Do you feel like nutritionists are always changing their minds? Do you want science-based information about diet but don’t know whom or what to believe?
If you’re nodding in agreement, you’re not alone: More than 80% of Americans are befuddled.
Yet it’s a lament that’s getting quite tiring – if you’re a nutrition scientist, that is. So much so that I refocused my career to shine scientific light on today’s critical food conversations, which have profound impacts on public health and the environment. My mantra: From farm to fork, what we eat matters.
In fact, did you know that 80% of chronic diseases are preventable through modifiable lifestyle changes, and diet is the single largest contributing factor?
Science says plants are better for you and our planet

Clean eating or keto? Paleo or gluten-free? Whole 30 or vegan? Forget fad diets, because science has the answers – there is far more agreement about diet and health than you may know. The scientific report from the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, for example, concluded that a plant-based diet is best for human health and the environment alike. More than 75% of your meal should comprise vegetables, fruits and whole grains, and protein sources should include beans, peas, nuts, seeds and soy.
Canada’s 2019 Food Guide is similarly plant-focused, as is Harvard’s Healthy Eating Plate, while Brazil emphasizes foods “mainly of plant origin.” These guidelines and others also stress the importance of limiting processed and ultra-processed foods.
There’s also consensus from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and others that plant-based diets are more sustainable, largely due to the high energy inputs and environmental damage of livestock.
While it may sound like a fad, a “plant-based” diet has been studied for decades. Awareness escalated as it addresses two urgent public health challenges: the chronic disease epidemic and the climate change crisis. It’s a win-win for human health and the environment. Plant-based diets can be adapted to suit your taste preferences, traditions and cultures, as the Blue Zones, or regions of the world where people typically live longer than average and with fewer chronic diseases, indicate.
If science has the keys to a health-promoting, disease-preventing, planet-saving diet, why are people so confused? A closer look will arm you with the skills to sort fact from fiction.
There’s money in confusion
Celebrity junk science is an obvious player. It might even be cloaked in scrubs, like Dr. Oz – though chastised by the Senate for his quackery. (Physicians, in general, have little to no training in nutrition.)
Celebrities garner enormous platforms, often clouding the truth (or drowning it completely); the deal between Netflix and Gwyneth Paltrow, whose company Goop was sued over a certain jade egg, suggests that science is losing the battle.
One needn’t be a celebrity to hold sway, however. A list of the Top 100 influencers showed that most were bloggers or athletes with no expertise. (None were scientists.) These voices gain considerable traction on social media. Health Feedback, a network of scientists who review the accuracy of online content, conducted a study with the Credibility Coalition and found a minority of articles received a positive rating, with most “exaggerating the benefits and harms of various foods.”
Traditional media don’t always shed light, alas. Single-study sensationalism is ubiquitous – for example, glyphosate in oats, coconut oil and weight, coffee causing cancer – and findings lack context.
And science journalism has taken a hit, and is perhaps why CNN interviewed an anti-science zealot. Or why the Los Angeles Times tweeted that there’s a “growing belief” about the health benefits of celery juice. (Pro tip: It’s not a thing.)
Surrounding the din of bogus dietary advice and media hype is a backdrop of science denialism, which legitimizes anti-science when espoused from top levels of government. Science illiteracy also plays a role.
Nonetheless, there are knowledge gaps: 57% of Americans have never seen the dietary illustration from the U.S. Deparment of Agriculture called MyPlate or know little about it, and 63% reported it was hard to recognize sustainable choices. Shoppers also claimed that identifying healthy food was difficult (11%) or moderate (61%). Unsurprising, perhaps, since 48% looked to crowded food packages for guidance: Some labels are meaningful while others are little more than marketing. (All natural, anyone?) Indeed, powerful food and agriculture lobbies still exert influence on dietary guidelines and obscure the science.
Through all of this, I believe the nutrition science community has tacitly contributed by failing to participate collectively in the public discourse. Nor have we adequately defended our discipline when attacked, whether by journalists, physicians or food writers.
Changing the conversation
Potent societal powers create a culture of nutrition confusion that not only obfuscate the truth about diet, they undermine science as a whole. Three steps will help eaters navigate this rocky terrain.
Begin by asking critical questions when digesting diet news. Does the writer have an advanced degree in nutrition, or does she or he have expertise in science journalism? Are there references to peer-reviewed studies or scientific organizations? Is the source credible? Are miracle cures or quick results promised? Are there expensive price tags for magic bullets? Does it sound like clickbait? Questioning the who-what-where-why-how is paramount.
Second, remember that what flits through our newsfeeds often comes via algorithms that enable news to careen through our echo chambers and elicit confirmation bias, factual or not. Offline, too, we are more likely to share beliefs with friends and family, our tribe. Getting curious about what you eat and why it matters beyond your comfort zone is necessary: You may need to “unlearn what you have learned.”
Finally, try this on for size: Nutrition. Isn’t. Confusing. We all have cherished traditions and values – what we eat isn’t just about the science. (At least, I hope not.) But it is time to learn the fundamental food and nutrition facts that will inspire you to harness the power of food to promote health, prevent disease and protect the planet. Change is possible – and the truth is out there.

Nine Women Who Change History…...and the Men Who Took Credit

Did you ever get the sense that your history books are just one big boys club, filled with accomplishments by men, for men, and often to the exclusive benefit of men? Does it sometimes feel like the annals of human experience are simply a fraternity where guys are free to banter about sports and make crude noises without fear of offending the fairer sex?
And if it does feel that way, where are all the women? Did women really do nothing more than pop out babies and make pot roasts from the dawn of civilization until Cher overshadowed Sonny Bono in popularity and the whole world changed?
Of course not. It’s just that human history is littered (and I do mean littered) with greedy men who stole their very best ideas from brilliant women.
And in many cases, they didn’t just steal these ideas. They published them in journals, won prizes for them, earned millions from them, became noteworthy men of their time, and iconized in retrospect. Meanwhile, the women who’s ingenuity, insight, and intelligence they appropriated were more often than not footnoted, both in reality and through the lens of history.
But we wish to correct the record, both because education is all about that unending quest for truth and because a future in which women earn equal credit, respect, and financial compensation begins by acknowledging the sins of our past.
So with that, we spotlight women of stellar accomplishment who should be far more famous and celebrated than they are:
1. Rosalind Franklin: The Double Helix

Image: Rosalind FranklinOne of the most important scientific revelations of the twentieth century has also long been a subject of disputed credit. Famously, Cambridge University scientists James D. Watson and Francis H.C. Crick are credited with uncovering the double helix formation that would catapult forward our understanding of human DNA. In fact though, British chemist and X-ray crystallographer Rosalind Franklin had been engaged in the study of DNA over at Kings’s College in London in 1951 when she produced a groundbreaking image. A colleague showed this image to Watson and Crick without permission. This was the turning point in their research, though when they published their earth-shattering findings in 1953, they gave only passing reference to Franklin’s contributions. In perpetuity, it is the Cambridge pair that is associated with the double helix. So says the Nobel Prize they received in 1958, four years after Franklin died of ovarian cancer.
2. Lise Meitner: Nuclear Fission

Image: Lise MeitnerAs long as we’re on the subject of scientific genius, there’s the story of Lise Meitner. It’s hard to say whether Meitner is better or worse off for having been slighted by a greedy man. Meitner was a student under the legendary physicist Max Plank, and the first German woman to hold a professorship at a German University. As the Nazis rose to power, the young Jewish scientist was forced to flee her home country. She continued to correspond with her research partner, Otto Hahn, from her new location in Scandinavia. In 1938, Hahn and Meitner joined forces to outline the concept of nuclear fission. This was the groundbreaking moment that would, in just five years, give rise to the awesome destructive capacity of the atomic bomb. Anybody looking to send angry letters to those responsible would find only Hahn’s name on the landmark paper revealing the discovery. Hahn chose to omit his partner’s name and was thus the sole recipient of the 1944 prize in chemistry from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
3. Hedy Lamarr: Radio Guidance System

Hedy LamarrMeitner wasn’t the only woman working to build military might during World War II. She is joined by Austrian-born, American actress Hedy Lamarr, who in addition to becoming a star of the Silver Screen during the Golden Age of Hollywood, collaborated with composer George Antheil to create a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes. The Navy pretended it wasn’t interested in the technology, but of course it was. They stole Lamarr and Antheil’s idea, classified the patent and, by the 1960s, had begun to incorporate the technology into a host of new weapons systems. Perhaps even more importantly, Lamarr and Antheil’s work would be nothing less than the basis for the omnipresent Wi-Fi, CDMA, and Bluetooth wireless technologies.
4. Margaret Knight: Paper Bag Machine

Margaret KnightNot all of history’s greatest female inventors worked in the military. Margaret Knight made her greatest contributions to production in an era where industry ruled. Often referred to as Lady Edison, Knight was a well-known inventor, mostly because she had the wherewithal to stand up for her rights. In 1868, Knight was working for the Columbia Paper Bag Company when she invented a machine that automatically folded and glued paper bags into the formation familiar to shoppers today. As Knight worked toward the completion of a metal prototype, a machinist named Charles Anan visited her plant. Unbeknownst to Knight, the random machinist filed for a patent for her invention. She only learned of his deception when she applied for her own patent. Fortunately for Knight, many witnesses were on hand as she worked through her invention. This proved more than compelling in a judgment that ultimately awarded the patent—and all future royalties—to Knight.
5. Elizabeth Magie: Monopoly

Elizabeth MagieIn the 1930s, Parker Brothers introduced the game Monopoly to American families. The game made a millionaire out of an unemployed heater salesman named Charles Darrow. He became the first board-game millionaire, and a symbol of the quirky unpredictability of the American Dream. The only problem: he didn’t invent the game. Some thirty years prior, a woman named Elizabeth Magie created “The Landlord’s Game.” It’s intent was progressive in nature, designed to illustrate the evil of business monopolies. The game was prophetic, coming well in advance of the Great Depression. Ironically, it was this catastrophic era that led to Darrow’s unemployment and his subsequent fascination with a game played by some of his Quaker friends in Atlantic City. Landlord's Game imageDarrow would develop this exact variation of the Landlord’s Game into his pitch for Parker Brothers, including Atlantic City street names and places. Perversely, Darrow transformed Monopoly into a game that seems to celebrates dishonest business practices. On its way to retailing one of the most popular board games in history, Parker Brothers purchased Magie’s patent. The game’s original inventor would net a rough total of about $500 for her stroke of gaming genius.
6. Ada Lovelace: Computer Programming

Ada LovelaceLord Byron’s daughter, Ada Lovelace, was one of the world’s first computer geniuses, though her role is often minimized by male historians. In 1843, the mathematically erudite Lovelace collaborated with inventor Charles Babbage at the University of London. Babbage was working on something called an Analytical Engine, an early prototype of the computer. Lovelace contributed detailed and extensive notes to Babbage’s work, particularly by articulating the way Babbage’s machine could be fed data to complete complicated math problems, or even compose complex music. These ideas may mark the earliest recorded proposition for what would eventually become computer programming and algorithms. Today, Lovelace’s contributions are obscured by debate, and most often by the dismissive and unmistakably misogynistic characterizations of her role.
7. Margaret Keane: “Big Eyes”

While not technically concerned with an invention, the following one of the most egregious examples of chauvinistic greed on record. Margaret Keane is an American artist best known for her trademark “Big Eye” paintings, which were popular in the 1960s. The only problem: her fans in the ’60s were confident the paintings were done by her husband, Walter. Walter began selling his wife paintings as his own without permission in the 1950s. Eventually, Margaret discovered what Walter was up to. When she confronted him, Walter used threat, intimidation, and emotional abuse to force her silence. As the works gained in popularity, Margaret continued to toil in obscurity, while Walter enjoyed celebrity. In 1965, the two were divorced. In 1970, Margaret revealed the truth to the public. Walter denied her allegations, which ultimately led to a surreal 1986 courtroom scene in which the two were forced into a head to head paint-off. Walter claimed his sore shoulder prevented him from painting. Naturally, Margaret produced a perfect facsimile of her earlier works, earning the rightful claim to her works in perpetuity.
8. Trotula of Salerno: Women’s Health Findings

Trotula of Salerno is one of the earliest victims of historiographical misogyny. An Italian doctor in the eleventh century who wrote specifically about women’s health, she has been recognized as “the world’s first gynecologist.” Her writings have remained instrumental building blocks in our knowledge about human health, and women’s health specifically. And yet, her authorship had been cast into doubt over the ensuing centuries, entirely because historians and medical professionals were skeptical that a woman could have produced works of such accuracy or importance. That’s a messed up assumption, but so ingrained was this belief that many even doubted that Trotula of Salerno existed. This convenient doubt ultimately allowed numerous male physicians over subsequent years to cut and paste their own names over her work.
9. Candace Pert: Neuroscience Findings

Candace PertWhile still a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University, Candace Pert discovered the receptor that allows opiates to lock into the brain. This game-changing neuroscience revelation was so important that it led to an award—for her professor. Dr. Solomon Snyder was recognized for his student’s achievement. When Pert wrote a letter of protest to the award committee underscoring her determinant contributions, Dr. Snyder mansplained in response, “That’s how the game is played.”
Of course, men like Dr. Snyder have been playing this game for centuries. But we have an obligation to call them on it. It starts with history. But it continues in modern academia and today’s workplace. Let’s ensure all the brilliant women in our midst get their due credit. I think we’ve celebrated more than enough greedy men.

As a subject, history can lose students quickly if not taught in engaging ways. And while the best instructors can bring to life the pages and pages of history textbooks students often struggle through, there are alternative teaching methods that can improve this process.
One of the most promising is through video games.
Video games in the classroom
Video games have plenty of potential to teach in the classroom and beyond, and they’re already being utilized around the country.
As a 2002 article by Trent University professor Dr. Mark Griffiths entitled The Educational Benefits of Video Games argued, “Videogames have great positive potential in addition to their entertainment value and there has been considerable success when games are designed to address a specific problem or to teach a certain skill.”
This is demonstrated in many ways throughout society, including military training via strategy, tactical, and flight simulator games, as well as medical and surgical training through task-based simulations.

And there’s plenty of supporting research on the topic, including a scholarly review of over 300 available studies on video games potential in education, which pared the list down to the 39 most scientifically rigorous and worthy of peer-reviewed publication. The findings of the research were quite positive. As explained by Amy Novotney, “In the analysis of the 39 included studies, University of Connecticut researchers — led by professor of education Michael Young, PhD — found some evidence for positive effects of video games on learning languages and history, and in physical education.” (April 2015, Vol 46, No. 4)
Along with a fair amount of speculative research on the topic, there are many classrooms today across all levels of education that incorporate video games into their teaching.
At the collegiate level, colleges like California State University at Long Beach have history courses that rely heavily on video games to teach and engage with students. For much younger students, programs like New York City’s’ Quest to Learn incorporate video games in the curriculum from an early age.
There are also cases of schools using video games as a means to bridge the gap during the coronavirus quarantines which have closed schools across the US, an idea that has also been adopted in the US Army, where warfighters are using video games as a means to maintain readiness while maintaining social distancing protocols.

Younger educators are also learning the benefits that video games can have in their classrooms, those in elementary schools.
Future educators at New Mexico State University have gone through workshops to learn about Math Snacks Early Algebra, a research program that studies the effectiveness of video games to teach important algebraic fundamentals to fourth to fifth grade students.
And by integrating video games into the classroom, educators can reach students who having difficulty with traditional learning approaches. This is because video games engage players on many different levels, with the ability to convey information visually, audibly, and kinetically.
As a result of programs just like these, we can expect learning from video games to continue being honed for all grade levels, and across all subject areas (most especially in history).
The future of video games in the classroom
Despite significant progress, there are still some major hurdles.
The biggest problem is that video games continue to be seen solely as entertainment rather than educational exercises.  Games that offer little to no educational benefit, or even negative effects by warping or misrepresenting history, will inevitably add to this stigma.
It will take continued proper use by educators and researchers to break this stereotype.
Thankfully while these schools and programs are some of the first to incorporate video games in a positive way to teach topics like history, they certainly won’t be the last.
The growth of the video game industry has been enormous, an industry that is projected to generate over $150 billion in 2020. And while gaming grows in popularity, technology continues to become more and more accessible to students. This will only open the door more for video games to be adapted for education.

‘Master Q+A’ Continued: Scott Conary
We keep going with our ‘Master Q+A’ with Scott Conary from the April + May 2020 issue of Barista Magazine, as he discusses the beginnings of barista competitions, their impacts on café culture, and how they have changed.

In our April + May 2020 Fifteenth Anniversary issue of Barista Magazine, I had the opportunity to interview Scott Conary for our “Master Q+A” feature. Scott has spent the better part of two decades as a barista competition judge, and in the course of our interview, he had much more to share about the competitions and their evolution than we had room to fit on the printed page. As we wait for barista competitions to resume again sometime in the future (and here’s hoping it won’t be too long), this seemed like a good time to share Scott’s thoughts and reflections on the growth and change he’s witnessed firsthand as a judge.

Kenneth R. Olson: Do you have any funny stories from your years of judging that would highlight how much things have changed from, say, 2003 to 2020?
Scott Conary: Recently, I and a few others have been digging into the archives to come up with some fun memories of the “way it was,” somewhat spurred on by the memory lane effort when WBC celebrated 20 years.
Looking at past scoresheets is a really interesting study in evolution, the things we thought were important (and they were, ostensibly, at first!) It reminds me that when we started, education was such a large part of what the competitions did. That won’t ever go away exactly, but how that education was implemented has changed dramatically. 
The first step was to set standards and best practices that can be adhered to and scored. This was a big deal for the majority of folks who never took a class or were trained consistently, and a lot of the early years for comps were getting larger and larger numbers of people onboard to achieve those current standards.
Once that became better known (and disseminated widely through other outlets like Barista Guild of America certifications used as a jumping-off point from classes and workshops), the method of education and the focus of the competitions can be shifted to more exploratory and innovative. So instead of thinking that the competitions should mirror the real-world café setting, we were able to look at the competitions as a kaleidoscope of possibility—what is possible in our industry.
You can argue that for this next phase to be the most successful, it required that base of knowledge that the competitions helped spread worldwide. Now you can have a conversation with folks from around the world and not only agree but understand each other in terms of basic best practices.
With that established, the competitions can continue to evolve into an even better format for pushing the boundaries of what is possible in specialty coffee. And that is the part that everyone remembers: the new stuff, the crazy ideas, the innovations and demands by professional baristas to manufacturers to make better machines. Never before had there been such a response, in so short a time, to customer requests of ideas for improvements. So many of the things we take for granted now in our industry were forged in the fires of competition.
How important is it to get that score of six for coffee waste? So important that grinder manufacturers designed on-demand grinders. This wasn’t something that was being asked for specifically in cafés, but items like scales on and in drain trays, pressure, temperature, and flow rate, all of the various dose and distribution tools—all of these were pushed to creation from the desire for higher scores in competition.
I have a gift and curse for being able to wipe my memory clean between competitors and competitions. This probably stems from my scientific background and desire to remain as unbiased as possible, but what it means is, I often have to be reminded by friends who were there with me about all the crazy things we went through and drank.
It’s fun to remember that we required sugar, which we knew we would never use, at service, with the thought that we wanted to emulate a café setting. Or that all four beverages needed to be served at once (meaning there was a big boom in the tray industry for some time, until Stephen Morrissey showed us how to balance them all on our arms in 2008). 
Are there any trends you’ve noticed over the years that may have started in barista competitions and have gone on to become common in retail?
So many! Methods of preparation, tools for dose and distribution accuracy (scales, OCD, and other distribution and tamping tools), investigation and insights into ratios and liquid weight (beverage volume) out.
Even just the aesthetic of an organized and clean station, as the “Knowledge” standard for presentation, has its origins in the competition. Modbar was just the next logical step for this open presentation format, where everything is being “judged,” and no hiding from the “technical judge/customer.”
A really fun thing to watch from the 1,000-foot viewpoint, and the luxury of seeing it for so long, are the stages that people, countries, and cultures go through as they get involved in competitions. Sometimes the simplest form is mimicry. This can have something to do with the advent of social media and the start of performances being viewed on video and YouTube. Often since the foundational things cannot be transmitted through camera (quality of beverages, balance of espresso, etc.), what people pick up on are the visuals … what people are wearing, glassware used, styles of presentation and speech. For a couple of years after Michael Phillips won [the World Barista Championship] in 2010, so many competitors in distant parts of the world were wearing suspenders, as if that was part of the secret to winning.

Are there any performances, signature drinks, or something else from competition that stand out to you in particular?
There are too many to remember clearly, but what stands out are moments when you can see or feel a groundswell of change—a pivotal moment when the game is changed, and people can tell.
Focusing on WBC champions, Michael Phillips took the judges to task in 2010 with a complicated signature beverage and comprehensive presentation that really put judges to the test. This was a bit of a wake-up call and kept our efforts in training judges moving forward to be sure not to be the weak link in this partnership we have with baristas for innovating our industry.
If a barista can manage something in the time provided, we as judges need to be up to the task of evaluating its merits. I remember judging this routine in the USBC finals (since I recused myself for finals at WBC), and appreciated the orchestrated way information was shared, such that one didn’t really need to take notes, but simply experience and absorb. This idea of a presentation that is so well done that simply by experiencing it the judge remembers everything, is my gold-standard definition for new judges when it comes to thinking about the level of what they have experienced.
And then there are the innovators. Folks who I have told them how much I appreciate their willingness to push boundaries and try something new on a stage that is merciless and might not score as well as something safer. But their desire to share this innovation is stronger, at least to some degree, than simply wanting to win (of course they want both). Colin Harmon is one of these people. Year after year he brought something engaging and chancy to the stage to the judges’ delight, I think with the knowledge that it might be difficult to score, and I made sure to thank him for continuing to push every time.
Both James Hoffmann and Stephen Morrissey showed us that a presentation did not have to be elaborate, but could be informative, insightful, and simply focus on delicious coffee. Alejandro Mendez and Raul Rodas took charge of the swing toward origin at the time, to really tie every aspect back to the coffee’s journey, often with a very personal touch, as the first two WBC champions to come from coffee-growing regions.

In terms of signature beverage patterns, I remember distinctly that around 2009 was the “year of the bacon” (which was specifically challenging for me, not eating red meat), and 2010-2014 had a significant rise in the use of cascara.
What role do you think barista competitions have in promoting the profession and specialty coffee?
The competitions have already gone such a long way in promoting and developing the profession of barista—from setting best practice standards that have influenced coffee professionals around the world (and made it easier to find delicious coffee almost anywhere), to increasing the exposure of the craft and profession—sometimes to a mocking level, but still raising awareness of the effort and skill required to do this thing correctly and thus engage customers worldwide in the idea that there is a value worth paying for. Naturally it’s not 100% effective, very little is, but the proof exists that a change has happened and continues to happen, and it allows more coffee shops and professionals to flourish than ever before for customers who are willing to pay for the increased quality.

IS POLITICS DETERMINISTIC?
[Note:  If the reader has taken up reading this blog with this posting, he/she is helped by knowing that this posting is the next one in a series of postings.  The series begins with the posting, “The Natural Rights’ View of Morality” (February 25, 2020, https://gravitascivics.blogspot.com/2020/02/the-natural-rights-view-of-morality.html).  Overall, the series addresses how the study of political science has affected the civics curriculum of the nation’s secondary schools.]
 For those who might not be familiar with the term, determinism, it is the idea that humans do not really have control over their actions; that people are deceived into believing they do because they are conscious of going through some mental “decision-making” process before they act.  Of course, the exception to this process occurs when people react to an unexpected change in their immediate environment.  
This would be the case, for example, if one suddenly looked up and saw a ball headed for his/her noggin and the person automatically ducks.[1]  Perhaps the reader has noticed that while watching a baseball game and, from time to time, a foul lined ball will shoot directly backwards.  The people sitting behind the plate duck when that happens even though they know a fence is there to protect them.  
Obviously, there is no decision-making; there is just reaction in those types of cases. But such occasions are rare; the rest of the time people, according to determinism, do more calculating than choosing.[2]  Commentators have related behaviorism to determinism. The deterministic argument holds that due to the experiences a person has had, the physiological make-up of his/her body (a product of natural selection), and the conditions that a person faces at a given time, the way that person “decides” to act is, well, determined by those other forces.  
That is, the person will always react to any situation by “choosing” the option that the person perceives is best for him/her given the conditions.  Since the person has little control over the above listed factors, his/her choice is determined by them.  Even in an action which is judged to be a sacrifice, the best action for the person is determined by the emotional cost he/she will bear by doing otherwise.
Now, due to space constraints, the description here is simplifying things a bit, but what is pointed out is that whether it seems to be the best choice – in terms of the person’s self-defined interests – or not, it is.  People don’t choose against themselves as that is defined in its broadest terms. And one has very little control over the experiences or situations that “teach” a person what those interests are.   In the extreme, this denies the existence of free will.  
Applying these ideas leads to the practice, by those who want to solicit specific behaviors, of manipulating the factors of a situation so that the uses of rewards and punishments lead to desired outcomes.  Many behaviorist studies are about finding which stimuli, rewards and punishments, lead to which behaviors.
For example, the motivations John R. P. French and Bertram H. Raven[3] identify (coercion, reward, legitimacy, expert, and reference) are different forms of punishments and rewards.  For example, expert power indicates that one follows the advice of an expert, not because it is something the person necessarily wants to do, but because not to do so, it is believed, will elicit a punishment of a greater degree. That would be the case if not immediately, then eventually.  
The mind computes the expected rewards and punishments and decides to advance as much reward as possible and diminish as much punishment as possible.  And all is potentially calculated including the effort or costs involved with the calculations and the time sacrificed by following a course of action. Yes, even laziness is a factor, but whether one is lazy or not in a given situation is the result from prior calculations.
And while such venues where political decision-making takes place, supporting behavioral approaches to the study of politics – and any resulting political posturing – does not explicitly cite this understanding, but they proceed as if people do not have free will and can be manipulated.  Their resulting plans seem to assume that this is the case.  And another factor is, these studies do not claim to predict individual behavior, but the behavior of collectives.
And this line of assuming is not foreign to most people.  Does the typical person ever promise a child extra dessert if he or she behaves in a certain way?  Or perhaps stays on a job or in a career because the pay is so good or secure and the alternatives are known to be wanting or unknown?  If yes, they have experienced behaviorism at work.  
Even those who decide otherwise are so affected but have experienced other prior reward/punishment conditions.  The recipient and dispenser of rewards and even punishments correctly predict behavior by providing the correct stimulus.  How much of parenting, managing fellow workers, or governing consists of calculating such factors?  Intuitively, one can say most of what various “supervisors” consider is what rewards and/or punishments work.
Those who ascribe to this position might sight the patterns that human behaviors follow.  With enough knowledge, marketing strategies can do a good job of determining what products will sell; pollsters can often predict which candidates will win. Relatives can tell what a person will do when a life issue arises.  Pure free will, it seems, would make these predictions impossible.  
The only thing that prevents one hundred percent accuracy in these predictions is that just as in predicting the weather, there are too many factors interacting in highly complex ways that affect one’s decisions.[4]  And as with the weather, rates of successful predictions, especially at the individual level, are significantly low.  But most government decisions are not directed at an individual level, they aim at affecting populations – there the predicting level is much higher.
At least, that's what pure behaviorists would say.  There are few pure behaviorists these days. Historically, the names of Ivan Pavlov, Edward Lee Thorndike, John B. Watson, and B. F. Skinner can be cited as pioneers in behavioral studies.  Any introductory psychology textbook reviews the basic tenets associated with the works of these famous men.  
While somewhat tamed from their original constructed view, behavioral studies are still in vogue and used in all sorts of social calculations from psychology to marketing to political and economic analyses.[5]  But looking at that history is telling of current educational thinking.  The heyday of behaviorism began in the twentieth century. Why did this shift toward behaviorism happen during the last century?  At work were several historical trends.  
Since the Enlightenment era, in the eighteenth century, science has been on an ascendancy in western countries.  Due to the successes it garnered in practical areas such as agriculture and medicine and then industry, people began to rely more and more on the sciences.  This process arose and reached its apogee with the technological advancements of World War II and the postwar years.  
Until the beginning of the twentieth century though, its influences were pretty much limited to the study of natural phenomena.  But starting with the twentieth century, scientific protocols were beginning to be applied to social concerns.  Practitioners soon were aware that science's reliance on observable reality limited social sciences to the study of behavior since it was impossible to observe what goes on in the brain – of course, that observation was made at a time long before magnetic resonance imaging was developed.  
Behavior was what one could see and what one could measure.  Anything else was subject to speculation; at least, that was the case behaviorists made.[6]  Practically, scholars who followed the systems approach to social reality began to rely on scientific protocols in their studies.  Political science became highly statistical as the methods followed the hypothesis testing format which had been (and still is) the mainstay of the natural sciences.
         How this progression of viewing governance and politics from a natural rights view to how that view has affected the study of politics via behavioral studies was reviewed in past postings by reporting on the work of David Easton and the development of the political systems model.  The question that remains is how those developments in political science have affected how civics is taught in the nation’s secondary schools.  To do that a review of a major textbook of American government will be shared.

Abstract
The study of natural phenomena or major environmental problems usually requires the analysis of interdisciplinary data acquired from increasingly powerful sensors to achieve sustainability. This almost always results in complex interactions of hard mathematical modeling and the adoption of holistic system views. In many cases, the initial conditions are not known, the domain is not well defined and the constitutive parameters are heterogeneous generating large uncertainties. For this reason, knowledge-based models evolved from huge amounts of data have generated enormous interest to understand and solve such phenomena that do not always find suitable mathematical laws for their representation. So, the purpose of this communication is to briefly discuss the technical and challenges on data processing and engineering and give a glimpse on the scientific development and future direction of this domain.
Introduction
The systems modeling goal is to find and formulate laws that govern phenomena in a mathematical and precise way. However, it is recognized that such perfect descriptions are not always possible. Lockwood [1], Hansson [2] & Fagerstrom [3]. Incomplete and imprecise knowledge, qualitative observations and great heterogeneity of many interacting agents usually cause uncertainties when modeling complex phenomena of the ever changing nature or in the business world. It is recognized that knowledge is kept by experts or stored in data Gaul & Schader [4]. For organizations, the most important is to understand the great dynamism of the natural systems or the competitive environment in which they are inserted to make decisions about the sustainability and the responsiveness of their decisions. Therefore, information, knowledge and data are preemptive.
Sensors and Data
Talking about smart phones, tablets, notebooks, and connected objects, one need to understand that these "things" are full of sensors. A forecast shows it could exceed one trillion as early as the early 2020s according to estimates from various companies and industries attentive in these flows. The data is observed, stored and released dynamically, which requires that science be online. Thus, to be able to make accurate models and update themselves in dynamic competitive environments, it is increasingly necessary to develop methodologies to generate current and adaptive forecasts for decision making. On the other hand, the cost reduction of electronic sensors applied in environmental monitoring allowed data to be collected and used to build models in real time Rolph et al. [5]; Pereira et al. [6]; Sanchez-Rosario et al. [7].
These models use a continuous flow of data and there is no control over the order of arrival of each element to be processed. Flow data has unlimited size, once processed, an element is usually discarded. It is not recovered unless it is stored in memory, which is usually small for the size of the data received. Queries about these flows need to be processed in real time (for a real world event or because it is expensive to store the data). These methodologies should be able to extract knowledge in huge amounts of structured and unstructured data from in situ monitoring, regulations and web, and add it to existing knowledge. In the models generation, one can rely on statistical methods, machine learning and computational methods inspired in nature as presented by Fairbairn et al. [8] in a civil engineering application. These models have great robustness because they are noise tolerant and can be coupled to other models providing hybrid solutions.
Scientific and Data Intensive Computing
It should be reappraised the use of high performance computers and database technology which has caused significant changes in the development of design techniques and programming of algorithms for engineering problem solving. In the case of scientific computation of large systems, the different ways in which numerical methods are designed or adapted stimulated research in technical and applied aspects. New, scalable computing architectures (Big Data, NOSql databases) have boosted database technology, allowing simulation of real problems with great consistency and accuracy. Big Data refers to data that is too big to fit on a single server, too unstructured to fit into a row-and-column database, or too continuously flowing to fit into a static data warehouse.
The adopted methodology implies the integrated use of several technologies and can be briefly described by the following activities:
a. Acquisition of the database containing the relevant parameters. For models development and subsequent simulation, the availability of reliable data is indispensable.
b. Expert selection and data analysis and data selection for model construction, test and validation;
c. Selection of the data knowledge representation technique and acquisition of specialized knowledge, if necessary;
d. Construction, Testing and validation of the model;
e. Generalization for different configurations;
f. Analysis of results and conclusions.
The main characteristics of traditional Scientific Computing model and Intensive and Distributed Data Computation model are resumed in Table I.
Both represent computing strategies, but the best and most efficient one depends on the situation. Large-scale data processing in the distributed system is very challenging in many concepts of the system performance for reliability. Typically, the MPI (Message Passing Interface) supports a more flexible communication method than MapReduce (asynchronous versus synchronous). While MPI Gropp et al. [9] moves the data during communication, MapReduce Lammel [10] uses the concept of "data locality", making the transmission between CPU and disk possible once, this task, cannot be performed in MPI because it requires that data "be processed" should fit in memory (Core Processing).
Research Challenges and Development
The use of large volumes of data will become a fundamental competition and growth for individual companies. From the point of view of competitiveness and value-capture potential, all companies need to fit large volumes of data. In most industries, competitors and new entrants will use strategies to innovate, compete and capture value, based on information of depth and in real time. Parallel processing, clustering, virtualization, large environments, high connectivity and cloud computing, as well as other of flexible resources, are enabling organizations to take advantage of the Big Data and big data analytics.
The opportunities of the future will be greater and more difficult to be solved, to the point of challenging our capacity for imagination. Quantum computers will introduce a new era in computing. Quantum systems will help us to find new ways to model financial data and isolate key global risk factors to make better investments. And they may make facets of artificial intelligence such as machine learning much more powerful. The response and decision making will be very demanding with our ability to respond.
