Finn's answers at Stranger Con are so interesting, because they tell us that Mike figuring out the truth about the painting is important not just for Will and his journey, but for Mike's. Opening his eyes and ears and listening, seeing what Will feels for him will make his life better. It might even help him with his depression. No matter how big the self-esteem boost is, I can't imagine another scenario for Mike's cluelessness paying off, from Mike's perspective, than Mike being in love with Will as well.
