Hong Kong in 1990
This was the scariest airport I had landed in. It was right next to the sea and to make matters worse on the day we landed it was pouring (like it always does!). As we got out of our Cathay flight they gave us these plastic rain coats and I was like - This is just like Sreedevi in Chaalbaz!
I remember taking a cab from the airport to the YMCA hotel we were staying at. I remember not remembering to pick up my Cathay goody bag from the cab. My little sis and I were so sad...honestly I don't know why...because all I recollect it had was a poster of a Cathay flight!
For me my visit to the Ocean Park was the highlight in Hong Kong. There was this crazy ride which was a topsy turvy ferris wheel...I had never sat in anything like that before. It was super exciting! My poor little sister was not even 4 feet tall back then and all she got to go on was this lame ride in the water. Haha! Honestly I was so excited with all the rides - I even went on the roller coaster by myself - that I did not notice my sister was not having too much fun. Believe me she complains about it even today...23 years later! But yes we did have quite a splash in the water park section.
The park also had the longest escalators I had been on. Well, you see back then in Muscat only Sabco Centre had an escalator and it was just for one floor.
There was one evening we were left in our room while my parents went shopping. Varsha and I watched TV to entertain ourselves and God I have never seen so many Chinese cartoons at a stretch. When my parents got back I actually yelled at them for leaving us with such little choice for entertainment!
Hong Kong was the last destination of my first multi-country vacation and the flight back from Hong Kong to Dubai with stopovers in 2 other cities was my first longest flight ever!
In a few months, I will be making that same trip again. Life does have an odd way of coming a full circle.

Singapore in 1990
So after Bangkok (and like a day in Pattaya) we headed to Singapore. I remember it being green. I know most people go for the clean and green opinion about this city, but for a Gulf kid who just saw sand all the time green was what stuck.
Back then there was no night safari at the zoo or the aquarium tunnel at Sentosa...yes, it was that long ago!
But Singapore did not disappoint. My little sister Varsha and I quite enjoyed the Jurong Bird Park but I think the Singapore Zoo won hands down! It was the first time we watched a show where the seals and walruses were the stars. It was fantastic entertainment...and I am not saying that because I was 8 years old then...I love it even today!
The Sentosa island was according to me very boring in 1990. We went to a wax museum and a butterfly park and then saw the dancing fountains. Even for the 90's that was pretty poor entertainment!
Another memory is visiting the Toys R Us store in some mall and that was the BIGGEST toy store I had been to. I picked up a barbie and Varsha picked up a gorilla...and we carried it to every place we went! Like a fancy possession...something we had picked up from a really BIG toy store.
We used the bus to get around then. They had this ticket machine that my sister and I would fight to operate. It was just so fascinating...I hope they have not changed the system.
I did go back to Singapore in 2010, twenty years later...and it was a very very different kind of trip. About that...later!

The Memories Of My First Trip
I still remember the excitement my sister and I felt as amma put us to bed. We had to get up early the next morning. Appa was driving us in our Toyota Corona from Muscat to Dubai.
At around 4.00 a.m. amma walked into our room prepared for the ordeal of waking us up...but my little sister and I sprung out of our bunk beds.
As I put this down as my first text post on tumblr I can still feel the lightness in my feet and the giddiness in my head like I did 25 years ago.
That I think defines the first time I knew I loved travel. As the years went by I began to love so many more facets of travel...from the planning & research to the places I stayed in & I visited, from the discovery of something new to the time away from the old.
This space I will use to share my journeys as I tumble across interesting places, food, thoughts and stories.
Hoping you will enjoy tumbling with Vee!
