“Why can’t you just talk normally?”

I get this fairly often. From people that don’t know me well. They find my use of words to be odd. But seriously this is how I talk. I use words like pursuant, and moot in conversation. English is one of my Special Interests. I know it well, and I use it well. In addition I learned a lot of words when I was a kid. I had a stutter, and if I couldn’t say one word, I learned to substitute a synonym. That’s how I still talk. If I feel a word is going to be an issue, I shift to a different one.

This isn’t trying to sound in a particular way. I’m not trying to put on airs. This is how I talk.

Deal with it.

How do you play? Each thing about you that causes hate and/or discrimination from the genral public and maybe even the government earns you 1 point! I have poor hygiene

I have trouble speaking (as in, I have a stutter)

And thats everything I can think of about myself, I have 12 "invalid" points. How invalid am I? Not invalid at all. I have not hurt anyone in my beliefs and struggles, I have reasons for my "lazy" and "gross" behaviours that go beyond "I don't wanna". I will not change myself because others want me to, keep your own fucking nose in your own fucking business.

Having a stutter can be so funny sometimes because I have terms that I never thought I would see again but could not attempt to say without having a 30 second brain meltdown. I have never been able to say this word. But it’s fine bc when am I going to see a specific microbial genetics term for a specific version of a specific gene regulator again? Right? Of all the ones I’ve discussed SURELY it won’t come up again in a separate class. The ONE micro class I have left before I get my degree?

I have word nemeses and one is ppGppp and it WILL come up in lecture tomorrow.

I’m never serious on this website but I would genuinely love to see a push towards normalizing speech impediments.

I’ve been mocked for having one throughout my life, from middle school bullies to “progressive” people I met in college. I’ve had adults tell me as A CHILD that I wont be able to find a job as an adult because of it

I’m just tired of only seeing myself in media as the weird nerd you’re meant to mock.

Hey quick psa or whatever.

If you have a friend/ coworker/ literally any human person who speaks with a stutter or other speech impediment and you say shit like: can you hurry it up, stuh- stuh- stuh- stutter!!!, or inturrupt them: disrespectfully shut the fuck up. I'm so fucking done with people interrupting me mid sentence because they can't handle that people have speech problems. Everytime someone tries to finish a sentence for me I want to tell them to shut the fuck up, and let me speak!! But I cant!! The only time you should even think about finishing a sentence for someone is if they give you specifically express permission to help them through sentences. (If you wanna do this, try it with people who you are around a lot and/ or people who have similar speech patterns to you!)

Related: if someone is stuttering and you start referencing that one meme (the one where it goes like "when you- when you- whEeEeen" and that little kid stuttering video) consider doing LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE. Most of us are already embarrassed by our speech impediments, and someone saying shit like that isn't helping, and also isn't funny to anyone.
