Current gaming situation 🕹✨

Felt like sharing the games I'm currently playing, even if I've paused some of them because of my lack of time 😅

-Super Mario Bros. Wonder 💙

I'm literally stuck on the second to last level, and I can't access the last one until I'm done with this one 😫 It's being such a pain! I don't wanna spoil anything for those who haven't played this game yet, so I'll simply mention two words and make them small so you can avoid them: music blocks 😬

-Super Mario RPG ❤

I can't even remember the last time I played this game 😭 Peach had just joined the gang, but I haven't had the chance to continue playing in forever and I simply can't wait to resume it! 🥹

-Luigi's Mansion 3 💚

Okay, I actually beat this game twice throughout this year 😂 So I only play once in a while, unhurried, chilling and enjoying the adventures of Luigi hunting ghosts in a haunted hotel 👻 Also Polterpup 😭😭😭 Cutest dog EVER 🥹🥹🥹

-Super Mario Odyssey ❤

I started replaying this game for the second time a few months ago, and again, I had to stop due to life happening 😅 I played it for the first time back when I bought it in 2018, so I'm kinda rediscovering it and I'm enjoying it just as much as the first time! 🤩 (or was, you know what I mean 😂) New Donk City has to be my favorite part btw!

-Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga 💚❤

THIS GAME 😭😭😭 This was my very first Mario RPG game and also my first RPG game EVER, and it was the one that made me fall in love with Mario and Luigi for the first time, and with their cute brotherly bond as well 🥹 And it was also the first one that got me into writing fanfics, so OF COURSE I had to replay it as soon as I got Nintendo Switch Online! 😭

I've replayed it sooooo many times during its 20 years! 🥹 I was 13 when I got it for my GBA, and I obviously got the remake for 3DS years later, but even though I love it, I still prefer the original one. Mario and Luigi look so cute with all those pixels! 😭❤💚

Those Bros. Attacks, those references to Luigi's Mansion and The Legend of Zelda, the Firebrand and Thunderhand!!! 😭😭😭 This game means the whole world to me and I'm just so happy I got to replay it again on my Nintendo Switch! 🥹

And of course: Prince Peasley 🤭 Look at this gif I found, AW aren't they adorable!? 😭😭😭 @itsavee4117 let's fangirl together 🥹😭💚💛✨

So yeah! These are the games I have started but haven't gotten the chance to finish yet, even if three of them are actually replays 🤭 I ocassionally play Mario Kart 8 and Tetris as well, and I get back to Disney Dreamlight Valley whenever there's a new update 🤭

These are some games I would like to play next year (once I'm done with the ones I mentioned above):

-Super Mario Galaxy, since I own a copy of Super Mario 3D All Stars but never found the time to play this game, except for a very short try!

-Paper Mario, since I never got to play it as a child and it's available on Nintendo Switch Online! 🤩

-Banjo-Kazooie, one of my childhood games that I ADORE with all my heart 🥹 Same as with Paper Mario, I wanna replay it since it's available on Nintendo Switch Online!

-A bunch of old The Legend of Zelda games: Minish Cap, Ocarina of Time, Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages... I played all those games growing up and I really loved them! And again, they're available on Nintendo Switch Online, so it's just a matter of finding the time to replay them little by little.

-Princess Peach Showtime. Of course I wanna try the new Princess Peach game! 🤩 Can't wait for it to come out next year! 👏

-Luigi's Mansion 2: Dark Moon. BUT OF COURSE. I mean: it's Luigi. How could I NOT wanna (re)play this game? I own it for 3DS but it's going to be such a BLAST to play it on my Switch next year! 🤩

-Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. My second favorite Mario RPG game EVER 🥹 (only after Superstar Saga) I literally screamed and burst into tears when the remake was announced in the last Nintendo Direct 😭 This game is so important to me! I can't wait to replay it next year 🥹😭❤✨

wh I well I wh how could I possibly refuse hee hee hee hee

limiting this to hindi cinema helps!! or so I thought, before I went through several rounds of intense interrogation and several scribbled pages of notes and realized this just outs me as a baby shah rukh khan stan, which I am. I resisted every impulse to try to make the list broad and varied and kept only repeating 'what are your FAVORITES, what are your FAVORITES' and even then narrowing everything down was really painful... I feel like I've watched very many but then not very many at all.

There are another half-dozen more I had to cut with great anguish (Paheli, Ram-Jaane, the Don films) OMG EDITED TO FINISH MY FRIGGIN SENTENCE: BUT I PRESENT TO YOU AND TO ALL: VI TSUPERTSUNDERE'S TOP TEN:

Mohabbatein ("Love Stories", dir Aditya Chopra, 2000)

A young men's college ruled by a headmaster who disdains love--can one music teacher help three love stories grow, and let love tower above all? ✫ My first hindi film. Still can't think of a better introduction. Truly has it all. My favorite ghost story also!! ✧ Standout number: the three ingenues have an incredible dance sequence - it's the emotional climax of the film for me.

Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai ("Say You Love Me", dir Rakesh Roshan, 2000)

When Rohit, an aspiring musician, meets Saxena, a rich bussinessman's daughter, his dreams of stardom glimmer right within his reach. Life has other plans. ✩ Hrithik Roshan's debut - and what a debut! My first introduction to a beloved facet of hindi cinema - double roles!! ✫ Standout number: The number that takes place in Cafe Indiana, Ek Pal Ka Jeena, accurately conveys how it felt like to go to a Rainforest Cafe when I was very young. Truly thrilling!

Muhjse Dosti Karoge! ("Will You Be My Friend!", dir Kunal Kohli, 2002)

Childhood friends Raj, Tina, and Pooja are caught in a classic love triangle - Pooja loves Raj, but he only has eyes for Tina. When he moves away, Pooja poses as Tina as they email back and forth and their friendship blossoms long-distance. A decision made in childhood brings problems to Pooja's doorstep - as they all graduate high school and become adults, Raj returns home... ✧ Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapoor are the real MVPs here - shining stars in every movie they're in. ✩ Standout Sequence: The medley, seen above, brought me to my fucking feet when we first watched it. The characters diagetically are singing these popular songs for each other at a wedding celebrations - each song's lyrics weave in and apply on multiple levels, depending on who knows what and what they mean, up to and including Hrithik Roshan reprising Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai! Genuinely one of my favorite sequences I've seen period on film, if I could ever put together anything half as layered I'd be patting myself on the back forever.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... ("Through Smiles and Through Tears", dir Karan Johar, 2001)

The wealthy Raichand family splits in half when elder son Rahul falls in love with a lower-caste girl and marries her - younger son Rohit watches his beloved brother disappear to England and the light in his home wither away. When he becomes an adult, he's determined to find his brother and unite them all again. ✫ These three fuckers as a dad and two sons just make a fascinating family together, let alone the kind of heavy hitting talent you get from Jaya Bachchan (indeed married to Amitji) and of course Kajol my beloved Kajol most of all. 'It's All About Loving Your Parents' is a much much much... much harder sell than I'm prepared to give - at the very least, it's all the drama I can watch in. ✫ Standout Sequence: Bole Chudiyan above is so much fun, of course, but Say Shava Shava is also a really great 'here's how fun things are when things are GOOD' establishing song. When Amitji says 'EVERYBODY' he is not asking!!

Those four films are a truncated highlight reel of the 8 or so films I like watching around the holidays!! They work really well together and I associate them with each other a lot.

Darr ("Fear", dir Yash Chopra, 1993)

Kiran Awasthi has a freshly minted college degree, a bus ticket home, a beloved boyfriend in the Navy... and a stalker. A young woman is slowly driven mad by a ruthless specter who will stop at nothing to be by her side. As she and her boyfriend escalate... so does he. ✧ Truly breathtaking. A breakout role for SRK, another hit cementing Juhi Chawla my fucking beloved Juhi Chawla as the OG expression queen. My favorite horror film. Rahul Mehra deserves to be in Dead By Daylight so he can fight Leon in a twink off. Simply the bloodiest there is. My Halloween costume next year. ✩ Standout sequence: Any time Juhi Chawla is on screen and I'm not kidding.

Chaahat ("Desire", dir Mahesh Bhatt, 1996)

When the father of a father-and-son comedy duo gets sick, his son, Roop, would do anything to secure the money he needs to restore his father's health. So when he catches the eye of a wealthy club owner's sister, he can't say no, no matter how much her desire consumes... ✫ Diametric opposite of Darr, now Shah Rukh Khan is the target!! As a carnivore girl lover I can't not adore it. ✧ Standout sequence: Chaahat Na Hoti, pictured above. This was the frame that made me sit up and go 'oh I have to... I gotta watch this movie right now. Right now.' And I was so right.

Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani ("Yet, I Have the Heart of an Indian", dir Aziz Mirza, 2000)

Ajay Bakshi is a hotheaded, loudmouthed reporter - a rival media network hires his counterpart and superior, Ria Bannerjee, to try to take him down. ✫ A gag-a-minute comedy with more gumflaps than brains, just like our lead. Juhi is heaven in this. I can only describe this as 'I think this is what the guy from American Psycho THOUGHT was going on.' Was a flop - came out right after Kaho Na... Pyaar Hai and couldn't compete - but it hits the zany button like nothing else. ✧ Standout sequence: The inventiveness of the sets in pretty much every song is my favorite. CONTENT WARNING: There is an awful anti-Chinese gag sequence at about the middle of the film. The two leads pose as Chinese reporters to get into somewhere, and it's just wall to wall racial caricatures. I hit that ff button through it myself, a truly unpleasant marring in an otherwise goofy-ass romp.

Chak de! India ("Let's go! India", dir Shimit Amin, 2007)

Can a disgraced former field hockey star turn 16 proud, contentious players from all over the country into one unified team as their coach? Can each young woman play her all on the field - for herself and for her team? ✩ A sports anime fit into one film, I wish it were several seasons long. Each girl is spectacular and is a joy to watch!! ✫ Standout Sequence: The character work is where this one shines. Bindiya Naik is my personal favorite (and not just because the instant I saw her performance I went 'omg, she's playing my OC almost exactly. I'd cast her in a heartbeat!)

Fan (dir Maneesh Sharma, 2016)

Aryan Khanna is the King of Bollywood. Gaurav Chandna is almost him, but not quite - knows everything about him by heart, uses him as the light in his life, and Gaurav even looks just enough like him to boot. All Gaurav wants is five minutes of his time. Just five minutes... ✩ Eminem's 'Stan' as a feature length thriller that literally no one else could make. I can only quote this letterboxd review, because it's right: "even if there was another celebrity who could pull off tearing himself open to splash his own imposter syndrome onscreen, they wouldn't dare try...happy birthday to the only actor good enough to make his fans sympathize with his own stalker". I was SO upset to learn that this flopped. ✫ Standout Sequences: the practical and special effects used to differentiate SRK's two roles bar none some of the best I've experienced - uncanny valley is real here, and half of the horror is the ALMOST. but not quite.

While I followed a loose, non-ranking order for the preceding nine entries, I had to save the only possible film for number one:

Om Shanti Om (dir Farah Khan, 2007)

"30 years ago," irrepressible junior artist Om Prakash Makhija has only one dream grander than making it big in the film industry - to get a chance to act alongside his greatest inspiration, superstar Shanti. His wish comes true, but, well... some dreams, one lifetime is not enough... ✫ THE BEST MOVIE THAT EXISTS. THE BEST MOVIE THAT DOESN'T EXISTS. Don't believe me? Let these ladies convince you - when I learned that somehow The Coolest And Most Sparkling theater troupe on the face of the planet staged a production of this I literally got so lightheaded I couldn't see for a second. This movie came out when I was thirteen - if I had seen it then I think it would have made a huge difference. As it was, I saw it at the second most perfect time: when I was/am also a 30 year old irrepressible junior goofball, just like Om. Farah Khan is one of my favorite directors for certain. A film about the hindi film industry, I place it last also because the more faces you recognize, songs you can pick out, movie references you can catch, the better - and it's incredible even still. ✧ Standout sequence: I can't say the whole movie (... minus Deewangi Deewangi it's the Yakuza 4 of this movie) can I??? Let me just say - long story short, Farah Khan got the idea for this film when Andrew Lloyd Weber had her to choreography for his stage show, Bollywood Dreams. She thought the plot, a poor junior artist becoming a big Bollywood star, was eye-rollingly unrealistic. She could do better, she thought... and that idea eventually became Om Shanti Om. The climax is her proving she could do Phantom of the Opera better than him, too!!

And, if you'll indulge me... in thanks for giving me a really fun thing to do today, I have one more film: one that I think you would like, based off of the vibes of the journal entries I got to read!

Veer-Zaara (dir Yash Chopra, 2004)

An Indian pilot and the daughter of a Pakistani politician fall in love, but are wrenched apart when the pilot is imprisoned on false charges. He languishes 22 years in prison, never saying a word, until a young Pakistani lawyer is assigned his case and she is determined to see him freed... ✧ Certified Mom Movie and is an absolute banger. When I thought 'who would be a character who I could see Estelle looking forward to meeting for lunch', Rani Mukherjee's lawyer was right at the top of the list. ✫ Standout Sequence: My personal favorite, Main Yahaan Hoon, is the song linked above. It drives me Insane absolutely Insane - this depicts 'they're not in the room but they're the only thing on your mind' in a way seldom more effective!

omg NOW I'm done for eel. This was a terrific exercise in tilling the soil in my brain - I'm really inspired by the all visual direction, the colors and depths, the sensibilities in general exemplified by the movies here, and hope to one day reflect it in my own work! I have to make the Yash Raj reshade shaders I want to see in the world.

Takia & Rhys are platonic friends, so i'd rather not watch a sex scene BUT scattered clothes/waist-up naked bed cuddling/jumping each other when the Passion Grows Too Great/overheard moans etc. would all be excellent. Also maybe a scene right after they have sex, where Ed's snoring & then it pans over to Stede whose expression is just 🤩🤩 like when Arnold Schwarzenegger loses his virginity in Twins.

Not to be like, a sex worker on main, but this is such a weird take to me.

Like first of reason it's a weird take is, I've done a fake sex scene in a filming situation before (it was for a friend's art school project as a teenager and it lasted exactly 10 seconds so it was like not serious or comparable) and trust me acting in a sex scene is not very much like having sex. And unlike what I did there's gonna be a whole intimacy coordinator and set choreographer and all that shit on set which is gonna make it even less like having sex. Like from what I gather through the grape vine if there's a blackbonnet sex scene is season 2 like what I described what happened was they took the worlds stiffest weirdest blanket that was specifically frozen into one position, and then there were like 5 people sitting just of screen in those directors chairs pausing it every few minutes to make sure everything that's happening is above board, and they're wearing jeans under that blanket, and Rosie Darby and Rita Ora are also off screen in a chair just to make sure it doesn't get to narsty (i've heard of actors spouses sitting in on sex scenes before Idk if that's standard practice but it's a thing I've heard of). So a sex scene is not sex let's just start there. You're on a set with a bunch of fucking cameras, nobody is touching anybody else's junk, they will literally make fake prosthetic junk for them to touch before they let the actors touch each other, and nobody is actually even naked. Like even in episode 8, the least sexual nudity ever, Buttons the character may have been butt fucking naked but Ewen Bremner had one of those skin color tape on g strings that makes you look like a ken doll down there.

The second reason it's a weird take for me is, as someone who has done sex work before... truly getting paid to fuck a platonic friend sounds like a dream scenario. Like that sounds like the most normal scenario I can think of. Like you would already care pretty deeply about each other's comfort level, you would be able to get passed the awkward "so uh, hi I'm ___ I guess we're having sex now" thing because that's your buddy you know them. You can meme with each other to diffuse the tension. Absolute best case scenario. The third reason this is weird to me is because... we've like, seen them kiss, presumably we want them to kiss again. But that is where the acting is real. Does them being platonic friends ruin the kiss for you too? Because they actually kissed each other. Unlike a sex scene that would not be fake.

The final reason is, like I said, we're not watching Rhys and Taika have sex because they didn't have sex (for this). But we are watching Ed and Stede have sex. Ed and Stede are not platonic friends, so the people you're watching have sex (Ed and Stede) are very much attracted to each other.

TL;DR: Any sex scene they would do on OFMD is all smoke and mirrors. Even if they literally showed us a dick going into an ass (which they're super not gonna do) that is prosthetics, ass molds and cgi. So Rhys and Taika being platonic friends who aren't attracted to each other irl should be of no object. If you would prefer to see a scene like you described rather than a full blown sex scene that's fine, but Taika and Rhys being Just Friends is quite possibly the most nonsensical reason to not want to see it. It's fine to feel weird about seeing sex on tv like that's ok you don't have to come up with some reason.

The most meaningful comments are always the ones that quote my words back at me, which is something I, personally, do a lot in comments and it gives me the ksjdslkjdka YOU CAN'T DO THAT sparkle emotions. I like to know what lines resonate with people because I can often feel when I'm reading that I just don't write lines that HIT, because, uh, I wrote them. Of course they don't hit for ME. But other people telling me what stood out is a big ego boost.

Okay I answered this one, but since I'm at my computer, I can actually go find the ones I was talking about.

This is the Lucien monologue from Chapter Two of YCDHN, aka "what if his speech at the Aether Crux went Bad" monologue.

Lucien pushed himself to his feet. “A lot of things bein’ bandied about behind one another’s backs. That’s no way to have an arrangement, now is it?” He cocked his head slightly. “And this is- or, at the very least, it was an arrangement, was it not? I become your herald on the Material Plane and bring you what you need, and, in return, I have all the power and wisdom of the ages right at the tip of my fingers.” He snapped his fingers and only because he thought they should in this moment did they make sound. He let that sink in for a moment and then began to descend the stairs towards the squirming black masses. “I haven’t been a poor Nonagon. I’ve given you more of me than what the Champions of baser gods will ever offer up on the altar, and yet it feels like this relationship has gone a bit one-sided. “And it’s a lack of communication I blame- perhaps some of it is my fault, yes, I know. I have been a bit distractable, what with the sliver and all, but I’m not alone in that, am I?” He placed a hand over his heart, the picture of melodramatic guilt, played up for an audience, like a performer on a stage. Smoke and mirrors. Give them the old razzle dazzle as Dodger used to say. But his gaze sharpened to a knife-point, turning understanding and politeness into accusation. “You’ve been cozying up to it just as well. Tryin’ to have your cake and eat it too, you hungry buggers.” He exhaled through his nose, cooling the embers of his temper. A tendril from Ira’s form reached out as if trying to grasp for the hem of his coat and then pulled back again. Lucien counted to five and then continued. “No, I think there’s a solution to this mess. I think we need to open the floor up for a bit of dialogue between us- open and honest and free of any agendas.” He met each of their single, bulbous eyes in kind, daring them to protest, but their silence remained. It was rarely ever this quiet in Cognouza- the walls he had rebuilt even blocked out the screams. “And I know you have agendas. I saw what happened when the sliver nearly shuffled off its mortal coil. I know what you mean to do to me.” ”Nonagon-“ Vigilan growled in warning. That was enough to set him off. He cackled shrilly. “You know I once thought you were gods? But you’re not gods, you’re parasites- feedin’ off a better mind because you can’t keep your own straight. I’m the only reason you can think far enough ahead to betray me.” He stopped at the last step he could take before he found himself right in the throng of them. He would not remain on their level and he would not sink below them. “And that’s fascinatin’ irony, innit?” His smile was tight and refused to reach his eyes. He pressed his tongue along his bottom teeth. “But, see, now I see through it. I know what you’re about now, and you won’t get so much as a thought from me until we stand on equal ground.” Or I stand above you, but this was a negotiation. Start small and build. He spread his hands in a gesture of good will and peace. “So let’s talk. Let’s strategize on how to best handle ourselves goin’ forwards so there’s no more unpleasantness on either side. We all know that you can’t do this without me. Fail to yield and I’ll retaliate- try sorting yourselves out without me tapped in.” The Somnovem flickered in and out, their forms twisting. Deep within the cores of the forms he gave them here, he could see the Pattern flashing. “I’m gonna take your silence as acceptance of my terms,” he chuckled and turned on his heels to march back up to his throne. A fist clenched around his heart.

And the Ashley monologue from dreamers.

Ashley looked over his shoulder to follow her gaze and dragged a hand down his clean-shaven chin. “Right. You asked me a question. What do I want… Hm. What… do I want?” He screwed up his face, considering. “World peace? Good will towards all persons? The total annihilation of literally everything in this fucking world?” He laughed, as cold and brutal as his tone of voice wasn’t. “Weirdly the, uh, that one doesn’t contradict the first two things, but you’d know all about that, wouldn’t you? You get it. You get that ever since the Calamity, things have been barreling towards the exact same scenario, ‘cept there’s no gods this time to punish the folly of man, is there? They locked all those doors up really tight after the last guy yanked the deadbolt out. So it just continues and continues on and on and on. Someone’s gotta put the kibosh in it. ‘Cause we can’t do this again. The next time mortals aim so fucking high there’s not gonna be a hand to slap us down and eventually we’ll push too far and it’s gonna be worse than if the gods had just put us in cosmic time-out with an apocalypse in our backyard.” He stopped just shy of building to an angry rant, breathed in, and then spoke softly again. “I don’t want that. I won’t be alive then, but if I was, I’d definitely hate to see what happens when hubris runs unchecked.” He leaned closer to her, almost nose to nose. “See, deep down, we both want the same things. We don’t want this world to exist anymore. You just want a better one and I want nothing because there’s no such thing as better.” The anger returned and this time he let it run unchecked. “Better is a lie that mommies and daddies tell their children so they grow up to keep rearranging deck chairs on a sinking ship. Better is a subjective term that nobody will ever agree to. The only thing that is better than what you have right now is nothing.” He spread his hands, eyes closing in a sudden serenity that came on the heels of the anger and somehow merged with it. “Absolute. Perfect. Nothingness. No pain. No suffering. No sense of self. And isn’t that exactly what you want- No, don’t answer. That was rhetorical.”

And finally, the Eve and Lucifer exchange from LTEDMD:

Lucifer faltered, gripping his cane. “We didn’t mean to hurt you, Eve.” The Mother of All Souls smiled eerily, her head tilted so far to the right that her cheek pressed into her shoulder in a half-hearted shrug. “Yeah… but you still did it.”

No one does a lot of monologuing in my Hazbin fics... so far.

Not as long as you'd think... or exactly as long as you think if you catch a draft where I fucked up something and missed it in my edits. Honestly, it depends. A lot of YCDHN chapters get their scenes written out of order so I'll do a pass on it multiple times to make sure I didn't repeat myself or that the scenes link up.

2/18/23 Recently I’ve had several very close encounters with a hummingbird in our backyard buzzing near me. At first I thought she was looking for flowers/food and attracted to my brightly-colored clothing. Then, up close, as she was whirring around, I noticed she was carrying nesting material in her beak (tiny fluff of something). I had no clue where she was building the nest. But today, looking out my home office window overlooking back patio, I saw a tiny bird sitting in a tiny nest in the wisteria vines. She built it quite close to my patio sitting spot and near to eye level — perfect for viewing. She seems unfazed by human and dog activity. Maybe we will see some tictac-sized eggs this spring? 🪺 I’ll gladly hose down the ensuing hummingbird poop on the patio to get to watch the nest activity. 🤩

3/05/23 Concern during pouring rain, severe winds, freezing temps, hail, etc whether the tiny nest/babies would survive. But have Hope.

3/08/23 Saw a male, bright-red-chested hummingbird (possibly father?) flitting around the nest, possibly feeding babies. Do male hummingbirds help with child-rearing?

3/10/23 Babies big dark eyes are closed and they don’t have many feathers. Their beaks are short and stubby compared adult hummingbird’s long, slender beaks.

3/13/23 When Hope is out looking for food, the babies stretch/poke their heads out from the nest and open their beaks when they hear me nearby, hoping to be fed. Very eager, but no vocalizations.

3/17/23 One baby is bigger than the other one. Maybe one is a runt, or maybe a male and female.

3/20/23 Babies are growing and now their heads and beaks protrude out from nest.

3/22/23 Hope’s absence from the nest has increased. Maybe she needs more time to forage for food since babies are getting bigger and need more sustenance. Or, also bc they’re getting bigger, maybe there’s no room for Hope anymore in the nest? Does she build a parent nest elsewhere?

3/24/23 Babies are occasionally “licking their lips” after feedings. They flick their tongues out and “taste the air” like a thin floppy antenna. Are they looking for more food? Or just enjoying remnants of a good meal?

3/25/23 Hope is only present for feedings. I think she has her own parent nest in our smaller redwood tree nearby. I filled and hung an old hummingbird feeder, and also bought a new one. Within minutes after hanging, I saw Hope drinking from the new red mosaic feeder. I learned that hummingbirds must feed their babies every 20 min from dawn to dusk in order for them to survive.

3/26/23 Small birds (finch? sparrow?) are plucking out tufts my new flower sprouts in the garden (grrrr!) and trying to build a nest in patio eaves corner directly above my chair. And only about two feet from hummingbird nest. I hope they get along like good neighbors.

3/27/23

Babies’ beaks are getting longer and more slender instead of their previous blunt-nosed beauties. They are almost too big for both babies to fit in the the nest together. They most often sit head-to-tail in nest. They are now occasionally vocalizing, preening, stretching/flapping their wings. Will they attempt flight soon? They look much like smaller versions of their mom instead mini half-feathered dinosaur freaks.

3/28/23 Now that there’s much less rain and the sun is actually shining, there’s much more visible hummingbird poop below the nest in all directions in about a 4-5 foot perimeter. The rainstorms helped wash it away before, but now I have to spray it down with the hose every few days. Not too much bird poop reaches my chair, which is nice. But sitting and sometimes gardening so close to nest, I worry someday I’ll get shat upon.

3/30/23 The babies have fledged! Saw only one baby in nest today. Wondered about the other one. Accidentally startled the baby left in nest by jostling the vines and it flew from the nest to nearby vine branch! Later spotted the other baby nearby on another vine branch. Hope came twice to check on them and feed them. The babies may be more mobile, but still can’t feed themselves. She also visited the empty nest, “fixing” it with her beak and chirping. The baby that flew first seems more confident, and later saw it fly off in same direction as Hope towards the redwoods. The baby that was last to leave nest is more timid, nervously looking around and ruffling feathers. I got one video of baby practicing flying from one vine to another. Worried my observing was making them nervous, I left to go inside. When I checked later, both babies were gone. The fledglings have not returned.

i haven’t heard of that app before but i’ll definitely check it out :D

i went to comprehensible japanese website and watched two of her videos. the first complete beginner video and the first beginner video. and i gotta say, i’ve noticed a lot of differences.

the beginner video uses advanced grammar that i’ve learned and ones i haven’t learned yet. though, i haven’t read through the text because the amount of unknown words lowkey overwhelmed me but i understood what she was trying to say through her video as she had little doodles and hand movements.

as for the complete beginner, it mostly uses ます forms and some conjugations found in n4 but not as much as the other video. this one i watched the video, played the audio while reading the texting (muttering under my breath to what i was reading) and then reread the text without audio and looked up words that i didn’t know and it felt to good knowing that this is a task i could manage so thank you for that! 💓💓

i really want to read naruto but i still don’t know much to actually do that so maybe after n3? i’m planning on either reading chibi maruko chan, gakuen babysitters or ouran after i’m done with n4 to slowly ease my way into reading manga in japanese.

i actually play genshin impact in japanese and i catch a lot of vocabulary! for example, i learned the word きけんな last week and in the new quest in genshin, they kept using that word and i’m just like i know this!! i know what it means 🤩 and the text is in english to help me understand. also, i play genshin impact so much that i ended up learning a new word (きょうみぐかい).

as for online learning, i’m mostly using japatalk for 会話 and it’s pretty affordable depending on the points you want to buy and i make mistakes but i immediately notice them and quickly correct myself as i don’t prepare beforehand.

Thank you, honestly, you're so nice!! I just really like talking about this stuff so don't worry about it, your asks make me really happy! Through talking to other people I've found so many amazing methods and resources, so I just think it's super exciting to exchange tips, etc. and help each other wherever possible.

As for which manga to read, I have another recommendation! You can create a free account on this website call learnnatively, which you can use to track which Japanese books you have read/are reading. The users grade the books (it gives you two books you've read and you say which book you think is more difficult) so each book has a level assigned. There are over 40 levels, but when you click on the level it also tells you which JLPT level this corresponds to.

Overall, when it comes to which manga would be easiest - always pay attention to the genre. Fantasy and Sci-fi are generally a lot more difficult since those genres usually have a lot of made up words in their stories, which you will have to learn on top of all the other vocab. So slice of life is usually the best way to start (I really like Yotsuba& and Shirokuma Cafe). Definitely check the manga you've mentioned on learnnatively to see if they're good for your level. However, if you're familiar with the story already, then you can often read it even if it's "above" your level since you will be able to fill in the blanks from memory, so don't let the level stop you and instead just try out and see whether you understand it or not.

By the way, I totally relate to that situation with new words. Sometimes, after learning a new word or grammar structure, you suddenly see it everywhere and it's such a great feeling! I mean, what's the point in learning a word you never even encounter? Learning a word and coming across it constantly is super fun, so I'm glad you're experiencing this!!

And you're clearly doing just fine without your teacher too, so don't give up, you definitely got this!!

Okay so I thought about this pretty much all afternoon and evening 😂 And I've picked a few that I think are good examples of different types of short fic, as well as being good fic. And also came up with silly category names because I could.

(I'm afraid some of these will be a little out of your fandom wheelhouse, but I do think they're good examples so I hope that's alright 🙈)

The wanky drabble

I learned this one from @revakah, who's still the master of 100-word-witchcraft in my books. Playing with formatting and throwing any concept of sentence structure out the window in favour of pure unadulterated vibes; and somehow winding up with a story that spans way, way more time and feelings than it should be able to. Two of Rev's I particularly like for that:

Blank Space (100 words - Sylvie & Mobius - Loki Series - Sads ahoy)

Grounded (100 words - Kaladin/Dalinar - the Stormlight Archive - Fucking Hot ahoy)

That One Scene

This is probably my own favourite and most frequent sort of ficlet / short... where you take the established world/canon and either situate readers with the summary itself, or with like one or two quick lines-- and write literally just that one single scene or idea and nothing. else. Leave the finer details of exactly how they got there and what happens after up to the reader's imagination. If those are even relevant, they might not be 😂 I love these cause they're so flexible-- they can be introspective, they can be kind of a character study or a What If, they can leave people pondering implications and going ..oh, they can be a quick n dirty little smut scene or powerfully moving angst or pure happy-making fluff; or any combination of the above.

A universe all its own by @jewelliffer (647 words - Thranto - So Fluffy I'm gonna Die)

Unending by saisei (405 words - SGA vegas!Sheppard/Todd the Wraith - impossible levels of characterization, canon backstory, and post-canon story for that many words)

In time by me (200 words - SGA one-sided Sheppard/Todd the Wraith - I'm just really proud of how creepy and not-quite-human I managed to make this Todd POV one)

Longfic speedrun

For when you have the idea for a long fic but don't actually want to write the whole thing. Instead, take the most important, core bits of key moments over time, and just... don't write the rest. It has a particular feel to it that's kind of hard to describe, but they tend to leave me feeling a little stunned. Because I only read one or two thousand words, but somehow they've beamed a year's or a decade's worth of story time directly into my brain.

The Taste of Him by @draculard (~2.5k - NightThrawn with background/nonromantic Thrawn/Palpatine - okay yes this is on the longer side for a short fic BUT in my defense it's incredible and oh yeah OW heartbreaking)

Still there is my attempt at a slowburn speedrun (~1.3k - more SGA - vegas!McShep post canon)
