Okay, Hades 2!
Supergiantgames does it again. It’s still Early Access, but it has more polish and content than a lot of fully released games on its price point and higher. Of course, all this content would not matter if it wasn’t good. It’s good. From gameplay to voice acting to sound design to music to graphics and visual elements, Hades 2 is airtight. There’s one exception we’ll discuss, but otherwise, it’s incredibly well crafted.
So far, there’s only one instance in the game I can say needs some important improvements: The second phase of the Tartarus boss, Chronos, who is an end boss. Not in terms of difficulty, mind you, it’s in terms of visual clarity: There’s so many lights and particle effects that making out what’s up can be frustrating, especially when Chronos hits you anywhere from 20~ to 35 damage, or, you know, his 1000 damage practical instakill. The instakill is HEAVILY telegraphed and easy to deal with, almost trivial, but in the concerto of lights and fireworks, it’s possible to miss one or two seconds of Going To The Don’t Die space and getting mulched. That’s not a big problem, it’s just a user experience issue that you just internalize after a few tries and some short term frustration. What IS an issue is Chronos using the Liu Kang flying kick from midst an incomprehensible mishmash of light graphics and taking out 25 HP plus forcing you to reposition in a fight that’s quite lengthy and in a game that’s stingy with its HP.
They don’t need to meddle with his difficulty! They just need to make the second phase easier to parse. It’s a great fight otherwise.
On the Melinoë end of things, some boons and weapons feel like they could use a touch-up: The Torches let you keep shooting while you dodge and move (movement speed reduced), for example, and you NEED to keep shooting to activate Omega Attack which is what actually does damage. But it’s a big commitment because now your defense option is also doubly important as your main movement tool AND your i-frames. This is all really cool! Except the damage does not at all make up for it in a game where the Torches’ linear nature hurt it more than help it, as enemies don’t line up and instead go around each other or otherwise have specialized movement and attack options. The Axe, with its wide sweeps, does pretty much all the Torches want to do, with a lot more damage and less risk. The Aspects of the Torches would try to help: Moros can be nifty, but the ghosts the Moros Torches shoot are physical objects to each other, so they pile up and soon your shots just collide with each other and don’t reach the enemy. It’s a constant tug o’ war with detonating them with Special, which, again, fun, but you have to set up real Hellzone Grenades before they are truly damaging. Basically, a ton of effort for damage I can easily get more safely and easily with other Arms. Which I hope they address, because I like the Torches.
Hestia’s boon is a bit underwhelming, but that’s expected from the DoT build, those are always the hardest to balance. Dionysius in Hades 1 was really strong. Hestia here has potential but ultimately falls off hard because no matter how much you build, it always ticks at 40 per second. That’s very low DPS for Boons that otherwise add no Attack%. With Sister Blades, I can rack up 600 Scorch and it’s still better if I grab Aphrodite instead and do that much damage in a few attacks instead.
And you know what you are seeing here in these paragraphs? Very easily tweaked things in a game in Early Access by a developer known to deliver. I am not worried at all. This game kicks ass.

outer wilds is such an amazing game that is so hard to convince people to play because like
the entire game is based around how much you know about the game. the best way to play the game is to know absolutely nothing
#if you play it please do not look up anything about it!!!!#it's fucking GORGEOUS#it is a space puzzle game#where knowledge is based on progression#srsly it's designed such that anyone could beat the entire game fresh file in like <20 minutes. but you don't know how#and what's mindboggling about it is#it's pretty easy!!! for someone like me who is not very good with video games!! especially on controller!!!#it's funny it's heartbreaking it's literally one of my top games of all time now#storyline tier is up there with portal hades and celeste as far as OUGGHGHGHGGHH#also#it has nonbinary aliens!!!#please play it#the graphics are also astounding if your computer can handle them#and the physics is an awesome blend of accurate and inaccurate-enough-to-be-good-for-gameplay#it's just#there have been so many moments i'm sitting there in slightly stunned silence when i come across something#in the story that just... makes me go 'oh' and have an entire overwhelming Feeling#and the game gives you that space to understand#to grieve and to feel#god i also recommend getting the dlc#if only for the Moment you have when you realize#'it was there the WHOLE FUCKING TIME I WAS PLAYING THE MAIN GAME? === ADDITIONAL NOTES ===
About the archive - The files here were previously scattered across multiple websites and cloud storage services, making them difficult to acquire to those outside the small Guilty Gear archival group. I did my best to gather them all in one place. Please contact me if more files are discovered and I will add them to the archive upload on Archive.org.
The ripped mobile port files - The mobile version of Vastedge XT was only online and available to even download for around a year before the servers shut down. The two .OBB and one .APK file were ripped from the Android port of the game and are what Tillman ripped the animated assets, meshes, sounds, and textures from. A lot could not be ripped because it was stored on the game's servers. The encryption also makes ripping files from these difficult. It's possible there's more on them that was not able to be ripped.
Japanese file names - The original name of the .APK was パチスロ GG_com.dtechno.slotguilty.apk and had to be renamed to be compressed into a .ZIP folder. If the file runs into errors during launch/cracking attempts, try reverting the name. Likewise, the Japanese names of the videos could not be compressed and were also translated. There is a separate .TXT file within VXT VIDEOS that includes their original Japanese file names.
Duplicate concept art images - There were two archives of the concept art. One was hosted on e-hentai by Mister Guest and contained the full, uncropped, images. The second was from a folder that Volcanic had compiled. Volcanic's files were a higher resolution, but were cropped and missing some information Mister Guest's files had. I've included them both here as well as the files from a third archive where an anonymous user on Imgur had restored the colors on the character models to match how they look in the game itself.
Neon colors on the concept art - The neon sections on these character model sheets are temporary/placeholder colors and not how they appeared within the Vastedge XT game. Their true colors can be seen in the videos within the VXT VIDEOS folder or in the FIXED COLORS folder within VXT CONCEPT ART.
Dialog transcripts - What we know of Vastedge's story came from official story summaries posted by Arc System Works on the Guilty Gear websites. The dialog is exactly that: character dialog. There may be lines missing, that are inaccurate (due to typos), or other written/spoken parts of VXT not included. It may be possible to get this missing information from the videos in VXT VIDEOS or from other VXT video sources online.

From the Inquisitor to the Baptist: The Evolution of John Seed
Tumblr media
From the early stages of the development of a video game to the day it gets released, its gameplay, story, and characters usually go through many modifications. Far Cry 5 is no exception to this rule, and thanks to promotional images, trailers, interviews, official side material, and even deleted content still available in the game’s files, we can get a glimpse of what Hope County and its residents used to be like. John Seed, in particular, seems to have undergone quite a few alterations, both physical and moral.
In these posts, I will be listing and discussing all the changes I noticed in John and explaining why the man who used to be known as “The Inquisitor” isn’t identical to “The Baptist” we met in Far Cry 5.
All the sources and references indicated by the superscript numbers will be given in the last post.
Part 1: Physical appearance, clothes, and tattoos (concept art, promotional content, and side material)
What seems to be the earliest portrait of the Seed family is a piece of concept art that Lead Graphic Production Artist Nick Arnett shared on Instagram¹:
Tumblr media
As you can see, many things look different from what we are used to, from the Eden’s Gate cross (behind Joseph’s head) and logo (on the pulpit, with an eagle) to the Seed siblings’ outfits. The man on the right seems to be John, and he’s sporting a two-tone blue shirt that resembles the one he will end up wearing in the game, but he doesn’t have a vest. Instead of a belt, he has suspenders, and his pants and shoes look darker and more formal than his usual jeans and boots. He already has a beard and, while his hair is slicked back, as it is in the game, it’s a little longer. He doesn’t have any visible tattoos, but if you look closely, you’ll notice that he does have something on his hand: blood, running from his knuckles.
In May 2017, nine months before Far Cry 5 came out, the game was officially announced and a few promotional pictures were released, notably these two:
Tumblr media
But before that, we can see what John looked like at an even earlier stage of the game’s development, during the making of those two aforementioned pictures, thanks to early sketches and visuals shared by AmCo Studio³ and Fire Without Smoke⁴:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
John’s iconic vest and sunglasses have appeared, and while his shirt became white, it’s now partially unbuttoned and the sleeves are rolled up, which is how he wears it in the game. As for his hair, it’s shorter than it was in the first family portrait and looks more similar to his final design. We still don’t see any tattoos on his arms, but he has a watch.
In the final version of what I would call the “Last-Supper-like” images, John looks even more like himself, but there are still a few differences:
Tumblr media
Although they are not strictly identical to the ones he has in the game, he’s wearing sunglasses with blue lenses on his head. His shirt became blue again, his vest is striped, and he now has his “EG” (Eden’s Gate) earring and belt buckle, grey jeans, and bunker key around his neck. He’s also wearing a coat, but while, at first glance, it looks like the one we all know, the pattern isn’t the same; instead of planes, there are “EG” symbols on it. The buttons, however, are already golden and decorated with scales.
Tumblr media
In the pictures, especially the first one, the siblings are associated with symbols: a crown for Joseph (on his jacket and napkin), a sword for Jacob (on his music box), a pair of scales for John (on his coat’s buttons and in the bread/cake), and intoxicating Bliss flowers for Faith, a reference to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: Conquest, War, Famine, and Death, respectively, who. In John’s case, the scales could also be a nod to the fact he’s a lawyer. Indeed, scales are commonly used to symbolize justice.
This time, he finally has tattoos, and while some of them are the ones he will have in Far Cry 5, others are different. He already has small symbols on his fingers: an eye, a tongue, a hand with a drop of blood on it, a heart, a foot, a keyhole, and waves. The meaning of these symbols used to be a mystery to me, but it turns out they were inspired by Bible verses, specifically Proverbs 6:16-19⁵:
There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
The flames on his right wrist will be in the game as well, but here, they are smaller. This tattoo seems to have been taken directly from this illustration:
Tumblr media
It’s from a French (Breton, to be precise) collection of “Taolennoù Ar Mission” (literally “mission paintings” in Breton) by François-Marie Balanant, who was a priest, and it depicts a human soul being afflicted by the seven deadly sins⁶. “Taolennoù” were created in Brittany in the sixteenth century by the Catholic clergy in an effort to make religion more accessible to the faithful, some of whom were illiterate, with the help of drawings.
This particular image can be found on the Wikipedia page dedicated to the seven deadly sins⁷, which seems to have been the primary source of information and inspiration for several of John’s tattoos.
Clearly, the angelic figure with the dove, on his right hand, also directly comes from the drawing (upper left corner). This tattoo will later be redesigned and decorate the inner face of his left forearm.
As explained on Wikipedia, there used to be eight mortal sins, and their Latin names were:
Gula (Gluttony)
Luxuria (Lust)
Avaritia (Greed)
Tristitia (Sorrow)
Ira (Wrath)
Acedia (Sloth)
Vanagloria (Vainglory)
Superbia (Pride)
Tristitia and Acedia would later be combined, as well as Vanagloria and Superbia.
In the two promotional pictures, John has seven of these sins (except Acedia) tattooed on his left hand, as he does in Far Cry 5.
John also has letters on his fingers, but while, in the game, they spell “E-D-E-N” and “G-A-T-E”, here, we see G, G, S, E, W, P, and L, most likely the first letter of each deadly sin in English.
Tumblr media
On his chest, instead of a scar and the mutilated word “SLOTH”, he has a tattoo. We see two crossed rifles, the number seven in tally marks (probably yet another reference to the deadly sins), what seems to be the words “Bros & Sis” above the design, and what probably is “Til Death” under it. It looks like an infantry tattoo, very similar to the example included below (center) by tattoo artist Garrett Tankersley, known as tat2garrett on Instagram⁸:
Tumblr media
Finally, in one of the images, John is holding a tattoo machine. In the other, he’s holding a revolver. In the game, however, this weapon is nowhere to be seen.
Even though he will never use it in Far Cry 5, John was represented by this gun again on one of the game’s old official websites⁹:
Tumblr media
At the time, as you can see, his title was also “The Inquisitor” instead of “The Baptist”.
On the PlayAsia blog, on a page dedicated to Far Cry 5, short information sheets about a few of the game’s characters were posted¹⁰. They look official, but since I have only ever seen them on this website, which was not created by Ubisoft, their origin and therefore the accuracy of the information they give are uncertain.
Tumblr media
While most of what the picture says is either true (blue eyes, brown hair) or plausible (his height), John mathematically can’t be only 32 years old because he was already working as a lawyer about ten years before the events of the game, which is set in 2018. According to my research, it takes 7 years after graduating high school to become a licensed lawyer in the United States. In 2008, John couldn’t be younger than 18+7=25 years old, so it’s impossible for him to have been born after 1983. He could have skipped grades, but since this is never mentioned anywhere, I assume he didn’t and that he’s in fact older than 32 in Far Cry 5.
It’s possible, however, that he really was supposed to be 32 years old when the picture was made but that his backstory (and consequently his age) was then modified.
In the novel Far Cry Absolution, a few details are given about John’s appearance. For example, on page 6:
He was ten years older than [Mary May] and near six foot with brown hair and a beard that covered the lower half of his face.
Mary May is 29 (almost 30) in the novel, which makes John approximately 39 or 40 years old in the book. This age is more plausible, I think.
Then, on page 31:
John Seed, the younger brother of The Father, slighter in build, but cut from the same cloth. Both bearded and tattooed, and both with those all-seeing eyes that seemed to search through the dark with a kind of nocturnal prowess.
This isn’t the only time in the novel that John’s gaze is described as intense. The word “predatory” is even used on page 145.
Interestingly, and despite the fact it’s absent from Far Cry 5, the gun seen in his hand in one of the promotional pictures is mentioned in Absolution as well. It’s described as “a large revolver” on page 31 and as a “big magnum revolver” on page 57. He also uses a rifle “with a wood stock and bolt-action lever” (page 48) at one point, but this weapon isn’t in the game either.
Overall, aside from this detail, his physical description in the book is rather consistent with what we see in the game. And in this official picture posted in January 2018 to promote the book¹¹, he apparently looks the same as he does in Far Cry 5.
Tumblr media
In the live-action short film Inside Eden’s Gate¹², Joseph is the only member of the Seed family who is played by the actor who also plays him in Far Cry 5, Greg Bryk. In the game, while John is played by Seamus Dever, in the movie, it’s another actor named Rob Evors who was cast in the role. His voice and face obviously don’t sound and look exactly like John’s, so these differences are not significant.
Tumblr media
His outfit, however, has gone through several changes. I don’t know if the design was deliberately altered or if the clothes Rob Evors has in the film simply are the closest real-life equivalent to the ones John is wearing in the promotional pictures that the movie’s costume designers could get their hands on. Like in the development sketches for the “Last-Supper-like” images, his shirt is light-colored (but still blue, apparently) and he’s wearing his sunglasses normally, not on his head. They don’t seem to have blue lenses, but again, maybe the team could only find “regular” sunglasses. He has his Eden’s Gage belt buckle and earring, but instead of being grey, his coat, vest, pants, and shoes are brown/beige. The coat is decorated with “EG” logos, exactly like the one John is wearing in the promotional pictures, but lighter in color.
As for his tattoos, they are identical to the “old” ones we’ve seen so far, but two more are visible: the pair of scales on the side of his thumb and the snake (from the Taolennoù Ar Mission again, but uncoiled), which represents Envy, around his left wrist. These two new tattoos will be part of John’s final design in the game.
Tumblr media
There’s another one between the snake and his watch, but it’s simply one of Rob Evors’¹³.
In the film, John’s tattoos were actually hand-painted¹⁴. Here’s a better look a them, from Makeup Artist Casey Lynn Stuckey’s Instagram account:
Tumblr media
His sleeves are never rolled up in Inside Eden’s Gate, but it’s most likely because that would have meant covering up the actor’s actual tattoos and possibly painting more, so I suppose they thought it was more convenient to just hide them.
The last notable change regarding John’s appearance in the short film is that, for the first and seemingly only time, he’s wearing a shoulder holster, but his gun is not the revolver we’ve seen for far. Instead, it looks like a semi-automatic pistol, maybe a 1911. Since, in Inside Eden’s Gate, Joseph also has this type of gun and not the revolver he carries in Far Cry 5 (albeit rarely, and he never uses it), it’s possible that, once again, the team couldn’t find the right weapons for the movie and used the available props.
Tumblr media
In the live-action TV spot “Anything Can Happen, Everything Will”¹⁵, John is this time played by model and actor Jon Oswald, who jokingly described the character as “the asshole in the Gucci trench coat” when he shared the video on his Instagram account¹⁶.
Tumblr media
John’s outfit looks identical to Rob Evors’ in Inside Eden’s Gate (except the shoes and the holster, it seems), so it’s likely that they just reused the same clothes. Like in the film, John’s sunglasses (which are not blue) aren’t on his head; he’s wearing them. His hair is a bit different, but it’s probably simply because Jon Oswald’s hairstyle looked close enough to John’s and they thought it didn’t need to be modified, so I don’t think this “change” is significant.
Thanks to the pictures that Mackenzie Lawrén Johnson (better known as Kenz Lawrén), who plays Faith Seed in the short film and the TV spot, posted on Instagram¹⁷, we can have a better look at him and his tattoos.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They haven’t changed much compared to the previous ones, but we can now see a goat (a symbol for Lust, also directly from the Taolennoù Ar Mission) next to the snake on his left arm. In the game, the goat will disappear from his hand, be redesigned, and end up on his right forearm. We see two other tattoos in the picture, but they simply are Jon Oswald’s¹⁸.
Tumblr media
In the image below, drawn by Anthony Winn, who made storyboards for the TV spot¹⁹, the character on the far right (who is not Joseph), wearing a vest and sunglasses, and standing next to a woman who is probably Faith, appears to be an early version of John. This time, he’s holding a rifle, different from the one described in Absolution, and not a handgun. For once, his sister is armed as well.
Tumblr media
In The Book of Joseph²⁰, John, as a child, is described as “the best looking, the least odd” of the Seed brothers, which is why the narrator, Joseph himself, believes he was adopted first after they were sent to an orphanage. When they meet again as adults, Joseph says his younger brother is “strikingly handsome, elegant”, wears “tailored suits” and very expensive shoes, has gleaming hair, shiny teeth, and manicured hands. He also writes that, as John Duncan (the name of his adoptive parents), “physically, he was society’s very model of success”. Psychologically, however, it was another story… but this will be discussed later. Although the John Seed we meet in the game isn’t exactly the same person as John Duncan was anymore, he’s still “elegant” and seems to take care of his appearance. Joseph doesn’t mention tattoos, but it’s likely that John got them later, after the Project was created.
An official guide for Far Cry 5, by Prima Games, was released alongside it. In the book, which was written in 2017, we get to see what John looked like when the game was still in development.
Tumblr media
This design is very close to the final one, but for some reason, his sunglasses, bunker key, earring, and tattoos are all (temporarily) gone. However, the “SLOTH” scar has now appeared on his chest instead of the tattoo he previously had, even though it’s a bit closer to his collarbone than it will be in the game. His outfit and facial features look slightly different, but this is also true for many other characters in the guide.
On IGN’s YouTube channel, a video titled “Far Cry 5: Why John Seed Is Your Charmingly Deadly Enemy” was uploaded in February 2018²¹. In it, we get a glimpse of an early version of the “You have been Marked” TV broadcast²², and although the setting looks different, John’s appearance is very close to his final one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By the way, if you look at the noticeboard behind the TV, you’ll see that the Testicle Festival was supposed to take place in 2017 instead of 2018. When this early in-game footage was recorded, Far Cry 5 was probably still scheduled to come out in September 2017 (which is what the first rumors said and could also explain why all the calendars in the game suggest we are in September).
In the thumbnail of the YouTube video, John looks exactly like himself:
Tumblr media
He does too in the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” artwork²³, this promotional screenshot²⁴, and this poster²⁵:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And in a trailer posted by Ubisoft three weeks before the release of Far Cry 5, a “character spotlight”²⁶, John has his final design as well. The only difference is that, although the game was about to come out, they still called him “The Inquisitor” instead of “The Baptist”.
Tumblr media
Then, on March 27, 2018, Far Cry 5 was released.
To be continued…

Clock Tower ‘Port+’ announced for PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC
Gematsu Source
Tumblr media
Publishers WayForward and Limited Run Games have announced an enhanced version of Super Famicom survival horror game Clock Tower for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC (Steam). It will launch in early 2024 with support for English, Japanese, French, Italian, German, and Spanish language support.
Here is an overview of the game, via WayForward:
About
This enhanced version of the original 16-bit Clock Tower marks the first time this terrifying initial adventure in the popular horror series will officially be translated and released in North America and Europe.
Originally released on Super Famicom in 1995 in Japan, Clock Tower traps players in the haunting confines of the Barrows family manor, where they’ll be pursued by Scissorman, a murderous, shears-wielding psychopath. As teenage orphan Jennifer Simpson, players will use a point-and-click interface to explore the mansion and search every disturbing corner to find items, reveal secrets, and discover ways to survive Scissorman’s assaults. Without any offensive capabilities, Jennifer must rely on her wits and resourcefulness if she has any hope of escaping with her life and earning one of the game’s multiple endings. A tense atmosphere, chilling sound effects, detailed 2D animations, and randomized elements to maximize replayability demonstrate why Clock Tower is considered a groundbreaking pioneer in the survival-horror genre.
Harnessing the power of Limited Run Games’ Carbon Engine, this new edition of Clock Tower retains the authentic gameplay, graphics, and sound of the original version while also adding modern features and enhancements. These include a new vocal theme song performed by Mary McGlynn (Silent Hill series), a new animated opening, motion-comic cutscenes before and after the game, a bonus art gallery, border artwork, save states, multiple language options, and more.
Clock Tower will be published digitally in North America and Europe by WayForward, followed by a physical version that will be offered on select platforms by Limited Run Games. Further details, including information on the physical preorder window, will be announced at a later date. For the latest news, please visit www.wayforward.com and www.limitedrungames.com, and follow @wayforward and @limitedrungames on social media.

I feel like people who say classic is better than patho 2 haven't... been... invested enough to care? which I do understand from a technical standpoint, the game is less accessible - be it the increased price, but also the challenging gameplay that was made (on PURPOSE!) way, way less forgiving than the original.
saying that patho 2 is only better in terms of graphics and performance is doing it a HUGE disservice, just take a listen to the damn soundtrack! one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard!
should the nostalgia factor be accounted in? yes, probably. pathologic classic is basically the same age as the overwhelming majority of its fans, it grew up with them.
but if we take a step back and look at it from an objective perspective, we know the game doesn't offer a complete story, it was rushed and put together very quickly given its flimsy budget. it is in fact, impressive that such an ambitious game was able to offer a vast, fleshed out experience with multiple endings and paths.
pathologic 2 was built on the foundation its predecessor, and the previous IPL games, had laden out - and the work they were able to accomplish is HUGE, not only visually but on all aspects you could think of.
the story of 2 isn't as good (even worse?) as the original? patho 2, as of today, isn't a complete game. it only focuses, for now, on the haruspex. and as we all know, humans' point of view are limited and strongly subjective. the game doesn't offer a complete narrative, but it's not even trying to. the story is about artemy, and artemy alone.
so, what does the story of artemy offer us? his eyes show us that the steppe is now a full, living entity, no longer an eerie set piece. the Kin are a complex society, rich in identity, culture, tradition, values, and philosophy. they are given a language and a role to play.
the plague itself isn't just another chokehold the game is throwing at you, but a physical threat, a conscious living creature - that haunts you, taunts and mocks you at every given opportunity.
then you have the thread that ties everything together - death. death is also a Someone, with motives and intentions. your main villain and your strongest ally.
and of course the perpetual themes of hope, childhood, power, innocence, faith, time, dreams, etc.
pathologic 2 is just as complex, if not way more, as classic, and it's just the first one in the series.

Organization XIII Coded Avatars
Hi howdy
I was scrounging around in the depths of the khwiki and ended up on the Avatar Menu page. I never played kh coded (...this is technically from Kingdom Hearts Mobile) and I know very little about its gameplay but there was this side mode where you could make custom avatars and there were a bunch of pre-set ones, all with unique usernames and quotes
There’s one for every member in Organization XIII.
Please look at them.
Tumblr media
DaSuperior “Avatar Parts, empower me!”
Tumblr media
Fr33sh00tr “Pet goldfish? As if!”
Tumblr media
Whirlwinnr “‘Love’...my outfit? Bah.”
Tumblr media
TheChillE1 “Avatar pets? Fascinating!”
Tumblr media
SilentHero “On your last legs yet?”
Tumblr media
ZexyScheme “You cheat? Deplorable.”
Tumblr media
LunaDVine “Expecting a mission?”
Tumblr media
Flamesilox “F-L-A...Got it memorized?”
Tumblr media
N♪cturne “My new song melts faces!”
Tumblr media
GambleOfF8 “Scratch card? I'm game.”
Tumblr media
AssaXIn8 “The Keyblade must be mine.”
Tumblr media
SavageNmph “Do I detect DISTRESS?”
Tumblr media
Key2DestNE “They ran out of sea-salt.”
Tumblr media
Never4get “We meet again.”
Let me reiterate that these are from an official Kingdom Hearts game
I was going to make a cute little graphic or something but I decided nah I want the pngs to be downloadable straight from the post
Other notes and some (lots of) rambling under the cut
Avatar parts and scratch cards are references to mechanics related to the Avatar Kingdom as a whole. No idea what avatar pets are supposed to be though- I think he might be referring to buddies
Tumblr media
Shoutout to Naminé being assigned mouse. Also “Shadow Dawg”. Also Roxas as “Dog 3″ is sending me- this isn’t what this post is supposed to be about
There’s this thing called the “Avatar Sector” where you... clear a bunch of floors or something idk I’ve never played the game
But after every ten floors you get a new title! For the sake of time I’m just screenshotting the table and pasting it in
Tumblr media
And each Organization member has one of these titles. From the bottom up, we’ve got:
Junior Diver: Roxas Diver: Demyx, Marluxia Senior Diver: Vexen, Larxene Sector Mod: Xaldin Sector Admin: Zexion Sector Master: Axel Architect: Xigbar Wizard: Lexaeus, Saïx, Xion Legend: Xemnas, Luxord
I’mmmmmm not sure what the pattern is there? Or if there even is one???? It’s not physical strength, or ability, or importance in the Organization, but it doesn’t look to be entirely random... Considering this is from a side mode to KH Coded it’s probably better to just not think about it but hey now you know
Various ramblings on the things themselves:
Da Superior..................
Xigbar’s quote is a reference to that “Do you always have to stare at me like I just drowned your goldfish” line from 358/2 Days. this might be common knowledge but I like to cover my bases
shoutout to tumblr user @/ fr33sh00tr for being one of the uhhh 3 people I’ve seen ever reference these things
wow they really play up Xaldin’s hatred of love to a comedic level huh
the username Whirlwinner SLAPS though
Vexen’s mouth is the only one of the Organization that’s not pink/scarlet! Peculiar!
Lexaeus’s quote is a reference to the time in 358/2 Days when he hit Roxas really hard. Another L for Lexaeus fans 😔
also his eyes are gold for some reason?? clearly doesn’t mean anything here but why
aesthetic probably. xigbar’s eyes ARENt gold
ZexyScheme 💀
fun fact Zexion uses the word “deplorable” TWICE in Chain of Memories (only once in the English version of Re:CoM but he does indeed say it twice in the Japanese version). This is the third time. It’s not a very common word or anything so I think it’s his favorite word lmao
Axel’s username is a reference to the silly little nickname Xigbar uses for him in Days which makes me think Xigbar came up with all these usernames
shoutout to Demyx
something about the way “Do I detect DISTRESS?” is written is so funny to me, she sounds SO excited
XION AS NEVER4GET......
it’s definitely Xion btw because they all have numbers ascribed to them and Never4get is the only 14
that’s it
Thank you so much for to reading my post

how would you pull off a dark zelda game? or do you believe zelda should always be colorful and bright? i often think about the botw concept art for “organic” guardians, i wonder what the game would have been like if they had gone with those, imo they were cool :)
I do think that zelda games should always be bright, and i don't think that dark themes should be exclusive to aesthetically "dark" games! there are multiple games in the zelda franchise ALREADY which tackle dark themes and subject matter without sacrificing their aesthetic, notably mm & oot, two of the most widely beloved games in the franchise. in my opinion any take on zelda which removes the bright and colorful aesthetic ceases to read visually as a zelda game. these are games which owe their start to the NES, a console which displayed 56 colors total. the foundational games of the series were characterized by their brightly-colored graphics and the creative use of the colors available on their consoles to bring the world to life. any game that attempts to become aesthetically darker by decreasing saturation across the board or making black/gray a central color element is going to lose the colorful art direction that unites most of the rest of the games, making it feel out of place aesthetically and immediately losing some of the brand recognition that the zelda franchise has.
I think it's also worth noting that loz's physical game mechanics are often reliant on the player being able to easily see approaching enemies and terrain--being real-time combat and dungeon-based, the gameplay relies heavily on the assumption that the player will be able to understand and interpret the onscreen visuals quickly and easily. bright and colorful graphics lend themselves to this kind of gameplay, but if you deliberately darken the game overall or decrease saturation across the board, you're making it more difficult for the player to see and react to the terrain and enemies that are coming at them. for a real-time-combat dungeon rpg, I generally think that's a bad move. (that's not to say that dark graphics can never be successful, but it takes a LOT more effort to make dark graphics easily readable at a glance, so they're generally easier to pull of in games which don't require quick reactions like turn-based rpgs or visual novels, or in games that use that decrease in reaction time as a mechanic or storytelling method, like horror games. loz's niche specifically just doesn't really work with darker aesthetics.)
all that being said, i'm in no way opposed to darker SUBJECT MATTER being depicted in loz games, and in fact my top 3 zelda games (oot, botw, and mm) are all GREAT examples imo of successfully tackling darker subject matter while maintaining the bright, colorful aesthetic that characterizes loz. these games talk about war, trauma, death, agency, etc etc. in incredibly real, thoughtful, impactful ways while still being bright and saturated and full of color and life, and I'd even say the art direction LENDS to the themes rather than detracting from them. if done thoughtfully and intentionally, bright and colorful art direction can compliment and enhance a darker storyline, and loz already has a rich history of stories that do that perfectly. I think if future games want to lean into darker themes it's still important that they keep the bright and colorful art direction and work WITH it instead of against it.

gameplay >>>> graphics
this is why i end up buying a lot more indie games than aaa games
just shapes and beats gameplay: absolute bullet hell, memorize every pattern, interlaced hardcore s rank just shapes and beats graphics: pink
the flat desgins are cool but not ray-tracing level, but it's still a fun game
factorio gameplay: modular factories, make bus, nuclear warfare, manage space, go space, literally become a fucking software engineer
factorio graphics:
Tumblr media
this is my favourite game
and then there's teardown, which is just a feat of engineering. it has beautiful graphics, but that doesnt take away from the gameplay and experimentation. one guy made an entire ray tracer, physics engine, destruction simulation, and procedural effects. its an absolutely awe-inspiring game that deserves attention.
and dont even get me started on zachtronics

Happy 27th Anniversary to Dead or Alive!
On the 26th of November, twenty seven years ago, the original Dead or Alive game was released in Japanese arcades.
The world was introduced to the fast-paced action of DOA, and with DOA2 and 3 heralded as two of the best fighting games in the genre, it established itself as a landmark title in the fighting game genre as well as gaming in general.
Tumblr media
The plot centers on the fight between the Mugen Tenshin Ninja Clan and the giant conglomerate DOATEC, host of the Dead or Alive World Combat Championship tournaments. Featuring a cast of colourful and cool characters, all fighting in the tournaments in hopes of fulfilling their own personal goals.
The impressive counter-based combat system, beautiful graphics and crazy stage interactions, from exploding fuel tanks to jumping off cliffs and tumbling down staircases, are the three core pillars of DOA that set it apart from its competition. Of course, the female cast, for better or worse, is also central to DOA, gaining popularity with its fans as well as notoriety with the general public, who often thinks there is no actual substance under the massive catalogue of swimsuit DLCs and breast physics. Oversexualislzation of female characters in games, and fighting games specifically, is nothing new, but where DOA differentiated from other mainstream fighting games, is by launching a spin-off series, the notorious Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball sub-series, where the female cast and their sex appeal is put front and center, a factor that continued to spill over more and more to the main series in DOA4 and 5, with the team attempting to set the fighting game line of the series apart with DOA6, to mixed results.
As of 2016, the franchise has sold over 9.7 million units worldwide.
The future of the main fighting game series is currently unknown. Xtreme Beach Volleyball is still going strong, but after DOA6 failed to impress both the wider casual audience and the competitive FGC scene, while also pissing off longtime fans with predatory DLC practices on top of that, a DOA7 does not currently seem possible in the horizon, with Team Ninja currently enjoying the aftermath of Nioh's success.
I grew up with DOA and will be eagerly awaiting news of its eventual return, because a series with so much wackiness and genuinely fun gameplay will eventually crawl itself back from the dead, I'm sure of it!

He'll Branch be like:
Even in Hell, miracles can happen.
Noir: 😃
But not for you. Suffer forever, teenage boy!
Noir: 😢
"Yeah, Dess! What did teenage boys ever do to you, huh?!"
...I thought that's what everyone's teenage years were like! XD
Tumblr media
But your comment did lead to this bit of inspiration...
Tumblr media
Noir: "Is this...all there is?"
Magolor: "To the afterlife? Don't ask me! I didn't even know building a theme park would work til I tried it! (I don't remember too much about it because I was massively hallucinating at the time. Max says I don't have to worry about litigation if anything breaks because everyone's already dead! ...You didn't hear that, by the way.)"
Magolor: "I thought you'd been here longer than me, actually."
Noir: "Yeah, I guess... I just kind of...zoned out through most of it. Kind of hoping...if I stopped thinking, I would disappear..."
Noir: "I... I'm only 16, you know? And...I only made one real mistake. Or... maybe everything was a mistake. Because every stupid decision I made on my own just made things worse."
Noir: "...Maybe the mistake was being born, I don't know."
Magolor: "Hmm. My boyfriend is damned for a near-eternity just because he 'whimsically' tried to take something for himself that belonged to everyone..."  (And it's going to BE an eternity if he doesn't stop pulling dumb pranks that add hours onto his clock!)"
Magolor: "I thought I'd done far worse than he had, but I feel like I got off lighter, even with this thing rooted deep into my head."
Noir: "...What, the literal clown who pranked my sister? Who's always laughing like a drugged out fiend all the time?"
Magolor: "The very same! He used to love flying. Said it was the greatest, most freeing feeling in the world. ...He has to waddle everywhere now very, very slowly or he falls apart - and he hates it."
Noir: "...You know what sucks also? Not having hands."
Magolor: "Or to have them but not have control over them! ...Marx laughs because he would never admit to anyone how hard it is. And even though he can't stop pranking people, he's secretly terrified of being left here alone as the very last one of us damned souls."
Noir: "..."
Magolor: "...I don't know what it is that makes some lives harder than others. Why some of us live in a frankly blissful world of naps and sunshine without a thought in their round pink, friendly heads while some of us live to see everything we wanted, even the simple dreams, ripped away from us. And I don't know why half the patrons here are physical manifestations of nightmares and nihilism and death while the rest of us just wanted to be pretty, or prosperous, or strong, or have friends, or to protect someone they loved..."
Noir: "...Yeah..."
Magolor: "I thought if I built the best possible theme park, I could make everyone smile and shout with joy. My own little universe where I was in control. Not the harsh reality. But...this place is only a short-term fantasy. A game of pretend that fades as soon as you look away and see that the rest of the world is still on fire."
Magolor: "I haven't known you that long, and though you buried my boyfriend in the lake of fire, I think you deserve to be saved. To have everything good that was taken away from you and then some."
Magolor: "Despite a long time being used as a host for limitless power, I can't give you any of that... But I can promise, for you at least, the rides and games in Merry Magoland will always be free."
Noir: "...Guess it's something. And starting from nothing... it's a lot."
Noir: "Oh, but get rid of the mother%$!& tea cups for me!"
Magolor: "I could repurpose the land to build a 'Scope Shot' arena. There's been a lot of requests for that one to come back."
Noir: "'...Scope Shot?"
Magolor: "Interested? I've got some gameplay footage right here!"
Noir: "Wow, what are these, PS1 graphics?"
Magolor: "......"

the way i knew you love adachi when you said you played p4… i played p4g over the summer and got into a big adachi hyperfixation again. he ist just. everything to me. so i obviously think you have great taste 🤝
Lmaoooo are my tastes really that predictable 😭
But SUPERB taste anon, all Adachi appreciators have the most refined and excellent of taste
(I'll mention spoilers below here but like, it's a 13 year old game so)
It physically pains me that P4 didn't get as massive of a fanbase as P5 did. Like I understand why given the massive gameplay and graphic improvements of P5, but still P4 was excellent for its time and Adachi deserves so much more recognition.
I could write an entire dissertation on why he's such a well-constructed antagonist — admittedly a lot of it is personal preference (as I much much much prefer unsympathizable antagonists and he falls into some of the top tier tropes), but I think even from more objective standards his character was excellently executed.
I am incapable of being normal about Tohru Adachi. Every time I see his visage I immediately begin frothing at the mouth.
Like bro really threw a tantrum of almost-mass-destruction over being an incel. Incredible

I'm gonna put Stellar Blade in the same category as astral chain
Both are games that are heavily influenced by NiER: Automata and have great action, graphics, music, gameplay, but the story falls flat on its face, the level designs are cool but repetitive, & the characters are unremarkable. Astral chain at least had much better voice acting and no camel toe physics. They're both hype and fun to play through but def not GOTY material (except the soundtracks, Stellar Blade had some of the composers from Nier work on it)
I'd recommend if you don't care much about story and would rather kill fucking awesome monsters.

Games I’ve been enjoying lately!!!
Soul of Sovereignty Prelude: The first beautiful, funny, clever, and dark chapter of @ pallisia’s new linear visual novel was a blast to go through and totally exceeded all my expectations. While the full piece won’t be out for a few years, this is a peak into a vast world that I can’t wait to see more of. I will be waiting very very patiently for the full story cause the level of care and detail on display shows that SoulSov has an incredible story to tell (and if you want to check out their other works, Lady of the Shard is a beautiful, finished comic the creator made that you can read for FREE right here!).
Corru.Observer: Corru.Observer is weird and it’s free and you should go play it now with no more input from me. But if you want more, it’s an ongoing neocities game/site about exploring a half broken alien biocomputer with great world building, atmosphere, and graphics. It’s part point and click, part exploration, part visual novel, and part turn based RPG. While it’s in active development with new updates coming ever few months, the creator (@ corruworks) has started working on it full time and I’d guess there’s already a good 10ish?? hours of gameplay and lots of secrets to find! Please give it a shot, I think everyone should know about it!
START AGAIN START AGAIN START AGAIN: A Prologue: If you’ve been enjoying the time loop jokes that have been going around on tumblr recently (or just like time loops in general??) you’re gonna really enjoy this. It’s more of a puzzle than an RPG (though it has turn based combat) because I think the real gameplay is in on how you approach repeating the same final dungeon over and over. I was surprised at the level of depth in the dialog/writing - seeing how the characters react to different choices and what the main character lets you do / not do makes multiple runs to see different outcomes so worth it. I think the creator (@ insertdisc5) absolutely nailed the ‘funny guy in despair’ writing. I totally plan on getting the companion / full game In Stars and Time, but waiting a bit to see if there will be a physical release :D (here is the Itch link but it's on sale on Steam rn so here's that link too)

it doesnt matter how fancy and high res the graphics are, and they truly are, I won't deny
but mortal kombat still just having a complete and utter disregard for selling the physics of attacks and not fluidly connecting the hit and flinch animations of attacks so they look believable still just makes it look so ugly to watch actual gameplay
