Monday Murals - Kampong Jemput 1 by Yip Yew Chong

After a long hiatus on Yip Yew Chong’s murals painting (and a 2-year long hiatus for him painting a murals!) here’s his latest one painted back in August 2021 (I took the pictures right after it was painted but I already had my Monday posts with his other art pieces!). It’s located on the rear wall of “Heritage Collection” at 78 Arab street (in the back Alley)

“Kampong Jemput” means “welcoming village” in Malay, an olden day name for the area in front of the Sultan Mosque. This name is now mostly forgotten.

I painted three village children climbing ladders to a house to play. The imaginary house is like a tree house except that it perches on a platform nailed high up on the wall.

In the past, wooden ladders leading to upper storeys of shophouses were commonly seen lining Arab Street’s five-footways. All the ladders had disappeared except one at the Arab Street-North Bridge Road junction. Shopkeepers would use the pulley systems to bring goods up and down through holes in the ceiling/floor boards. (From his Instagram and Facebook post)

Kicking off the Singapore Bicentennial celebrations @sgbicentennial #SgBicentennial had Singaporean artist Teng Kai Wei doing an #opticalillusion of the iconic Sir Stamford Raffles statue. Some interesting facts about this much-photographed statue: The statue is actually a copy of the original dark bronze statue, and was placed here in 1969 on the 150th anniversary of Singapore’s founding. The much older, original statue, is located in front of Victoria Memorial Hall at Empress Place. What a lovely surprise to come across great music while using the Coleman Bridge underpass, crossing from Boat Quay to Clarke Quay. Love the guys who are clearly having fun busking - they're Flyin' Hii and play at Funq @ Haji Lane on Fridays.
