The wedding was with about 100 people there (Maybe slightly over, who's really counting)
The whole grid came. + Sebastian came but didn't RSVP until the last possible minute.
Christian, Geri, and most of the engineers from RBR ended up coming (ex. GP, Calum, Jonathan, and Hannah), those who weren't able to make it sent Max their congratulations
Lewis ended up sitting on Y/N’s side of the aisle instead of Max’s.
Y/N was nervous to walk down the aisle but talking to Sophie helped calm her down
“Sophie,” Y/N said to her as they walked hand in hand before the music started playing for her to walk down the aisle. “I just want to thank you. Thank you for raising Max the way that you did, and being there for him when Nico came into his life.”
You could see that Sophie was starting to tear up a bit. “My son loves you, and my grandson too. I couldn’t have asked for a better wife to my son even if I had a hand in choosing her myself.”
Victoria ends up being Y/N's Maid of Honor
Max did end up crying when Y/N came walking down the aisle
Her dress was custom-made, and she wore ivory instead of the traditional white
Daniel tried to joke that he lost the rings when the officiant asked for them. Max ended up just laughing before Daniel slipped them into his hand.
There is a section of Y/N's wedding vows to Nico
Nico ended up crying into the skirt of her dress not wanting to let go of her during the rest of the ceremony
Max ends up spending the first few moments of his vows stumbling over his words before reaching for Y/N's hand, needing to feel her to ground him back to just her
Lando offers to DJ the wedding reception as his wedding present, and he would have if Martin hadn't already agreed to do it months before
Daniel made the best best man speech known to man with just the right amount of jokes. His speech ended with,
"But I digress, Y/N, you make Max so happy and have become an integral part of his family. I hope Max, that you know how lucky you are to have her in your life." Daniel lifted his champagne glass. "To many more years for the two of you, to Mr. and Mrs. Verstappen."
Victoria kept her Maid of Honor speech rather short but welcomed you into the family and joked with Max that if he screwed up she got to keep you in the divorce
Max laughed before giving Y/N a questionable look as if to say, Something I don't know about? Before breaking out into a smile knowing that Victoria is joking
Max quickly interjected, "I don't plan on letting that happen." before lifting her hand and lightly kissing the back of it
Everyone drank from their glasses and Nico and Victoria's boys got glasses of sparkling apple cider
Nico ends up cutting in during Max and Y/N's first dance
On the cake topper, the groom is in a race suit instead of a tux
Y/N ends up shoving Max's face into the wedding cake after it was cut
Halfway through the evening, Daniel ended up stealing the photographer's camera and started taking candid photos of everyone
Max and Y/N leave the day after the wedding, Nico staying with Sophie until both you and Max get back from you're honeymoon

just reread all ur brudick fics (all the kudos, u have no idea how often i reread courage of stars specifically) but i just! EMOTIONS! idk if u intended this but there’s an undercurrent of everyone assuming batman (& by extension bruce himself) is hard enough to get along with & even like, so as a romantic partner he’d be awful. except for dick, who (to everyone’s bafflement) actually enjoys bruce’s company along with genuinely loving him & AHHH i love how u write them sm 😭😭❤️❤️

I do think Dick and Bruce’s relationship is pretty much impossible for anyone else to replicate with Bruce (and therefore also difficult for other characters to understand!). If I may take this excuse to meta and drown in all of my BruDick feels for a minute—

And I think Dick is one of the few people who can truly say “you don’t know him like I do” when it comes to Bruce. They have this long history of learning and growing together which means Dick gets Bruce in a way that others don’t. And even if he feels distanced from Bruce:

And the crux of it all is that even if Dick might like a little something here and there, he doesn’t actually need anything from Bruce to love him as deeply as he does. He’ll love him anyway. He’ll be by Bruce’s side, no matter what, even if other people (including Bruce) try to change his mind.

Group Stage Stats and Standings
With two out of three rounds of the group stage complete, here's a summary of where things currently stand. Remember, there are two ways to qualify for the championship bracket - winning a group (10 characters), and having the most total votes without winning a group (6 characters). By receiving enough votes, any character in the tournament could still technically qualify for one of the six wildcard slots.
First, these tables show standings by group. Purple indicates the group leader (by number of wins; ties broken by number of votes) and red indicates a character who has been locked out of winning their group. Note that since Rain Flaherty and Lucas in Group A have been in three matches rather than two, their vote totals are multiplied by 2/3 to allow a fair comparison.
Next are standings by total number of votes. Group leaders are in purple, and the leaders for the six wildcard championship slots are in blue.
The last batch of group stage polls will go up later this week. Until then, if you're interested in more stats, I've put them beneath the cut because there are Many.
The main reason I decided to have this tournament start with a group stage is that I think it's fairer to the characters (more on that later), but I'd be lying if I denied that More Stats was also a contributing factor. To begin with, here are the total number of votes by group (Group A adjusted as noted earlier):

In two groups, the current group leader and the group member with the most votes are not the same:

All four characters are currently set to advance to the championship bracket - Gaueko and Davepeta as group winners, and Penny and Carla via wildcard slots.
Something interesting I noticed the other day is that the nine top-ranked characters by vote count all got there in part by facing each other:
In Group H, Dainix (#1) faced Zhusen (#2) in the first round and White Chain (#5) in the second round
In Group B, Lucy Marlowe (#4) faced Eddie Kaspbrak (#5) in the first round
In Group J, Carla Rutten (#6) faced Davepeta (#9) in the first round
In Group F, Penny Spender (#7) faced Gaueko (#8) in the second round
These are the same five matchups that had both the most votes and the most notes. All five of them were reblogged by at least one of their characters' creators. And all but one of the nine characters received more votes - often several times more - facing their highest-ranked opponent than facing their lowest-ranked opponent:
Lucy Marlowe - 8.3x (1,065 vs 128)
Davepeta - 4.1x (598 vs 145)
Gaueko - 2.3x (522 vs 225)
Zhusen - 2.3x (1,673 vs 724)
Eddie Kaspbrak - 2.1x (804 vs 375)
Dainix - 2.1x (1,999 vs 946)
Penny Spender - 1.3x (463 vs 347)

This seems to indicate popular characters actually benefit from facing each other, especially taking into account that the championship bracket will be seeded by total number of votes. Of the six characters currently holding a wildcard qualification slot, five of them are ranked in the top seven qualifiers overall.
On the flip side, these are the characters with the most nominations who don't currently qualify for the championship:
Cheryl (Group E) - 8
Rain Flaherty (Group A) - 8
Teige Carroll (Group I) - 7
Lucas (Group A) - 6
Of the fourteen characters who received five or more nominations, ten are currently slated to advance. The remaining six current qualifiers received either three or four nominations each.
These characters have received the most votes so far without winning a match:
Merlow the Rose (Group G) - 262
Cheryl (Group E) - 244
Rosemaster (Group D) - 235
And these are the characters who have the fewest votes while winning both of their matches:
Yoshi (Group I) - 156
Luck (Group A) - 179
Vaarsuvius (Group I) - 200
Elle Argent (Group A) - 285
Group A and Group I are the only groups with two undefeated characters who will face off in the final round, and the only groups in which number of votes had to be used as a tiebreaker to determine the current group leader.
Vaarsuvius has the lowest number of votes of any character currently winning their group. While there's only a difference of 85 votes between Elle Argent and Vaarsuvius, there are quite a few characters between them - Elle is ranked 15th, while V is ranked 27th. V is the only character currently slated to advance over other characters with more votes.
One of the dangers of a round-robin format is a match in the final round between two characters with a 0-2 record, both of whom have already been locked out of winning their group. That will only happen once here, between Teige Carroll and Eri McCure in Group I.
Finally, here's a piece of etymology I learned while preparing for the tournament: The "robin" in "round robin" has nothing to do with the bird or with the English given name. Instead, the term originated from the French phrase "ruban rond," meaning "round ribbon," but over time "ruban/ribbon" was idiomized to "robin."

🟦Midnight ~10k .E. “Alphas are for fucking and pheromones,” Louis said during their first conversation, when he was moving into the building and Harry offered to help haul boxes up the stairs. “I’m perfectly capable of carrying my own groceries.” Louis relented when his Omega friend Zayn intervened and asked if he was also capable of moving his couch by himself. All Harry’d wanted to do was be a good neighbor. Now, here he is, half a year later, balls deep and four months into a no strings attached, sex only situation with the Omega of his dreams. He’s still not sure how it happened.

It's been a weird year for me w/r/t fic writing! I wrote my longest fic so far by very much a lot. It was a labor of love and for most of the 8ish months I was writing it, I was feeling very down about my skills and writing in general, but I was having fun with turning New Girl into a larry fic, so I carried on, and I came out the other side ok I guess?
I modded our yearly @wankersday fest and the @harryshouseficfest despite promising myself I'd only do wankfest, and the stress of it solidified that decision lol. No more modding for me (except wankfest).
I wrote 9 fics this year, the lowest number of fics per year since my first year writing, and I posted my first ever fic in October and still wrote 5 fics that year. 6 of my 9 fics this year were for fests. That's more pressure than I usually like to put on myself, but I survived, and here's what my year looked like:

Remember Me Before You my New Girl AU, more than twice as long as the next longest thing I've written, it's really just a love letter to the show. Posting it as a WIP while I finished the last bit was daunting because it's the first time I've done a WIP that wasn't complete before I started posting, but it was so fun! The comments fueled me and I loved chatting with you guys as it was going. Some of you were already New Girl fans, some hadn't seen the show, some starting watching it because of my fic??? it was an experience!
Work you are least proud of (and why):
Uh oh, it’s Magic (when I’m with you) for the @1dastroficfest. It was tough to get started and I think I tried like 4 different ideas for that prompt (The Hermit tarot card), but then Megan @homosociallyyours was like 'what if you took it very literally' and thankfully that worked! This was the first time I've ever been legitimately worried about meeting a deadline.
A favorite excerpt of your writing:
I'm never any good at picking snippets. I usually ask Nic @louandhazaf to assist, but this is part of a snippet I posted earlier this year, so... this is from Just Pretend, my older, divorced larry meet and decide to fake a relationship for their kids fic for @1dsilverfoxfest
According to his mom, he started flirting at two days old, and he’s only gotten better over the last forty-five years. Harry's had about that long to earn a doctorate in dimples. He wields them as he moves closer, pressing his chest against Louis’ palm and lifting his left hand to cradle Louis’ jaw. Cool despite the heat they’ve borrowed from his body, the touch of Harry's rings sends a shiver down Louis’ spine. His heart beats harder as he leans in.
Louis’s never been a fan of tequila, but the sweet, peppery liquor is hardly perceptible under the taste of lime on Harry's tongue and the swirling, spicy scent of his sweat, deodorant and cologne. Three in the morning is only marginally cooler than midday and after working all night, Louis is damp with sweat and beer and he smells like it. Thankfully, Harry doesn’t seem to mind. He cups the side of Louis’ neck, fingertips toying with the ends of Louis’ silver hair, tickling and sending a thrill through him as he inches closer.
Grabbing hold of Harry's hips, Louis shifts his stance, stepping one foot between Harry's and sliding a hand around to splay across his lower back under the blousy hem of his half-buttoned shirt. Tilting his head, their noses bump, and Harry pulls back, wet lips parted, panting. Louis hardly has time to breathe before Harry guides him into another kiss, holding him so tightly that his forearm presses between Louis’ shoulder blades while his hand cups Louis’ neck.
Hunching over Louis, his other hand tight on his hip, Harry bends him backwards—dipping him as if they were dancing—and Louis gasps into Harry's mouth. Hungrily, Harry sucks kisses over Louis’ jaw, down his neck to the hollow of his throat, dragging plush lips over the rough two-day beard Louis hasn’t bothered to shave before setting Louis back on his feet.

i can't pick one. i'm terrible at picking favorites! but i will say that every person who read rmby as a wip and commented as they went, you guys are the real mvps of my 2022 fic experience.
A time when writing was really, really hard:
all year. no joke. and i know it seems stupid to say because i've posted almost half a million words this year, but i struggled to enjoy writing for much of this year. deadlines really fuck with my head, so i'm hoping to avoid those next year
A scene or character you wrote that surprised you:
my entire fic for @wankersday in may. it's my first ever time writing girl!direction so i was very nervous and the whole thing surprised me while i was writing it and it continues to surprise me whenever i remember it exists
How did you grow as a writer this year:
idk man. i wrote a kid fic! and i wrote girl!direction. so that's 2 never before things in 2022
How do you hope to grow next year:
tbh i hope to grow in my ability to experience fomo and live with it. i hope to continue to strengthen my ability to say no lol. i'm only planning on writing for wankfest this year, so who knows what'll happen
Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc):
nic @louandhazaf is always in this spot. she's my #1, my best friend, the other half of my brain, and the only reason i write

i am going back to school in january, so fic writing is being bumped way down the list of my priorities for 2023. like i said above, i only plan to write for @wankersday in may, but tbh idk if i'll be able to. Other than that, I’m looking forward to recording @roseanddaggerpodcast

written for day 3 of august for @wolfstarmicrofic prompt “hot”

“Merlin, it’s hot.” Remus says, wiping his forehead, hand coming away slick with sweat.
“Yeah, 'cause’ I’m out here.” Sirius replies, with a classic response. He smirks and looks at Remus knowingly.
Remus chuckles, but rolls his eyes. He’s trying to plant some flowers in the flower box outside the window of their flat, but with Sirius right there, it’s making it hard for him to concentrate.
“Sirius dear, if you’re just gonna stand there, you might as well hand me the mini gardening hoe please.” Remus says
Sirius walks over and shimmies into Remus' hands. Remus looked confused at first, but then he realized Sirius's little joke.
He lets out an exasperated sigh, and pushes Sirius away, going to grab the actual tool. Sirius whines at the loss of contact.
“You know, if you maybe, I don’t know, helped, we could be back inside already.
“But there’s no fun in being helpful,” Sirus says, “but there’s a lot of fun in messing with you.” Sirius says, playfully punching Remus in the shoulder.
“Siri, if you keep this up I’m gonna lock you outside when I’m done.” Remus threatens, trying to just finish planting the seeds. This whole project should have been done about 30 minutes ago, but someone can’t seem to cooperate and keep away from Remus. Not that Remus is comparing, but he’s trying to work.
“Fine, fine, what do you need?” Sirius asks, attempting to help. However, he mutters ‘can never have a bit of fun, can I?’
Remus hears, and wanks Sirius to him. They meet face to face, almost close enough to kiss, but Remus will never let him. “Sirius, you’re a grown adult. Hush up and come help.” He lets Sirius go, but not without slapping his arse playfully.
Sirius stumbles, shocked because never, ever, in their dating and married life has Moony ever slapped his ass like that. Well, except if they’re playing in bed, but that’s totally different.
Sirius is shocked, and if the look on Remus’s face is any indication, Remus is too.
“Moooy, moony, what had gotten into you? Slapping my ass? That’s new, you naughty little boy.” Sirius says, mocking him. He wags his finger at him while speaking.
“Naughty?! Sirius, look at yourself.” Sirius was dressed in his boxers and cropped band tee shirt.
“What, you can’t blame me! It feels like a 100 degrees out here!”
“Yeah, well, you can at least put on some shorts for my sake.” Remus replies, picking up the seeds and sprinkling them in, and moving soil back over the seeds, covering them.
“Your sake,?” Sirius chides, “why shouldn’t it be mine? To be decent and not expose myself to the neighbours.” He says, waving his hand around to the acres and acres of land, unironically, without neighbours. “Or is my Moony getting hot seeing me without any shorts?” He says tauntingly.
Remus can feel the blush creeping up his neck and his hands slow down over the soil. He sets down the tools and wipes his hands on his dirty overalls. He looks Sirius directly in the eye and states calmly, “and if it was?”
Sirius looks him straight back in the eye and says totally serious, “I’m not so depraved and desperate to get it out out here, so what do you say Moons, the bedroom, in…30 seconds?”
Before he even finishes his sentence, Remus breaks out in a run and starts undoing the buttons on his overalls on the way to the room, not wanting to wait a minute more.

Later, Sirius and Remus are all hot and sweaty for a different reason.

Wait ppl are assuming that Lucy’s pregnant because she went to the hospital??? My brain just assumed it had something to do with Melissa’s previous insta stories with her face having some drops of what it looks like blood 😅
I don’t think it’s a lot of people. It just takes one person to say something and it spreads around. I think it’s a very small theory and even an unpopular one at that. Most people me included don’t want her to be pregnant right now.
And I am 100% with you, that’s what I figured too! I didn’t even think of pregnancy lol. I do think she got into some kind of fight?? Maybe not. Idk. But also what happens to her happens in 604 and the carries on into 605 so…
I don’t know I can’t wait for S6!

Today’s Meals (09/27/23)

Fire dinner, garbage dessert. Fasted for 19 hrs today which is so good!! Went home and had the first meal. The dip for my carrots and cucumbers was rlly good, just Greek yogurt, low cal Mayo, lemon juice + seasonings. 25 cal per tbsp. And then the stupid fucking toast. Once again, food disappoints me. I don’t even know why I bother. If I’m gonna spend cals it should at least be on stuff I like. Now I know for next time.

Also me: *plans to work some more tomorrow because it's the only time I can actually work on stuff that people are depending on...also I'm 66 completed cases away from having 3 entries into a raffle for a $100 Amazon gift card*
Me: Why do I do this to myself?
Paycheck: You know I've got like 18.5 hours of OT in me right now right? Plus the 3.5 you plan to work tomorrow which brings the total to 22 hours of OT. And overtime's time and a half so that means that's 22 hours of 27.5 dollars an hour bringing that to an extra 605 dollars to your paycheck before taxes.
Me: Oh right...money.
Paycheck: I do make the world go round!

Babe and His K-Pop Albums-Baberoe/OC
Summary: Babe is in desperate need of the new Stray Kids album.

It was a Friday, school had just ended and Babe was skipping through the student parking lot.
As he saw the familiar small, old, green SUV that he adored so much he got in.
"Hey guys." Babe set his backpack next to him and his tote bag with all his K-pop binders next to it before giving Graham and Gene both a kiss on the cheek.
"How was your day, Mon Amour's?" Gene asked as he put the car in reverse and began their drive out of the school.
"Good, what about you Babe?" Graham said turning to look at the red head.
"Well it was good actually, I got payed my over time today from Little Caesar's. I know I already told you both a 100 times today already but the new Stray Kids album is so good." Babe buzzed with excitement.
If there was anything that made Babe weak in the knees besides Gene and Graham, it was Stray Kids. Babe had been a devoted K-pop stan since he was in middle school. While it was only progressing.
Because, of how his mom is about being Catholic and all Babe had his K-pop shelf at Genes and it was ever growing.
Every night the members of Stray Kids, Blackpink. (G)I-dle, and TXT watched him sleep.
But, hey Gene was okay with that as long as Babe had somewhere to nerd out and feel safe about his interests.
"Are we going to Barnes and Noble, or Target first?" Gene asked as they turned onto the road infront of the school.
"Barnes and Noble they have the album with exclusive photo cards and I know they have the Felix digipack in stock too." Babe smiled. He was so excited to buy the new album and see who he pulled.
Everyday, though Graham and Gene were still fighting in the trenches for Babes attention over his bias's.
Babe held both of the boys hands as he led them straight to the music section at Barnes and Noble. As he saw the small cardboard display of the new album. Babe let go of their hands running over and picking up two albums and the Felix digipack.
"Isn't he so pretty!?" Babe giggled as he held the Felix album next to him and pretended to kiss it.
"One day, Babe will love us as much as he loves Felix." Graham teased him as he started flipping through some vinyls.
"But I do," Babe smiled kissing the curly haired boys cheek and giving Gene a hug, "if you guys were in Stray Kids I'd buy all the digipack's and photo cards in the world."
"Do you remember when George and Daisy made everyone photo cards of themselves." Gene giggled as they walked to the checkout.
"Never forget," Graham held up the phone with the picture of Babe, Gene and himself behind his clear phone case.
When they were back in the car Babe set the albums on the armrest. Then he rubbed his hands together and shut his eyes.
He always did this before he opened his albums, a way to manifest to himself to pull his bias.
"Okay, moment of truth." Babe opened the album and flipped through the pages before he saw the three photo cards. One Felix, one Lee Know, and Changbin.

Plethora's Pleasant-mas Advent Calendar: Day 22

The Master frowned at the crowded shop, pouting that even with ordering ahead the two of you had to wait. Rubbing soothing circles against his palm, taking advantage of your intertwined hands. Trying to keep him calm as you did not want to deal with him being grumpy later when the paparazzi caught up to the two of you. His PR team had been carefully crafting this plan for weeks. Wanting to get caught up in the buzz around the holiday cups to show that Harold Saxon was just a normal man like anyone else. You had thought that the obsessive need of his to make sure that the public wanted to vote for him beyond what the Archangel network was doing was odd but you let him have his way. It didn’t hurt to have his name in the back of casual voter’s minds, to gain more support from party leaders with the clamoring of the public.
“Remind me to yell at my PR team later for choosing the most popular Starbucks in the whole of London,” he grumbled to you.
“Will do,” you whispered back.
Already longing for your drink, it was a surprisingly nice day out so you had decided to indulge yourself and order a cold drink full of sugar and caffeine. It meant that you were not going to have one of the holiday cups but you figured that it could allow the public to decide on their own if you had dragged him out or if he wanted the cup himself. Either way, humanity was biased towards the answer they already liked in their head. As the crowd shifted as orders were called. The Master leading the two of you closer to the front to wait impatiently. You tried to distract him from showing his impatience by asking about the plans for the walk, how the campaign was going and what he thought should be done next. He certainly knew what you were doing but played into your efforts. A few people seemed to recognize him but held back from interrupting the two of you. RIghtfully assuming that this really wasn’t the palace to ask to talk to him, or being doubtful that they were correct in their identification.
His fake name being called only served to confirm what those people had been thinking. A teen girl catching his attention was a soft question as you stepped forward to grab your drinks. You turned back in time to hand his cup over to him as he agreed to a picture with the awestruck girl. Hiding your smile at her flushed face as you took a sip. She was rightfully flustered by his voice. It was hypnotic. After she thanked him shyly for the picture he seemed to be struck by inspiration.
Grabbing over 100 pounds from his pocket to hand over to a bewildered worker placing another drink down.
“Here, I’m paying for however many orders this covers. Pay it forward and all that,” he joked with an alluring smile.
Reaching for another handful of pounds to shove into the tip jar before he took your hand and pulled you along with him out of the store. Not forcing his way past the gathering of people but weaving in and out around them. Letting out a relieved sigh when the sidewalk was not as closely crowded as the store had been.
After a sip of his drink he looked over at yours, mischief alight in his eyes. Leaning over to steal a sip before you could protest.
“Well that’s just not fair, your drink is much better than mine!”

Art in The Good Fight (2017-2022) - Part 2
part 1 here:
this part 2 is mostly about s6, because i think you can really track what the art is doing for story and character. so, let's get into it!!
still mad the new partner Ri'Chard took away this beauty, but they're forgiven for 603's art history references.
in the scene with the Dr, Diane mentions Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, originally attributed to Pieter Bruegel the Elder (oil on canvas, c. 1560). it's in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels.
this is absolutely fascinating, because the composition of the painting is original—to give prominence to the 'low' subject matter, being the agricultural figure, rather than Icarus, to whom Diane is drawn. this is called 'Mannerist inversion' (yes i screamed, i'm a nerd).
this piece is brilliantly used this ep. Icarus, small, drowns unnoticed by everyone else. death happens all the time, and we move on. i'm reminded of Diane's sane little corner. the world is oblivious to the tragedy of hubris, concerned only with themselves. seems apocalyptic...
which leads me to my next point. behind the Dr is a Jean Andran engraving of a painting called Winter, part of a Seasons series now in the Louvre by Nicolas Poussin from the 1660s. and what does it depict? the flood. 100% premonition of impending death.
i love that *someone* has done their NY homework and seen that Guggenheim Hilma af Klint exhibit (i am not jealous at all), because also in the Dr's office is af Klint's Tree of Knowledge, No. 5 (Kunskapens träd, nr 5), from the 1915 W Series.
for various reasons, af Klint was for a long time ignored in favour of Kandinsky, Mondrian, Kupka etc in modern Western nonrepresentational art (also her queerness 🍵). her work has two overlapping levels, one biographical and one relating to the history of humanity.
the Tree of Knowledge series is part of her series of 193 Paintings for the Temple, which was af Klint's vision for the future as given to her by a spiritual medium, to depict 'the immortal aspects of man'. hence, she uses iconography from Christianity and Hinduism.
each piece in the Tree of Knowledge series is a variation on a theme, a tree with a heart-shaped crown. and there's a progression to the biblical allusion to Genesis symbolising innocence to fall from Grace, but there are also organic forms and ornate details.
the Tree of Knowledge (of Good and Evil) is usually paired with the
symbol of the Tree of Life, and in af Klint's work, signals binaries melding into unity. but the tree also signals Buddhism (the fig tree), the Tau/life force, the Arasa Maram in Hinduism.
the colours have meaning, yellow for female and blue for male. put them together and it becomes green, and the colours have become purer. this is No. 5, so the white radiations that were pale rose-coloured in No. 4 are now inverted.
af Klint probably knew Rudolf Steiner's colour meanings—yellow as spirit, blue as soul. green as the lifeless image of the living, peach-blossom the living image of the soul. white as the soul's image of the spirit, black as the spiritual image of the lifeless (cf swans).
the 12 sections in the top lotus leaf crown seem to represent the zodiac, months. also, there's a multi-coloured, lobed 'cross' in the small box middle-right, which maybe suggests the first awakening of the higher self?? compare this to the unity of colourful two birds in the bottom circle. there's a lot to be said about how this art represents how humans navigate their smallness in the world.
as seen on 604 in Diane's office, this is Street Musicians, by the American artist Norman Lewis (oil on canvas, 1948). part of the post-war movement.
from 605, i have identified some of the pieces Ri'Chard chose for the office, and they were clearly chosen for reasons. (unfortunately i couldn't find Liz's but i love the home decor and don't doubt this was also carefully chosen.)
this is by Kara Walker, known for room-size tableaux of black cut-paper silhouettes. her work illustrates the origins & legacy of slavery in the American South. i suspect there's a Civil War reference too. the 1994 piece riffs on Gone With The Wind (MOMA).
i really love this one. this is Holy Mountain II by Horace Pippin, a self-taught artist post WW1. he was influenced by Edward Hicks, a Quaker minister who painted interpretations of Isaiah’s biblical prophecy of world peace and harmony in nature (Peaceable Kingdom, c 1830-32).
though the gatherings seem tranquil, the Holy Mountain series is very dark. poppies, soldiers, grave markers, a limp body hanging from a tree... Holy Mountain I refers to D-Day, Holy Mountain II to Pearl Harbor Day, & Holy Mountain III (Smithsonian) to Nagasaki.
so there are parallels between WW1/Civil War, but it is also very Eden-esque. i rather like that the pastoral figure in a white dress with the yellow cheetah is the centre focus. all very biblical, which fits right in with Ri'Chard's style. Pippin himself stated that,
"'Holy Mountain' came to my mind because the whole world is in such trouble, and in reading the Bible (Isaiah 11:6) it says that there will be peace in the land. If a man knows nothing but hard times he will paint them, for he must be true to himself, but even that man may have a dream, an ideal and 'Holy Mountain' is my answer to such dreaming."
i was thinking about how much gold Ri'Chard brought into the office in the context of his Brand™ (1 & 2 old decor, 3 & 4 new, but none identified yet oop)
there are other etchings in the Dr's office: top: 'Rotherhithe' by James McNeill Whistler from the Thames Set (1860, V&A) bottom: 'Clearing a wreck on the north coast of Cornwall' by Thomas Rowlandson (c 1809-1822, British Museum).
Dr Dude likes ships that's all i can say 🤷♀️ but actually i think there's something interesting about all the Flood references in the Dr's office, like Diane is drowning. possibly, there's a subtle allusion to a very famous painting, Le Radeau de la Méduse, by Théodore Géricault (1818-19, oil on canvas, Louvre).
this is an icon of French Romanticism, depicting the aftermath of the wreck of the French naval frigate Méduse, which ran aground off the coast of what is now Mauritania on 2 July 1816. what's so interesting about this painting is that it presents ordinary people, rather than heroes, reacting to the unfolding drama. as Christine Riding says, the painting represents,
"the fallacy of hope and pointless suffering, and at worst, the basic human instinct to survive, which had superseded all moral considerations and plunged civilised man into barbarism."
by 607, Diane's office art has changed to a piece called Three Tumblers by Daniel Clarke (2018), perhaps a reference to her revolving office bar. also did we notice her flower obsession has dulled a little? but there are still orchids all around the office. i'll leave you to google the meaning of the original Greek word 👀
elsewhere in the office, FIRES abound on the digital screen in the conference room. flood, fire…and?
where there's a mansion, there's sure to be art (609): Asher Brown Durand, Landscape—Scene from "Thanatopsis" (1850, Met); Max Ferdinand Bredt, In the Courtyard of the Harem; John Frederick Lewis, Intercepted Correspondence (1869).
in 609 when same sex marriage is overturned (and Christine Baranski's acting chops is on full show with her shocked face), the image on the tv screen is Witch burning in Regenstein, Saxony-Anhalt, 1555. It's a wood engraving after an original printed on flyleaf (Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg).
frankly there's a lot of misinformation about witch trials, not least of which is that they happened a lot later than most people think (ie. not the medieval period). the early modern period 16-17th centuries were the height of the European witchcraft trials.
and it was an ongoing, systematic persecution that resulted from the targetting of Christian heretics and Jews throughout the 14th century, and gradually both the church and scholars became more and more obsessed with demonology. it was really about the 'other', the concern about the loss of a certain way of life.
Diane, of course, calls herself a wench, so i think it's interesting that her s6 arc eventuates with her heading up a female-only law firm in DC working on women's rights and Roe v Wade. i dislike the way that the word 'witchhunt' is misappropriated like other historical terms in modern contexts, but it's probably fair to call the current backsliding on women's rights a witchhunt. so i love this double meaning.
finally, i wanted to return to how Diane's office art tracks her journey. the Surrealist art was the tone of the show throughout. but the violence seeped into the everyday and everyone just got used to it. hence the second painting is war (contrast the flowers).
but then Diane chooses to stop PT108. almost immediately, a bullet lands on the realist painting of a woman (where does she end up? in Washington DC fighting the good fight for women).
the violence doesn't end there. and then the office literally explodes & you can see a painting is off-centre. which seems like a good metaphor for where the world is at.
so yeah, the progression in Diane's office from Peony Girl to Post-War to a painted version of Chris is just chef's kiss. the way it tracks her psyche in s6? i'm obsessed.
