I wanna draw the boys at the shiekan really badly, my interpretation of them is different from others I've seen and I think it'd be interesting to explore :)
in my head souji is very different to how he is as an adult, he's very non-verbal and quiet. He shows promise in martial arts though so he continues. he's close to kondo but warms up to hijikata too in a very hot/cold kind of way. as he reaches puberty he becomes more social, a lot of his initial behavior as a child came from the fact that he was seperated from his sister's during that time and was at the dojo on his own. Some of his tenacity with learning the sword however comes from his fear, I imagine a scene between him and kondo like "why are you pushing yourself so hard? you're very young, you still have plenty of time to learn." "Because... if I can't be a good student, they'll take me away."

RECORD OF RAGNAROK x READER BUT THE READER IS A JEDI:
Tumblr media
- NO BRO BECAUSE BRUNHILDE WOULD BE ALL: "YOU SAID I COULD CHOOSE HUMANS, YOU NEVER SPECIFIED THEY HAD TO BE ON EARTH!!"
- Obviously the usual Jedi mind tricks aren't gonna work on Gods but like, the Force telekinesis is great for throwing them around like ragdolls.
- You're gonna be a pretty experienced Jedi, okay. For plot reasons and bc those Gods need to be humbled fr.
- YOU AND SASAKI KOJIRO ARE DEFINETLY BEST FRIENDS ON THE HUMAN'S SIDE, you teach him the sword ways of your fellow Jedi and he teaches you about some of his own sword fighting techniques as well.
- Soji absolutely adoring you and wanting to train with you constantly. Kondo also has great respect for you and while you are concerned with their thirst for violence and laugh rather nervously at it. However, you admire their sense of justice and they admire yours and your virtues as well.
- Raiden also 100% begs you to let him try out your lightsaber, LIKE P L E A S E IT IS ALL HE WANTS. LET HIM. LET HIM. PLEASE. You eventually have to use Force Illusion to make him forget because you're trying to meditate.
- SPEAKING OF MEDITAITION, YOU AND BUDDHA ARE ALSO GOOD BUDDIES. Your beliefs align with his so well and you applaud him for standing up what he believes in and he shrugs and just says the other gods are petty fools.
- ALSO, YOU JUST HAVING TO CALM DOWN BRUNHILDE WHEN SHE LOSES OR COMFORTING HER. Like the loss of Hercules was devastating and Göll didn't help, although you understood why she was upset, so you just went to check in on her and found her crying and ran over to comfort her and assure her battle is not easy for anyone.
- I also love the idea of you just having Göll meditate with you and and bringing her peace, she is so young and honestly, if things were different and you were able to train her just a little, you'd think she'd make a wonderful Palawan.
- Then there's Jack the Ripper, a terrible and tragic man whose heart has been mislead and misguided far too many times. You knew he wasn't the real Jack the Ripper and you just sense that his soul was capable of heinous crimes, he was just lonely. Meanwhile, DO YOU THINK JACK COULD SEE LIKE THE FORCE AROUND YOUR AURA?? LIKE, MIGHT THAT BE A THING?? AND HE LOVES YOUR COLOR THE WAY IT IS.
- I'd write the Gods but I'm too impatient but Thor wants to fight you so badly and also, like, IMAGINE THEM SEEING YOU FORCE HEAL YOURSELF IN BATTLE AND MEANWHILE, YOU'RE JUST ATTACKING THEM AND THEY'RE ALL: THAT IS SO NOT FAIR, WHAT-"
- Also u have platonic relationships with all of them bc you live by the "Jedi aren't supposed to fall in love" rule but like, if anyone wanna makes a request when they're open, I am not opposed-

A3! Event Story Translation “NEW ERA GARDEN” [Chapter 4]
An episode dedicated to Kasumi's feelings about his role and his past as a leader.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kasumi
“Toshi-san, there’s this interesting rumor I’ve heard from an older lady.”
It’s hard to get the intonation right… The emphasis should be here…
“Kondo-san, I’ll stand guard here! I won’t let anyone escape!”
Kaede
Papa, are you playing as a woman?
Tsubaki
Or are you playing a guy?
Sakura
Which is it~?
Kasumi
Uh… Actually…
Tumblr media
Kasumi
…Y-Yukio-san, this… is a mistake, right…?
Yukio
It’s not.
Kasumi
Eeh!? B-but I can’t believe I’m the only double cast…
Yukio
As for you, I wanted to see you play as both Kimigiku and Todo Heisuke.
You played Lady Shizuka in “Traces of a Dream” already, and just playing the beautiful Kimigiku is boring, isn’t it?
And I also want as many people as possible for the Ikedaya incident scene.
Kasumi
No, no, no, no way! I wouldn’t care much if it’s just a female only role, but I’ve been blank for too long and yet you already want me in the Ikedaya fight…!
It’s like a neighborhood kid getting caught in a gang leader fight!
Yukio
It’ll be fine. Yuzo said he’ll teach you.
Yuzo
…Yeah. Leave it to me. I’ll put you through the Shinsengumi hazing process.
Kasumi
!!!
Tumblr media
Kasumi
(...Yuzo looked like a complete bully that time.)
This time, papa will play as two people, two roles at once, it’ll be a lot of work.
Kaede
You should practice a lot, then. Kaede and her friends always practice a lot of dances at the nursery.
Tsubaki
Do it everyday. You have to get it right.
Sakura
You’ll be able to do it after enough practice.
Kaede
Let’s play over there so we don’t get in the way.
Tsubaki
Okie!
Sakura
Good luck, papa~.
Kasumi
T-thanks…
…Sigh.
*He flips the page*
(In the other play I acted as Lady Shizuka after a long while of not playing female characters, and I got a lot of compliments from a lot of people. I'm looking forward to playing Kimigiku.)
(The only problem is Todo Heisuke… Hopefully… I’ll get the hang of it after some practice.)
(Now that I think about it, I remember the first time I was on stage there were three sword fights, it was a mess…)
Tumblr media
“...Haah, haah, my bad…”
I’d be on my knees at first, it was hard to get up.
My body ached everywhere and my body felt heavy like steel.
It was as if the gravity only changed around me and pulled me down.
“...If the leader’s gonna be like this, there’s nothing to discuss, shouldn’t we just replace this guy?”
Syu-san’s bluntness and arrogance was nothing out of the ordinary, but it struck my heart this time.
I was pathetic and remorseful, I couldn’t even get myself to face them.
It was the first time I was assigned a role where I had to fight.
No matter how much I practiced, no matter how slow I took my time, I couldn’t reenact the movements properly at all.
I looked like I was doing a Lantern festival dance instead of having the form of a swordsman.
It’s no wonder that Syu-san, who taught it, was dismayed.
“Alright well, let’s leave the fight scene at that for today before you get hurt.”
I heard Yukio-san’s gentle voice interrupt and just bowed my head, devastated by my own shortcomings.
“...”
Yuzo looked at me like he wanted to tell me something, but with the state of my mind, I couldn't take another word, I left the rehearsal room as if to escape.
“...Today’s the day I’ll get it right.”
The next morning, I was determined and went to the rehearsal room early.
“Well, aren't you early?” “Eh, Yuzo? Why are you…”
Immediately after that, he threw a wooden sword at me and Yuzo told me to prepare myself.
“Get in form.”
Subconsciously, I handled the wooden sword as Syu-san had taught me.
“Try to move the same way as I do.”
“But, Yuzo, your role…”
“I already got your movements memorized in my head. Try to keep up the pace.”
“—T-thanks.”
Repeating it over and over and adjusting the speed, eventually I got it right for the first time.
“Yes! Finally!”
I was able to keep up with the other members at the same pace.
The joy of being able to do something I couldn’t before welled up deep inside me.
“This is just the beginning. Go show Syu-san, that this role is yours alone.”
“...Yeah!”
Yuzo usually only smacktalks me, but he helps me out so casually like this when I’m going through something difficult.
He really is a reliable childhood friend.
As a way to show my gratitude for being helped like this,
I definitely made that role mine, and mine alone.
I made up my mind and got back into the flow of things.
Tumblr media
Kasumi
(Back then, I felt like I had to do my absolute best as the leader of the Spring Troupe.)
(...I wonder if Sakuya-kun also had a tough time with fight scenes.)
Rather, the upcoming play, Sakuya-kun might come to see it…!?
(He adores me as the first Spring Troupe leader, I can’t just show Sakuya-kun an unseemly sword fight.)
Sigh…
(I got no choice, I’ll just have to suck it up and ask Yuzo for help.)
(In the story, Kimigiku supports the Shinsengumi from the shadows, meanwhile Todo Heisuke leaves the Shinsengumi later.)
(It overlaps with my desire to support MANKAI Company in the shadows in different ways despite my departure from the theater.)
…You really are amazing, Yukio-san.
(Honestly, you’re like a wizard.)

Fun fact: This is historically accurate as hijikatas blade was 3 shaku and i think kondos sword 'kotestu' was even bigger (around 4 shaku if i remember correctly)

Trip to Mibu-dera
I accomplished my long-time dream of visiting Mibu-dera today! The Shinsengumi lived there for a couple of years in their early days ^-^ We couldn’t take any photos inside, but here are just a few of the photos from the day (please excuse my subpar photography lol):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although we couldn’t take photos inside, I want to mention that the inner part of the main temple was absolutely gorgeous. It was ornately decorated and houses a Buddhist statue that dates back to the Heian period.
In a room on the side of the temple you can see Hijikata and Kondo’s swords, as well as some of their letters. My kanji is limited and I couldn’t take out my phone for translation help, so I’m slightly embarrassed to say that I ended up asking some of the other museum patrons to explain things to me in more simple Japanese. Thankfully, people were really nice and I was able to learn a lot more thanks to them :)
I ended up buying a goshuincho and a bag from the gift shop. For those who don’t know, a goshuincho allows you to collect signatures from the various shrines you visit. The signatures serve as wonderful souvenirs to show where you’ve visited. Today alone I ended up collecting three signatures between Mibu dera, an enmusbi shrine, and then the Go’o shrine near the Imperial Palace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I worked hard touring Mibu dera, so of course I had to treat myself to some Shinsengumi ice cream afterward haha.
Tumblr media
As you can see, the ice cream is blue and white, and the little cookie has Makoto inscribed onto it! The ice cream flavor was simple and milky, and the cookie had a pleasant almond taste. It was really refreshing and I recommend it! The shop is called Dandara Coffee and it’s right next door to the temple.
I still intend to go to the Yagi house and various other Shinsengumi spots around Kyoto, but luckily I’ll be studying here until May so I’ve got time! If you have any recommended spots in Kyoto or the surrounding areas (Shinsengumi-related or otherwise), I would love to hear them :D

Dr. Bauduin's farewell party at Daikokuji temple, 1867.
Matsumoto Ryojun and Dr. Bauduin were likely acquaintances: both of them were doctors of Western medicine and had a keen interest in photography, small communities for their time. Additionally, Matsumoto had studied under Bauduin's predecessor, Pompe van Meerdervoort, at Nagasaki, and had been intimately involved in the foundation and spread of Western medicine in Japan.
I wonder if Dr. Matsumoto was invited to this event? Is he among the crowd lining up for pictures in front of the temple? We can see many Japanese doctors, who stand out among the samurai by their shaved heads, even though they also carry swords.
It makes me wish the images were more clear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I always enjoy scanning through the crowds in big group pictures like these because you'll never know what small details you'll find.
On the left: I spotted these two samurai in the center of the second photo holding hands with each other in a kind of half-hug. No inference about their relationship from me, I just thought it was cute.
On the right: This one was taken from the first photo and it's the front row of men standing behind the geisha who are seated at the front right. My brain wants to say, look, it's Dr. Matsumoto on the left with Hijikata (middle) and Kondo (right). It's just my delusion. 😅

Introducing my Touken Ranbu OC Sekishin Okimitsu, Sannan/Yamanami Keisuke's Sword 💕
The hair was supposed to be black but a green tint would show when light hits it. I wanted the hair color to complement the color of the clothes. I'm not sure if I should change the green tint since people might think I'm copying Nikkari. (I might change it to a different color later)
I wanted him to have a red, black, white, and silver color palette. (I might change the colors a bit later since I'm not 100% happy with it) Fun Fact, Okimitsu has the kanji for red (赤) and heart (心) in his name. I wanted to incorporate this into his design.
I wanted him to look really pretty but also fragile. Since he's an Osaka sword like Saito's Kijinmaru. Swords made in Osaka were said to have been very beautiful but break very easily. Kondo even wrote in a letter saying that they were no good.
Also, I don't know if you can see it in the images above but I'm really proud of how the subtle coloring in the lips came out 💕
Tumblr media
also, I just realized I forgot the hood on his haori arrgh
I had this idea that Sanan raised Okimitsu as a young sword spirit and thought of him like a son. Then he broke/died and this devastated Sanan 💔

Okita Souji's personality according to an old newspaper article
Okita Souji had certain "habit" according to the Telegraph newspaper article. That is, a habit of mocking people.
The article goes as follows:
He had a habit of taunting others, and even when he was in practice with swordsmen who were better than he was, he would stop the one who was about to strike him on the mask and say, "There we go, there we go, that's the mask".
This was the "habit" he did in that incident at the restaurant described in the article:
"Look at this commoner's swordsmanship. Strike here, you idiot!" he knocked on his own head with his left fist. With this, the man on guard was so angry that he slashed the tip of his sword into the wall.
Also, when fighting with the sumo wrestlers, seeing the gomenbo pole hitting the ground in vain after Okita dodged it, Okita teased them, "What was that for? The ground must be crying in pain." The angry sumo wrestlers chased after Souji and were led away from the headquarters.
Tumblr media
The article summarizes that Okita's "habit" seemed to be a shortcoming, but it turned out to be a good thing.
If Souji had a habit of "taunting" people on a regular basis, there would be many such testimonies, but there is no such story in the testimonies of Kondo Yugoro, Yagi Tamesaburo, and others.
In the article, when Kondo Daizo (近藤大造), also a member of the Tennen Rishin-ryu, warned Souji that he would fail someday because of his arrogance, Souji replied, "You're right. I'll refrain from it", but it's a habit that he never corrected, the story goes.
If the source of this article is Kondo Daizo, it is possible that the "habit" appears only during training and fighting.
He would rile up his opponent to create an opening or keep the enemy away from the headquarters where his ill Commander was located.
This may have been Souji's special tactic rather than a "habit".
From this article, we can see not only his boldness in going alone to face the enemy, but also his cleverness. It gives us a glimpse into his personality.
I don't know if this is the reason, but the character for "intelligence" (賢) is also used in Souji's posthumous Buddhist name, "賢光院仁誉明道居士".
The scene in which Souji quickly goes to the restaurant, saying, "If we wait around too long, we will not be respected as law-enforcement", shows Souji's impatient side, while his concern for his mentor, such as his concern for the sick Isami, is also described.
He was brave and smart, and although he had a short temper, he was kind to his Commander.
Perhaps this was Souji's image at that time.
However, who was Kondo Daizo, who seems to be the source of this article? I would like to follow up when I have a chance.

Konhiji Week Day 7 - Free day! Symbolism & the like
Some notes below:
Flowers: Toshi's are Bellflower (obedience) & Iris (loyalty + its the flower for 5/5) Kondo's are Camellia (the entire flower falls off the plant, "decapitating" it. also love) and Globe Amaranth (immortality + unfading love) Collar & Chain: The leashed dog ouroboros of it all. Kondo's collar is a ref to ep 10, Toshi's collar's color palette (kinda) pulls from Muramasha's*. Snake: Featured on Muramasha's* tsuba.
Brambles/Thorns: Deals with the whole "Thorny"/"Baragaki" thing Toshi's got going on.
Wolves/Canines: This guy's wolfcoded. Dogcoded even. Butterfly: I've been using this predominately for Goriko (as an extrapolation on her canonical kimono's pattern), but it's tied to ideas of immortality, rebirth, and transformation. Theres also a liiittle bit of marriage symbolism as well. Horns, Halos, Kanabō & Wings: Demonic Vice Chief vs the guy he puts on a pedestal. Demon/angel motifs are just really fun to use w/ these guys. Incorporated a kanabō specifically for the oni associations. (*The cursed sword introduced in the Shinsengumi Crisis Arc, for those who forgot the name.)
