behold! i didn't see any otgw icebergs, so i made my own :)
if you think i should add something, lmk!!
Explanations under cut :)
First layer:
▪︎Beast!Wirt au - very popular au in which Wirt stays in the Unknown, possessed by the Beast to some extent.
▪︎Bad End Friends - Crossover AU of Beast!Wirt teaming up with Ice Finn from Adventure Time and Bipper from Gravity Falls; sometimes other 'bad end' au characters are thrown in such as a glitched Gumball from TAWOG
▪︎Irl Copies of the For Sara tape - Limited copies of the For Sara tape were sold at two points. They have yet to sell for a third time. (🤞🤞🤞)
▪︎Tome of the Unknown (pilot) - The Pilot of the series. Can be watched on YouTube.
▪︎Wirt Staying in the Unknown - In a scrapped ending, Wirt was to stay in the Unknown, saying that facing your real problems was scarier than staying there.
▪︎Mystery Kids - Crossover AU with other child-late teens aged characters from sources based on mysterious and supernatural themes such as Gravity Falls and Psychonauts.
▪︎Quincy Endicott's grave - Quincy's grave can be seen in the graveyard that Sara and the others are hanging out in.
▪︎Original Beatrice Voice Actress - Beatrice had a different VA in the pilot, Natasha Leggero. Melanie Lynskey voices her in the actual series.
▪︎The Woodsman's Daughter is Named Anna - The comics have several issues focused on his daughter, in which her name is revealed to be Anna.
▪︎Jason Funderburker's Ax Murderer Story - At the gathering in the graveyard, Funderburker is telling a story about a man with an ax; this story is believed to have influenced the existence of the Woodsman.
▪︎Full Versions of Songs in the OST - A handful of the songs are cut down for their appearances in the series and can only be heard in full on the OST. The most notable example is Old Black Train , which is actually 2 minutes and 15 seconds long, but is only in the series for about 15-20 seconds.
Second Layer:
▪︎Sara is named after the Fleetwood Mac song - Listen to it here :) it is notable that it includes lyrics about "drowning in a sea of love" and that Sara is "the poet of [the singer's] heart."
▪︎OTGW Reanimated - a reanimated project for the first episode. Got taken off of YouTube, but can be viewed on Dailymotion.
▪︎Baby Wirt Audio - In the For Sara cassette, there is a small section of audio that can be heard in about the middle of the recording of Wirt's father talking to him as a baby.
▪︎Funderburker/Funderberker - The two Jasons's surnames are spelled slightly differently to avoid confusion.
▪︎The Brothers Never Ate or Needed to Rest - Although Greg expressed being hungry, neither of the boys actually ate anything (outside of one spoonful of bland potatoes and inedible items such as dirt and leaves) and never laid down to rest, only sleeping when night came.
▪︎Book on Interior Design in Wirt's Room - In Wirt's from, a book on interior design can be seen laying on the floor, backing up the knowledge he displayed when analyzing the interconnected mansions.
▪︎Mad Love was Based on a Dream - The plot of Mad Love came from a dream that Pat McHale had about house hunting. In the dream, while exploring one of the houses being shown, he ended up wandering into someone else's home.
▪︎Beatriceoftheday - A blog dedicated to our lord and savior Beatrice, known for its strange shitposts and intense praise of the titular bird girl.
▪︎Wirt is Jealous of Greg's Popularity - Shown in the Circus Friends issue of the comics, Wirt is jealous of Greg's ability to make everyone laugh and have fun. This may factor into his dislike of his brother.
▪︎Greg was Feeding Fred at the Tavern - At first watching, one may be confused as to where all the food Greg was gathering went, why Fred was wearing lipstick and why he was refusing to talk to Beatrice. Shown in a deleted scene, this all explained, as Fred tells Beatrice that he didn't talk to her because Greg was feeding him.
▪︎Elijah Wood Voiced the Crazy Driver - Exactly what is says on the tin, the nutty driver was voiced by Wood.
▪︎Cloud City is Heaven - A popular theory that Cloud City actually represents Heaven.
▪︎Greg is Greg Universe - A headcanon/theory that has mostly died out that Greg is the same Greg in Steven Universe.
▪︎Bee Beatrice - Beatrice was originally cursed to become a bee, but was changed into a bluebird to match better with the seasonal autumn theme.
▪︎Pat McHale Voiced Wirt's Voice Crack - Wirt's voice crack when asking the Beast Are You? was actually done by McHale, not Wood.
▪︎The Other Actors Harassing Elijah Wood When Singing Wirt's Song - In order to make the performance as awkward as possible, the other actors were asked to yell and demand Wirt to sing. This can be heard in the episode.
▪︎Come Wayward Souls Has the Same Melody as O Holy Night - The song shares a cadence with "O Holy Night", and can be sung to its tune.
▪︎Black Turtles Origin/Purpose - No one knows why the black turtles exist, and McHale has said that they're just one of the unexplainable things of the Unknown.
▪︎Anna Never Left the House - In the aforementioned comics, it is shown that Anna had never left the house, living on her own until the Woodsman's return.
▪︎Sailor Suit Greg - Greg originally wore a sailor suit, but was changed later on to his current, Johnny Appleseed inspired outfit .
▪︎Beatrice Missing Being Able to Flip People Off - In the Art Book, Beatrice's introduction states that one of the reasons she hates being a bird is because she no longer has hands to flip people off with.
Third Layer
▪︎Jason Funderberker is Visually Based on a Teen Pat McHale - As seen here, Funderberker was designed after McHale.
▪︎Babes in the Wood is Based on an Old Alice in Wonderland Cartoon - You can view the original 1923 cartoon here! Starts at 4:25.
▪︎Wirt and Sara are Dipper and Mabel's Parents - A popular AU/hc where Dipper and Mabel of Gravity Falls are the future kids of Wirt and Sara.
▪︎The Tune of Wirt's Song is Improvised - In addition to the aforementioned harassment, in a further attempt to make the performance as awkward as possible, Elijah Wood was not given a tune to sing, only the lyrics.
▪︎Wirt's Costume Origin - As said in the art book and on his tumblr, Wirt's cone and cape come from an attempted rock and roll persona from McHale's teen years.
▪︎Greg is Based on Pat McHale's Son - It has been claimed that Greg is based on McHale's son, but Greg existed before him. The similarities are simply coincidental.
▪︎Old Scratch - The original name of the Beast.
▪︎The Beast Killed the Woodsman's Wife - Shown in the comics, The Woodsman's wife was mortally injured, with her attacker implied to be the Beast.
▪︎Wirt and Greg Staying in the Unknown Until Christmas - Another scrapped ending, in which the brothers stay in The Unknown until Christmas, with their absence unexplained.
▪︎Tome of the Unknown (original plot) - Early concepts had the Beast ( then known as Old Scratch as mentioned earlier ) scattering the pages of the titular book for the brothers to collect. Each page would come to life and the brothers would explore each story.
▪︎Dante's Inferno Comparisons - Check out these videos for full analysis!
▪︎Wirt Panty Shots - In the aforementioned Circus Friend comics, Wirt dons a dress as part of a disguise. Later on, he rips off the bottom half off, revealing that he is wearing bloomers.
▪︎The Beast's True Form was Inspired by Trypophobia - As stated in the art book, The Beast's hole-filled appearance was inspired by Trypophobia, the fear of many small holes.
▪︎The Fight is Over is About Drowning - Give the lyrics another read.
▪︎The Beast Last Minute Design Change - The Beast had a very different design, and it was changed into the current one at the last minute.
▪︎Gnome in Cloud City Representing Wirt - Many people believed that the Gnome with the lantern in cloud city was a parallel to Wirt, or a glimpse into his future. However, this was debunked.
▪︎Send Me a Peach - This song is included in the ost, but isn't in the actual series.
▪︎Fred and the Highwayman's Backstory - The comics expand upon the story of Fred the Horse and his involvement with the Highwayman.
Fourth Layer
▪︎Babes in the Wood Title Origin - The name of this episode comes from an old story of a pair of children getting lost in the woods, dying, and being buried in leaves by robins.
▪︎poorlydrawnotgw - This was a blog created during the poorly drawn series meme period. It consisted of poorly drawn and very strange shitposts and has since been deactivated. I was a part of it as mod Goopy Wirt and only have a handful of images saved from it.
▪︎Read and Listen Book Lost Audio - A read and listen book was created, with the book being read by Greg's Frog, who would stop every now and again to talk about being a frog. The pages can be found online, but the audio is currently lost.
▪︎Skinless Witch - A scrapped episode concept involved a skinless witch that kidnapped Greg and rode him like a horse.
▪︎Gentleman Burglar Wirt - A scrapped concept in which Wirt breaks into a woman's home, who is charmed by this young man who has come to visit her.
▪︎Animal Transformation - It was originally planned for Wirt and Greg to be turned into a bear/dog and a duck and remain that way for several episodes. This was later used in the comics.
▪︎The Unknown is influenced by Wirt's mind/interests - The Unknown is influenced by those who walk in it, in this case, Wirt. This includes the old timey mystical nature of it, as Wirt has been stated to have an interest in old folk tales.
▪︎Good Guy Beast/Black Train Scrapped Concept - In an earlier draft, the brothers were on a train, heading to what they assumed was death. They jump off, ending up in the Unknown. The Beast tries to get them back on the train, which turns out to be heading back to life.
▪︎Evil Woodsman - At one point, the Woodsman was intended to be under the influence of the Beast and tried to sabotage the brothers's attempts to return home.
▪︎Lorna Reading the Tome of the Unknown in the Epilogue - In the epilogue, Lorna can be seen reading the titular book from the aforementioned scrapped plot.
▪︎The Beast was Originally the Devil Himself - The Beast was first designed as a devil-like character, the aforementioned Old Scratch.
▪︎The Brothers Never Went Home/The Hospital is Part of The Unknown - a theory based on the fact that the edges of the screen are still blurred at the end of chapter 10, the rushed narration, and the lack of consequences of nearly drowning.
▪︎Beatrice Seeing Wirt Nude - In one of the comics, Beatrice accidentally sees Wirt while he is washing his clothes in the river.
▪︎Sara is a Descendant of Lorna - A theory that Sara is a distant relative of Lorna.
▪︎Exists in the Same Universe as Clarence and Home Movies - The most well known piece of evidence is the overhead shot of the town matching the town that Clarence is set in. Wirt and Greg also have a cameo in another episode, and one of the final episodes shows Brendon Small of Home Movies runs a movie rental store in the town, connecting all three series together.
Final Layer
▪︎Beast x Wirt - Also known as Poetree.
▪︎Candycone - Greg x Wirt.

Hello everybody! Unfortunately the project has been canceled. However, the heads of the writing team have decided to release what we WANTED to do for DP: Reanimated.
For a general summary, we had a plan for 5 seasons with each season being 14 episodes and being about 12-22 minutes long each. By this point, our pilot had been done for several months, we knew what we wanted to happen in every episode this season, we had full outlines for half the episodes, and episode 1 was about halfway through scripting. We’ll go into details about how exactly the show would have played out in another post.
Instead, we have for you today the titles and “summaries” of every episode in season 1. These “summaries” were more... jokey than anything. Think those uninformative, jokey Steven Universe summaries. The titles, though, were 100% what we wanted to release.
So, without further ado, as a intro of things to come, here’s the titles and summaries for every episode in season 1!
------------------
1) Title: Fear Himself Summary: The trio spends some time at the park.
2) Title: Bottle Buddies Summary: Danny gets to know his classmates a bit better.
3) Title: Inside the Box Summary: Danny spends some time with his parents.
4) Title: Mall Rats Summary: The Fenton family supports local businesses.
5) Title: Fairest of the Halls Summary: Sam reflects.
6) Title: Critical Conditioning Summary: Danny learns about the power of multitasking.
7) Title: Play the Piper Summary: The park is alive with the sound of music.
8) Title: High Rise Summary: Danny moves up the food chain.
9) Title: The Ultimate Test Summary: Danny tries to raise his grades.
10) Title: Divide and Conquer Summary: The trio takes some sides at the Nasty Burger.
11) Title: Overshadowed, Overwhelmed Summary: One of the trio is hiding something.
12) Title: Then Fall, Phantom! Summary: Maddie and Jack come to a realization about ghosts.
13) Title: Sunshine of a Rewound Time Summary: Danny tries again.
14) Title: What Goes Up? Summary: Danny demands some answers.

Steven Selects: Episode 8 Recap
Steven Universe podcast “Steven Selects: Episode 8: Off Colors,” hosted by McKenzie Atwood, is the eighth of an eight-part series of spotlights on fan favorite episodes. The guests are Matt Burnett, Ben Levin, Ian Jones-Quartey, and Rebecca Sugar. The official description:
"Off Colors" is the Steven Universe episode that introduced fan-favorite Padparadscha, provided a more detailed look at Homeworld, and focused on Steven and Lars' relationship! And those are just a few of the things that writers Ben Levin and Matt Burnett discuss in this episode of the pod! Steven Universe Creator Rebecca Sugar also returns to answer some fan Q&A including a question about Lars' character development and initial ideas! Plus, former Steven Universe Executive Producer, Ian Jones-Quartey, tackles a few questions involving the "Rule Of Cool" and fun facts about Opal!
Tumblr media
Outline:
McKenzie opens as usual with a question about how the episode changed from conception to completion. The first point they discussed was how they decided when the episode would end (before going into “Lars’ Head”). Since you have a significant character death and revival, you have to figure out where to place that in a storyline for the most satisfying storytelling. Sad cliffhangers are difficult, so they decided he needed to be resurrected before the end.
Another big point was that originally there were two more Off Colors! Their names were Flint and Chert, and they were Quartzes who'd had a moral objection to fighting. Then they decided that might just be too many characters, and also the Off Colors were supposed to have been rejected by Homeworld for who they were, not what they believed. So they decided to scrap the idea of these extra Quartzes.
McKenzie asks if, while coming up with the group as a group all at the same time, how is that different from coming up with individual characters? Matt and Ben discuss how they intended to show a snapshot of the kinds of Gems who get rejected from Homeworld, with the Rutile Twins coming out wrong, Rhodonite being a cross-class Fusion, Fluorite being a polyamorous Fusion, and Padparadscha functions differently--they're all not normal by Homeworld's standards.
Tumblr media
Next, they discuss Padparadscha and how she became an instant fan favorite--how do they make her one joke so adorable throughout even though it's sort of repetitive? The writers say they had to make them memorable, so each had to have a special way of talking that distinguished them. The Rutiles rephrase what each other said, Fluorite is "consulting with many different Gems" so she speaks very slowly, Rhodonite is like a "reverse Garnet" so the Pearl side is always showing her freakouts, and then Padparadscha has future speech for things that already happened. People love her because she's so earnest and trying to help, she thinks her friends don't know the information she's offering and she just wants to be useful.
Tumblr media
Regarding being on Homeworld, the writers said they haven't shown much of the world by this point but you do get that glimpse of the skyline as they break out of the trial room and then you get to see the core of the planet all eroded from the Kindergartens. Initially they had this idea that the palanquin would land in a populated area and the drones that came after them would poof some bystanders! But Matt says they wanted to focus on what really matters about the episode. The street level of Homeworld is like the lowest of the low, and having it so empty helps make it scary and hopeless. They're holding onto showing off populated areas of Homeworld for . . . another time.
Tumblr media
McKenzie asks about tackling the Lars arc. They've had plans to kill Lars for a long time, but they thought it would happen earlier and less significantly--maybe even as early as when Steven first learns about his healing powers in the first place. They felt like waiting longer helped them "earn" a big significant character change for Lars. There's also the question of whether Steven always had the healing tears, but it's a little unclear; he wasn't able to heal Amethyst with his tears, but later he cried on Lars (without intent) and it brought him back to life. The differences of course were that Steven's powers have evolved since then, and also that this was the first time he's tried it on someone who needed to be reanimated. It's nice for Steven to have grown in his abilities so you didn't go into, like, episode 2 thinking Steven can bring people back from the dead.
Tumblr media
McKenzie also brings up what might happen if Lars went in Lion's mane. They have no idea what would happen. They joke that if he went into Lion and came out his own head, it'd be like Inception, and he'd just have to continuously crawl out of levels of himself until he came out of Lion again.
Fan Questions (answered by Ian Jones-Quartey):
Question: How do you think TV animation is changing, or how did it change over the course of your time on SU?
Answer: Ian says TV animation hasn't changed too much. Cartoon Network is basically built on top of Hanna Barbera, and they pitch shows and episodes the same way they did. There's been a trend toward more creator-driven shows, but that's been going on since the 1990s. But because things can be more specific these days, they can do deeper stories sometimes, but the process is about the same. There's also the multi-platform thing, but the stuff Ian liked as a kid had toy lines and video games too. The characters and stories are new, and the process is similar.
Question: How do you find a decent balance between keeping fusion special and giving fans what they love to see? (In general, how do you balance timing reveals?)
Answer: Ian says they had so many ideas, but at the end of the day they'd decide what's the COOLEST way to unveil an idea. They aren't necessarily going for surprising--they just want it to feel good.
Question: Any fun facts about Opal?
Answer: Most of the facts about Opal are known. But she's based on two people with different personalities when they feel like they're on the same wavelength. Opal is designed to be temporary. Because she's made only for a specific use at a specific time, between two Gems who only get along sometimes, she would focus on a singular task. Opal is a little forgetful or distracted.
Tumblr media
Question: When a character is introduced, how do you set them up in their first few episodes?
Answer: Every character needs their main gimmick that they're all about. You have to find what animates them to do that. Where do they get that from? For instance, Onion is kinda creepy, he does weird stuff, and then it's because his dad is gone all the time so he's always getting in trouble and doing weird things because no one tells him no. In later episodes, they'd lean on that idea whenever they have Onion around. As long as you as the creator know it, there'll be an internal consistency to the character.
Question: On Stewood Plaven Turbiverse?
Answer: Rebecca and Ian came up with the idea of a crossover episode between Steven Universe and Lakewood Plaza Turbo (the original title of OK KO), as a fun dream from when they were both coming up with their shows' pilots. Instead of a crossover exactly, they thought they would blend the shows together, resulting in K-Ven, Penid, Radethyst and Mr. Garnet. They'd go on an adventure. An idea like that, says Ian, is impossible--the best thing about crossovers is that you can reuse stuff, while a blending would be impractical. Never say never, but there'd be a lot of labor.
Fan Questions (answered by Rebecca Sugar):
Question: What is the process for coming up with plot devices and characters that will forward the development of challenging characters specifically?
Answer: The plot and the characters are not entirely separate--plots evolve from who the characters are and why they need each other, so it's all interconnected as to what ends up challenging them. For instance, the way that Pearl idolizes Garnet helps them function as a team but also is a problem for her as a character, and the reason she's like that is associated with her past. Amethyst is always covering up insecurities, etc. Once you understand who they are, you know why they are pulled together or apart--it always comes from the CHARACTERS.
Question: What are your favorite tropes?
Answer: Rebecca loves silly old cartoon tropes. One-dimensional, wacky tropes. She loves the idea of adding realism and complexity to these silly old clichés. Rebecca always wanted to make something completely original, but Ian encouraged her to use the groundwork that already exists that people will recognize, and build on those, since people already recognize them and you can do so much with them. She just likes classic, corny things.
Tumblr media
Question: Was Lars's character arc always planned or more recent?
Answer: Steven resurrecting Lars was one of the oldest ideas in the show--always planned. Rebecca's first ten episode outlines originally included an arc for Lars that's similar to what eventually happened with him. Steven and Lars have always been counters; Lars can't accept help and Steven wants to help everyone; Lars is always putting on a façade and Steven can't do that to save his life. So they're always bouncing off each other in interesting ways. And of course, as mentioned in other places, Lars was an even older character from Rebecca's college comics; his relationship with Sadie was based on Rebecca and people she knew, kind of an amalgam, and the characters were also college students at the time. She wanted a mundane comic strip where very everyday stuff happens--she mentions having one about Sadie just sitting down and eating boxed mac and cheese, with no punch line. Very much about a college experience. Rebecca brought Lars and Sadie in from those comics because they represented the "real world," and that was part of the SU concept--the magical meeting the mundane. So she borrowed her own characters for that.
"Steven Selects" is now over, but new special episodes of the podcast start on December 19th, 2017.

“It’s Over Isn’t It” Reanimation progress
Honestly one of my favourite parts about animating is posting the WIPs online. Here’s the step-by-step of how I went about doing my reanimation for the end section of “It’s Over Isn’t It” from the Steven Universe episode Mr. Greg.
1) Idea and Prep
Tumblr media
I was flicking through Steven Universe: Art & Origins. I think at the time I must’ve been between jobs or bored or something, because it came into my head to do a bit of animation based on the pilot style SU. I’ve always been quite fond of the pilot style, especially Pearl’s David Bowie / LaRoux look. The little tux design by Hellen Jo was quite snazzy as well, so I decided to have a go at doing a segment of “It’s Over Isn’t It”, using these designs.
I traced the turnaround from the book in Clip Studio Paint and approximated Jo’s design to it. At first I had the colour turnaround, but did the low-colour turnaround with the heads to give me a better idea of where the lines are and proportions of the body. I also get a clip of “It’s Over Isn’t It” and trim it down to the section I want to do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a long one so strap in.
2) Sketch Pass
I’ll be using gifs that show the first 100-130 frames of the animation, because the full segment is 22 seconds long.
Tumblr media
Very very loose animation of what I’m going to be doing with this segment, done in Adobe Animate. I have a video of the real segment in the corner of the stage and audio in the timeline, and closely reference them for layout and acting.
I’ve decided I want to go really nuts with the animation. Lots of angles on her face, smooth movement, secondary animation / follow-through on her various clothing elements. Technically her earring’s supposed to be on the other side but I want to animate that flailing around dangit, so I change it so it faces the camera.
3) Rough Pass
Tumblr media
I tidy up the rough I did somewhat. It’s still very rough, but Pearl is better proportioned and the motion is more complete. I get a better idea of how she moves by focusing on drawing keys (the most important drawings) and breakdowns (drawings that help you figure out the motion a little bit, without full animation). I have Pearl, her suit, ruffles and earring on separate layers so I can turn things on and off or lower their opacity as needed.
4) Tiedowns
Tumblr media
At some point between the rough and tie-down phase I realized that I’d been animating at 30fps instead of 25fps like I’d meant to, so I had to end up shifting all the roughs I’d been doing. Bad news: having to wrestle with getting the timings I’d so carefully planned out in the rough to still look good. Good news: I have to animate and clean up 5 fewer frames per second, so that’s 110 fewer drawings to worry about. Yussssss. For reference, the above clip has now gone from 132 frames to 107.
During the tiedown phase, I go over the roughs and more carefully try to match the proportions in the turnaround. I keep a flattened version of the first frame of animation to use as reference thoughout to prevent morphing. Sometimes when you’re animating, things will get bigger or small as you re-draw them, so it’s good to have a base drawing to refer back to and make the sizes stay consistent.
At this point I’m way more aware of reasons behind the big design change for Pearl between the pilot and the show. She’s so dang skinny and tall with that extra poof of hair up top that she’s really annoying to frame up. If you want to keep all of her in the frame, there’s going to be tons of empty space.
I also find that my turnaround isn’t enough reference for Pearl’s awkwardly-shaped head. I snap me a bunch of screenshots of pearl’s head from different angles and collate them into a big sheet.
Tumblr media
5) Inbetweening
Tumblr media
Inbetweening, aka filling out all the gaps in the timeline between the keys and breakdowns. If you’ve done your keys and BD’s well, inbetweening can be a pretty straight-forward.
But I’ve got like a million bits of secondary animation to content with, which means this still takes a significant amount of time. The hair and ruffles have to move a little later than the rest of the body, and some parts of the ruffles have to move at a different rate from the rest. I’m trying to animate like there’s wind since Pearl’s on top of a tall building. I keep animating until it feels good enough.
Tumblr media
This is what my timeline and stage look like in Animate by this point. The animation is mostly on 2s, with some 1s, 3s and 4s thrown in when needed.
6) Cleanup and Colour
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did the cleanup in Toon Boom Harmony. As a program, I like it was more than Animate, even though it isn’t without it’s flaws. But it’s also really dang expensive. Fortunately, by this point I’d been working on the upcoming Deadendia series for Netflix. What with the pandemic, we were working from home and the studio gave me a license for Toon Boom. So I exported my frames from Animate, put ‘em in TB and started cleaning up.
I’ve found that cleanup is something that’s often offloaded to new or less experienced artists at studios because blah it’s just tracing the rough animation. But you’ve got good cleanup and bad cleanup, and a good cleanup artist will compensate for flaws in volume and have a good, clear and natural line.
I’m not terribly fond of doing cleanup myself. I feel I tend to end up rushing, which leads to sloppy work. I tried really hard to keep up a standard here.
7) Comping
Tumblr media
a.k.a. Compositing, the final layering of the various elements before exporting a film. Another stage I don’t quite care for because of its nuances. Also drawing backgrounds.
I admit that I’m not very good at drawing backgrounds or environments. I tried to do the one for the second shot of this animation, since it was acutally really important. In shots 1 and 3, you don’t really see the ground or even the railing that Pearl is leaning on, but 2 is a wide shot. My first attempts at it were unfortunate. Fortunately my husband @joe-sparrow is both good at backgrounds and good at imitating the style and colour palette of the show. He volunteered to do the BGs and I accepted. See mine vs. his:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yeah, get me some nice backgrounds, put the animation on top, then fiddle with a couple of elements in the comp to give things a little bit more depth. During this stage, errors that had happened during the animation progress that I hoped would just go away became annoyingly obvious, so there was a fair bit of going back to fix them.
So that’s how I done made this animation. I started April 2018 and posted in on January 1st 2021, so that’s over 1.5 years it took me to do these 22 seconds of animation. However, I wasn’t working on it continuously through that time. Sometimes I’d be working on it every day, other times I’d not touch it for weeks or months at a time. It really depended on how busy or whatever I was at the time. I think if I’d been working on it non-stop, it still would’ve taken me at least like 2-3 months to finish it.
If you made it to the end of this post, I hope you found all this information interesting.
Happy drawing.
It’s over, isn’t it.
