I finished my Temeraire reread and I am very sad about it :( These books have been with me for 15 years and I still love them so deeply. I have a million more thoughts (and shitposts) that will no doubt come bubbling up in the next couple of days but right now I am just really sad that it's over

still not over the fact that laurence’s memories of tharkay are so inextricably linked with memories of his new life, with the most crucial moments of it, such that to remember the former is to recall the latter, and still his subconscious would not relinquish tharkay to escape from that remembrance
the fact that tharkay is not only the key to unlock the door, but also the link itself: the only person whose existence can help laurence reconcile his old self with his new one, and help him be whole again

Ever since that "can your fave survive castle Dracula" blog did Stephen Maturin I've been thinking about Temeraire Characters vs. Castle Dracula so here's the breakdown: Laurence: About as good odds as the average Jonathan Harker. He has similar approach to religion (and would probably take the crucifix out of social obligation) and ability to manage the social situation with Dracula. He has experience being prisoner of various groups for various motives, and he has a tendency to accidentally make arrogant tyrants fall in love with him, so he's good on the "keeping Dracula's attention" front. If he managed to get in the baby situation he'd probably die because he'd try to save it (self-sacrificial martyr streak) but it's unlikely he'd end up in that exact spot with the vampire ladies since I think he'd be a lot more military and methodical about any exploring and always return to safe zones up until his actual escape attempt. Anyway if he lives long enough to try climbing he's home free, the man might not be a born and bred aviator but he's been climbing first ships' rigging and then dragon harness his entire life and once escaped a palace that was on fire by climbing down the outside. CAN survive. Tharkay: As a major proponent of “if it sucks, hit da bricks,” Tharkay climbed out the window on night #1. Granby: Granby would take the crucifix and from there it would mostly depend on how much Dracula finds him entertaining. Granby won't be polite about being imprisoned, and is used to Iskierka who will react to his protests by overruling him instead of getting bored and killing him. So i'm inclined to think Dracula would not find him so fun, in which case he probably would kill him early on. That said he could probably make the climb even one-handed. (again, burning palace experience) Could Survive but Probably Won't. Sorry Granby. Jane Roland: I will be honest I do not see any situation in which Jane could be tempted into castle Dracula in the first place, at least not without Excidium also being there on a mission of destruction. She's more of a Quncy Morris type, only she wouldn't die because she'd be on the back of a fifteen ton dragon who will melt Dracula into a horrible goo from aloft. Survives, by virtue of not playing.
Arthur Hammond: I cannot stress enough how fast this man dies.
Temeraire: Is a dragon the size of a frigate with a sonic attack that regularly causes landslides. Castle Dracula does not survive him.

“Temeraire could no longer complain at all whenever Tharkay wished them to stop again, and neither could Iskierka; instead they peered over his shoulder, at whatever speck of dirt or dust he might be inspecting, and tried to work out whatever traces he had found.”

That One Scene from @sere-allwehaveisnow's Hardly getting over it. It utterly wrecked me :)
The two men were both standing now, almost toe to toe. Tharkay ran a hand through his hair, frustrated. “What would you have had me do, Will?” he said, angrily. “Watch you walk yourself up to the scaffold? Again?—and this time succeed? Do you have any idea what that would do to me, to Temeraire—” “That choice, sir, was not yours to make.”  Their voices had been rising in volume and pitch, but Laurence’s harsh tone took them both by surprise; Tharkay took a step back, recoiling.  They paused, staring at one another, as if truly seeing each other for the first time.

Ugh Tharkay snuck out again. He's so dramatic.
My prediction: Laurence will manage to get the egg from Mustafa&co (what he thinks is) just in time to get it to Malta to bond an aviator there, but the twist in the third act is that it hatches earlier than expected and bonds Tharkay.
Because come on. There is NO way that Novik isn't going to give the only firebreather to her coolest character

AMNESIA TROPES(spoilers for Blood of Tyrants)
I mean yes of course Laurence gets his memory back when he finds that final, missing piece of his post-1804 life but
This really moved me because it reminded me of Laurence breaking down in Victory of Eagles-when he couldn't reconcile with this new Laurence who chose to do Right and not Proper(although he was doing this right from the start in HMD, he didn't want to separate these two values, and he chose to hang on to that belief-fast-fading that his Country was Right) like he was standing upon a breaking bridge but couldn't move, couldn't admit to himself that he was already committed
And Tharkay, he just made him see properly, where Laurence stood. He pulled Laurence's hands from his eyes-none too gently-and Laurence had to admit, he was already committed, and he had to move on and do what's Right. At that point Laurence could finally let go of Proper, Proper Laurence who could leave moral choices to amoral structures.
Because of Tharkay, Laurence saw that he changed. Laurence could finally mourn, accept, and move on.
No wonder that Tharkay, once again, let Laurence do exactly that.

continuing with the BPW reread...
ohhhh the way Laurence cuts right to Tharkay's core, pushing past all of Tharkay's airs and attempts to brush past it with, "I think you like to be doubted". And Tharkay still having this sardonic, defensive tone as he explains himself BUT his hand is shaking ever so slightly and for the first time, he's slipping to the point that Laurence can recognize his expression for what it is: a mask badly put-on. Because racing through the streets of Istanbul and then being pulled into this conversation aside, he was probably already upset and feeling raw and vulnerable after being told about Sara's engagement.
For all that Tharkay is explaining why he treats people this way, he is saying, almost as plainly as possible, that he is so so so very lonely. And that's the crux of it, isn't it? He could bear being an outcast, but he can't bear being lonely. And now he doesn't even have Sara or her family who cared about him enough to be apologetic and try to break the news to him with gentle sympathy, so he's never going to return to Istanbul again because now he has no one at all.
And then...and then Tharkay realizes that no, Laurence has never in fact treated him like how the others do, except for when he deserved it. And despite everything, Laurence still wants to be allies. And how what Laurence is asking is not really, "Will you listen to my command from now on," but more "I want to trust you because I think you are worthy of being trusted, of being known. Will you allow me to trust you?"
and Tharkay putting on flippant airs and yet, in the same breath, grabbing on to Laurence's hand firmly with the utmost sincerity...tharkay........
