thinking about how lack of personal grooming in his hair & clothes is Bucky's misery language and immaculate personal grooming is Steve's 🥺

originally in tags but it got interesting so: 

Personal grooming as just another variety of self-discipline.

and Steve's got that Catholic boy guilt where discipline = punishment

so being immaculately neat while he's suffering = self punishment / self-flagellation / kicking himself when he's already down etc.

whereas Bucky's got that good Jewish boy thing of personal grooming = cleansing and getting yourself ready for a good thing

(just like cleaning the house)

so when he’s down and out and expecting everything to be shit in his future = fuck personal grooming

and probably both see dressing neat as a form of manners because of going to church/temple

so Steve clings to manners when he's down whereas Bucky cannot be fucked

also the class aspect: 

po boy Steve seeing scruffiness as a sign of financial security

since not having to look Respectable to eat is a privilege

whereas breadwinner Bucky is like 'got the money from my new job and I'm gunna Dress!!' as a sign of security

maybe also tried to look richer as part of the hustle while he was out there making bread to keep his boy healthy

if you ever see Steve looking immaculately neat AND doodling his surroundings? = VERY SAD BOY ALERT.
