulders without adjustment and had a beautifully constructed rising roll at the top of the sleeves. The cape was constructed like a Victorian visite, with openings for the arms and subtle shaping in back. It was so perfectly constructed that I could have worn the toile itself.

“I advise that cape is rehearsed up and down steps if you can,” said John after he reviewed the fittings videos from afar. “No angle must be left to chance but still must look spontaneous. Every swish must be ingrained in the subconscious, and always imagine that Avedon is following you. A sudden knock at the door works wonders for that frozen-eyes-to-the-left look. Never forget Avedon is your focal point.”
A little over two weeks later, with the clock ticking before the Gala, I returned to Paris for a final fitting with John in the house. To my amazement, the entire ensemble had now been made, including the wide-toed Mary Jane shoes, shown in patent but specially remade for me in violet satin. There were two options of subtly different lilac, for a sheer sock dotted with a point d’esprit effect that was faintly obfuscated by the crushed hairs on my legs and would definitely be showcased, as the short pants hovered only a little below the knee. John gave my lower calves a long, hard look. “You’ll wax them just before the gala,” he instructed firmly. (“Always better when viewed through sheer, tons of moisturizer 15 mins before socks are put on,” he advised nearer the day.)
“It’s unbelievable,” I said when I saw the cape arranged on a tailor’s dummy in John’s light-flooded Margiela atelier. “It’ll only become unbelievable when you start to wear it,” said John. And, sure enough, when I put on the cloak and began walking up and down the studio and it caught the air in its massy volumes, it lifted up like a cloud, and, despite the thick feather fronding, seemed almost as light as one. “La légèreté!” John proclaimed exultantly, “It looks like a canvas, like you’re coming out of a painting.” I used the Margiela staircase to rehearse maneuvering the cape up and down the pink carpet, and I tried to work it from every angle, thinking by turns of Dietrich and Dovima and Proust’s beloved Comtesse Greffulhe. (“I love that little coyness!” said John. “It’s a Dorian Gray moment!”)
I’d asked John’s longtime collaborator and my great friend Stephen Jones for thoughts on something for the head (he concocted the custom top knots for the “Camp” exhibition mannequins) and he designed a wonderful tiara bandeau made of Swarovski crystals that were custom-produced in the required lilac hue and, like those lurex fronds, would add some pink carpet dazzle. John pronounced it a “very cool touch” and suggested “surfer pink” hair to match.”
On the eve of the gala, I submitted to leg waxing and sundry other beautifications (“Lymphatic drainage on face the night before always refines,” John had counseled, and thank you, Tracie Martyn, skin alchemist). On the morn, I went to the Greenwich Hotel to be ministered to by the brilliant Teddy Charles and his assistant Satoshi Ikeda, alongside Amber Valletta, and then I hied up to the St. Regis in a white Maserati to meet John, Alexis, and Raffaele and practice some more swishing and strutting in the hotel’s ballroom under their watchful eyes. “The Japanese kids are going to go mental for it,” said John of my Savile Row meets School Boy meets Comtesse de Castiglione lewk. Stephen fitted the tiara, which perfectly framed those Teddy-tweaked waves.
“Command your space!” said John as I headed out, “Hamish, it will be a riot!” How right he was.

“Over the last 30 years, we’ve seen the rise and fading back of a lesbian feminist movement. When I came into the community of lesbians as a baby dyke in the late 1970’s, the bay area was ground zero but lesbian movement was found literally everywhere – Madison, Lincoln, Nebraska, Chapel Hill NC, Cincinnati, Tallahassee, St. Louis, all were hotbeds of lesbian feminism in the 70’s.
Today, one would be hard pressed to identify lesbian centers in this clear a way.
The lesbian cultural movement was the backbone of our community – through this network of cultural workers, we built the modern lesbian community. The network of independent women producers, the coffehouses, the feminist bookstores, the tours that Olivia Records and Redwood records and Roadwork and other independent women’s producers organized were the vehicles through which we built a self-conscious lesbian culture.
This was a separatist culture initially – in the sense that its values were grounded in a singular focus on women, not men; and that it was aggressively against patriarchy in every form and against heterosexism in every form.
And it was an explicitly political and radical culture – you did not go to the Michigan women’s music festival to get marketed to by major corporations, but to get immersed in a sense of community. You went to see and be among thousands of other lesbians of every type and to hear messages from the stage that were political and progressive and feminist – messages which all expressed the interconnectedness of lesbian issues with social justice issues. We proclaimed to each other that we were warriors against racism, we marched against the US intervention in El Salvador in the 1980’s, we led the women’s peace actions at the arms depot in Seneca and a lesbian organized the million person march on the United Nations for nuclear disarmament in 1982. We were providing support to prisoners, and organizing labor unions, we were volunteering and building the battered women’s shelter network and the rape crisis centers and the women’s self help health movement; we were fighting with each other about sex and the role of sexuality in our culture and lives, we were fighting the right wing and the homophobic left wing.
...I would argue that the explicitly radical lesbian feminist mass movement collapsed in the mid-1980’s for two reasons. Because it could not support or sustain itself financially. And because the external realities of AIDS and the fights against the Right occupied the energies of lots of lesbian political activists. It could not support itself – women did not support the independents, the rigid politics of that era alienated many other women and they did not want to support the artists, a backlash against feminism (so beautifully detailed by Susan Faludi) affected our perception of our own brand of lesbian feminism….and changes in our community institutions resulted in the co-gendering of a previously all-male political movement…this co-gendering ironically happened in the context of an epidemic that disproportionately affected gay and bisexual men, and heterosexual women.
In the 1990’s, lesbian feminism has been nearly invisible, even as lesbians have become more culturally visible. So in 1993, KD Lang was on the cover of New York Magazine, Vanity Fair and a host of other publications and we were told this was the era of lesbian chic…Chastity, Candace, Ellen, Melissa and Julie, and other prominent dykes are out or have been outed in the worlds of entertainment as never before…and today more lesbian political leaders exist in our nation than openly gay men – from the wonderful Carole Migden to Sheila Keuhl to the scores of judges and openly lesbian elected and appointed officials throughout this state; the great Tina Podlodowski in Seattle’s City Council; the wonderful black lesbian Mary Morten who works as the Mayor’s Liaison to sexual minority communities in Chicago; Maine State Treasurer Dale McCormick; NYC City Councilwoman Margarita Lopez, and State Assemblywoman Deborah Glick; Former White House Assistant to the President Ginny Apuzzo, and current Deputy Chief of Staff Karen Tramantano – are just a few examples of lesbians in positions of political power.
Ironically, all this power and visibility have come at the same time that lesbian movement and movement building have collapsed – in other words we have made progress in visibility and political power not necessarily because of a formal organized effort on the part of dykes, but despite it.
In the 1990’s the institutions that served lesbians grew only modestly in power and influence, nor were new ones formed (the Lesbian Herstory Archives, National Center for Lesbian Rights, Lesbian Community Project, in Portland, and Astraea Foundation are examples of survivors who have continued against the odds. Indeed today only a handful of lesbian specific programs and projects exist around the country – most lesbian movement is found in the grassroots organizations of ad hoc lesbians who produce the nation’s dyke marches; or form lesbian avenger chapters. Lesbians are now a diaspora. Not a Movement.
Mainstream institutions like the one I work for [NGLTF], began to be increasingly run by lesbians or straight women, but are not necessarily feminist in their program – indeed today it is controversial to argue that we should not be a single-gay-rights- issue alone movement but one that screens politicians around their support for choice, and their positions on racial justice.
And the sense among lesbians of what constitutes our movement, what forms our agenda, radically shifted in the 1990’s to the present time – where I would argue that lesbians do not know what constitutes our issues, don’t know what we ought to do with our political energies, don’t know how to support each other and not working in a strong way to build a society that respects and values and cherishes women.”

If the Trump administration and its allies continue to pursue their reckless course in Venezuela, the most likely result will be bloodshed, chaos, and instability.
The following open letter—signed by 70 scholars on Latin America, political science, and history as well as filmmakers, civil society leaders, and other experts—was issued on Thursday, January 24, 2018 in opposition to ongoing intervention by the United States in Venezuela.
The United States government must cease interfering in Venezuela’s internal politics, especially for the purpose of overthrowing the country’s government. Actions by the Trump administration and its allies in the hemisphere are almost certain to make the situation in Venezuela worse, leading to unnecessary human suffering, violence, and instability.
Venezuela’s political polarization is not new; the country has long been divided along racial and socioeconomic lines. But the polarization has deepened in recent years. This is partly due to US support for an opposition strategy aimed at removing the government of Nicolás Maduro through extra-electoral means. While the opposition has been divided on this strategy, US support has backed hardline opposition sectors in their goal of ousting the Maduro government through often violent protests, a military coup d’etat, or other avenues that sidestep the ballot box.
Under the Trump administration, aggressive rhetoric against the Venezuelan government has ratcheted up to a more extreme and threatening level, with Trump administration officials talking of “military action” and condemning Venezuela, along with Cuba and Nicaragua, as part of a “troika of tyranny.” Problems resulting from Venezuelan government policy have been worsened by US economic sanctions, illegal under the Organization of American States and the United Nations ― as well as US law and other international treaties and conventions. These sanctions have cut off the means by which the Venezuelan government could escape from its economic recession, while causing a dramatic falloffin oil production and worsening the economic crisis, and causing many people to die because they can’t get access to life-saving medicines. Meanwhile, the US and other governments continue to blame the Venezuelan government ― solely ― for the economic damage, even that caused by the US sanctions.
Now the US and its allies, including OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro and Brazil’s far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, have pushed Venezuela to the precipice. By recognizing National Assembly President Juan Guaido as the new president of Venezuela ― something illegal under the OAS Charter ― the Trump administration has sharply accelerated Venezuela’s political crisis in the hopes of dividing the Venezuelan military and further polarizing the populace, forcing them to choose sides. The obvious, and sometimes stated goal, is to force Maduro out via a coup d’etat.
The reality is that despite hyperinflation, shortages, and a deep depression, Venezuela remains a politically polarized country. The US and its allies must cease encouraging violence by pushing for violent, extralegal regime change. If the Trump administration and its allies continue to pursue their reckless course in Venezuela, the most likely result will be bloodshed, chaos, and instability. The US should have learned something from its regime change ventures in Iraq, Syria, Libya, and its long, violent history of sponsoring regime change in Latin America.
Neither side in Venezuela can simply vanquish the other. The military, for example, has at least 235,000 frontline members, and there are at least 1.6 million in militias. Many of these people will fight, not only on the basis of a belief in national sovereignty that is widely held in Latin America ― in the face of what increasingly appears to be a US-led intervention ― but also to protect themselves from likely repression if the opposition topples the government by force.
In such situations, the only solution is a negotiated settlement, as has happened in the past in Latin American countries when politically polarized societies were unable to resolve their differences through elections. There have been efforts, such as those led by the Vatican in the fall of 2016, that had potential, but they received no support from Washington and its allies who favored regime change. This strategy must change if there is to be any viable solution to the ongoing crisis in Venezuela.
For the sake of the Venezuelan people, the region, and for the principle of national sovereignty, these international actors should instead support negotiations between the Venezuelan government and its opponents that will allow the country to finally emerge from its political and economic crisis.

Considering I took a look at the perceptions of Carson Wentz and race, gender, class, and sexuality, I wanted to look at his perception in the media as a whole; who he is and what people think of him as a person and as a player. As I recently explained in my last blog, Carson Wentz was the second pick in the 2016 draft and has been a member of the NFL for the past three seasons. The reason Carson Wentz was so popular out of the draft was his stats as a college quarterback and how they compared to stats of other quarterbacks. The reason he was so comparable was because his alma mater played in the Division 1 AA league, which is unlikely for a quarterback picked so highly in the draft. Carson Wentz became a league sensation in his rookie season because he was officially the highest FCS player picked in the draft ever. Carson started his rookie year for the Philadelphia Eagles and made a statement early on. Wentz began to break rookie records for a quarterback early on as he set the rookie quarterback records for pass attempts and pass completions. “Wentz threw for a league-record 379 completions by a rookie, breaking the record of 354 held by former teammate Sam Bradford, who was with the St. Louis Rams at the time. His 379 completions also set a single season franchise record, breaking the record of 346 also held by Bradford from the previous season. Wentz also set a single season franchise record with 607 pass attempts, the second highest attempts by a rookie in league history (Andrew Luck had 627 in the 2012 season).”
           Carson Wentz’s image soon began to sky rocket after his successful rookie season, and people started to look forward to the upcoming Philadelphia Eagles season. Over the course of a couple months the Eagles quarterback became a sensation in the eyes of Philly fans and soon began protecting him as his view in society changed forever. Wentzylvania is a play on words inspired by "Pennsylvania" and Carson "Wentz" of the Philadelphia Eagles. The phrase originated as a nickname for the fanbase of the team and of the Quarterback after his first season in 2016. As majority of people know, the Philly sport fanbase is top tier in craziness, loyalty, and love for the team and players; so creating a tag name for the Eagles quarterback and the state in which he plays in means he is here to stay. The following season after his rookie year was miraculous. As the Eagles looked to gain some playoff hopes, the second year quarterback began the start of something amazing. Carson Wentz led the league in touchdown passes headed into week 12 with 33 as he continued his MVP type season. Wentz led the rush for MVP during the regular season while he recorded an 11-2 record which led the NFL. After week 14, the Eagles community received some heartbreaking news as the newest star of the city tears his ACL.
           Carson Wentz never left the eyes of Eagles fans as many continued to hope for a historic Super Bowl run with backup quarterback Nick Foles. Wentz’s perception as a player in the NFL became severely positive as he continued his journey to help lead his team even though he was only on the sidelines. It was really difficult for him, but the second year quarterback became a league favorite as his work ethic was provided for everyone to see. From Hot97, a Philadelphia radio station, “As the Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback, Wentz has made a name for himself both on and off the field as a leader. He was showing up to the team facility early on a daily basis and staying as late as anyone in preparation for each week. If you think that any of that's changed since his season-ending knee injury in Week 14, think again.” With this, Carson’s perception in society became even more positive. Even though Wentz had a historic year as the Eagles quarterback, the job was no complete and the Eagles as a team had a tremendous shot at becoming a Super Bowl caliber team. With backup quarterback Nick Foles now becoming the starter, Wentz did what he needed to as far as getting Foles prepared the way Wentz was all season.
           The Philadelphia Eagles ended up winning the 52nd Super Bowl as they defeated Tom Brady and the New England Patriots with a backup quarterback. This is where the perception of Carson Wentz changed forever, as Philadelphia Eagles fans knew they found their guy till retirement. His work ethic and love for his team, teammates, and fans is what gives the Philadelphia Eagles community hope for the future. Wentz is truly loved. Not only is he noticed in society as an NFL quarterback for a Super Bowl winning team but he gives back so much to the community of Philadelphia and his own foundation known as the AO1 foundation. I’ve explained the AO1 foundation in a previous blog but something that changed the perception of Wentz was a Sports Center insider where Wentz decided to make a little boy’s dream come true. Lukas Kusters visited the Eagles facility to spend the day with his favorite quarterback, Carson Wentz. Lukas struggled with stomach cancer and his dying wish was to meet Carson Wentz, but Carson made it something more special. He invited Lukas to a practice and gave him tickets and sideline passes to the next home game along with making a promise to Lukas. Carson Wentz promised him that he will wear the “Dutch Destroyer / Live Like Lukas” wrist band forever, including games and practices. I personally have a Live Like Lukas bracelet and respect Carson Wentz for making Lukas’ dream come true. Here is where the Eagles fan base began to draw love for their quarterback as he was officially shown to the public eye as an amazing guy with an amazing talent.

Carey Young- Artist 
Carey Young developed her artistic practice from a cross-fertilization of disciplines including law, business, politics and science. The tools and language of these different fields act as material for her installations, performances, text works and photographs, as well as for videos in which absurd relationships develop between the performer or subjects, and the rhetoric of political, commercial or legal discourse. Recently, she has explored relations between law, gender and the cinematic, most notably with the video installation Palais de Justice (2017), in which the artist surreptitiously filmed female judges working at the main courthouse of Belgium.
Young’s work has been exhibited widely, including solo shows at Kunsthal Aarhus, Aarhus, Denmark (2020), La Loge, Brussels (2019), Towner Art Gallery (2019), Dallas Museum of Art (2017), Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich (2013), The Power Plant, Toronto (2009), Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (2009), Eastside Projects (Birmingham, 2009), MiMA (Middlesbrough, 2010), John Hansard Gallery (Southampton, 2001) and group shows at Kanal Centre Pompidou, Brussels (2018), Aspen Art Museum (2016), Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2015), Tate Liverpool (2014-15), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2012), New Museum, New York (2011), Tate Britain (2009–10), ICA (London, 2003), The Photographers’ Gallery (London, 1999) amongst many others. She has participated in numerous biennials, including Moscow (2013, 2007), Taipei (2010), Sharjah (2005), and Venice (2003). In 2023, Young will have a solo show at Modern Art Oxford.
Works in public collections include Tate Gallery, Centre Pompidou, Sharjah Art Foundation, Arts Council Collection and Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst. Two monographs on her work have been published: Subject to Contract, published by JRP | Ringier in 2013, and Carey Young: Incorporated, published by Film and Video Umbrella and John Hansard Gallery, 2001. Young is represented by Paula Cooper Gallery, New York.
Carey Young has had an Honorary Fellowship in the School of Law, Birkbeck, the University of London since 2013 and has given lectures at Harvard University, Princeton University, the University of Cambridge and Oxford University. She is an Associate Professor in Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London.

New leaders may want to let trust build over time, rather than establishing lots of it right away, according to a new study with military cadets.
Numerous studies have shown that trust in leadership is linked to higher individual and team performance. However, that might not be the best strategy for long-term success, according to the researchers.
That’s because trust is dynamic by nature, and it is particularly susceptible to change early in the leader’s tenure with a team when the leader is under greater scrutiny.
The researchers found that employees’ initial expectations for a new leader were an indicator of how trust levels would change over time. The higher the initial level of follower expectations, the greater the potential to experience a decline.
However, leaders who started with low or moderate levels of initial trust were more likely to experience a steep increase in trust over time, particularly when engaging in particular behaviors. That’s important because leaders who experienced increases in trust were, in turn, consistently rated more effective by their supervisors.
“Our findings depart from conventional wisdom, which seeks to maximize the level of trust in the leader from day one,” says Kurt Dirks, vice chancellor for international affairs and professor of leadership at Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis.
“Although having a high level of employee trust in a leader is associated with effectiveness, we found that it is even more effective to start at a moderate level of trust and increase to a high level over the first several months. This approach allows leaders to build a sustainable foundation of trust and create a sense of positive momentum.”
How leaders can build trust
While previous studies have looked at the relationship between team performance and trust in leadership at a particular point in time, Dirk’s research is the first to show how changes in trust over time affect leader and team performance from the start of a relationship. The findings appear in the Journal of Business Ethics.
The study also reveals a set of behaviors that were particularly effective at accelerating the development of trust. Leaders that engaged in behaviors referred to as transformational leadership, an ethics-based leadership style, experienced faster rates of trust development. Key to this approach were the focus on values and on taking time to develop the relationship with individuals.
The study took place at the United States Military Academy. Dirks and team surveyed cadets who attended the academy to simultaneously earn college degrees and gain officer commissions in the US Army upon graduation.
To assess how trust developed and changed over time, the researchers collected data four times from more than 500 individuals organized into 130 squads, beginning during the first week of the program and continuing approximately every five weeks. Squad members reported their trust in their direct leader. Additionally, leadership one level above the unit leader responded about unit effectiveness.
Even before the new leader joins the team, companies frequently create high expectations by touting the person’s credentials and high goals. Employees also use social connections, situational contexts and personal attributes—such as age, race, gender, body language, or presence—to measure up the new leader, Dirks says.
“Some leaders are able to establish a high level of trust immediately, while other leaders—particularly minorities—may start with low levels of trust and need to build trust over time,” he says.
However, the research shows there could be advantages to earning employees’ trust rather than starting off with it.
In the study group, leaders one standard deviation above the mean on expectations experienced a decline in followers’ trust over time, while those leaders one standard deviation below the mean experienced an increase in trust.
“Our analysis suggests that this is not just a regression to the mean phenomenon but rather is based on psychological factors,” Dirks says.
Transformational leaders
Another consistent pattern emerged from the data: Transformational leaders were more trusted by their employees by the end of the study. According to Dirks, transformational leaders are those who exemplify moral standards and foster an ethical work environment. They also encourage development of their employees and emphasize cooperation and open communication, he says.
Leaders who began with low expectations were able to quickly overcome the initial trust deficit if they displayed high levels of transformational leadership, Dirks says. And leaders who began with high expectations were able to maintain a high level of trust with subordinates if they displayed high levels of transformational leadership.
By comparison, leaders who began with high expectations experienced a sharp negative rate of change in their followers’ trust if they displayed low levels of transformational leadership.
“This study suggests that leaders may establish trust most quickly by managing expectations for how they will be an effective leader, and subsequently engaging in a particular set of behaviors that earn trust,” Dirks says.
